STATE OF TEXAS OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR

The president of the National Fraternal Congress of America, an affiliation of 100 fraternal benefit societies with more than 10 million members, has designated June 8 through 14, 1988, as Fraternal Week.

The fraternal benefit system performs many religious, charitable, patrioticand benevolent activities through its societies and local units.

The local units of these societies and their members render great service to Texas and the nation through civic and patriotic projects.

The fraternal benefit societies have long proclaimed their patriotism and celebrate Fraternal Week through special observance of Flag Day, June 14, and are a part of the National Fraternal Flag Day Foundation.

The importance of beneficial fraternal and other organizations in Texas cannot be overstated. All Texans should unite to celebrate Flag Day with the National Fraternal Congress in recognition of the ideals and objectives of our state, nation and beneficial society.

Therefore, I, William P. Clements, Jr., Governor of Texas, do hereby designate the week of June 8-14, 1988 as:

FRATERNAL WEEK in Texas and urge appropriate recognition thereof.

In this issue is the Independent Audit Report beginning on page 3; you are encouraged to read it and give it some serious thought. It seems to reveal that our departments and officers are functioning well.

In the fall of 1984, there was a question brought up about an annual outside independent audit, however, no action was taken on it. Now, as our members could see, by Brother Leonard Mikeska's report, the fidelity bonds' cost without an audit would have increased so much that the saving with an audit practically offset the cost )f the audit. *** At some time in i 1987 Brother John Anderson of Lodge No. 191 in Lufkin called this editor to inquire it a picture of "Miss Texas" could be printed in our weekly SPJST Vestnik (Herald); he stated that the young lady, Jo Thompson, was a member of Lodge 191. The reply was that this editor would be delighted to print the picture and article.

Later, yours truly contacted Brother Anderson inquiring if there was a possibility "Miss Texas, Sister Jo Thompson could appear in the 1987 Westfest Parade - Labor Day weekend, however, her schedule would not permit her to appear in West.

After all, the "Miss America" Committee has control over the events she will participate in.

Now, due to the efforts of SL President Howard Leshikar and SYD Claudette Reese, "Miss Texas," Sister Jo Thompson will appear on our XXV Convention Program and many of her fellow members will have an opportunity to meet her. *** Do we have conventions for banquets, get togethers, entertainments, etc.? No, those are only the by - products. The real value in a convention is the exchange of ideas, take stock of our progress and make plans for the future. Periodically conventions draw many delegates together, to attend these phenomena called "Conventions."

We no longer wonder what it is that brings delegates to Conventions. We have attended enough of them to know they represent one of the best and most admirable demonstrations of this country's dynamic energy and its creative drive toward progress and growth. They illustrate, as nothing else does, the spirit of give and take, and learn and teach, that have replaced in this country the old world policies of secrecy and the law of the jungle. Let us bear this in mind at all times and let us employ the advantages and the opportunities these Conventions give us to meet and exchange ideas with those in our fraternal work who, after all, are here also to help and be helped. *** Since the May 18th issue quite a number of questions have been asked and answers will be sought and wanted at the convention. How much did the four committees cost in meetings' expense since January 1988? When last checked, the figures were about $2,000 for the Publication Committee (one meeting), under $4,000 for Insurance Committee (2 meetings), $12,000 + for the By-Law Committee (5 meetings) and nearly $15,000 for the Finance Committee (4 meetings).

If some Finance Committee member is selling promotional material to the Home Office such as ballpoint pens, etc.- and, possibly delegate packets and receiving commission for the sales and then chairs the committee which sets the salaries of the officers, does that not infringe on the Code of Ethics and does it not constitute "conflict-of interest?" Should he have disqualified himself for those reasons? Since he did not, who at the Home Office knew this existed, what was done about it and did the directors know, and if not, why and if yes, what action was taken? One member called and said we are told the Society belongs to the membership, but, half of the time, we do not know what is going on.

The base pay for the seven directors amounts to nearly $200,000 in four years; in the four years ending December, 1987, the seven directors have been paid over $500,000 in their duties.

It was questioned in the District VI meeting (minutes this issue) whether someone paid by the Society should serve on a committee. Do they draw per diem? That is what conventions are for -- ask and get the facts! That is what has been done for 24 conventions thus far!

This editor wishes to express his appreciation to the SPJST Publication Committee members and the Publishers for their sincere advice and understanding, also wishes the XXV Convention, all delegates a productive session as well as an enjoyable occasion for all attending. *** Here are partial results of an "Editor Survey" taken by the..NKA Survey Committee Chairman Barbara A. Cheaney, late in 1986 of thefraternal societies belonging to the NFCA. Only 69 percent of the editors responded and many answered only some of the questions.

Out of 39 responses, 20 percent were in the fraternal system 20 years or more.

From 54 responses, 29 percent received $33,000 plus in salary.

Out of 64 responses, 63 percent were male and 29 percent were female.

Of 64 responses, 44 percent were officers, 43 percent management and 4 percent clerical.

Sixty - seven percent of the societies send a publication to their membership.

Frequency of publication: (Response: 39) 34% Monthly 19% Bi-monthly 40% Quarterly 6% Weekly 0% Other Six percent of 39 answers means that only SPJST seemingly has a weekly publication of 16 pages.

From this report, you can see that a limited expense is spent on reaching the membership of many societies; in some cases it is a 4 to 8 page 8/2 by 11 size.

Twenty - one percent of editors answering were 46 to 55 years of age and a number of editors were 65 years and older.

Until 1980, the SPJST paid $75 a month for office space and telephone expense for the editor. Since 1980, your editor has furnished office space and telephone at no cost to the Society. ***

The Officers and Directors Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST): We have examined the balance sheet of the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST) at December 31, 1987, and the related statements of operations and surplus, and cash flow for the year-then ended. Our examination was made in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards and, accordingly, included such tests of the accounting records and such other auditing procedures as we considered necessary in the circumstances.

In our opinion, the aforementioned financial statements present fairly the financial position of the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST) at December 31, 1987, and the results of its operations and the changes in its financial position for the year then ended, in conformity with generally accepted accounting principles (Note 1), applied on a basis consistent with that of the preceding year.

The accompanying financial statements have been prepared in accordance with insurance accounting practices prescribed or permitted by the Insurance Department of the State of Texas, which practices are considered generally accepted accounting principles for fraternal benefit life societies.

Premiums and considerations are recognized as income when due. Policy acquisition costs, consisting primarily of commissions and other expenses related to acquiring new business, are charged to current operations as incurred.

(5) Related Party Transactions

Certificate reserves are based on statutory mortality and interest requirements without consideration of withdrawals. (c) Nonadmitted Assets

In accordance with the By-Laws of SPJST, mortgage loans on real estate are generally made only to qualified members and local lodges.

(6) Net Capital Gains and Losses

Certain assets designated by the Insurance Department of the State of Texas as "nonadmitted" (principally furniture and equipment) have been excluded from the balance sheet by a charge to surplus. These nonadmitted assets were approximately $237,552 at December 31, 1987. (d) Investments Investments are shown on the following basis: Bonds - at cost, adjusted for amortization of premium or discount Preferred stocks - at market, with unrealized gains (losses)) credited (charged) to surplus Common stocks - at market, with unrealized gains (losses) credited (charged) to surplus Bonds designated by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners as "not in good standing" are carried at the lower of cost or market value Net realized gains (losses) on sales of investments are credited (charged) directly to surplus, (e) Mortgage Loans on Real Estate Mortgage loans, all of which are first liens, are stated at the aggregate unpaid balance. An allowance of $41,000 has been recorded to reflect the decrease in value of the underlying real estate below the unpaid balance of mortgage loans in default. (f) Real Estate Real estate acquired in satisfaction of debt is carried at the unpaid principal balance of the mortgage loan at the date of foreclosure plus foreclosure costs, real estate taxes, and all other related costs necessary to obtain clear title to the property. An allowance of $48,300 has been recorded to reflect the decrease in market value below the cost of the property as previously explained. (g) Cash and Cash Equivalents For purposes of reporting cash flows, cash includes all cash on hand and cash on deposit with maturities of three months or less. (h) Refunds to Members The By-Laws of SPJST provide for an annual premium refund on certain certificates. The refunds may be paid to members or, at the option of the certificate holder, distributed in the form of paid-up additional insurance. For 1987, the adopted premium refund scale was 3% of the December 31, 1987 certificate reserve less $35 per premium paying certificate or $1.60 per paidup certificate. The premium refunds apply to permanent insurance plan only, excluding universal life certificates.

(2) Certificate Reserves Certificate reserves, calculated using statutory mortality and interest requirements, consisted of life insurance, annuities and miscellaneous reserves of $28,419,394, $11,194,008, and $194,751, respectively. The primary assumptions used are as follows: Interest - interest rates vary from 3.0% to 5.5% depending on the date of issue and type of policy Mortality - mortality rates are based on published industry tables. These tables include the 1941 Commissioners Standard Ordinary (CSO), 1958 CSO, 1958 Commissions Extended Insurance Table, and 1980 CSO. (3) Reinsurance SPJST and a reinsurance company (reinsurer) entered into agreements with respect to certain in force certificates issued by SPJST. The certificates ceded to the reinsurer are on a yearly renewable term basis. SPJST paid an annual premium amounting to $60,801 for 1987, based on the amount at risk on the portion of the original insurance reinsured SPJST is contingently liable for reinsurance ceded to other companies in the event such companies are unable to pay their portion of the claims. At December 31, 1987, aggregate reserves for life certificates have been reduced by reinsurance ceded of $53,864.

(4) Fmnlovee Benefit Plan S 1ST has a defined benefit plan for the benefit of employees who have completed one year of service and are at least twenty-one years old. Such plan provides for retirement benefits used upon compensation and upon length of service. All benefits are funded by contributions by the participants and SPJST. The required participant contribution is 2% of annual compensation plus 2% of annual compensation in excess of $3,000. In 1987, the Society contributed $117,655 to the plan.

Donnie Victorick

Born in Caldwell, Texas to Steve and Vlasta (Adamek) Victorick, Donnie Victorick, who represents District I on the SPJST By - Law Committee, also lived in Cooks Point, Texas until 1955. He then moved to Snook and has lived there since that time.

Mr. Victorick and his wife, Janice, are the parents of two children, Melissa Victorick (age 15, who is presently reigning SPJST State Queen) and Ashley, age 11.

Earning a Bachelor of Arts degree (in History and Government) from Texas A&M University in 1971, Donnie continued to further his education and earned a Master of Education Administration degree, also

from Texas A&M University in 1979.

Being a lifelong member of the SPJST, Donnie has exmplified "fraternalism" from an early age by serving Lodge No. 9 (among the original 25 charter SPJST Lodges) in Snook in the financial secretary's capacity for 15 years, in which he still enjoys serving. Among other fraternal lodge duties, he also is a sales representative since 1971.

During his tenure of District I presidency from 1975 to 1986, Donnie has proven to his associates that "fraternalism" and "insurance sales" work together hand - in - hand for a brighter SPJST. Prior to the XXV Convention, Donnie has attended and was elected

to serve on the SPJST By - Law Committee for three (3) consecutive conventions (12 years); he had served as secretary in 1984 and currently serves as chairman of the By - Law Committee.

Residing in Snook (Burleson County), Donnie is employed with Snook Independent School District, where he is serving as their Elementary Principal and Basketball Coach.

Living a very active life, Donnie is a member and past president of the Snook Lions Club, participates in the Snook Volunteer Fire Department, serves as an Adult 4 - H Leader in the Snook 4 - H Chapter, holds a membership in the National Elementary and Secondary School

His other interests include being a member of the Texas High School Coaches Association and also Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.

Within nine (9) consecutive years of State Basketball Playoffs, Donnie spearheaded the Snook's Basketball Team to five (5) consecutive State Championships. He has also led Snook's Track Team to three (3) Track State Championships in 1980, 1981 and 1982. Moreover, his teams made the playoffs every year. ***

Jerry B. Milan By - Law Committee Member Jerry B. Milan represents District III. He was born in Ft. Worth, Texas to the late Joe and Anna Milan (also very active SPJST and Sokol members); he has 3 brothers and 4 sisters. He married Henrietta Ban fi (a professional artist) of Chicago, Illinois in 1957. They have two sons, Rome, age 29, a teacher/coach at Weatherford, Texas High School and Talon, age 25, a sales representative for Beecham Products in San Antonio.

A 1951 Ft. Worth High School graduate, Jerry received a B.S. degree in Physical Education in 1958 from Texas University (Austin) and a Master of Education degree in 1964 from North Texas State University of Denton.

For forty - two years, Jerry's membership is enrolled at Lodge 154, Ft. Worth where he served as vice president and presently serves as president. In SPJST District III, he has served in the capacities of president, vice president and By - Law Committee.

On the convention level, Jerry has attended SPJST Conventions in 1964, 1968 (except in 1972 and 1980). He served as chairman on the By - Law Committee from 1972 to 1977; in 1984 he was elected on the committee again and presently serves as vice chairman.

He is also credited for serving on the Publicity Committee.

His employment placed him for 10 years as teacher/coach at Castleberry High School and 20 years at Hurst Euless - Bedford Schools at Trinity High School teaching Physical Education, Health and coaching gymnastics. After teaching professionally 30 years, Jerry retired in May 1988.

He is known nationally as well as internationally by being a member of the numerous organizations, namely, United States Gymnastic Federation Professional; past president of Gymnastic Teachers Association of Texas; Charter member and past

president of Texas High School Gymnastic Coaches Association; 1976 Honorary Life Member of Gymnastic Association of Texas; served on the United States Olympic Committee in 1972 at Munich, Germany and in 1976 at Montreal, Canada; attended Pan American Games in 1975 and was a delegate to convention in 1977; served as chairman for men's gymnastics and trampoline for Southwestern AAU Junior Olympics; a member of United States Gymnastic Safety Association; a charter member of Texas Gymnastic Judges Association; served as chairman on the National School Board for the American Sokol Organization in Chicago, Illinois; was chairman on By - Law Committee; served as Educational and Public Relations director and past physical director of men for the American Sokol Organization (Southern District) in Dallas, served as vice president and physical director at the Sokol Fort Worth, was chairman Board of Directors at Eagle Mountain Athletic Center. He also serves on the Ft. Worth Chamber of Commerce Sports' Committee and serves as 1988 director for Ft. Worth Chamber of Commerce.

Jerry is a member of the National Education Association, Texas State National Association, Teachers Gymnastic Judges Association, National High School Gymnastic Coaches Association, National Federation Interscholastic Coaches Association, Texas Association of Health, Physical Education and Recreation.

Having experience in Sokol Ft. Worth since 1938, Jerry has been a gymnast instructor, physical director, held clinics and workshops. In the American Sokol, he was chairman of the National Instructor School Board; served on the Member Manual Revision Committee, Meet Director, clinics and workshops. From 1952 to 1956, he was a team member at University of Texas (Austin), a captain from 1954 - 1956, was Southwest Conference All Around Champion in 1956, and coached the Dallas Gym Team from 1960 to 1980.

He attended the Olympic games at Mexico City (1968), Munich (1972), Montreal (1976), Los Angeles (1984); Pam American Games at Mexico City (1975), Indianapolis (1987); in Spartakadia Prague, Czechoslovakia (1980); Sokol International Championships in Vienna, Austria (1972, 1982); Gymnastradia at Zurich, Switzerland (1982) and in Herning, Denmark (1987); National Collegiate Athletic Association Championships (many); USGF National Congress (many); National American Sokol Championships (1953, 1957, 1961, 1965, 1968, 1973, 1977, 1981, 1985).

During Jerry's professional career, he attended events (too numerous to mention) in several out - of - state places as well as in the European countries including England. Among his collegues, he was rated as a dedicated individual who was a recipient of the following awards: Gymnastic Association of Texas Honor Award at Austin and USGF Distinguished Service Award at St. Louis, both in 1987; Sokol Ft. Worth Service Award in 1986; USGF Service Award at Ft. Leona Macha

Lad J. Zatopek

A lifelong resident of El Campo, Leona Macha represents the By - Law Committee in District VI. Born April 22, 1920 in El Campo (Wharton County), Texas to John and Lillian (Knebel) Kruppa, she married Ralph Macha on June 18, 1942 and they have two daughters, Garnett Larza, a teacher in Conroe ISD and Susan Haynie, a teacher in Comfort ISD. She also has four grandchildren, David and Karen Larza, Jill and Christopher Haynie.

Leona graduated in 1937 from El Campo High School and is a graduate of Draughon's Business College.

Before Lodge 50 merged with Lodge 40, Leona was a member for six years and another six years after its merger.

She has developed interest attending meetings and held an office in Lodge 40 mainly because her grandfather, the late Frank Knebel, was a charter member of Lodge 40, which was organized 86 years ago. In addition to lodge duties, she served as treasurer, secretary, Family Day chairman and is a productive sales representative. In District VI she has served as chairman on the Nominating Committee and SPJST By - Law Committee as secretary (1984 - 88). In 1980 she was a delegate to the convention in San Antonio. At the 1984 convention, in Corpus Christi, she served on the By Law Committee and then was elected secretary; she presently fulfills this position very efficiently. Leona was elected delegate to the 1988 Convention to be held in Temple.

Her previous employment placed her with Johnson - Appling Oil Operators for 12 years as office manager. Meanwhile, she continued working 4 more years for W.D. Appling Oil Operators as office manager. Then she became employed at First National Bank of El Campo serving as secretary to the bank's president and assistant vice president for 22 years prior to her retirement on April 30, 1986.

Leona continues her interests having membership in the following clubs and/or organizations, namely, El Campo Garden Club, The Women's Club, Hospital Ladies' Auxiliary, Strugglers Dance Club, Catholic Daughters -- serving as Lector and Communion Minister at St. Philip's Catholic Church of El Campo and is precinct chairman in Precinct No. 16 in El Campo (Wharton County), Texas.

By - Law Committee Member Lad J. Zatopek, who represents District II, was born to Frank and Mary (Janovsky) Zatopek in Bell County, Texas where he grew up to finish high school.

A member of Lodge 87 for approximately 48 years, Lad was elected president, served on Board of Trustees, Audit Committee, Land and Building Committee and is a productive sales representative. On the district level, he served on Audit Committee and was an outstanding District II Sales Representative during the existence of field representatives under the late Brother Joe B. Hejny's supervision.

Lad has attended conventions in Waco, Dallas, Houston, Waco, San Antonio and Corpus Christi where he was elected to serve on By - Law Committee of District II on which he currently is serving.

Prior to Lad's retirement, he was with A employed Texas (Blackland Experiment Station Research Center) in Temple.

Lad is a member of SPJST, RVOS, Knights of Columbus (3rd and 4th Degree), St. Luke's Catholic Church usher, Farm and Ranch, Bell County Pecan Growers, Sportsman Club and City Committee.

Ernest Kristinek, Jr. Representing District IV By - Law Committee member is Ernest Kristinek, Jr., son of Ernest, Sr. and Angeline (Pavlica) Kristinek of Lubbock, Texas. He has one brother, Jerome Kristinek.

Ernest, Jr. and Fredda "French" Kristinek have two sons, one daughter and three grandchildren. (His mother is SPJST Publicaton Committee chairman.)

Ernest graduated from high school and attended Texas Tech for two years.

On the local lodge level, Ernest, Jr. is a member of Lodge No. 157 for 42 years and he has served in the

A cotton farmer for 28 years, Ernest, Jr. also raises milo and wheat in Hockley County.

For 17 years he served on the School Board; a 24 - year member of County Farm Bureau, he was president for 10 years; within his 32 - year membership of Lions Club, he served as president for 8 years. Ernest, Jr. is also a member of Hairman Hockley Counties ARB Board. ***

Tillie Helmcamp District V By - Law Committee member is represented by Tillie Helmcamp of Houston, who was born May 27, 1915 at Weimar, Texas to Otilia (Valenta) and Frank Krejci of Weimar. Tillie married Oscar Helmcamp on August 8, 1938 and he died on October 23, 1976. She has one daughter, Jeanette Eubank and one grandson, Brooks Krejci Eubank.

A valedictorian of the 1933 Weimar High School class, Tillie attended two years at University of Texas and then attended a comptometer school in Houston.

She is a 29 - year member of Lodge 88 where she served in the following capacities: president, 1st vice president, 2nd vice president, secretary, youth leader; she also served on the Resolutions and Entertainment committees and parliamentarian. She is serving her sixth year as District V president, has served as district secretary seven years and as district youth counselor four years.

Dominic F. Netek Representing District VII is member Dominic Netek, son of Leo and Mary NeteJc, who was born and raised on a farm in Corpus Christi, Texas. He has four brothers and seven sisters. (His father, Leo Netek, left Svebhov, Czechosloakia in 1903 and returned for a visit in 1972 at the age of 84.)

A high school graduate, Dominic has acquired 18 months of service schools in the U.S. Army on college level.

A 15 - year SPJST member of Lodge 133 in San Antonio, Dominic has served 13 years as lodge secretary and reporter, served on various committees, was elected at the 1984 Convention to represent District VII on the SPJST By - Law Committee and served on the Election Committee.

In addition to his commitments, he was Convention Committee co chairman, delegate and served on the Planning Committee in 1980, also served as delegte in 1984. Presently, he is representing his district on the same committee.

A retiree of the Veteran's Administration, Dominic worked in the Loan Guaranty Department, which included processing loan applications.

He was also employed at Kelly Air Force Base as a production control analyst and was supervisor of IBM key punch units.

Dominic was a director of the Southwest Concerned Citizens organization, was president of St. Margaret Mary Men's Club, a member of Czech Catholic Union of Texas, Sons of Hermann and he is an active member of the Second Infantry in the U.S. Army Division.

Since the 1968 Convention, Tillie has also attended conventions in 1972, 1976, 1980 and 1984. During the 1968 Convention, she was a convention secretary and served on the Grievance Committee in 1976. She is currently serving on the By - Law Committee.

Tillie taught school nine years in Colorado County, worked in offices in Houston about 12 years performing general office work, bookkeeping services, etc.

Besides being a member of SPJST, she is also a member of the Garden Oaks Civic Club, WFLA and RVOS. Her parents as well as her sisters and their families were SPJST members.

Tillie loves the SPJST and thinks of it as one way to carry on Czech heritage, of which she is very proud. ***

Lodge No. 4, Hallettsville Lodge No. 4 was among one of the 25 original lodges when SPJST Society was organized and chartered on July 1, 1897 which we assume is the closest beginning date since Lodge 4 records were destroyed by flood waters some time in the 1940s. This unfortunate happening didn't hinder their progress in lodge affairs, in fact, this seemed to develop a closer affiliation among the membership and to continue the best they knew how.

From that time on, its members began to take more interest on local lodge affairs and held their meetings wherever they could. They also began to take interest in district activities, especially when their own District VI held its first district meeting (after the districts were approved in the 1952 Convention) at the old Hillje Hall in Hillje. Since then Lodge 4 has always played an active part in its lodge as well as in district and state activities.

Incidently, the membership also hosted several officers' workshops.

When the State Youth Department was formulated to encourage youngsters in the Society, members

Lodge 4 has been very fortunate to have youth leaders who took interest in their leadership and continued working with the youth until they grew up and graduated from high school. From their youth club quite a few of its grown up members continued being active in local lodge affairs; for instance, Annie Marie (Zabransky) Vahalik is the second generation in the lodge serving as mother lodge president; her father, the late Frank Zabransky served president of Lodge 4 for many years. Other current lodge officers include Vice President Gaye Ann Galetka, Secretary Erwin Holy, Treasurer Helen Zabransky, Financial Secretary Hilmer Galetka, Reporter Patsy Zabransky.

The lodge holds a Family Day for its members every year in August which always seems to bring the families together for a nice reunion.

Lodge 4 also has many 50 - year members, who have received their pins, namely, Annielee Drozd, Margaret Haase, Bettie Ann Kruse, Daniel H. Kubena, Robert A. Kubena, Cecelie Maresh, Georgia Meyer, Julius J. Mikulenka, Dorothy Pavlu, Adella Pohl and Leo Strauss, Jr. Erwin Holy represents District VI on the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes Board and also serves as substitute District VI director.

The lodge has hosted a spring district meeting this year.

In 1988 Lodge 4 made a contribution of nearly $500 to various charities.

Lodge

(1984 - 87 History Activities) Lodge "Morav gti Bratii means "Lodge of Moravian Brothers," and mostly known to people as the Cottonwood Lodge which was organized July 1, 1897 by 20 charter members.

One of the first SPJST chartered lodges, Cottonwood members have come a long way to be proud of their accomplishments; some third generation families are still keeping interest in its lodge affairs, which speaks of their close - knit affiliation.

Every year in July, we hold an annual Lodge 6 Picnic and each one is bigger and better. The lodge also has an active youth club for many years who perform their talents to young and old alike, especially to the local rest home residents who look forward to the club's entertainment and refreshments. In the past year's history, Lodge 6 Youth Club achieved a good record; namely, in 1984 Shirley Dobecka was crowned District III Queen, Darrell Uptmor earned "Teenager of the Year" and achieved a $1,000 scholarship honors, Kevin Dobecka was recognized "Junior of the Year," Shirley Dobecka placed first in "Sewing"and first place was given to Lodge 6 Youth Club. In 1985 Shirley Dobecka earned a $1,000 scholarship, Lanette Hykel placed first in Handicrafts in 1986. In addition to the lodge's honor, Lanette Hykel was again crowned District /II Queen and Tammi Dobecka received "Junior of the Year."

Our 50 - year pin recipients were Louis Kazda in 1985 and in 1987, it was Betty (Danek) McKinney. Sister Katie Krizan is our oldest member.

Quite a greater part of this commemorative issue brings memories and recollections of the day of our forefathers to the reader. Many stories go back several years. To add to the old memories we will give you a sketch of facts.

With a span period of nearly 84 years, Lodge Jaromir No. 54 was accepted into the SPJST Society on 4 December 1904, when Supreme Lodge John R. Kubena from Fayetteville, Texas initiated eleven charter members in West (McLennan County), Texas.

Our last charter member, who was Franti gka Bilek,, tranferred from Lodge No. 12.

Keeping up with the modernization, Lodge 54 known as the "Lone Star Hall" in those days was the center of attraction for a span of approximately 65 years having public dances, weddings, family and/or school reunions, meetings and political rallies. In 1909, when the 5th SPJST Convention took place in West, Lodge 54 played a vital part in hosting the delegates and likewise, in 1964, when the 19th SPJST Convention was held in Waco, our lodge volunteered its facilities to serve a meal to the large crowd. Our lodge also hosted district meetings.

During about a 4 - decade span our membership experienced good and bad days with the happy and sad times when the world was troubled with four wars. Unfortunately, our lodge suffered a loss of two fine young men in their prime of life who paid the supreme sacrifice; namely, Emil R. Schiller (killed in WWI) and Rudolph Matus (killed in WWII).

Meanwhile, as the lodge struggled through some rough crises for a number of years, we were fortunate to gain membership in 1977. Our lodge was privileged to merge with former Lodge 126 of Ross and we continue having the pleasure of socializing with them after our lodge quarterly meetings. We also welcomed and accepted Sokol West Gymnastics Association members who are leasing our premises for 25 years. Since their occupancy, they have indeed made a tremendous progress toward beautifying Lodge 54 facilitites (all their work time is volunteered). We join them by wishing this physical organization good fortune in their endeavors and also who play a very active part in their weekly gym sessions and at Westfest activities. We salute them! We, as Lodge 54 members who reside in McLennan County, have a good life here. Dedicated, hardworking individuals have some common goals. The people have a great deal of pride in the life we have in this community. One of the contributing factors to our good life in West and our feeling of community pride is the Westfest. Ongoing for 12 years, the annual Labor Day weekend festival has been a completely self sustaining operation that has injected generous contributions into our City of West civic life, schools, and various organizations; it is a very popular annual event. The Westfest has developed, in many of us, a sense of strong tradition, as year after year, we take pleasure in bringing our families to the family - type of entertainment which people of Central Texans are comfortable with. We meet friends and make new acquaintances with others, plus having a real sense of well - being because there is something for everyone. Lodge 54 members contribute many long hours and hard work to this gigantic undertaking.

contributors who remain so generous and dedicated. The 4-year span reveals that our voluntary hours, which include money/food/visits, etc. includes the results below 1984 - 7,318 hrs. $3,783.00 1985 - 7,733 hrs. $6,065.85 1986 - 4,535 hrs. $5,227.25 1987 - 3,957 hrs. $4,856.50 Our lodge had some prominent members who were key indivduals and played vital roles in SPJST conventions; namely, George Kacir (who attended his first convention in 1936 and was elected on the By-Law Committee; served as convention chairman at several conventions, his last one was in 1976), Robert Cervenka served as District 111 director from 1952 - 1964. The other key members are Rudy Sefcik, editor of Vestnik, who is serving as present editor; and Vestnik Publishers -- David Kolar, Roger Galle and Richard (Rick) Bailey.

On behalf of Lodge 54,1 extend best wishes for the deliberations of the XXV Convention to be constructive and beneficial to our Society.

In conclusion I wish to close with this thought: Never look back --- you don't know who will be gaining on you. Certainly we must look forward; we must continually advance with new concepts and ideas and our eyes always fixed on new horizons. However, without the past there would be no future. So, occasionally, we must look back to check our progress, to compare our present position with that of our former days and re - evaluate our direction. As we look back to measure our today against yesterday, we can see the firm foundation, upon which the SPJST Order is based, still is sound.

Lodge No. 23, Moravia The members are proud of their Lodge No. 23 hall in Moravia. The highway sign shows up nicely when coming to Moravia. The members don't just have one sign, they have two, so, that means they take care of the roadsides coming to Moravia. This also tells friends and visitors that our SPJST Society has active members in Moravia.

The May garage sale held by their members was a great success. I enjoyed the visit and even bought a few items myself. May their next sale be more successful with all the farm vegetables coming in.

We have honored a couple each year at the Christmas Party since 1963, except for one year. The "Brother and Sister Award" in 1984 went to Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Chlapek; in 1985 to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Mares; in 1986 to Mr. and Mrs. Anton Vitek; in 1987 to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Janacek. Also in 1987 a special award for his many years of loyal and devoted service to Lodge 47 was presented to Brother Jerry Pechal who is serving as lodge president for the 12th year.

The lodge is very progressive and still a success at Saturday night dances, when the bands play polkas and waltzes plus country/western music for listening and dancing pleasure.

Lodge No. 47 Seaton Dear Members: A brief history of Lodge Hvelda Texasu (Star of Texas) from 1984 until now. The lodge was chartered March 3, 1903, therefore, we are celebrating 85 years of existence. There were 10 members who started the lodge at a blacksmith shop half a mile from the present site. Our membership stands at 2067 as of May 31, 1988.

This year our lodge had 16 recipients of 50 - year pins and they are Betty Bowles, Lessie Callan, Theresa

An Organization on the Move

No. 73, Seymour History Lodge

Lodge Sam Houston No. 73, Seymour (Baylor County) was organized December 1, 1907. It meets on the first Sunday of each month at the Senior Citizens Recreation Center in Seymour. Lodge 73 had a total of 180 members before the merger.

Over the past four years, Lodge 73 had ten 50 - year members. They are Otillia Deiterman, Edward J. Haisler, Mary R. Haisler, Emil Hrncirik, Frances Hrncirik, Eula Kocurek, Henry Petrek, Frank Simaichl, Frank Storek, Jr. and Bertha Syptak.

Our lodge has participated in many charitable functions. They have contributed to the annual Fireman's Christmas Drive, to the Westview Care Nursing Home, to the Ambulance Fund, to the Perpetual Care of the Seymour Cemetery Association and the Statue of Liberty Fund. The lodge also helps prepare the meals at the funerals of deceased members.

Sales Representatives of Lodge 73 are Jerry Tomanek, Sr. (sold 4 policies), Raymond Pavliska (11 policies), Jesse Hajek (5 policies) and Peggy Blankenship (4 policies).

Frank Simaichl was named "Fraternalist of the Year in Lodge 73. His achievements are in establishing perpetual care for the SPJST Cemetery, in getting a new entrance to the cemetery built and numerous activities in the VFW. He also participates in many activities in his church and has been named Honorary Chapter Farmer of the Seymour FFA Chapter.

Lodge No. 77 of Bomarton asked to merge with Lodge No. 73 of Seymour and on January 1, 1988 the merger was complete. The two lodges became one and go under the name of Lodge Sam Houston No. 73. The Bomarton lodge had a membership of 45 with two sales representatives; namely, Otto Ptacek (selling 2 policies) and Charles Bursey (1 policy).

There were three 50 - year SPJST members, Adolph Bartos, Bedrich Bartos and Milton Bartos.

Lillie Ptacek was named "Fraternalist of the Year" of her lodge last year. She had been secretary of her lodge for 30 years. She has participated in church and club functions. She is a member of the Bomarton Extension Homemakers Club.

Since the merger, Lodge 73 has a total of 225 members with 6 sales representatives. They have sold a total of 27 insurance policies.

There has been a total of 13 50-year members in the past four years.

The new Lodge 73 officers are President - Jerry James Tomanek, Vice President - Frank Simaichl, Secretary - Alice Orsak, Treasurer Raymond Pavliska and Youth Leader Kathy Stutsman.

History Of Lodge No. 81, Needville

When an individual or organization reaches the age of 78 years, there are always noticeable changes which have evolved. Lodge 84 has experienced many such changes. Since its first meeting on February 20, 1910, when a few concerned people gathered in a building located where the Dallas City Hall now stands, to another temporary location and on to the purchase of land and the erection of a building on our present site, there have been many changes. The first building itself has been replaced with another, and that building has been remodeled, enlarged and renovated numerous times.

Additional property has also been purchased adjacent to and across from the original site. All these external physical changes have been executed in an effort to better serve our membership, the many functions held there, and yes, even the community around us. Just as our name "Pokrok" indicates, Lodge 84 has continued to move ahead.

When Lodge 84 became a reality, it served a multitude of purposes, not the least of which was protection for its members and their families. The sale (or purchase) of insurance has been and always will be a prime source in the formation of lodges such as ours, but in the early days, people of like ethnic background also gathered together in these lodge groups to share and preserve the heritage, the language and the customs, including music and dance, which they and their forefathers had brought with them from the 'Old Country." They banded together to feel the comfort and security of familiar words and friendly gatherings where families could visit and become friends with other families of like circumstance who were also looking for support and camaraderie without having to suffer the barriers of language and customs. Thus it was that many lodges all over Texas formed to become the SPJST, a Texas oriented group. The membership at Lodge 84 now numbers 1460 adults and juveniles and some of these are descendants of these first members.

Through the years since Lodge 84's inception in 1910 many changes have taken place and these past four years have been no exception. Our lodge was among the first to enroll in the "Direct Billing Program," thus becoming computerized. This necessitated a re evaluation of the duties of Financial Secretary. We resolved this question by continuing to elect a financial secretary but adding to those duties that of Fraternal Coordinator. We are in hopes that this post will soon expand to include coordination between local lodge and the Supreme Lodge as well as other surrounding sister lodges within the area for an upgrade in communications. To this end, Lodge 84 has initiated a newsletter whose name was selected in a contest open to all members. The winning name, "Facts 'n' More from '84" was the brain child of Sister Dorothy Reznik. This newsletter is sent to all members of our lodge and serves as a communicational organ with a personal touch in addition to the general information they receive through the Vestnik.

Since the last report in 1984, Lodge 84 has celebrated its 75th Anniversary with a weekend of festivities on February 16 and 17, 1985 including a

Included on the program were Howard Leshikar, Cyrill Pokladnik, Jerry Bartos, the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra, the Dallas Czech Choral Group, a drawing for a diamond in commemoration of the Diamond Jubilee, and the usual presentations of 50 - year pins and Brother and Sister - of - the - Year Awards. Over 800 people attended both functions from places far and near, and a commemorative booklet published at that time still serves as a happy reminder of a truly exciting weekend at Lodge 84!

Lodge 84 has a total of 77 members who have held their membership in SPJST for 50 years. The last four years' additions are: 1985 - Jerry Fridrich, Leonard J. Jez, Frank G. Malik, Sr., Louis Prasifka, Woodrow W. Svoboda, Bessie Tardy and Joe Volcik, Jr.; 1986 - Jeraldine Becan, Emily Bernardo, Margaret James (now deceased), Libbie Janousek, Adolph Jez, Jr., Dorothy Reznik, Mary Schroeder and Jerry Urban; 1987 Lillian Hamusek, Agnes Hetmer, Bessie Kalich, Anton Krahulik, Mary Kubin, Wilbert Ruzicka, Janie Skotak,

Mary Skotak, Otto Skotak, Frank Steiner, Alberta Zastoupil, and Lili Zatorsky; 1988 - Otto Janousek, Stanley Laznovsky, William Charles Sill, George Slama, Helen Trojacek and Rosa Mae Walker. Each year Lodge 84 hosts an anniversary dinner and program and 50 - year members are honored and presented their pins during that time. Another traditional presentation which takes place during the anniversary program is the awarding of plaques for the Brother and Sister of the Year, those persons whom the membership elects to so honor for outstanding lodge work during the preceding year. Those brothers and sisters receiving awards since our last writing are: 1985 - Cheryl Petr and C.J. Olson; 1986 - Ida Schulz and Charlie Staglik; 1987 - Evelyn and Adolph Salac; 1988 - Bessie and Emil Petr. In addition to these, Brother Adolph Salac was honored as Fraternalist of the Year at Lodge 84 and his name was placed in nomination to the Supreme Lodge for state recognition.

Our young people in the Teen and Junior Clubs are very active, presenting great programs for lodge functions as well as entering the

They annually contribute money and hand crafted goods to the Brady Center (a charitable organization serving the needy in Dallas), the Scottish Rite Crippled Children's Hospital, the Child Abuse Program of Dallas, and many other charitable organizations in the area. These young people have also assisted in making a video - tape which will be used as examples for Beseda dancing in the state. They annually perform traditional Czech dances and songs at the State Fair of Texas, thus continuing the traditions begun by the forebearers in sharing their heritage and culture with others.

The physical property at our Floyd Street address has been altered over the past four years A new roof has added that "sense of security," while a new facade has brightened the exterior, and carpeting and wrought iron grating at the entry are much needed and beautiful improvements. Much of this work was done or overseen by members and sizeable contributions, also by members, have made these alterations possible. Inside new natural wood finished bar cabinets with mirrors and glass shelving and new refrigerated beverage boxes have updated the bar area. Other smaller projects too numerous to mention have been accomplished by our House Committee, and each of us at Lodge 84 is grateful to each of them for all the time and effort put forth by them to see that our building and grounds are in good order.

Lodge 84 contributes to many organizations such as the Child Abuse Program, Wednesday's Child (a Dallas based child placement program), and the Brady Center, along with memorials sent to honor deceased members to the charity of their family's choice. For the last four years we have requested that members who attend our Christmas Party bring canned goods or staple food items to distribute to the needy in our area.

This has been a big success and we hope that this caring/sharing event can grow even larger in the future.

In addition to the regular meetings and dances held at Lodge 84, we have hosted the Czech Cultural Society and

Fraternal Council on many occasions and are the rehearsal location for the Dallas Czech Orchestra, whose talents are displayed all over the State of Texas.

Lodge 84 has also fielded a softball team which this year, 1988, will celebrate its 35th Anniversary.

Brothers Ben David and Ben Jarma began this team and with the help of the Supreme Lodge, Mother Lodge and members and friends who have served as sponsors providing money each year for uniforms, equipment, etc. have continuously fielded a fast pitch team. The Mother Lodge, in addition to a sponsor fee, provides the Lodge Hall for a benefit dance which raises the money through certain tickets and entrance fee to keep this team going. We believe that no other team in Dallas in the fast pitch league has ever fielded a team for this length of time, and we are proud of our boys and their accomplishments.

Our President Ladis Navratil has been an outstanding sales representative since he's been a member of SPJST. His total sales for the last four years is $3,876,000. In 1987, he had a million dollars in insurance sales and nas been top sales representative every year since 1984.

He is serving his second term as president of our lodge.

Jerry Valchar is a sales representative of Lodge 87; he served as a director on the Texans of Czech Ancestry in the Sesquicentennial Year (1986); he also serves on the State SPJST Finance Committee representing District II. Ladis Zatopek, also an insurance sales representative of Lodge No.. 87 serves on the State SPJST By - law Committee representing District II. Sidney Kacir is Legal Advisor of the State SPJST Society.

SPJST Lodge No. 87 is located on Middle Road on a beautifully scenic 43 acres of land in the eastern part of the Temple city limits near East Loop 363.

Many outings, barbecues and picnics have been enjoyed by members and guests along the shady Williamson Creek and nature trails.

Lodge 87 was chartered April 25, 1910. The membership is approximately 800.

Our present home was constructed by its own membership.

We will always remember the dear members and friends who contributed and gave of their precious time and efforts to help with our lodge home.

In late 1987, Frances Olexa, a member of Lodge 88 for 69 years was recognized by the Supreme Lodge as the winner of the Fraternalist of the Year Award.

This is the first time the Supreme Lodge initiated a program to recognize achievements of members. Lodge'88 is proud of this recognition.

Lodge 88 has not hosted a convention since 1972.

An expansion program for Lodge 88 is now in progress. The chairman of the Building Committee recently gave a report indicating that an annex to the present building is now on the drawing board. This addition is planned to accommodate at least 300 people. This expansion is found necessary because of the demands for additional meeting rooms and other social functions. This new area will be completely equipped and furnished with facilitie:, such as a dining area, kitchen and ', estrooms.

To CEFT: Social Night, in the amount of $3,750.00, the Men's Club in the amount of $2,630.00. This was made possible by sponsoring a dance which netted $1,325.64 and the balance of $1,304.36 was donated by individuals during the dance.

Donations by individual members to CEFT, approximately $12,050.00, and growing every day.

The Fraternal Activities Coordinator for Lodge 88 reports the donations made by members every month. In substance, this amounts to clothing, hardware, • kitchenware, books and miscellaneous items including eye glasses. His last report indicated that a total of 796 pairs of glasses had been brought in by members to be turned over to the LIGHTHOUSE for the BLIND. From the REPORTER ON BENEVOLENCE - for 1984 through April 1988 -- 66, 558 hours were donated toward general maintenance, yard work and fixtures. To charities, such as contributions to Nursing Homes, Day Care, etc., a total of 12,285 hours came from lodge members. Travel, flowers and miscellaneous was spent by individuals in the amount of $17,446.00.

History of Lodge Svaz echoslovanfi No. 92, F.ort Worth Brief

Lodge Svaz echoslovanu No. 92 was organized and admitted into the SPJST on September 4, 1910 with ten members meeting at the home of Brother Frank Paprskar. There were several members from Lodge No. 84, Dallas here to help the new members get the new lodge organized. Brother Frank Paprskar transferred his membership from Lodge No. 40, Hillje to help start Lodge No. 92.

The first officers elected were President Joe J. Juran, Sr.. Vice President Bohumil Carbock, Secretary Rudolph Koci, Financial Secretary J.W. Cihacek, Treasurer Vancil Becan, Guide Joseph Becan, Inside Guard Frank Zacek and Outside Guard Arnold Valka.

Charter members included Anna Becan, Anna Paprskar, Joe Juran, Sr., Bohumil Carbock, J.W. Cihacek, Rudolph Koci, Vancil Becan, Joseph Becan, Frank Zacek and Arnold Valka.

The meetings were to be held every second Sunday of the month. Sokol organization agreed, with Lodge No. 92, to build a lodge hall, but later the Sokols sold their part in 1919 to Lodge No. 92. In 1922, Lodge Osvetov K. Svoboda No. 79 combined their lodge with Lodge No. 92. That lodge was in Strawn, Texas which was noted for coal mining but, when oil was discovered around there, the mining was closed.

Most of the Czech members lived in the north part of Fort Worth due to the two large packing houses, namely, Swift and Armour and only a few members lived in South Fort Worth.

There were many dances and meetings at the building which was located at 2600 North Houston Street.

Many good times were enjoyed dancing to the different bands that played there.

Then, in 1938, members voted to build a new hall because the present building was small. After a few months, a new building was completed and its location is 3316 Roberts Cut Off Road. The first name of our building was Narodni Sin, which is National Hall; later they started calling it the Bohemian Club and most people still remember the name, but, as we all know, "Bohemian" is not the correct name for people of Moravian descent and they would rather not be called by that name, so the old name was put on the building and today it is the National Hall, again.

The lodge building on the outside has never been changed but the inside has been remodeled several times.

There was a fire in the building in March, 1979 and, at that time, a general remodeling was done. There are plans to do some remodeling in the kitchen and bar area again, soon.

A new storage cooler has been put in the basement so it would not take up space in the bar area.

We always celebrate the opening of the lodge and many of our friends come to enjoy the fellowship. The outside parking is paved and marked off and there is plenty of room for parking. Until a short time ago, we still had several charter members but now only some of their relatives attend our meetings with the new members who are secured by the good sales representatives of our lodge.

There are a few past presidents among the membership and some are still active as officers of the lodge.

They are Joe Juran, who is the son of a charter member, Joe Paprskar who is the son of the late Frank Paprskar who started Lodge No. 92. Carl W. Zich is presently reporter. Al Kercho is a trustee, Kenneth Krivanek is a trustee and Albert Kubala is president and has served several years in that position.

There are several older members who attend the meetings; one of them, Bennie Bartek, is 91 years of age. We are pleased that the late Joe Bartek, a longtime president and organizer, with Sister Bartek had spent so many hours making our lodge what it is today.

The lodge has a Youth Club which is helping to keep the younger members interested in lodge activities. Gordon Hubenak is the youth leader and his wife, Cheryl, is his assistant.

Highlights Of Lodge No. 133, San Antonio SPJST Lodge No. 133, San Antonio was chartered on March 17, 1917.

Membership -- Since 1984 the lodge has a total of 193 paid - up members, 35 who have annuities and 99 who are premium paying members.

The 50 - year members of our lodge are listed below: 1984 -- Hildegard Balvin, Mary Bransford, Lillie Creech, Aloise Dressler, Annie Lukasik and Bettie Naquia; 1985 -- Anna Riley; 1986 -- Gus Vanek; 1987 -- Charlie Kutil, Florine Burgin, Estelle Jones and Rudolf Valchar; 1988 -- Julius Barborak, Jerome Dusek, Lucille Hill, Joe Holub, Ida Kilday, Elizabeth Kitowski, Dr. Leon Kopecky and Idonia Lieberman.

SPJST Lodge Volna Cechie No. 135, Ennis, Texas, was organized July 28, 1917, the same summer as Sokol Karel y Havlieek BorovskY opened its new brick building. The lodge was initiated by Method Pazdral assisted

by August Morris with six charter members, namely, Karel Laznovsky, Vaclav Laznovsky, Frank Pekarek, Th. Gazura, Karel Hejkal and Jan Homolka. The lodge's first slogan was "Vse pro vlast," meaning "Higher for our Country."

The first lodge officers were President Frank Moucka, Vice President Louise Houdek, Honorary President Frank Petr, Sr., Secretary Karel Hejkal, Financial Secretary Karel Laznovsky and Treasurer Vaclav Hejny.

Throughout the war, the lodge supported patriotic activities. Money was collected from members to send tobacco to soldiers. A United States flag was purchased for the Sokol stage in honor of the soldiers. In late 1917, three of the charter members joined the service -- Jan Homolka, Karel Hejkal, and Frank Pekarek. In January, 1918, all members of the lodge joined the Narodni Zdruieni.

This Czech organization, nationwide, supported war efforts and did work similar to the Red Cross.

Our lodge, together with Sokol, had a library of Czech books. These were housed in a special room at Sokol. As the demand for Czech books decreased, it was decided to donate the books to the SPJST Supreme Lodge Library in 1970. Our long term librarians were Brothers Vaclav Laznovsky, Wesley Tupy and Wesley F. Laznovsky.

Throughout our existence we have enjoyed the brotherhood of other Czech organizations. Together we have promoted the Czech heritage and have passed through the trails and tribulations of the early years in this country. It was through our close association with others who shared Sokol Karel HavWeek BorovskY as its

home that our forefathers gathered and bound together in their new country.

Lodge Volna Cechie continues to make its home with Sokol. We have worked with Sokol as it has grown.

After our first home at Sokol had to be condemned, in 1936, we moved with Sokol into its fourth building. Here we enjoyed many memorable years. As Sokol outgrew its facilities, plans were made for the fifth and present home.

Our lodge worked with Sokol and, through our efforts, provided for the financial assistance of the Supreme Lodge. in 1971, Sokol Karel Havlfeek BorovskY's new home -- the Sokol Gymnastic Center -- was completed. In 1972 Sokol Tyrs Pool was dedicated.

We also provided Sokol assistance when, in 1974, thirteen acres of additional land adjoining the original property were purchased.

Our members were very busy in the early days. Activities included many Czech plays and annual events such as the PosvIcenf. May celebrations and Czech Independence Day in October.

Czech schools were also sponsored on a regular basis. We were also always very proud that we had a Sokol band.

Known as the Moucka Band, it was the Sokol band and played at all the dances at the Sokol. The leader was Brother Frank Moucka who served as our first lodge president, and who later became Vestnik editor. Also serving in the band was a Sokol leader and SPJST member, Brother L.O. Hosek, who also later served as SPJST Vestnik editor.

Our lodge has been represented at all conventions since 1920. When the convention was held in Ennis at Lodge 25, in 1932, our lodge presented a Czech play. In the 1956 Convention Brother Joe B. Hejny, our financial secretary and organizer, and district organizer, was elected vice president of the Supreme Lodge, SPJST. With his move to Temple, Texas, Volna Cechie and Sokol of which he served as president, lost a very hard worker, however, he remained a constant supporter until his death in 1978.

An active part has been played in District III activities. Lodge 135 hosted the first District III meeting at Sokol on March 31, 1957. Since then many district meetings have been hosted by our lodge. Brother Frank A. Laznovsky served as District III vice president during the early years of the district. He also served as the first District III Director S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Taylor. He was on the committee to select the rest home site.

For many years, Lodge 135 had a very active youth club. It received many recognitions as an outstanding club. Sister Patsy Moucka Slovak, our youth leader for many years, was recognized as first place youth leader in the district in 1969 and as "Youth Leader of the Year" in 1971. The lodge hosted many District III Youth Activity Days and State Achievement Days. In 1972, our lodge queen, Sister Bobbie Moucka, became the District III queen, while the Lodge King Marvin Patak became the State King.

The Youth Club work included donations to civic organizations, help to needy families, participation in camp and many social activities.

Easter egg hunts and Christmas parties were sponsored with Sokol. Even before the years of an organized youth club, the youth of the lodge and Sokol presented Mother's Day and Father's Day programs. The Youth Club was disbanded in 1977, because of the non - availability of a leader. The youth continue to be included in activities at Sokol. SPJST youth, who are Sokol gymnasts, participated in the first

Wednesday, June 15, 1988—VESTNIK/15 SPJST Fraternal Family Day. Lodge 135 has been a member of the Ennis - Dallas Fraternal Council since 1956. Many of the council meetings have been hosted at our lodge. The council sponsors projects for, the needy and joins in fraternal activities with other fraternal organizations.

Lodge social activities include an annual membership dinner each year.

This occasion climaxes our annual project to help the abused children.

Generous contributions have been made to the organization that works with this worthwhile project.

The lodge also participates in the National Polka Festival -- "A Little Bit of Czechoslovakia" -- held in Ennis the first weekend of May each year. Thousands visit our home during this very festive weekend. Members attend the Czech Day at the State Fair each year and for many years lodge representatives have danced the Beseda on this occasion.

The 50th anniversary of the lodge was celebrated on August 13, 1967.

Held at Sokol, the day included a dinner and a program. Twelve members of 50 years or more were recognized. Brother Joseph Vytopil was recognized as an outstanding member for his many years of service and devotion to the lodge. A memorial tribute was paid to 50 deceased members. Two of our members died serving our country -- Brother Milton Hejkal in 1942 in the Phillipine Islands and Brother Raymond Hejny in 1953 in Korea. The speaker of the day was Supreme Lodge Vice President Joe B. Hejny.

Lodge meetings were conducted in the Czech language until 1968.

Our lodge has been served by thirteen presidents. Of these, Brother Josef Danek served 10 years; Brother Karel Laznovsky and Brother Vaclav Tupy, 9 years; Brother Frank L. Hejny and Brother Eric Moucka, 6 years.

Brother Tom Valek is currently serving his 17th year as president. Brother Vaclav Tupy served as vice president for 14 years and Brother Wm. Bouska served for 7 years.

Brother Joseph Vytopil served in the secretary position for 31 years. Sister Mary A. Laznovsky served in the position for 25 years. Sister Sylvia Laznovsky is currently serving her 7th

year as secretary. Brother Jerry Chudej is serving his 25th year as financial secretary. Brother Vaclav Laznovsky had served in the position for 14 years, Brother Karel Laznovsky for 13 years and Brother Joe B. Hejny for 9 years.

The office of treasurer of our lodge has been held by only three people.

Brother Vaclav Hejny, our first treasurer, served for 22 years. He was followed by Brother William Bouska for 9 years. Brother Frank A. Laznovsky is currently serving his 41st year in the position.

We presently have 25 members of 50 or over years of membership. These are Brother Jim Pavelka, Brother Frank A. Laznovsky, Sister Emily Vytopil, Brother Lewis Janousek, Brother Leslie Vrla, Brother Joe Janousek, Sister Mildred Baker, Sister Annie Koubek, Brother Charles A. Bouska, Sister Olga Ewing, Brother Frank W. Hejny, Sister Lillie Hejny, Brother Vladis Lucan, Brother Frank Petr, Sister Libbie Wisniewski, Brother Leslie Bouska, Sister Lillian Bouska, Brother Frank J. Brown, Brother Jerry Hejny, Brother Emil Moucka, Brother Jerry Laznovsky, Brother Jerry J. Laznovsky, Brother William F. Hejny, Sister Alice Roberts and Sister Sylvia Laznovsky.

Throughout our existence, our lodge has progressed under the leadership of many staunch supporters. Among these were Brother Wesley Tupy, a member of 64 years, who passed away in 1973 at the age of 84 and Brother Joseph Vytopil, a member of 56 years, who passed away in 1973 at the age of 83 years.

Our membership is currently 302.

Lodge No. 139, Danbury DANBURY [BRAZORIA CTY.] Lodge 139 organized June 30, 1918 and has a total membership of 466 with approximately $4,000,000 worth of insurance. There are six 50 - year

1984. Besides the charitable contributions, the lodge has held free barbecues for members to the amount of $4,150.

The four sales representatives of Lodge 139 are Helen Filipp, Lonnie Lostak, Tommie Lostak and Joe Vrazel. Helen Filipp was one of the top 30 sales representatives in 1985, 1986 and 1987. She won trips to the Bahamas, Nashville and Las Vegas.

History Of Lodge 160, San Angelo [June 1984 - May 1988] Lodge T.G. Masaryk No. 160 at San Angelo was chartered November 7, 1937. The total membership presently is 580.

Lodge 160 has made a total of $4,056 in contributions in the last four years.

Hubert Drgac received a plague from the membership in thanksgiving for his time as president of Lodge 160.

Lodge No. 172, Pasadena (History, 1984 - 1988) The last four years have brought many exciting and important changes to Pasadena Lodge_ No. 172, but perhaps the most notable event of our recent history has been the happy and productive merger between our membership and that of a sister Lodge, Galveston No. 173. The 1985 incorporation of the two lodges -- one of the many successful projects undertaken by then President Albert Risinger -- not only increased our membership but brought welcome reserves of experience from our fellow officers at Lodge 173. Thanks to their input, we have grown in more than numbers, gaining important influence at the local, district and state level.

Another noteworthy development, and one which has taken place only in the last year, has been our lodge's origination of the Gulf Coast Czech Festival. Thanks to its popularity, the festival will become a regular part of our offerings, to be held annually during the first weekend in November.

It will also coincide with the anniversary of the opening our lodge's new home, completed in 1982.

All in all, Lodge 172 has come a long way since its inception in 1969 (Sister Lillia Mae and Brother Victor Peter, who were largely responsible for the

lodge's activation, are still energetic participants). In the last four years, our membership has grown until we have become one of the top 15 lodges in the State; through the continued efforts of our sales representatives and officers, we hope to reach the Number Two spot in the future!

Improvements continue to be made to our building and parking lot; our weekly dances are drawing huge crowds, thanks to the hardworking members of our entertainment committee. Recent years have also seen our continued support of the Pasadena Volunteer Fire Department, and new lodge efforts on behalf of such organizations such as East Harris County Senior Citizens, Pasadena Junior Forum, and the Bridge (a home for abused women and their children).

Although the slump in the local economy has challenged the resources of our lodge, we are happy to report that Pasadena Lodge No. 172 still thrives. The past and continued financial liability of our organization is chiefly due to the efforts of a few highly dedicated members and officers. We thank them from our hearts...and look forward to four more years of growth, service and friendship.

Lodge Hill Country No. 185, New Braunfels The Hill Country Lodge No. 185 SPJST was organized May 14, 1976.

The date of charter was November 27, 1977 at the Saengerhalle in New Braunfels, Texas.

Our present membership numbers 81.

We have no 50 - year members and no one has outlived his life insurance policy.

Our approximate total contributions to charity during the last four years was $350.

Dwight Doeppenschmidt and Roy Haag are our sales representatives.

Insurance policies written during the last four years amounted to $23,000.

The youth of our lodge are a group of very active youngsters with an enthusiastic leader.

Since we do not have a building to call our lodge home, we meet at the Bavarian Village in New Braunfels.

Uncorrected Minutes Of District VI Spring Meeting The spring meeting of District VI SPJST was held at the American Legion Hall in Hallettsville, April 24, 1988 with Lodge No. 4, Hallettsville as host.

The meeting was called to order by President Albert Olsovsky at 1:30 p.m.

The colors were presented and the pledge to the flag was led by District Flag Bearer John Thomas Richardson.

The National Anthem was led by Valerie Roye.

Lodge No. 4 President Annie Vahalik welcomed everyone and thanked all her committees for their hard work. The response was given by District 1st Vice President Katherine Wokaty.

There was a moment of silence in respect of our deceased members, followed by District 2nd Vice President Annie Vahalik reading the list of those departed since the last spring meeting.

District Youth Counselor Anita Roye introduced her assistant, Karen Kaspar, who presented the youth program. Lodge No. 40, El Campo Hillje, recited some poems on the funny side of life and sang a song.

Lodge No. 32, Victoria, presented a skit. Lodge No. 30, Taiton, had several youth members play piano selections, sing and dance. The Taiton Youth Club also sang two group songs. All the youth clubs joined to sing the SPJST Fraternal Song.

Youth Counselor Roye presented the following report, March 25 - 27, she attended a Youth Leader's Retreat at Camp Lone Star, where they were taught the Beseda and Taroky. She had just returned from a district counselor's training session with the state youth counselor. A youth retreat had also been held with three teenagers from District VI attending. Some upcoming events would be summer camp at Camp Wagon Wheel - June 27 through 30, an educational tour in July, the District YAD in Victoria in July and the State YAD, August 21st.

Some youth from the district would be participating at the convention and at the Texas Fraternal Congress. There will be a volleyball tournament and local lodges are asked to get up teams

Holy and former -s Janet March and Elsie All district officers res ponded to the roll call of officers, with exception of Treasurer Anton Kelner, Jr. in that roll call of standing committee members, Michael Ahlstrom, Sophie Dybala and Laverne Bacak were absent. Eleven lodges were represented in roll call of lodges.

Minutes from the spring meeting of 1987 were read and approved after an addition of Katherine Wokaty -, presented a plaque to former Youth Counselor Janet Marek. The fall meeting of 1987 minutes were also read and approved.

Vice President Wokaty read a list of 50 - year members from the district.

One of these members was present Adelle Pohl.

Due to the absence of the treasurer, there was no treasurer's report.

District VI Director Matt Vanek brought greetings from the Home Office. He reported 76 lodges were on direct billing, which were composed of 49,728 certificates or 75 percent of certificates in force. A workshop had been held in Academy where lodges helped lodges. The SPJST was going to offer defensive bartendering training and any lodge interested should contact Secretary - Treasurer Leonard Mikeska. The fee would be $15 per person. All lodges were asked to send in their 990 and 990T reports.

The SPJST has assets of $55 million, a surplus of $13 million and a lot of liabilities. Several youths from the district would be performing at the convention, along with Jo Thompson, the current "Miss Texas," who is a member of SPJST. The upcoming State SPJST Queen would participate in six events, with the District VI winner having an opportunity to participate in two functions. Georgia Dorotik was responsible for starting the idea that each district should have one scholarship winner from their youth clubs. April 30th would he the deadline to send in scholarship applications. The new postage rates have raised the cost of mailing 998 Vestniks to $2200 a week. Director Vanek reminded everyone the checkout times at the hotels for the convention were 1 p.m. Due to a baseball tournament being held that weekend in Temple, delegates may not get in their rooms until 3 p.m. Director Vanek said loans were available for farms and homes at the following interest rates: 9-1/4 percent for 10 years, 9-1/2 percent for 11 to 15 years and 93/4 percent for 16 to 20 years.

Commercial loans were available for 10-1/2 percent for one to 10 years and 11 percent for 11 to 15 years. At our next district fall meeting, quilting, pastry and horseshoe tournaments would be held. Director Vanek said the state examination was completed December 31st and we had a good report.

At this time, Director Vanek asked district members if they felt it was feasible for District VI to host the SPJST Convention in 1992. The last time it was held in District VI was in 1936 in East Bernard. Victoria and El Campo were the larger towns in

18/VESTNIK-Wednesday, June 15, 1988 District VI but only Victoria had the motel space. Rita Vanek of the Finance Committee said the Supreme Lodge is assisting with the cost for the first night. She also said Monta Foster, who had helped plan the Corpus Christi convention, would assist District VI. Adolph Motal asked if Director Vanek felt the Supreme Lodge would help with the expenses.

Leona Macha said the By - Law Committee did not put anything in the by - laws about financing but did make a recommendation to the Supreme Lodge. Director Vanek asked the members, "If everything would be in order, would we want to host the convention?" Anita Roye asked if a committee would be appointed. The answer was yes. Director Vanek was asked if the mayor of Chamber of Commerce in Victoria would have to be checked with first. He said Victoria had the facilities and the Chamber of Commerce would help Ella Arnold said the Chamber of Commerce wants conventions and Katherine Wokaty said the businesses in Victoria always helped with the Taroky Tournament.

Annie Vahalik made a motion that District VI be a contender for the 1992 convention. Frankie Vanek seconded it and the motion passed.

Director Vanek concluded by saying he enjoyed being the district director and he would be a candidate for re election.

By - Law Committee member Leona Macha said the By - Law Committee had met several times with their final meeting set for May 7th. At that time they would decide on the final copy so it could be sent to the Vestnik by May 11th for the May 18th issue. Fifty - one lodges, members or the Supreme Lodge had been heard from. Now it was up to the delegates to vote. Mrs. Macha concluded by asking for re election.

Finance Committee member Rita Vanek reported the Finance Committee had also met several times with the Supreme Lodge present. The final report would be in the May 18th issue of the Vestnik. Not everything financial would be in the report because some things should be left to the management. Some items in the report were the restoration of the first 25 lodges, six of whom have original buildings (four in District VI), cemetery restoration and more money for the districts and youth clubs.

Fraternalism and insurance sales would have to be continued. Hardship cases would be due May 30th. Mrs. Vanek also concluded by asking for re - election.

Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas said the SPJST had a very good year in 1987 but with $41 million in liabilities, we should be careful of our spending.

The top three salesmen in District VI on the Sales Representatives Honor Roll were Matt Vanek (Lodge No. 32),

Jerome Hlavaty (Lodge No. 153) and Adolph Motal (Lodge No. 32). For the second consecutive year, Jerome Hlavaty sold over $4 million. In the Summary of Sales and Assets, $1,285,000 was made in 1987. We now have $100,000 policies and the minimum for Universal Life is $25,000. The SPJST also has annuities and IRAs. The 20 - year endowment policies have been discontinued because of tax purposes. We have $234 million of insurance in force. For every $100 liability, there is $132 to back it up, making the SPJST better than the 25 largest insurance companies. The report from the last examination of the Texas Board of Insurance was very favorable. An independent audit had also been done because the By - laws require a $16,000 fidelity bond and it was much cheaper with the audit.

Approximately sixty $500 scholarships will be given out. Financial Secretary Mikulas said he would be a candidate for re - election. He concluded by presenting the following checks: $100 for the YAD held in Victoria - July 31, $450 for the General Fund and $1971.55 for the Youth Fund, representing 35 cents for each certificate in the district.

Rest Homes Director Erwin Holy brought greetings from the rest homes and reported both were full. They were in good shape but some things had to be updated. At the last convention, a study for a retirement home for the aged was proposed. A report would be given at the June convention. The cost to stay at a home is $34.14 a day. Our S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes were fortunate to be able to pay their debts and make money.

There was no old business.

Under new business, a letter from the Supreme Lodge about the quilt, horseshoe and pastry tournaments that were forthcoming, was read. They suggested $25 plus a plaque as a prize.

Rita Vanek asked what would be involved. Financial Secretary Mikulas said rules and regulations would be mailed. Anton Kelner suggested we let the host lodge decide about the tournaments. Rita Vanek made a motion that the district officers and host lodge make the decisions about the activities. Joe Nezval seconded it and the motion passed.

Joe Nezval made a motion that a plaque be presented to Anton Kelner, Jr. for serving as the district treasurer for many years. The motion was seconded and passed.

Rita Vanek suggested we buy a pole for the district banner. Katherine Wokaty seconded it and the motion passed. Johnny Richardson moved that we also purchase a Texas flag.

This motion also passed after a second from Rita Vanek. Johnny Richardson said he would see to the purchasing of

;to .the by ♦aws but did make a recommendation to the Supreme Lodge to study the feasability of getting such a center. It will be up to the delegates to vote on it.

Anton Kelner said he would bring it up at the convention and that he has asked for it before. $38,000 was being allocated for camp each year and this money could go to a center.

Leona Macha reminded delegates to bring the Vestnik with the reports to the convention.

The Nominating Committee, composed of Joe Nezval and William Berkovsky, Mike Ahlstrom being absent, presented the following slate of officers: President - Katherine Wokaty, 1st Vice President - Annie Vahalik, 2nd Vice President - Janet Marek, Secretary - Elaine Berkovsky, Treasurer - A.J. (Tony) Kelner, District Youth Counselor - Anita Roye, Assistant Youth Counselor Karen Kaspar and Flag Bearer Stephanie Roye. President Olsovsky asked for nominations from the floor, twice. There being none, Joe Nezval made a motion that the slate be accepted. Eddie Vrana seconded it and the slate of officers, as recommended by the Nominating Committee, was approved.

Victoria will be the site of the fall meeting with Victoria, Placedo, Inez and La Salle hosting.

A Czech Fest would be held in Victoria and a garage sale in Moravia.

It was also announced a paper would be circulated for members to sign for get well wishes to Anton Kelner, Jr. One hunded and ten people had registered and door prizes were presented.

The meeting was adjourned, followed by installation of offices, drawing and lunch.

Dear SPJST Members: Due to the convention being held on the week of our June Lodge 172 monthly meeting, the meeting will be held Wednesday, June 29th at 7:30 p.m. Let me encourage our members to attend; our delegates will give a report of the State Convention being held in Temple on June 20th, 21st and 22nd.

Our Entertainment Committee has scheduled some special treats for the Saturday night, July 2nd dance; the Wilderness Band with Henry Repka will provide country/western, polkas and waltzes and patriotic music. Ice cream, watermelon and hot dogs will be available. The lobby and hall will be decorated with flags and other appropriate items to celebrate Fourth of July on the 2nd of July. Please plan to attend.

Although summertime is here, our dances still continue to draw large crowds. Several new country/western bands have increased our attendance and the Friday night ballroom dances are scheduled for July and August, again.

Thanks to Tommy Wallace's plan on increasing our performance of the air conditioning, we have fewer complaints from our dance guests, now. Our lodge building has approximately 100 tons of airconditioning and now it is evenly distributed.

I hope to see many of my friends at the convention.

Lodge 187, Round Rock Holds 8th Annual May Fete Round Rock Lodge No. 187 held its 8th annual May Fete on Sunday, May 15th. Activities began at 4 p.m. with the pledge to the flag. The flag bearers were Donny Leschber and David Fritz.

Introductions of Lodge 187 President Gene Landry, Lodge 187 Chairman of Board of Trustees Arnold Leschber and Mistress of Ceremony Sharon Holman, were made.

President Howard Leshikar and State Youth Director, representation of Supreme Lodge, were also present.

This year being leap year, a king was selected to represent Lodge 187. Mr. Shawn Oman, son of Red and Joann Oman of Hutto was crowned 1988 May Fete King. Banner Guard was his brother, Troy Oman and Cushion Bearer was Ronnie Leschber.

King Shawn selected Kim Copeland, daughter of Weldon and Carolyn Copeland of Hutto, as Queen. Her Banner Guard was Trisha Leschber.

Flower girls were Katie O'Neal, Nicki Hester and Stacy Nehring. Cushion Bearer was Tristan Almquist and Train

SPJST Softball Team Report-Lodge No. 84, Dallas Dear Brothers and Sisters: Our Tuesday night, May 31st game vas rained out and was postponed to be played the following week as a makeup game.

Tuesday night, June 7, we played the Oak Cliff Saints and we won the game by a score of 3 to 0. Randy Furlow was the winning pitcher allowing 4 hits, 2 walks, 6 strikeouts and no runs.

Leading hitters were Paul Bartos Lodge 187 May Fete Prince and with 3 singles, Don Lennox with a The 1988 Lodge 187 May Fete King Princess for 1988 -- Mr. Jack double, Jim Zoller with a single, Roger and Queen -- Mr. Shawn Oman, son of Mangham, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Little with a walk and David Mr. and Mrs. Red Oman of Hutto and Mangham and Miss Loretta Edmiston, Andreason with 2 walks. This was a Miss Kim Copeland, daughter of Mr. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Brian 6:45 p.m. game. We had a makeup and Mrs. Weldon Copeland of Hutto. game at 9:35 p.m. against Trans - Con. Edmiston.

Needless to say, the second game results are not as good as the first game. We dropped the game by a score of 7 to 0. Lionel Schulz hurled a creditable game, but could have used better support afield. We had a couple of our starters missing against the best team in the city and possibly state; it did make a difference on the outcome of our game. His record read 10 hits, no walks and 5 strikeouts.

Hitters, offensively for our team were Randy Furlow with a double, Craig Woods earned a triple, Lionel Schulz made a single and Jim Zoller, a sacrifice hit. Despite a win and a loss for the night, the team enjoyed playing and this finishes our schedule for this league.

Our league record - ended up with 4 wins and 4 losses; not too bad since we could have easily won 2 of the games we lost. Now, the format is all teams' play in a League Championship Playoffs to determine the League Champ and other teams to qualify TAAF Regional Tournament in Bryan, Texas. I just checked with the Dallas Athletic office and was given a tentative date for the playoffs -- the The Beseda Dancers from Temple provided entertainment at the May Fete. last weekend in June.

20/VESTNIK—Wednesday, June 15, 1988 themselves into societies or brotherhoods to protect themselves from oppression by despotic governments and unjust laws. One of the prominent societies or brotherhoods in the mid - 1700s._ was the "Sons of Liberty," who, among other things, opposed the "Stamp Act of 1765."

The words "brotherhood" and "fraternity" can be used interchangeably, without losing or changing the very meaning of a thought. In the late 1700s the motto of the leaders of the French Revolution, who were greatly influenced by the American Revolution; was "Liberty, Equality and Fraternity."

Since its inception, the size and shape of the United States has changed dramatically. Our country is constantly changing in its technology, economy, moral values and stature within the world community. Fraternal organizations are also constantly changing, each according to the needs of their individual members. In today's age, organizations of all kinds still hold a great influence upon government and elected officials, however, the influence of fraternal organizations seems to be on a decline.

There is no doubt that the insurance and annuity programs are the most important function of the SPJST, but the heart and soul of our organization is "fraternity" or "brotherhood."

The insurance and annuity programs are a visible expression of that brotherhood -- fraternalism. It has been suggested that our membership grows as a direct result of our insurance and annuity programs and that the fraternal aspects of our organization are diminishing. While this may be true to some extent, it is essential that we remember the precepts of our founding fathers who placed great importance upon fraternalism through their mutual - aid and social contact.

The largest fraternal organization in the United States exists without any form of insurance or annuity program and is satisfied to offer its members only brotherhood and the opportunity to . participate in its charitable activities. In spite of its decline of membership in recent years, it remains a strong moral force because it practices brotherhood.

The revolution of 1776 released such a strong force that still has an immeasurable impact upon the whole world. That force is the power of freedom and liberty. Once savored and experienced, it has become the motivating force behind all that stands for individual rights, security and happiness, which, when summed up, simply amounts to brotherhood.

Our nation, throughout the years, has opened up its arms and stretched forth its hand of brotherhood to people of all nationalities, including those of Czech ancestry, and continues to offer opportunity to all who seek security, peace, prosperity and happiness within our borders.

Although these freedoms and opportunities are freely offered, the individual must work for them and labor diligently to maintain and preserve them.

Now, as never before, there is a need for people to work together, in a common cause, to attempt to preserve the basic tenents of fraternalism in our country. As long as the pressures of everyday life make almost unreasonable demands upon our time and physical stamina, there is need for that fellowship and social interaction that can only be enjoyed when one is taken out of the seemingly hostile attitude of everyday life. We have the

opportunity and responsibility to increase the fraternal aspect of our own SPJST. Our insurance and annuity programs are in place, being kept up - to - date by qualified officers and advisors. Most of our lodges have social functions that are available to all of their members. Most lodges have facilities that can be shared with civic minded groups. Most have the personnel to operate and promote charitable projects and programs within the community.

The fraternal side of our SPJST must be encouraged. We must keep alive the concept which resulted in the founding of our order. For it is the same concept that resulted in the Declaration of Independence over 200 years ago.

May 25, 1988 Dear Parents and Youth Campers: It will soon be time to attend SPJST Youth Camp. I'd like to take this opportunity to acquaint you with the Guidelines for Campers.

8. No discourteous acts toward anyone.

9. No hazing (pranks - harmless or otherwise) of fellow campers.

10. No throwing anyone into the swimming pool.

11. No abusing camp property or equipment. Any damage done while your group is at camp will be charged against your district's allocation and that means less money for your district and you as a camper. In addition, if you are caught, your parents will be called to come pick you up immediately. Vandalism of any sort will not be tolerated. ' 12. Each camper will keep everything orderly around his own bunk.

13. Good sportmanship and conduct will be observed at all times.

14. Alcoholic beverages will not be tolerated anywhere at any time by. anybody.

15. All camp areas will be cleaned before leaving camp. Campers will be expected to pick up all litter on the grounds and inside cabins where they stayed.

16. Necessary personal phone calls by campers will be made on a collect basis only. In the event this is not done, the camper will be charged later after the billing comes through.

You can show your appreciation of camp by observing all rules and accepted norms of behavior. Whatever you do will reflect on you first of all, on your family second, and on your lodge and district, and ultimately, the whole SPJST. Think about it. Enjoy yourself and have a good camp.

GUIDELINES FOR CAMPERS I. Effective January, 1984 the ages for camp will be 6 through age 16.

2. All campers will participate in all scheduled activities.

3. If you have to be late for a scheduled activity or cannot attend for some valid reason, it must be reported to the adult leader in charge.

4. (a) If you arrive in an automobile and it is to stay at camp until you leave, you will be permitted to unload your belongings, park it and not drive it during your stay at camp, except to leave in case of dire necessity or emergency. Upon arrival in your car, the key(s) to your car will be left with the DYC, who will give them to you in case of need or at your time of departure. The principal mode of getting around at camp is your feet; cars will not be used to transport persons from one location to another.

When driving onto and from the camp premises, the speed is 15 mph and will be strictly observed. Anyone driving in excess of this limit is endangering the lives of others. (b) Transporting campers to any activity site will be done by an adult.

NO CAMPERS; or LITs will be allowed to transport campers.

5. Except in case of an emergency, you will not be allowed to leave the camp grounds.

6. Lights OUT will be strictly observed -- QUIET! 7. No boys visiting in girls' quarters and vice - versa. No campers are to be in the staff cabins at any time and the

District V Youth Club Activities Dear Readers, A District V Youth Club social was held this past Saturday, June 4, 1988.

All who went met at Lodge No. 88 at 9:30 a.m. to head for Galveston.

The first event of the day was a ride on the Galveston tour boat, the

Wednesday, June 15, 1988—VESTNIK/23 Colonel. On the third floor of the boat, was a gift shop where members could buy a souvenir, but those who came without money to spend, had a ticket stub to keep for a souvenir.

After the relaxing ride on the Colonel, everyone took a stroll down the Strand. Some went to the Army Surplus Store to book around, and others went to the Candy Factory.

We also visited other shops along the Strand like Quackers where some people decided to buy a sailor hat since their friend, Crystal Wallace, already had one.

After an exciting time on the Strand, we decided to go eat at Shrimp and Stuff. Our DYC Marie Stayton treated us to a $6 meal for everyone.

After eating seafood, strolling the Strand, and riding the Colonel, we headed home to Houston. I'm sure everyone would agree that it was a day worth remembering. Also, the District V Y'outh Club thanks DYC Marie Stayton, her assistant, Nancy Steubing, and all the chaperones for a great day.

I would also like to remind all the youth and parents of District V that we are planning a day at Astroworld next month and a trip to San Antonio next year. Please come to the local youth and district club meetings for more details.

Dear Mc......bers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club held their monthly meeting on June 5 at 2:30 p.m. in the Taiton Community Center. The meeting was called to order by President Marcy Dorotik.

Five new members were welcomed.

The 1988 - 89 committees were announced and explained. District VI YAD will be held on July 31st at Victoria High School.

The July meeting will be held Wednesday, July 6 instead of Sunday, July 3rd. The adult meeting will be held at 2 p.m. and the youth club meeting will be held at 3 p.m.

We finished crafts and refreshments were served.

Lodge 24 Youth Club Dear Readers, The June 7, 1988 meeting of Lodge No. 24 Youth Club was called to order at 7:45 p.m. by President Christy Marek.

Tracie Chervenka led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. The roll was called by Secretary Melissa Holtman.

There were 8 members and 3 adults present. Guests introduced were Rebecca Luksa, Chad Bruggman and Mark Macek. Our attendance was narrowed this month due to summer activities.

The minutes were read and approved. Treasurer Kristie Waits gave her report. She then read the names of everyone who donated items to our hamburger supper held in May. It was a great success. Thanks to each and everyone who gave the items as well as their precious time and hard work. Also, thanks to those who supported us at this event.

The meeting was then turned over to DYC Frankie Klinkovsky, who reminded us about some upcoming

dates including District II YAD on July 10 at Taylor SPJST, Youth Club at Val Verde on July 21 - 27, State YAD on August 21 at the Frank Mayborn Center (note that this has been changed from Temple High School) and the District II fall meeting at Elgin on September 25th. Mr. Klinkovsky also encouraged us to enter YAD and participate in talent and royalty. He told us about camp and some activities including Camp Olympics and informed us about the special category at State YAD: Photography.

Our summer trip will be to Six Flags Over Texas on June 26th. For more information you may contact Rose Harvell.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 p.m. Door prizes were won by Mark Macek and Melanie Zavodny. We all enjoyed candy bars from Frankie after the meeting.

Before our meeting, the new Lodge 24 youth officers were installed by DYC Frankie Klinkovsky at the mother lodge meeting.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, The youth of Lodge 88, Houston, held their last meeting on Thursday, May 12, 1988. The meeting was called to order at 7:15 p.m. by President Crystal Wallace.

Brian Havemann led the pledge and we also stood for a moment of silent prayer for the good of our members.

Secretary Marlene Migl read the register. There were 18 members present. The secretary then read the minutes of our last meeting. There were no corrections or additions to the minutes.

We have $79.50 in our treasury. It was announced that dues need to be paid,preferably by the June meeting.

We had no correspondence.

There was no old business.

New business was the election of our 1988 - 89 officers. We elected new officers and committee chairpersons.

Our District V Youth Counselor Marie Stayton discussed the District V social with our members. We will be going to. Galveston to ride the Colonel.

Also attending our May Youth Club meeting was State Youth Director Claudette Reese. Mrs. Reese presented me the prize, a jam box, for being the grand - prize winner in the Camp T Shirt Design Contest. I also received an instamatic camera for being the winner in my age group. 1 am very proud to have achieved this honor and I would like to thank all of those involved, especially Mrs. Reese.

Wallace Crystal President adjourned the meeting at approximately 9:30 p.m. Dufing the meeting, we held a bake sale.

Our social for the month of May was held Saturday, May 21, 1988. We met at Delmar Lanes at approximately 2 p.m. to go bowling. All had a great time. Afterwards, we held a short meeting to discuss what the youth club will be doing for Splash Day on Sunday, June 5, 1988 at Lodge 88, Houston.

Our next meeting was planned for June 9, 1988. We planned many things to discuss and to plan for the new year.

This was the first meeting for our new officers. All officers and committee chairpersons were asked to attend this important meeting. We also planned a bake sale.

Dear Readers, El Campo - Hillje Lodge No. 40 held its monthly meeting on June 2nd.

Darren Dybala, vice president, called our meeting to order. Darren Dybala reported on a district meeting which was held on June 2nd.

Camp needs and behavior were discussed. Members were reminded to work on items for YAD. Father's Day cards and poems were shown and read.

The next meeting will be held on July 7th. Our next club contest will be to make an item about Fourth of July.

Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club Dear Brothers and Sisters: On Saturday, June 4, 1988, the youth of District V enjoyed going to Galveston on a social.

At 9:30 a.m., twenty - three youth club members and chaperones met at Lodge 88 in Houston. Once after everyone arrived at Galveston, we boarded the Colonel, a paddleboat which gives educational tours of Galveston's points of interest along the port. Everybody had a wonderful time viewing the sights along the route of the Colonel.

After the cruise, we headed for the historic Strand. We all enjoyed shopping and buying souvenirs at the many different little shops. Some youths bought candy and such at La King's Candy Factory, while others preferred purchasing items such as hats and jewelry at Quackers; still others liked looking around at the famous 'Strand Surplus Senter,' Colonel Bubbie's and some just enjoyed viewing the historical points of interest which are featured along the Strand. There were many other things one could do also.

Once everyone had a chance to buy souvenirs, we all went to eat lunch at Shrimp and Stuff. Everybody really enjoyed the delicious seafood, as well as po-boys, whiCh were served' tliere.

Overall, it was an exciting and fun day for the many youth and chaperones who attended the District V social to Galveston. The weather was great, and everyone had a great time. I hope to see all of you at our

next planned social, and District V YAD, which will be held at Lodge No. 88, Houston on July 17th.

Dear Readers, The June 8, 1988 meeting of Lodge No. 74 Youth Club was called to order at 1 p.m. by President Scott McKenney. Kibo Hyman led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and members remained standing for a moment of silence. Travis McKenney gave the treasurer's report.

This month's social was a Teen Dance at Lodge 74 on June 3, 1988 from 8 p.m. to 12 midnight. The charity project for this month will be donating a Czech book to the John K. Wooters Public Library.

Youth members enjoyed having Frito pie and cokes for refreshments.

Refreshments were served by Christy Millican, Rhonda Haynie, Sherry McKenney and Coco Hyman.

The after meeting activities were YAD practices. Our next Youth Club meeting will be July 13th at Lodge 74.

Dear Readers, On Sunday, June 5, Lodge 88 Youth Club participated in the lodge's annual "Homecoming With a Splash."

First of all, they helped by cleaning tables during meal time, until the pool opened up at 12 noon.

The youth club also had two booths that day. They sold snow cones at one booth and the other was a face painting booth. They charged 50 cents for the snow cones, and for the face painting which cost 25 cents for small items, 50 cents for medium items and 75 cents for larger items.

In all, the youth made a total of $65.15 selling snow cones and $6.75 at the face - painting booth.

After cleaning tables and having a money - making project, most of the youth took a dip at the local lodge pool.

Features

MORAVIAN [CZECH] CEMETERY Land for this cemetery was sold in 1889 by Josef Stasta (1833 - 1894) to Joseph Mekeska, president of Moravian Brothers Burial Ground.

The deed specified the land would be used exclusively for a Moravian cemetery. The cemetery contains eleven grave markers. All but one of the stones are inscribed in Czech. The one English - Language stone marks four graves. The earliest known burial is that of Marie Siptak (Jan. 19 - Feb. 16, 1885). The last interment took place in 1906. Though only fifteen graves are marked, the cemetery may contain as many as forty - one burials.

President Mikeska paid tribute to the late Albert Blaha of Houston, who was responsible for forming the Czech Heritage Society of Texas. Mr. Blaha authored several books on the Texas

Louis Kokes, vice president of our local chapter, handcarved the letters, "The Czech Heritage Society of Runnels, Concho and Tom Green counties" for a plyboard display, which he mounted on a pickup for the purpose of advertising the society in

parades such as Fiesta del Concho, the Ethnic Festival in Ballinger, Miles Cotton Festival and others.

Mr. Kokes spent many hours on this project; he stated he wore out several saw blades working on the hardwood.

Crafts are his hobby.

Members presented different ideas for entertainment which were tabled.

The next meeting will be held Sunday, August 14 at 2 p.m. in the SPJST Hall in Rowena.

The Miss Jean Schunek of Austin and Mr. Randall Heger of LaGrange were united in marriage on Saturday, May 21, 1988 at 2 p.m. at Saint Ignatius Catholic Marytr Church in Austin. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Klinkovsky of Austin. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Heger III of LaGrange.

After a cruise to the Caribbean Islands, the couple will make their home in LaGrange.

Adam Faraizl, an active member of Dallas Lodge No. 84's Youth Club, (where he first appeared on stage at the age of 2) has been keeping busy in the Fourth grade class at Hillside Academy For Excellence, (which is one of the three new Art Magnet Schools in Garland) where his studies keep him beyond the sixth grade level. He also studies Special Art, the recorder, piano and violin, and he still finds time to enjoy his favorite hobbies of Tae Kwon Do, computers and video games with his best friends.

In addition, he has done eight film shoots and six stage plays since his last "notice" appeared in the January 23, 1985 Vestnik!

The movie he filmed last year in San Antonio, "Johnny Be Good," has just finished showing in movie theaters around the country. He appeared as lead Anthony Michael Hall's younger brother.

He can next be seen this fall in the adaptation of Texan Larry McMurtry's Pulitzer Prize winning epic novel of Texas entitled "Lonesome Dove." It was filmed on location around Austin, Del Rio, and Santa Fe, New Mexico, and it will air as an 8-hour CBS miniseries which is scheduled to be shown on four days during the Thanksgiving holidays.

Adam is the son of Ray and Carole Faraizl of Garland; and grandson of Carolyn Nemec of Dallas, and Ed Faraizl and Ella Mae Faraizl, both of Fort Worth, all of whom are longtime SPJST members. ***

Obe strany se smifily na Konopiki a tally pod velenim Bofka z Miletinka proti Zikmundovi na Moravu. Jan Zaka mezitim opustil Tabor, kde se rozchazel s radikalnimi kne'Emi a zalcdil "menk Tabor" pH bratrstvu Orebskem. KDE—KAM These 2 words are probably misused more than any other. We frequently hear, "Kde jeder" This is wrong. To indicate the physical action of going somewhere, the word KAM is used: Kam jdeg ; Kam jeder The word kde indicates a stationary situation, and cannot be used to indicate physical action. SEM—JSEM We call words like these homonyms; they sound the same but have entirely different meanings. In English, some homonyms are: there, their, they're, bear, bare; and close, clothes.

SPRAVA—ZPRAVA Here are 2 tricky words, both written and pronounced exactly the same, but again have 2 entirely different meanings. It is therefore important that we know how to spell the one we wish to use.

SPRAVA— means administration, or SPRAVKA, which is a repair; or SPRAVITI, which means to fix or to repair.

Flag Day, June 14 In 1885, a nineteen-year-old school teacher who was later to become Dean of the Illinois School of Dentistry, held a brief patriotic flag raising in the Fredonia, Wisconsin, schoolyard. While he conducted the solemn ceremony, hoping to teach his pupils the honor due the flag of their country, it occurred to him that all U.S. citizens should take part in similar ceremonies -- that all of us should take time out to consider the meaning Hof our flag. He undertook to bring this about. Thirty - one years later, in 1916, Dr. Bernard J. Cigrand's efforts were rewarded as President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed June 14th. National Flag Day. Fraternalists, through the National Fraternal Flag Day Foundation, have kept alive the memory of Dr. Cigrand and his devotion to the U.S. flag. The Foundation has purchased the little schoolhouse at Fredonia, Wisconsin, now a national shrine. Each year on June 14, National Flag Day, a salute of honor is given the U.S. flag and the memory of Bernard Cigrand, who is credited with being the "father" of Flag Day. -Old Glory" held a special meaning for Dr. Cigrand, just as it holds a special meaning for all loyal and patriotic U.S. citizens. National Flag Day offers opportunity for you to display your patriotism by displaying your flag.
