Caldwell Hosts District I Seminar

The fall sessions of the SPJST Sales Representative Continuing Education seminars were held recently at Lodge 186, Caldwell.

SFM Gene McBride conducted the seminar assisted by District I Director Andrew Vavra. SFR Jim Wiest and Vice President Bernard M. Gebala, representing the SPJST Supreme Lodge, also participated in the course designed to promote advanced insight into the modern types of insurance and how they address SPJST members'

needs more fully.

Continuing Education for fraternal organizations such as SPJST is not required by the Texas State Board of Insurance, but to better serve the membership, the SPJST does require its agents to take 6 hours of classroom education per year to remain in active status.

Do you enjoy complaints? Do you admire a whiner? Do you enjoy listening to complaints? Do you feel as sympathetic toward the person who unburdens his troubles on others as you do toward the person who "can take it?" It's a million to one you don't. Do you know anyone who does?

Then why do so many people continue to pour their complaints into the ears of anyone who will listen?

The answer to that question explains many another human frailty. We can see defects in the behavior of others much better than we can see them in ourselves. When the other fellow complains, we know that he gains nothing by it, and often loses our respect. We know that sympathy cannot be forced from us without being converted into pity or contempt.

But when we ourselves complain, we are too preoccupied with our own emotions to detect disinterest, boredom or distate in our listeners.

So it is vital for us to remember that just as enthusiasm attracts others, complaining repels them.

To complain to others about our friend is to advertise the shallowness of our friendship. To complain to others about our enemy is to admit our own weakness. To complain to others about our employer is to invite contempt for critcizing another in his absence, and for continuing an employment with which we profess to be dissatisfied.

If we can be patient and understanding when others complain, we have little to lose and their gratitude to gain. But when we ourselves feel tempted to complain --that's the time to turn away from our feelings and towards our work. The time and energy we would otherwise waste in futile words can then be profitably invested in improving our own personalities and skills, while at the same time preserving the respect paid to people who "can take it!"

Insurance you don't need. Most car renters, aware that credit cards and their own auto - insurance companies usually have them covered, now steer clear of collision - damage waivers at the rental - car counter. But personal accident, personal - property and supplemental - liability coverages are three other options that can add up to $11 a day to the cost of renting a car, even though most people already are protected through their auto and homeowner's policies. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners wants states to rquire that renters be fully informed of their options and coverages. Until then, renters should check their policies or consult their insurance agents to see if they really need the supplemental protection.

Personal - accident insurance covers death or injury to the driver and, in some cases, the passengers. Personal effects coverage insures items in the car against theft or damage.

Supplemental - liability insurance covers lawsuits filed by passengers or other drivers, but that's in addition to the protection your own auto policy provides, as well as the standard $20,000 - to - $60,000 liability coverage included in the rental fee. ***

The kidder claims he is only exercising his sense of humor and can't understand why other people don't appreciate it. Sometimes he really fools himself into believing that.

As you may know, the long - term program now underway is aimed at restoring the Texas to her appearance in 1945, when she was supporting American landings at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Although the ship has completed the drydock phase of her repairs, much work remains to be done on her decks, superstructure and interior compartments.

I can assure you that the generous donation which the SPJST has seen fit to donate will be put to excellent use in preserving this grand old ship for future generations of Texans and other Americans.

The November meeting of Lodge No. 35 was called to order on November 12, 1989 at 3 p.m. by President Henry Breitkreutz.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Jason Pipes and Jana Breitkreutz.

Minutes were read and approved as read by Sister Donna Adler.

There was a moment of silence for deceased member William J. (Bill) Hejl.

Our visitors this month were Hubby Frazier and Adolph Pavelka.

The youth club announced that their candy sale was a huge success. On December 2nd, there will be District III Youth Christmas Party at Lodge 84 in Dallas with a trip to Holiday in - the - Park at Six Flags afterwards.

Our November birthdays were Christopher Pavelka, Edna Tepe, Helen Dulock, Florence Frazier and Louise Burney.

Youth door prize was won by Evan Pavelka and adult prize was won by Verlene Kelley.

It is time once again for the most important meeting of the year for our lodge. The meeting and social for December will be held December 17, 1989, at the Firemen's Hall in Sweet Home, beginning at 1:30 p.m.

Following the meeting, our Christmas social will be held. If you wish to exchange gifts, the price limit is $2.00 to $2.25 again, with there being a ladies', men's and children's divisions. Donation To The S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II SPJST Lodge No. 88, Houston recently made a donation to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II, in

Needville, for $2,053.00.

The donation was presented to Administrator Harvey Marx to purchase a patient weighing scale and other required equipment for the residents of the rest home.

Our November monthly meeting on November 29th had a good turnout of approximately sixty members present, a covered dish dinner preceded the meeting.

At 7:30 p.m., President Alvin Sefcik called the meeting to order and began with a welcome in Czech. All officers and trustees were present, except Financial Secretary Louise Willis. The usual order of business and reports were accepted by the membership.

Chairperson Helen Wallace reported that all 900 tickets for the New Year's Eve dance have been sold and there is no room for another ticket. The great band, The Texas Brew will be playing and again on December 9th, which will also nearly be a sellout by the reservation list. The Entertainment Committee, namely, Helen Wallace, Irving Theiss, Margie Hrabina and Bobbye Johnson are doing a fantastic job and have booked some of the best bands in Harris County for 1990.

Please be advised of the following events: Lodge Christmas Dinner - Party will be held December 16th starting at 6:30 p.m. This requires a covered dish from everyone attending. Guests are welcome; music that night will be by the Original Road Boys.

December meeting will be Wednesday, December 27th. The election of officers for 1990 will be held during our December 27th meeting.

The Nominating Committee consists of Henri Krenek, Raymond Skrabanek and Vicki Dressler.

President Alvin Sefcik was presented a plaque as the "Lodge Fraternalist of 1989" and we all know he will be considered seriously as a state fraternalist. Brother Sefcik has guided our lodge for the past two years and we have accomplished much success due to his leadership.

The work party on December 4th was very busy installing new cabinets in our office and many thanks to Bobbye Johnson for securing office furniture for the office and lobby.

Work parties are each first Monday of the month, also are very successful as much work and improvements are being done by retirees and senior citizens of the lodge.

The San Jacinto Czech Club held their Christmas Party at our lodge meeting room on Sunday, December 3rd and had a very good attendance with Victor and Lillia Mae Peter doing

a beautiful job of decorating the room.

William Souchek did a great job as principal speaker and kept the party going with his humor. Also present and a guest was Bishop John Morkovsky.

Lodge 172 wishes all SPJST members a very Merry Christmas and a most Happy New Year.

Sponsors Choral Group At Little Theatre DAR

On Sunday, November 19 at 2:30 p.m., the Lodge 88 Choral Group performed at the Little Theatre of Brazosport. They were sponsored by the Asa Underwood Chapter of . the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).

It was sponsored as one of our heritage programs says Lou Ripple.

We encourage keeping your heritage alive.

The Czech singers, many of whom are retired, appeared in native costume at their performance.

This Lodge 88 Choral Group, under the direction of Tim Kostom, was organized in 1952 and are in demand at many functions in Houston as well as throughout the state. They participate annually at. the Texas State Fair in Dallas, also have been a mainstay at the annual Rosenberg Czechfest since its inception 10 years. ago.

Other feather in the collection caps of the SPJST Lodge 88 Choral Group include a performance at the World's Fair in New Orleans and an invitation to the Corpus Christi Czech Heritage Festival. The group also performs annually at the Needville Rest Home sponsored by the SPJST. One of the songs that the group is known for is the "Unveiling Song," a charming Czech ditty extolling the joys of marriage.

The audience met members of this troupe when refreshments were served after the performance.

Czech Language Course At Alief

21st

AISD (Alief Independent School District) in Southwest Houston is offering through its Alief Community Evening School the 21st Czech language course starting on Thursday, January 18, 1990.

Alief Community Evening School, established for quite a few years in the Hastings High School, is located between Bellaire Blvd. in the South and Alief - Clodine in the North, just South of Cook Road and High Star Drive intersection in the Southwest Houston.

Street Is No Place For A Kid - Covenant House The

The Reverand Bruce Ritter, founder of Covenant House, which lends shelter and aid to homeless children, has been saying for years "The Street Is No Place For A Kid." The Covenant House is a crisis center for runaways and homeless kids and over the years' programs and services have developed in response to the specific needs of these youngsters such as: (a) 24 - hour emergency shelter on a "no - questions asked basis." (b) Health Services -- licensed, professional health staff offers primary and preventive medical care and diagnosis and treat problems like pregancy, substance abuse, rape, upper respiratory infections and child abuse. (c) Counseling Services -- work on short and long - term solutions to the child's problems. Staff provides individual and family counseling. (d) Educational and . Vocational Counseling -- a program to teach youngsters over 17 years to become more marketable in the job area.

Works with businesses and corporations in helping to find jobs. (e) Motherhood Counseling -- this addresses the the needs of young mothers and their babies. These young girls are, taught practical skills and knowledge on how to raise their children and how to rebuild their own lives.

Child care at Covenant House is much more than bed and board.

The staff members are counselors, social workers, doctors, nurses,

workers, maintenance teachers, guards, security help, kitchen administrative support and volunteers These youngsters who are so severely abused at home have no other place to turn to for help other than to the streets and many times are lured into prostitution by those unscrupulous degenerates who prey upon these innocent young children.

The Covenent House has helped many youngsters over the years in overcoming their difficult lives and will continue to do so, but without your help, the task is becoming more difficult.

I See It

By: W.J. "Bill" Malina We live in exciting times. Although these five words have become a modern 'cliche,' they certainly describe the day and age in which we live. Through the means of modern electronic communication we can be transported mentally to the farthest reaches of the world. By means of television we can be whisked away to exotic places and see the beauty of our planet in vivid color. We can be taken to slums and ghettos and see the unfortunate condition of the people living in them. Just minutes after they happen, we can almost feel the effects of tragic disasters, hurricanes, tornadoes and earthquakes. We know, almost instantly, anything that happens anywhere in the world. We can, so to speak, see the world changing right in front of our noses.

During the past several weeks' newspapers, radio and TV have been full of the events happening in Central Europe, i.e. Poland, Hungary, East Germany and Czechoslovakia. There are those who could care less about what is going on in these countries, much less other parts of the world -China, Africa, and Central and South America. Nevertheless, the things that happen in these far away places do affect each and everyone of us, some more than others.

What do the recent events in Czechoslovakia mean to us? How do they affect us? Each one of us must answer these questions for ourselves.

Those of us who are of Czech ancestry are aware that they have a special meaning to us. Even though we may be third or fourth generation, they give those of us who take pride in our Czech ancestry a certain sense of empathy for the people in Czechoslovakia. In some mysterious way we feel that we, too, in some way, have been liberated. It is as if some mystic, magical bond or kinship exists between them and ourselves. There are many members of our SPJST who are of German ancestry. I'm sure that many of them feel the same way about Germany, both West and East.

To many of us, Czechoslovakia is a kind of mythical fairyland wrapped up in the historic splendor of 18th and 19th century Bohemia, Moravia and Slovakia. We tend to picture it much as it was when our grand-and/or great - grandparents left it and came to the United States. Because of the events that have recently taken place in Central Europe, revealed to us by the medium of television, radio and newspapers, we can see the real Czechoslovakia of today -- a country in need of almost everything, especially understanding and individual freedom.

Do not believe, not even for a moment, that from now on everything is going to be "peaches and cream" for the people in Central Europe. As the old saying goes, "They still have a long row to hoe." Before they can enjoy their newly - gained freedom and changing life - styles, there will be a lot of hard work, planning and re organizing. Yes, even a lot of disappointment and heartache.

Our freedom did not come immediately or cheaply. We had to amend our constitution several times to insure the freedom we won in the Revolutionary War. We still have, to struggle and work hard to maintain and improve our liberty and life - style.

Americans have paid, and continue to pay, dearly for the privileges of

freedom. Many have laid down their very lives defending them. No one gave them to us, we earned them. How precious they are!

The people of Central Europe will also have to earn their freedom, nurture it and make it grow, grow in such a way as is best for them.

Monday afternoon, November 13, the Hope Lutheran Church women and Rev. Jensen from Beasley came to have services and brought cookies and had a social afterwards.

Tuesday afternoon, November 14, Elton Tielke came to play the accordian and sang old time songs with the residents.

Wednesday morning, November 15, Patty and Peggy came to sing to the residents.

Thursday afternoon, Garland Hurtye and Mary Ann Goffinet with the Fort Bend Humane Society came and brought dogs for therapy for the residents.

Everyone reported a nice Thanksgiving and stated they had a lot to be thankful for.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 47, Seaton Star, on behalf of our members, express our sincere

sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed sister AGNES P. DEPALMA, who died Thursday, October 19, 1989 in a Temple hospital at the age of 77.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 21 at Hillcrest Cemetery with Monsignor Arthur Michalka officiating. A rosary was recited Friday, October 20 at 6:30 p.m. at Sheffield Funeral Home.

Mrs. DePalma was born October 9, 1912, in Doubleheader community near Temple, the daughter of John and Annie Bartek Pavlica.

Mrs. DePalma and her husband, Jack, who preceded her in death in 1963, owned and managed the Rogers Inn in Rogers as well as several other restaurants in and round Temple.

She was also preceded in death by her parents.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Temple.

Survivors include three sisters, Angeline Kristinek of Lubbock, Emily Stuteville of Rogers and Ruby L. Bolton of Temple and a brother, Johnny Pavlica of Victoria.

May our departed sister rest in eternal peace.

Lodge 29 Taylor Youth Meeting The December 2, 1989 meeting of Lodge No. 29 Youth Club was called to order at 3 p.m. by President Darrell Malicoat.

Tammy Machu led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and members remained standing for the SPJST Motto.

The register was read; there were 21 members and 14 adults present.

Guests introduced were Patsy and Melanie Koslovsky of Seaton Lodge No. 47.

Wedding Anniversary Celebration Mr. and Mrs. Harley Cox celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary at the Chandelier Ballroom in Houston. Sixtieth Wedding Anniversary Sunday, November 19, 1989, Frank and Philomena Miller celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a Mass and the renewal of their marriage vows. Family, relatives and friends witnessed the event which took place at

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Miller Frances Pavlicek of Ennis, Texas, were first married November 17, 1929. They began their married life in Fort Worth, where Frank was employed by the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. It was here their first son, Frank, Jr. was born. In 1932 this little family moved to Waco, Texas, and during the following years, four more children were born, namely, Margaret, Jo Ann, Gene and Frances.

During their marriage, Frank and Philomena were involved in church and school activities for 35 years as their children grew up. They helped with altar boy picnics, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and their camping programs, Catholic Youth Organization (CYO), high school band activities and football games and also church programs when the pastor needed help. Now that their children have left home, Frank and Philomena are involved in some of the activities of their grandchildren.

The year 1954 was an outstanding year for the Miller family. Frank and Philomena celebrated their silver wedding anniversary; their son, Frank, was ordained to the priesthood for the diocese of Austin; their daughters, Margaret, made her profession as a religious in the congregation of St. Mary of Namur in Fort Worth; Jo Ann graduated from high school; Gene made his First Communion, and Frances began school.

After traveling the Central Texas highways and country roads for 45 years as a salesman, the Reynolds Tobacco Company gave Frank a well deserved retirement, which provided a good pension and insurance program.

The couple moved from Waco to Abbott, where they built a small two bedroom home next to their daughter and son - in - law, Emil and Frances Pustejovsky and their children. The move brought them within sixty miles of their other children, Sister Margaret in Fort Worth, Edwin and Jo Ann Carpenter and their family in Dallas, Gene and Betty Jo Miller and their family in Carrollton; their son, Frank, is in Gatesville and pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Church.

Frank and Philomena's 60 years' celebration of marriage was a reflection of their way of life as seen from the many relatives and friends who honored them on this occasion.

The anniversary Mass was celebrated with their son, Frank, as the main celebrant, and Fathers John Molnar (Pastor of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church), Frances Lavin, and Isidore Rozycki as con - celebrants.

Their children and grandchildren served as ministers of the Mass.

At the request of their children, Frank and Philomena received a Papal Blessing from His Holiness, Pope John Paul II. A letter of congratulations was received from Bishop John McCarthy of the Diocese of Austin. Msgr. George Doskocil and Father Edward Karasek of West, attended the reception. Six Sisters from Our Lady of Victory Convent in Fort Worth were also present. Over 300 relatives and friends came for the celebration; one couple from as far away as Chicago, Illinios.

Although the 60th anniversary has just been celebrated, there is no doubt about the celebration of the 75th anniversary fifteen years from now.

Perhaps God himself will arrange the time and place, but God has blessed Frank and Philomena with a long and happy life together. The difficulties of their marriage, like any other marriage, were overcome, and with the grace of God they persevered. As the good and faithful servant of the Gospels, Frank and Philomena are already sharing in their Master's joy here in this life. May God continue to be with them and bless them during their life together in the years to come.

Straight Awards For Kurz

Fridaylander garners Golden Poet honors

By Norm Petersen Managing Editor It's amazing what a little publicity generates.

Within a week after FRIDAY learned that our own Village Poet Deborah Burrus had won back - to back Golden Poet awards, news came that another Fridaylander -- Frank Kurz -- had won five consecutive awards!

Unlike Burrus, the mother of two pre - school aged children and still a "youngster" in poetry writing, Kurz -in his 80s -- has been at it more than twice as long as Burrus has been alive.

"I became interested in poetry when I studied Virgil's Aeneid in high school," Kurz said. "It gave me the thought of doing it, but I didn't write much then."

Since then, however, Kurz has found time to become a mechanical engineer, raise a family and write reams and reams of poetry.

He and his wife Ruth raised two daughters while he built railroads and served as a consultant in such far away lands like Lebanon, Peru and Germany. He and Ruth settled in Nichols Hills in 1976.

Family relationships seem to dominate Kurz's poetry.

"I remember writing A Requiem to My Mother in 1923," he recalled. A Valentine poem he wrote to his wife earlier this year (Your Valentine in 1989) garnered his fifth consecutive Golden Poet Award.

"I look for the spiritual in what I write," Kurz explained. "A long time ago I dedicated my poetry to the Lord and I can't help but believe He has blessed my efforts."

Of the awards, he said, "I consider them an encouragement and that my poetry is accepted and considered worthy by my peers."

Kurz's first award in 1985 was for writing You Want to Walk Away From It All? The poem had been written by him to serve as a Christmas card message the year before.

He won in 1986 for My Mother's Song of May, memories of his mother who died in 1923. His 1987 award was for Are We Not One?, another Christmas card message.

Christmas inspired another type of message for his 1988 award, won for Yes, People Do Still Care. It was based on people helping others during the holiday season.

According to Eddie - Lou Cole, editor of World of Poetry magazine which bestows the awards, only 15 percent of the group's 1,100,000 poets are honored each year.

This year's World of Poetry convention was held in Washington, D.C., and attracted such international stars as Bob Hope, Tony Randall and Helen Hayes.

Czech Heritage Society Meeting The Runnels, Concho, Tom Green Counties Czech Heritage Society met Sunday, November 26, 1989 in the SPJST Hall in Rowena.

President Robert Mikeska brought the meeting to order at 2 p.m. All officers were present.

Elizabeth Walther moved that we stay with the state organization for another year. The motion passed.

Folklore

By: Kevin Hannan PART I -- THE CIMBAL IN AND TEXAS MORAVIA Texans were treated again this year to the music and dance of the Podlu2an ensemble from Bteclav, Moravia. When the group appeared for the first time in Bryan, Texas in 1986 at a symposium devoted to Czech music many people had their first opportunity to hear Moravian cimbal music. The cimbal (or "hammered dulcimer" as it is also called) traditionally has been a popular instrument in Texas polka bands, particularly in south central Texas Yet the encounter in 1986 between Moravian musicians and Texas audiences presented surprises for both parties.

The cimbal is of ancient origin. It was known among the people of the Near East in the time of the Old Testament. The cimbal was a popular instrument in Europe in the Middle Ages when it was known by the Latin terms psalterium and tympanom. By the late Middle Ages the instrument was known in Germany as a hackenbrett. It is not clear when it first came to be called the cimbal, but this name derives from the Greek "kymbalon" and Latin "cymbalum."

As with the name psalterium, cimbal has been applied to other completely different instruments during the history of music.- This makes it difficult to trace the instrument's history.

The cimbal was known throughout Europe and until recent centuries it commonly appeared among the instruments of an orchestra. By the early 18th century, the cimbal was no longer an orchestral instrument and it had become restricted almost exclusively to the folk idiom. Its popularity survived in Eastern Europe, especially in the Carpathian region and in the plains of the Hungarian portion of the Austro - Hungarian Empire.

The cimbal survives today as a folk instrument in eastern Moravia, Slovakia and Hungary, as well as in the Carpathian regions of Poland, Ruthenia and Ukraine. Traditionally the people of the mountains had been master cimbal craftsmen. The instrument was quite simple and inexpensive to manufacture, which insured its popularity in the poorer mountain regions.

The traditonal folk cimbal was played upon a table and struck with two small wooden mallets. Or sometimes it was hung by a sling over the musican's shoulders and played standing or strolling. The 19th century saw the introduction of a larger cimbal, which stood upon short legs

10/VESTNIK—Wednesday, December 13, 1989 and vaguely resembled a small piano without a keyboard. These new instruments, equipped with damper pedals, had great range and richer sound. The larger version popular today in Czechoslovakia is known as the cimbal, while the smaller, traditional type has come to be called a "cimbalek," or little cimbal. One of the outstanding manufacturers of cimbals was the Czech Josef V. Schunda, who opened the first school for cimbal in Budapest in 1876. Today many cimbals are manufactured in Hungary.

One of the best known students of cimbal music was Moravian composer Lees Janadek (1854 - 1928). As a young man Jangek traveled from village to village in eastern Moravia and neighboring Silesia collecting folk music. He searched out cimbal players from the most remote mountain villages. His orchestral work LACHIAN DANCES is based on this music. Among other composers from Eastern Europe, Igor Stravinsky composed music for the cimbal.

Jandeek noted even in his day that cimbal music seemed to be a vanishing art form. By the end of World War II, the number of cimbal players had dwindled to a handful and the itself instrument was nearly unobtainable. Since that time, however, there has been a dramatic resurgence in the popularity of the cimbal. Part of this is due to the annual folklore festival in Stra2nice, Moravia. One of the highlights of the StraInice festival, which attracts visitors from all over the world, is the great wealth of cimbal music performed there.

The cimbal has also grown in popularity in the United States, especially among musicians playing traditional Irish and Scottish music.

The larger cimbal popular today in Eastern Europe is nearly unknown in America, however, Americans sometimes refer to the larger instrument as a "cimbalom" to distinguish it from the smaller version.

The cimbal is not unknown in Texas. The instrument has been an integral part of numerous orchestras, particularly in south central Texas.

Especially well - known are the Ray Baca Band and the Ray K•enek Orchestra. The "Baca sound" dates back to the first Baca band organized in Fayetteville in 1892. At the Czech music symposium in Bryan in 1986, one of the highlights of the event was a performance on cimbal by Edmond Dybala of Ganado. Mr. Uybah performed on an instrument which he made himself (as was common among Texas cimbal plave ) and which he had performed in various orchestras in the Ganado area.

PART II -- MORAVIAN MUSIC For those who heard the Podluian group for the first time, it was obvious that this music sounded quite different from the traditonal Czech music of Texas. The Podluian sound is indeed different from the light - hearted polkas and waltzes which many people have come to consider traditional Czech music. Some people dared to deny that the music was Moravian and insisted that it was related to gypsy music. The Podluian program was traditional Moravian music, however, and some in their audience were forced finally to question the authenticity of what they had always considered the traditional music of their ancestors.

Therein lies an interesting story: How Czech - Moravians in Texas lost their authentic folk music and adopted Czech polkas and waltzes.

In Bohemia folk instruments consisted of bagpipe, fiddle, clarinet and bugle. The bagpipe and the fiddle, like the cimbal, were traditional instruments which could be manufactured at home. Yet the music of Bohemia came to be dominated by influences other than the folk tradition. As one of the richest provinces of the Austro - Hungarian Empire, Bohemia was subjected to a heavy - handed German influence. The Czechs, with their famous musical talents, became the most talented of the empire's musicians. Czechs formed a heavy concentration in the empire's military bands. Brass military bands heavily influenced popular music. As brass instruments became more commonplace, popular music as well as traditional songs were adapted for the brass orchestra.

Music was and still is an indispensible part of Czech life, necessary for weddings, burials, celebrations and ordinary Sunday afternoons. This presented an endless demand for music and for musicians.

It was little wonder that nearly every Czech could play some sort of musical instrument. The decline in popularity of traditional folk instruments was influenced by the growing popularity not only of brass instruments but also of the accordian. The accordian as an instrument was extremely practical. Its sound carried very well. One musician could do on an accordian what previously had been required of two or three on traditional instruments. The Czechs then largely abandoned their traditional folk instrumentation for the accordian and brass instruments.

Accordians and brass instruments were less common in the mountainous areas, however. These were instruments which had to be purchased from a store. The mountain folk probably resisted these new instruments for other reasons as well, if we consider their reputation for being conservative and slow to adopt any type of novelty and innovation.

Even in Bohemia it was in mountainous areas where folklore survived. Although much of Czech folklore was lost by the 19th century, due to the effects of industrialization and Germanization, in the mountains of southern Bohemia colorful folklore survived.

Much of the Czech folk music was lost, however. When compared with Slovak and Moravian songs, we see that many Czech songs are of more recent origin. Many of the Czech songs which are today considered "traditional" actually date from the 19th century. Through the process of industrialization and Germanization many of the older songs had vanished.

The region was blessed, however, with talented composers and musicians who created new songs written in the national tradition. Many of these popular Czech songs dating from the 19th and early 20th centuries were popular become to destined throughout the world.

There has traditionally been little difference in Czechoslovakia between folk and popular music. Folk songs were extremely popular and were sung at all variety of activities. As new songs were written, performed and became popular, the most popular of these became a part of the folk repertoire. Examples of this are Czech polkas, marches and waltzes which were written in the 19th and early 20th

Wednesday, December 13, 1989—VESTNIK/11 centuries in the tradition of older folk songs. These remain popular today as favorite "traditional" Czech songs.

Folk music evolved differently in Bohemia, Moravia and in Slovakia.

While many of the Slovak and Moravian songs are older, they are generally less well - known. Songs from Slovakia and eastern Moravia, especially those in minor keys, sound quite different from Czech songs. The Slovak and eastern Moravian music, with its instrumentation of dulcimer and strings and its unique dances, is distinct from the accordian and brass polka and waltz music which the Czechs are known for.

PART III -- FOLKLORE Folklore is something that constantly evolves. And not only folklore itself, but also our attitudes toward folklore change. What we consider folklore may not have been folklore for our grandparents. In Czechoslovakia it is only since the end of World War II that there has been such widespread interest in folklore.

Some of this interest no doubt is due to a popular disillusionment with material progress as we know it today.

For some, folklore seems to represent a more peaceful and romantic way of life.

Our ancestors certainly had a different attitude about this than we do. Czech and Moravian immigrants came to Texas from the poorest mountainous regions of their native land. The first Czech settlers in Texas were natives of the mountains of northeastern Bohemia. They were followed by a massive immigration from the ethnographic regions of Valagsko and Lasko in northeastern Moravia. Valasko and Lasko happen to be among Czechoslovakia's richest ethnographic areas, but in the 19th century they were also among the poorest. There was a massive out migration from these regions as individuals and families moved on in search of a better life.

It was in these regions that had been by - passed by industrialization and development that folklore was most likely to survive. The actual process of preserving folklore was carried on by those who day - by - day lived the traditional way of life. All of the colorful trappings which we associate with folklore, from folk costume to folk custom, were rooted in some practical purpose. Folklore was a way of life which had evolved without great change over the centuries as a means of dealing with nature, the environment, family and community. Most folk customs had originated years ago out of some quite practical social need.

Folklore above all had a practical character.

We can expect that early Czech Moravian immigrants in Texas knew a great deal about folklore. We know that not all of their native folklore survived in Texas, however. It is not too surprising that the folk costume from the Beskyd Mountains in Moravia did not survive in Texas.

Neither the climate nor the way of life in Texas suited such dress. Only the more practical aspects of folk culture survived the immigration process.

These immigrants showed tremendous pride in their national heritage. Many also exhibited a regional pride. This perhaps could be expected when we consider that the overwhelming majority of Czech Moravian immigrants in Texas emigrated from such a small, compact geograhical area. The Czech Moravians of Texas were sometimes

criticized by Czechs in northern states for what they termed a hard - headed Moravian separatism.

An example of fierce regional pride is seen in the case of Judge Augustin Haidukk (1845 - 1929), foremost figure in Czech - Moravian public life in Texas in that day. Judge Haidu§ek was an attorney, a county judge and a member of the state legislature. As editor of the La Grange newspaper Svoboda, Haidu§ek occasionally used his native Lachian dialect in his newspaper. Lachian dialect differs from the Czech language, as well as from other Moravian dialects, and in that day no attempts had ever been made to write or publish in the language. Since Haidu gek's native region was one of Moravia's poorest and least developed, he must have had a strong sense of pride in the region to publicly identify himself with it. In many famous cases other successful people of humble origin have hidden their origins by adopting another language or a more sophisticated dialect of their own language.

Many immigrants would have distinguished between folk culture and what they might have termed high culture. Many people have always thought that true culture is preserved only in books and in universities while folk culture is something completely different. We think of a crude folk wisdom which is different from the wisdom of the philosophers.

Early immigrants made this distinction also. Many immigrants from poor mountainous regions probably associated their native folk culture with the poverty and lack of development found there. In comparison with other regions their native folk culture may have seemed quite primitive to them. Immigrants were more likely to value their nation's higher learning and culture. Some probably gave little thought to what value their folk culture had. At any rate, as these immigrants arrived in Texas they retained from their folklore only those elements which could practically be utilized and preserved.

PART IV -- CIMBAL MUSIC IN TEXAS The cimbal in Texas has an interesting history which is still in need of documentation. The cimbal was probably brought here by early immigrants from the area surrounding the town of Fren gtat, Moravia. Cimbal music, performed by cimbal, string instruments and woodwinds, is the traditional folk music of the Frengtat area. It is likely that these early immigrants in Texas played and sang the music of their native region.

Dances were one of the essential social activities among Czech Moravian immigrants in Texas. In the early years after immigration music was provided by impromptu groups of musicians performing at house dances.

As communities and churches erected halls where dances could be held, musical entertainment grew more sophisticated. Countless orchestras sprang up.

It is not known that any immigrant transported a cimbal across the ocean to Texas. This was probably considered a highly impractical idea, since the instrument was not expensive and could be manufactured even in America. Nothing is known about the first attempts to make cimbals in Texas. It is likely that a musician manufactured the first instrument for himself. He may have sought the advise of a more experienced craftsmen. Generally, the mountain

folk were extremely skillful with wood and the cimbal did not present a great problem. The cimbal was very much a personal means of musical expression -- from first making the instrument, to learning how to play it, to working the instrument into the musical context of an orchestra.

The earliest Czech - Moravians in Texas settled in Fayette, Austin and surrounding counties. It is interesting to note that the cimbal was not found anywhere north of this area. Other Czech - Moravian communities in Texas, such as in Ellis County, boast a lively Czech musical tradition, but the cimbal was not found there.

A tight bond existed among the early families that settled in Fayette and surrounding counties. Many had been neighbors in Moravia. Even though some relatives and neighbors later moved outside this first original area of settlement, these first communities in south central Texas retained a strong Moravian character. Some of the traditions established there were quite old and were authentically Moravian. An example of this was the elaborate Corpus Christi feast day and celebration in Fayetteville, patterned after that of Frydek , Silesia and northern Moravian towns. Yet some traditions found in Texas' first Czech Moravian communities did not survive in the settlements which were established later in other areas.

Perhaps the cimbal was already something of an anachronism in Moravia in the mid - 19th century, as is actually suggested by Leo g Jankek's research. Had the immigration to Texas taken place a generation later it is possible that no one would have introduced the instrument here. At any rate, the cimbal is unique to Texas in that other groups of Czechs and Moravians in America do not share this tradition.

Early orchestras in south central Texas adopted the cimbal and worked the instrument into their lineup. The cimbal was often used as a solo instrument with featured solos performed by the cimbalist. Yet brass instruments came to predominate in these orchestras and the cimbal was used in a context somewhat different from that found in traditional folk ensembles. As brass instruments played Czech polka and waltz tunes, the cimbal was expected to play along also. This situation was influenced by sheet music which was available to musicians. _ A type of "hit parade" existed already in the 19th century. Newspaper readers were able to order sheet music . and later 78 RPM discs for the newest and most popular tunes. Popular pieces written by Czech composers -polkas, marches and waltzes -- were made available in this manner. Many of the Czech pieces became popular throughout Europe. Czech Moravians in Texas obtained sheet music and later recordings either from Europe or from mail order houses in northern states. Later Texas merchants sold these. There was a certain novelty to obtaining the hottest new music from Europe.

Visitors from Czechoslovakia are often surprised by the great number of Czech songs which have been preserved in Texas. Some native Czechs are unfamiliar with the songs.

Many of these songs had been popularized in Texas through sheet music and recordings. In some cases the popularity of a song was relatively short - lived in Europe and the tune fell into oblivion, although polka bands still perform it in Texas today.

Czech - Moravians in Texas

preserved this music, even though this was not necessarily the authentic folk music of their native region. They stayed abreast of happenings in Czech music, even as they may have lost contact with their family in the old country. They avidly purchased -sheet music and recordings. They bound the lyrics to the songs into books and sang them whenever possible.

Many of the Czech songs preserved today in Texas were popularized in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Some were newly - written compositions, even though written in the style of traditional songs, and the novelty of the new melody accounted for their popularity. Other popular songs dating from this period were actually traditional folk songs. In the case of both traditional songs and newer compositions popularized in that day, sheet music and recordings helped spread their popularity.

In the case of Moravian cimbal music, neither words or music were easily obtainable. In the past century it was chiefly scholars who were interested in this music. Compared with Czech songs, the traditional Moravian music was considered more primitive. Czech songs, along with the polka and waltz, were considerably more fashionable and cosmopolitan.

Some of the traditional Moravian songs survive in Texas, but these are songs with a polka and waltz tempo from western Moravia. Despite the presence of the cimbal and string instruments, the authentic music of eastern Moravia did not survive in Texas.

PART V -- CIMBAL MUSIC IN MORAVIA In recent years in Czechoslovakia there has been a resurgence of interest in cimbal music. A variety of recordings is available in record shops and several restaurants in Prague feature small cimbal ensembles. The number of cimbal players has also increased dramatically. In the town of Uherske Hradi gte, with a population of 14,000, there are 15 local cimbal orchestras.

Learning to play the cimbal traditionally was a slow and difficult endeavor, since any type of instruction was difficult to obtain. Milan lives in the village of Tvrdonice near Bi.eclav in the region of Moravian - Slovicko. As Texas audiences learned, Milan is a talented musician skilled on several instruments. His favorite type of music is folk. He expresses particular admiration for some of the Slovak and Hungarian cimbal players. He and other members of Podluzan stated that they seldom play Czech polka music. They prefer the traditional music featuring cimbal, strings and woodwinds. The musicians and dancers of Podluzan are all employed in fields other than music.

Folklore for them is a hobby, although they all feel passionately about it.

Milan mentioned that it is an awkward situation that there are so many truly talented musicians in his region. The number of musicians vastly exceeds the number of full - time job opportunities available in music. Milan and the other musicians of Pod'Ulan have performed with some of the most talented and best - known singers and musicians of Moravia. Podlulan loves to play the traditional music. They say it is a challenge to create their own special arrangements and harmonies for the old songs.

One of the best - known cimbal players in Czechoslovakia is Jan Rokyta (born 1938 in Jasenna u Vizovic). Tracing

Tracing a home's history can be a tedious but rewarding task. Historic restoration experts quite often find out about old houses' pasts by checking around inside and outside, also checking on title records and abstracts, boning up on building methods used long ago, and asking questions from the previous homeowners and probably neighbors.

Knowing how a mason lays up a wall can help when restoring stone or brick houses. Masons start a wall at a window jamb or corner. If your house reveals slivers of stone or brick around windows and doors, it's likely that an opening was cut after the house was built.

Although not every house has been

extensively altered, the old homes that have been changed are filled with clues that can tell an interesting story about the past. The hunt is often time consuming, but for a sleuth each project becomes a challenging one - of - a - kind adventure.

Take, for instance, a once - grand two - story house in a large city. Just one day before the wrecking crews were to demolish the structure, it was declared historically significant by the city. An expert was called in to determine whether the house was worth restoring. He began his detective work by carefully peeling off paint layers until reaching the original color and climbing around in the attic in search of clues indicating construction changes. Capitals are not used for emphasis or for news headlines in Czech. On the whole, the use of capital letters is rather restricted in Czech.

Here are other important points in spelling: Pronouns and possessive adjectives of the POLITE—EORMAL usage are capitalized, as are those of the

FAMILIAR—INFORMAL usage: Vy, y am, Va g ; Ty, Tvfij, Tobe. The latter are ALWAYS in caps; the polite form is capitalized only when referring to one person. If you are referring to a group (plural), then the pronouns are not capitalized.

A common error made by many Czechs in this area is that when they use the formal Vy, Vas, Vam, they use a PLURAL VERB, ALTHOUGH THEY ARE ADDRESSING ONLY ONE PERSON. WRONG Vy, (1 person) jste veera jeli do me'sta. Do not use a plural verb unless you are speaking to more than one person.

The pronoun ja is not capitalized: neither do we capitalize adjectives and adverbs indicating nationality. (This IS done in English). Ex.: Main Zeskou 2enu. (I have a Czech wife). Mluvirne e'esky. (We speak Czech). ~Punctuation marks are the same in Czech as in English: (See also Lesson 5.) teeka vykfienik earka (') uvozovaci stfednik (;) znamenka ("') dvojteeka (:) zavorky ( ) pomleka (---) rozdelovaci otaznik (?) znamenko (-) One big difference in English and Czech punctuation has to do with the use of commas.

Commas are used before and after a relative clause: Ztratil jsem knihu, kterou mi dal.

—before and after a noun clause: Je dobfe, ze tomu rozumig.

—before and after an adjective clause: V g echen cukr. v g echna kava.

—before and after an adverbial clause: Jakmile me uvidel, sel prye.

Finally, quotation marks are always preceded by a colon. Ex.: Otec fekl synovi: "Pracuj a ue se!" (In Czech, the first quotation marks are on the line, not inverted, and ARE inverted at the end of the quotation. Our machines here do not print the double inverted quotation marks. The trend here in the US is to use the standard English quotation marks— "").

Longtime smoker quits through smoke stoppers. After 30 years of smoking and two times through the Smoke Stoppers program, James A. Dusek of Temple has quit smoking once and for all.

For the longtime smoker, support is number one, says Mr. Dusek, who received the support he needed from his loving family and the instruction through the Scott and White Smoke Stoppers program.

A smoking cessation program prepared by the National Center for Health Promotion, Smoke Stoppers helps smokers break their addiction quickly, easily and permanently. The Scott and White Department of Health Education offers several times during the year at various locations.

The program is designed and conducted by former smokers who understand what it takes to quit.

Smoke Stoppers works by addressing the individual smoker's attitudes, behaviors and patterns of smoking.

Mr. Dusek first participated in Smoke Stoppers in 1985. He quit cigarettes for six weeks, but then began smoking again shortly afterwards.

During the next three years, Mr. Dusek noticed that he was smoking more and more and yet was getting less and less out of it. Mr. Dusek also noticed that attitudes and public policies were changing and that smoking was becoming more socially unacceptable. Also, because of the U.S. Surgeon General and the medical community's vast amount of compelling information on the harmful effects of smoking, such as the connections between smoking and heart disease, lung disease, narrowing of the arteries and oral cancer, Mr. Dusek decided that it was time to quit again.

Fiercely determined to quit, Mr. Dusek returned to Smoke Stoppers in July 1988. He says that he felt very comfortable and was not embarrassed at all about coming back to the program for a second time.

Under the instruction of Susan Edens at the Scott and White Options for Health Education Center in Temple, Mr. Dusek took his first few steps towards a smoke - free life.

Determination is 99.9 percent of the process, says Mr. Dusek, but a good, entertaining instructor is also a bit plus.

Since his last visit to Smoke Stoppers, Mr. Dusek proudly says that he has not lit up a cigarette and has no desire whatsoever to start again.

Since he has been a non - smoker, Mr. Dusek hasn't experienced any weight gain, which is a typical complaint of former smokers, his breathing has become easier and his senses of taste and smell have sharpened.

Because of the U.S. Surgeon General and the medical community's vast amount of compelling information on the harmful effects of smoking, such as heart disease, lung disease, oral cancer and narrowing of the arteries, the longtime smokers decided to quit once and for all.

The Department of Health Education at Scott and White is offering a spring series of Smoke Stoppers classes Monday, May 15 in Killeen and Tuesday, May 30 in the Bryan - College Station area. The first meeting at each location will be a free of - charge introductory session in which potential participants can learn more about the Smoke Stoppers program. After the first meeting, participants may continue with the program for a registration fee.
