Temple Mayor Signs Fraternal Week and Flag Day Proclamation Temple Mayor John Sammons, Jr., recently signed a proclamation designating the week of June 8-14 Fraternal Week in Temple and called upon citizens to join in observing Flag Day on June 14.

Mayor Sammons affixed his signature to the document in the presence of a delegation representing several Texas Fraternal Benefit Societies. Members of the delegation were as shown in the accompanying photo.

The SPJST is a member of the National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA), an association of 99 Fraternal Benefit Societies with a total membership of more than ten million. Each year these Societies observe Fraternal Week by holding special ceremonies and activities for the public in thousands of local lodges in communities throughout the United States. The highlight of the week this year will be the patriotic ceremonies on Flag Day to honor the Flag of the United States.

Mayor Sammons commended the fraternal representatives for their patriotism and urged all citizens of Temple and surrounding areas to take part in the observance by (Continued on Page 4)

Sister Albina Vanicek Outlives Policy Sister Albina Vanicek of Temple attained the grand age of 96 April 1, 1983, and became the 63rd person in the history of the SPJST to outlive the actuarial table of her life insurance policy.

A lifetime membership certificate was presented to her during a special

ceremony April 10, 1983. Sister Vanicek was honored by the presence of numerous members of her family, a host of friends and several officials of SPJST Lodge No. 24. Lodge No. 24 President David Vanicek extended congratulations to Sister Vanicek in behalf of the local lodge. Brother Vanicek, the grandson of the honoree, is currently president of the local lodge.

The surgery involves removal of most of the small intestine so food is not digested. Among the dangerous side effects could be: Cirrhosis, kidney damage and severe vitamin deficiencies. Consequently, it was agreed, on motion duly made and passed that: Inasmuch as a rather extensive study of owning our own camp site had been made prior to the Houston Convention in 1972 by a special committee of three persons whose findings were reported to that convention and published in the appendix to the Convention Proceedings of that convention, and those findings having been reviewed several times since then, it was determined that the feasibility of the SPJST owning its own camp site remains essentially unchanged, except for INCREASED costs in all areas since 1972. Further, that adequate facilities presently exist for holding sales seminars both in the Home Office and appropriate places throughout the state, and that adequate facilities for committee meetings exist in the Home Office and do not require a separate site for these two functions. Further, it was concluded that the sums involved in not only the initial purchase of such a site would be sizeable but the maintenance and general administration of such a site would not be in the best interests of the Society and that it remains more economically feasible to continue leasing camp facilities as has been the case in the past and that the interest alone earned on any such sum would far exceed the present annual leasing costs.

It was also agreed not to proceed with any further study or plans for a multipurpose activity center in the Temple area, as previously discussed.

Recess for lunch was taken at 11:30 a.m. During the noon recess, President Morris was honored with a surprise luncheon by the SL members in recognition for having completed 20 years of service as editor and president of the Supreme Lodge as of December 1st, 1982.

SPJST CALENDAR-Bids for the 1984 calendar were reviewed. The bid from Western Media was accepted on motion duly passed.

There was a review of what was to appear on the front panel.

Proposals were considered and decision was to be reached in July.

HISTORICAL MARKER-Plans were made for dedication of the Historical Marker in La Grange, Texas during the July SL Meeting.

It was decided generally to have a relatively short but dignified ceremony Sunday, July 10 at 2 p.m.

The July SL meeting would then begin at the Home Office in Temple at 9 a.m. July 11, 1983. It was agreed that the SL Officers work out an appropriate program.

NEW BUSINESS INCORPORATION OF LOCAL LODGES-Legal Advisor Kacir reviewed the incorporation of local lodges now permitted under our bylaws.

Recess for the day was taken at 4:45 p.m. until April 13 at 9 a.m.

SCHOLARSHIPS-After discussion, it was agreed that the Society Scholarship plan would not consider separate entity scholarships, and only donations to the Societyapproved plan would be administered by the Home Office. It was further agreed that local lodges be discouraged from setting up their

own separate scholarship funds because of administrative and other problems involved. Some of the problems encountered by separate local lodge scholarship account donations would be that they may not be tax exempt and the children of lodge officers and trustees may need to be excluded from applying for the local scholarships.

DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN RESOURCES PROJECT-There was a review and discussion of the guidelines for the Volunteer Coordinator.

Guidelines were formulated and approved.

CZECH LANGUAGE ALLOCATION-Report was heard from the Allocation Language Czech Committee concerning the recommended grants for 1983. The following were considered and approved for a total of $7,700: 1. Alvin Community College 2. Spring Branch ISD 3. Texas Tech 4. Northlake College 5. University of Texas 6. Lamar Jr. College 7. Sacred Heart High School 8. Eastfield College 9. Flatonia High School 10. San Jacinto College 11. U T Czech Club 12. Temple Junior College 13. Second Czech Conference NFCA SEMINARS-Report was made on the Fraternal Section and Press and Public Relations Section Seminars. There was a review of emphasis and importance of the Fraternal Questionnaire and also reports on use of Society publications. It was announced that the 1984 sectional meetings would be held in Texas. Vice President Gebala serves as secretary treasurer of the Fraternal Section and Director Pokladnik serves as a director of the Press and Public Relations Section.

TEXAS FRATERNAL CONGRESS -The SL was reminded of the upcoming TFC Board meeting in Temple April 25, and the upcoming TFC annual meeting in October.

WFLA CONVENTION-Authorization was granted to President Morris and Director Pokladnik to attend the WFLA Convention in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in August.

The next SL meeting was set to begin July 11, 1983 at 9 a.m.

There being no further business, the meeting ajdourned at 12:35 p.m.

FLAG DAY, June 14 June 14, 1983, will mark the 206th birthday of the Flag of the United States of America. The flag is a symbol of the faith held by the founders of our "one nation under God." The stars and stripes represent ten generations of Americans. The colors of our national emblem — the red, white and blue — have inspired patriotic Americans to heroic deeds and supreme sacrifice. The call of the colors brings out the best in most of us.

Current events give us reason to reaffirm our devotion to liberty, which is threatened in many parts of the world.

Flag Day is a day for us to remember our roots, be grateful for our blessings and rededicate ourselves to our basic American ideals.

The first Flag Day was proclaimed by President Woodrow

Wilson in 1916. The document that he signed 67 years ago was the realization of a dream for a former schoolmaster.

Bernard J. Cigrand, a 19-year-old schoolteacher in a tiny, stone schoolhouse at Fredonia, Wis., held the first known observance of "Flag Birthday" on June 14, 1885. A small American flag with only 38 stars in its field of blue was held upright in a bottle on his desk while he reviewed its history with his students and led them in a ceremonial pledge. That was the beginning of Cigrand's efforts to have a day set aside as "Flag Birthday" to honor the Flag of the United States.

A bronze marker attesting to the historical significance of Cigrand's patriotism and his love for the flag stands in front of the Stony Hill Schoolhouse in Fredonia.

The National Fraternal Flag Foundation and member societies of the National Fraternal Congress of America have made a national shrine of the Stony Hill Schoolhouse.

Each year members of the foundation conduct a flag-raising ceremony in the schoolyard and invite all Americans to recognize and honor the flag, symbol of our freedom.

In his original Flag Day message in 1917 President Wilson said: "This Flag, which we honor and under which we serve, is the emblem of our unity, our power, our thought and purpose as a nation. It has no other character than that which we give it from generation to generation. The choices are ours."

Members of fraternal benefit societies throughout America will hold special Flag Day ceremonies.

Dr. Bobby Parker, president of University of Mary-Hardin Baylor, presented the SPJST the list of 1983 selectees to receive One-ThousandDollar Scholarships.

All those who were selected have been notified. Also the respective presidents of each winner's lodge have been alerted.

Photos and biographical sketches of all winners will appear in the Vestnik later in the year when the seleetees have enrolled and are attending college. At that time the scholarship checks will be forwarded to each applicable lodge so that they may be presented at-a regularly-scheduled meeting and all the members can meet these very talented young people.

Dr. Parker complimented the SPJST members who applied for a scholarship stating that all applicants were highly qualified which made the decision process difficult and time consuming.

The SPJST is very fortunate to have a selection committee made up of staff members at the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor. The committee is chaired by President.

Parker and due to his cooperation and civic involvement this selection committee has been established at no expense to the SPJST. This completely neutral selection committee also allows for an unbiased selections process of which the Society and the recipients can be proud.

The undergraduate scholarship recipients will be announced some time in August 83.

During September, we will start taking applications for the 1984 school year. Those who are presently receiving one of our scholarships, as well as previously unsuccessful and new applicants will be eligible to apply. The Supreme

San Jacinto College Received SPJST Grant San Jacinto College recently received a $500 Grant for its Czech Language Program. The Grant was presented by District V Director Louis Hanus. SPJST Makes Another Contribution

The Spring Branch Independent School District was the recipient of a $300 contribution to their Czech Language Program. The contribution represents the 1983 SPJST grant approved by the XXIIIrd Convention. The contribution was presented Wednesday, April 27th, 1983 by District V Director Louis Hanus.

full, with a waiting list, and are financially in good shape. He stated that the addition to the Needville Home is currently on hold. The audit from the IRS recognized the homes as charitable organizations, making them tax exempt. The Taylor Rest Home will celebrate its 25th Anniversary with a short program July 31st. As further information to the members, Director Holy said the state has set $29.01 as the cost for one day of care.

Under old business, President Rubesh stated she attended a meeting at the Supreme Lodge for an explanation of Family Day. Under the By-laws, each district is required to have only one business meeting a year. The other meeting could be then used as a family or social day.

She asked the members opinion on holding one in District 6. Director Vanek said we had one before but after about two or three we had no more. Mary Mrnustik said she was instrumental in starting a social meeting several years back but with different officers the idea died out.

Joe Nezval also spoke about the previous social days. President Rubesh said members should discuss it at the home lodges and then let her know the members decision. Ardis Bacak said other lodges could help the host lodge with various items. Anton J. Kellner suggested all members could bring something for the lunch. A motion was then made by Anton J. Kellner that we hold a Family Day in the fall with each family bringing something for lunch. Ardis Bacak seconded.

James Kulcak asked for more looking into the matter, with a committee studying a Family Day for District 6. Several voiced an opinion on the committee. Anton J. Kellner then changed his motion to having a Family Day in the fall, with Linda Rubesh as coordinator and getting input from the home lodges

by July 31st. Ardis Bacak again seconded. The vote showed 29 for the motion, 4, against and 22 abstaining. It was decided that if 6 out of the 11 lodges present approve the family day, District 6 would have one in the fall of 1983.

Leona Macha gave the slate of officers from the nominating committee as follows: President Linda Rubesh, 1st Vice President Frank Zabransky, 2nd Vice Olsovsky, Albert President Secretary Elaine Berkovsky, Treasurer Anton Kellner Jr., Youth Counselor Janet Marek, and Flag Bearer Linda Kulcak. Janet Marek said the office of Flag Bearer was rotated around the youth clubs each year and this year was Victoria's turn. Jason Motal from Victoria then replaced Linda Kulcak on the nominating committee's slate.

Nominations were also asked from the floor. Joe Nezval nominated Ardis Bacak for 2nd Vice President.

Mrs. Bacak said she would accept the nominati )n. The election was held and the nominating committee's slate was accepted with the exception of 2nd Vice President where Ardis Bacak defeated Albert Olsovsky by the vote of 30 to 16.

Pauline Kalina, member of the auditing committee, said her committee had not met so they had no report.

There was much discussion about the site of our fall meeting. East Bernard, El Maton and Hungerford were asked to host but each said

they did not have enough members to help. James Kulcak said El Campo-Hillje lodge would have served as hosts but with the Family Day format they would not accept.

Ervin Holy suggested we postpone the Family Day. Annie Marie Vahalik made a motion that El Campo-Hillje host the fall meeting, leaving their lodge members the option to choose having a Family Day or not. Joe Nezval seconded.

James Kulcak said they would accept hosting on their own terms.

The motion passed.

Door prizes were drawn and the meeting adjourned.

News From Lodge 39 Bryan Dear Friends and Relatives of Bro. Frank and Sis. Albina Vytopil: I want to share my joy • of still having, here on earth, my parents at ages 85 and 80, who are still living in and maintaining their own home with the help of their children.

Daddy still drives his car to Bryan and buys their groceries and tends to all their business affairs, and, due to mother's problems with her legs, we usually find her in her rocking chair crocheting away on some doll or doilie to give to anyone who may come by for a visit; between her children and dad, we can hardly keep her in supply of thread.

My mother was born in Czechoslovakia December 5, 1902 and her father brought his family to the United States when she was 9 years old. They settled in Ennis, Texas.

My father was born here at Smetana, Texas November 29, 1897; when he was 15 years old, his father took their family to Czechoslovakia with the intention of staying, however, dad became very ill and they returned to Texas after four months, settling in Wheelock, Texas.

Daddy met mother at Ennis while picking cotton for friends. They were married June 25, 1921. This year they will be celebrating their 62nd Anniversary.

To this union there were seven children born, including one set of twins; we lost one precious brother,

Frank, at the age of 18 during World War II. There are also 19 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren.

Our mother and father have been members of SPJST for 69 years.

They worked hard and participated until a few years ago due to health problems. Dad served as secretary and president for many years.

Mother, among other things, was the one who encouraged me to form our first Lodge 39 Youth Club. OK! We did have fun and hard, dirty work doing the clearing of land and building our lodge hall. There were many children stung by insects; our son, Ronny, was stung four times one day by bumblebees.

Of all the members who were helping and active during that time in 1959, three of us have held officers' jobs and continued working at the lodge for all 24 years and we are still at it. They are Alnor Kuder, Rudolph Matejka and Lillie Matejka.

We have many hard workers now, but we three have missed very few meetings or activities all these years.

The cedar tree in front of our hall at the steps is one still living that my parents donated and planted when our hall was built at that time.

We are proud of our Mom and Dad and hope to have them with us for a long time, yet. I am composing an album and history of our family and daddy keeps telling me if I don't hurry, they won't live to read it. If I knew they were hanging in there for this, I'd delay it forever.

Brother Jerry is very ill at this time, so I am asking all of you to please keep him and Mom and Dad in your prayers, and they will know it.

Dear Members and Friends, Our monthly meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 1.

Flagbearers Timothy and his dad, Michael Wilson, led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Since there were several "honors" to be presented at this meeting, President Pechal got right on with them. First the graduates for 1983 were honored. They were presented with a gift from the Youth Club and also a gift from the Lodge. Those present were: Lisa Tepera, David Pechal and Eldon Zavodny all from Rogers High School, Scott Sodek from Academy High School and Gene Skrabanek from Temple High School. Tammy Schiller from Rogers was not present. State Youth Director Jann Wilson gave a very inspiring speech to these graduates.

Congratulations to all of you and may you all succeed in whatever you decide to do in life.

The 50-year pin recipients were also honored at this meeting. They were escorted to the front by Martha Klusacek and Dorothy Pechal and were presented corsages and boutonnieres. Brother Leonard Mikeska from the Supreme Lodge ?,.

Our meeting proceeded with roll call of officers and sales representatives. All chairpersons gave their monthly reports. Martha Klusacek, kitchen chairperson especially thanked everyone for the delicious food brought for our lunch and also all the people who helped her in the kitchen for this occasion. New members accepted into our lodge are: Thomas R. Pope, Donald William Loftin, Richard J. Stevens and Joe Lee Kruse. We welcome all these members. Reported on the sick list are: Ed Reznicek, Mary Chlapek, Faye Belicek and Ruth Kohutek. We wish all of you a speedy recovery. The following visitors were welcomed: Leonard and Dorothy Mikeska, Ann Balusek, Julie Moore, Willie Hegar and Mattie Vitek. Do come, again!

I hope everyone has May 28 and 29 marked on their calendar as this is the date for the Czech Symposium to be held in Temple and Seaton Star Hall. Sunday will be a full day at Seaton Star Hall with activities beginning at 10 a.m. Ladies (and men also) from Lodge 47 are asked to bring sheet cakes or kolache for the noon meal. They should be delivered to the hall before the noon meal and preferably as soon as possible starting at 10 a.m. We hope to see many of our members and friends.

Birthdays celebrated in May are Ann Hejl, Lillie Mikulas, Louis Marek, Ann Koon, Henry Mares and Alfred Klusacek.

Day Observed At Lodge 74, Lovelady Mother's

The regular monthly lodge meeting was held Monday evening, May 9 at 7:30 p.m.

All reports were read and accepted by the assembly.

Our attendance was down a little at our Saturday night social, but the ones who attended enjoyed the fellowship and harmony with all the members and guests.

May 7 was our "Tribute To Mothers," night, sponsored by the youth club. Three mothers were chosen as Mothers of the Year; namely, Evelon Patton, Pat Coley and Marie Wright. The youth club held a cake auction; Bill Frazier was the auctioneer and he did a great job.

Hazel Moore reported sympathy cards were sent to Jessie Millican, Vivian Curry and Tommy McClain; a get-well card went to Elvira McCall.

Kevin Flanagan of Crockett and a member of Lovelady Lodge 74 has been named Crockett High School Salutatorian. Kevin is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Flanagan. He is a manager-trainee at Brookshire Brothers and has worked with nursing homes, is a Sunday School

class secretary and a member of his church choir.

He plans to attend Texas A &M and major in Computer Technology.

All the members of Lodge 74 are proud of Kevin and we wish him the best.

80 Holland To Add More Parking Area

Dear Members and Friends of the SPJST: We met for our May meeting Sunday, May 1st at 1:30 p.m. The meeting was called to order by President D. I. Bohac.

All members present recited the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag and the members were asked to remain standing for a few moments in respect to two of our members, Robert (Bobby) Jones and Mrs. Mary Eckermann, who passed away since our April meeting. May they rest in peace.

The minutes of the April meeting were read by Secretary Glen Latham and were adopted as read.

Correspondence was read from Lodge 187 asking our lodge to send a duchess from Lodge 80 for their May Fete.

Reports were given from the bar, dance, floor, kitchen and bingo departments and the kitchen is doing real good at the bingo games under the management of Frank Pajestka Sr. Our members are grateful to you for a job so well done.

Our parking area was discussed at this meeting. We have additional acreage that we bought some time ago, so, we will have to clean it up and convert it to more parking area because at some of the Saturday night dances there is not enough space to park cars.

The officers of our lodge and I would like to urge more of our members to attend the meetings because it's a good way to spend a Sunday afternoon. The meetings don't last too long and after the meeting we have "Happy Hour" (free drinks), play dominoes or cards; many times, we have a good luncheon. We have a good slate of officers and they will be more than glad to have you attend the meetings and see some new faces; our meetings are held the first Sunday of the month, the next one will be Sunday, June 5 at 2:30 p.m.

The Youth Club of Lodge No. 88 will have a cake sale Thursday night, May 19th.

Sister Bobby Orr, a member of Lodge No. 88, will help the children with ceramics the Thursday of each week during the months of June, July and the 1st week in August.

The three-day annual festival at Rosenberg, Texas opened Friday, May 7,1983. In the past, and now for the 8th year, our songbird Helen Hegwood opened this annual festival with the national song "My Country" accompanied by Naomi Spencer on the piano.

Next day, Saturday, many organizations were represented to participate in the daily program: The Czech Heritage Singers of Galveston, Texas followed by the lively young couples of West, Texas by presenting numerous national Czech dances in colorful costumes, under the direction of Maggie Grmela. The lively performance was very much enjoyed and the handsome sons, Terry and Bubba, of our editor were among this group.

Next, on the program was the Lodge

8/VESTMK—Wednesday, May 18, 1983 88 Choral Club, with 26 singers dressed in Czech costumes, under the direction of Tim Kostom. The Czech Concert Orchestra, also of Lodge 88 accompanied the Choral Singers, under the direction of Rudy Dybala. The audience was very generous with applause rewarding the performers.

I was happy to find Harriette Allison in such a good mood when I called her this morning; just like Harriette, she is always pleasant and a broad smile on her lovely face, even now with her wrist in a cast which she broke about two weeks ago, and lucky it is her left hand and it doesn't make her handicapped; she can do things for herself as usual. She is looking forward to May 22 to see the English play; she wouldn't miss it because it's in her blood, she is very talented and made a wonderful director for the "Hlahol" Dramatic Club; it is a pity she cannot be active as before.

Summer-fun for children creating ceramics will be taught by Bobby Orr. Bobby will teach in place of Mary Schenburn who taught these ceramic classes for the past 14 years during the summer months. Mary loves this very much but had to give it up on account of her health and doctor's orders. Mary often had as . many as 50 pupils in the class and she loved it. Now, Bobby the new ceramic teacher, will teach one day a week during June, July and August from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. For information please call the lodge office: 869-5767. Mary, it was gracious of you to devote so many years to this project, but your health is first and I am sure your students will remember you always. In the meantime, Mary is disposing of all her material.

Sunday, May 22, 1983 the presentation of the English Play "Aunt Abby Answers An Ad" is to be staged at 2 p.m. by the "Hlahol" Dramatic Club. All the participating actors are well-prepared to give the audience a performance of pleasure and hilarious and hearty laughter; you will be assured to enjoy a pleasant Sunday afternoon preceded by a delicious dinner served at our lodge dining room and prepared by Chef John Hilsher. Bring your family and enjoy a lovely Sunday.

Lodge 107 Hosted District VII Meeting April 10, 1983, District VII SPJST held their meeting at the SPJST Hall in Floresville, Texas.

Sister Frances Lindholm received her 50-year membership pin.

Frances is the daughter of Valentine Lichnovsky who was a past president of the Floresville Lodge for many years and was the contractor to build our lodge hall.

Sister Frances said this was the first time in 30 years that she had been back to the lodge hall and that she was really surprised to see all the improvements to the building.

Brother Robt. Jon Hrbacek was not present to receive his pin; we will mail it to him.

June 12th Meeting For Lodge 154, Ft. Worth Dear Members and Friends: Yesterday was a beautiful day for Mother's Day and I hope all of you dear mothers had a wonderful day.

Everyone present enjoyed the delicious dinner preceding the meeting. Our meeting was short and called to order by our vice president, Brother. Don Steinman.

The members stood for a moment of silent tribute for our deceased members; namely, Brother James F. (Jimmie) Burnette, Joe Musil and Sister Flora Jane (Korteff) Ryder.

May they rest in peace and our heartfelt sympathy to their families.

All reports were approved.

Guests were Chick and Nadine Sales, Jerry Eaton, Debra Kates, Sandy Frizzell, Glenn Douglass and Jewel Clark. It was nice to have Sister Mary Grubis in our midst and she promises to be back.

New members accepted are Kira Kenea Christopher, Rae Kellum, Reed Erwin Kellum, Roni Elaine Kellum and Meaghan. Elizabeth Jones.

Congratulations to our young member Josh Milan who placed 5th all around in a gymnastic meet with Sokol, Trinity and Bell High School; several Sokol members placed. We are proud of all of our youngsters.

Brother Joe and Sister Agnes Merlick arrived home safely after a 2-week visit with their daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Arno Mueller and family in Miami, Florida. They reported a wonderful time and had great weather.

Our honeymooners Glenn and Marilyn Douglass also arrived home safely after a week in the Virgin Islands; they were in a flood for 2 days, but made up for it the rest of the week, it was quite an experience.

The meeting adjourned to a social and helping our young member Stephanie Mason celebrate her 3rd birthday, with a lot of excitement.

Lodge 84 Dallas Softball Team Report

Dear Brothers and Sisters: In my last report, I promised to give you the results of our games from the Denton Tournament played during the April 15th and 16th weekend.

Friday night, April 15, we played at 10 p.m. against Fort Worth MISG and we lost by a score of 11 to 2 because we really played lousy; errors were plentiful and other goofups contributed to the loss.

Getting hits for our team were Danny Yates with a double, Jerry Zabojnik, Don Jarma, Tom Stites and Tim Hays, each had singles.

The second game was played Saturday at 1 p.m. against Campbell Insurance from Dallas and we won by a score of 5 to 1. Jim Dedman pitched the first 5 and 2/3 innings and Lionel Schulz was the fireman coming in with 2 outs and bases

Wednesday, May 18, 1983 —VESTNIK/9 loaded and he struck out that batter and allowed no hits in the last inning to earn a save. Dedman allowed 3 hits, 6 walks and 4 strikeouts; and Schulz allowed no hits, no walks and 2 strikeouts.

Leading hitters included Paul Barton with 2 singles, Tim Hays, a triple and a walk, Jerry Zabojnik, Randy Christian, Danny Yates, Don Lennox and Kerry Good, all had singles, Mark Vrana had a sacrifice and Don Jarma, a base-on-balls.

After the game a picnic lunch of fried chicken and other good trimmings were enjoyed by all, and special thanks to Ida Schulz and Lillie Jarma for frying 7 chickens and also thanks to others who brought sweets and other goodies.

By winning we played at 4 p.m. against the Dallas Metros and we won by a score of 3 to 0. The winning pitcher was Lionel Schulz who was unbeatable allowing 3 hits, 1 walk, 3 strikeouts and no runs.

Hitters were Jerry Zabojnik with a double and a triple, Don Lennox and Danny Yates had sacrifice flies, Randy Christian and Don Jarma, each had a base-on-balls. It was a very good game and our defense was superb.

Game No. 4 was played Saturday night at 7 p.m. against McGregor of Wichita Falls and we lost by a score of 6 to 1, even though it was a much closer game than the score indicated. Lionel Schulz was the losing pitcher allowing 7 hits, no walks and 4 strikeouts.

Hitters included Don Palm with 2 singles, and Jerry Zabojnik, Randy Christian and Paul Bartos, all had single safeties; thus we were eliminated and we went home.

Our League Game No. 3 played Tuesday night, April 19, was against Texas Ice Machine and we won by a score of 10 to 0. Winning pitcher was Lionel Schulz who hurled the first two innings allowing no hits, no walks and 4 strikeouts; and Jim Dedman hurled the last 2 innings allowing no hits, 3 walks and one strikeout.

Leading hitters were Don Lennox with a double and a single, Randy Christian with a homerun and a walk, Don Jarma with 2 singles and a walk, Darrell Clements with a double, Kerry Good, Don Palm, Tom Stites with singles and Danny Yates with a walk and a sacrifice hit.

Our next game was played April 26 against Campbell's Insurance; we won the game and results will be included in the next report.

Our annual Softball Benefit Dance held Saturday night, April 30th at Lodge 84 was a social as well as a financial success. Our deepest thanks to the people who attended our dance and who were so generous with their help in supporting the tickets and who ate so much food in the kitchen. We were honored by many ex-ballplayers and their wives at the dance, it was so good to see you all and we know you enjoyed yourselves, visiting with . one another, and rewinning all those ballgames. I just wish Bill Gaiser could have been there, he had other commitments and we missed you very much, Bill, and the others who couldn't attend. There will be other times, at least next year for sure.

Our thanks to the mother lodge for the use of the hall premises, to all the fine brothers and sisters who donated gifts and prizes, to the

players who donated many prizes, to the players' wives who brought cakes, cookies, pies plus other goodies for the kitchen, to all the wives who worked so hard in the kitchen, to the players who worked at the door, to the players and wives who helped decorate the hall for the dance, and to the Czech Harvesters Orchestra for providing such wonderful and enjoyable music for the dancers.

Our deepest thanks to Betty and Paul Bartos for having our tickets printed; you all are great and also thanks to others who helped out on this project. Our appreciation is also extended to Don Lennox and Don Jarma for the two Oh gallons) that you donated for your special bar ticket sale which, again, was a big success.

Thanks also to the editor and his wife for the nice editorial honoring the team on its 30th Anniversary; we know it helped and made us all feel good after all these years, it's still fun since it was started as a fraternal endeavor and still continues to survive.

Special Meeting Of Czech Ex-Students Association of Texas (CESAT) Various activities and programs discussed and proposed at the 1983 annual meeting in Taylor last month were reviewed and acted upon at a special meeting of the Czech ExStudents Association of Texas (CESAT) held Saturday, May 7, 1983 at the Heights Public Library in Houston.

After some deliberation it was agreed that the association would pursue the project to develop funding for a matching endowment for the support of Czech studies at the University of Texas. The committee appointed to administer this project will be chaired by Dr. S. Jakobson, professor emeritus, University of Texas.

It was agreed that CESAT would maintain a supply of instruction books for English-speaking students learning the Czech language and also books for new Czech immigrants studying the English language. In this regard it was also agreed that CESAT would act as an information center for new Czech immigrants desiring to learn the English language. Dr. Imrich Immer was appointed chairman of the committee for this activity.

Mrs. Lillian Pivonka reported on the variety of Czech films which are

available from a national film distributor free of charge, except cost of mailing and return. A Cedok film showing the therapeutic programs in the health spas (Karlovy Vary, Frantiskove Lazne and Marianske Lazne) of Czechoslovakia was shown at the end of the meeting.

I.•••.■■•=t From the Youth Leaders LODGE 39 BRYAN YOUTH PREPARE FOR YAD Dear Readers: The youth club of Lodge 39, Bryan held their regular monthly meeting Sunday afternoon, May 8th.

The following officers were elected for the new youth year beginning June 1st: President-Diane Luza, Vice President-Shannon Wilson, Secretary-Meredith Childs, Treasurer-Adam Macik.

I would like to extend a word of thanks to all outgoing officers for doing their jobs so well this past year.

Our club decided to purchase a flag and donate it to the Mother Lodge for Memorial Day. We will dedicate the flag at the next adult meeting.

Friday, May 20 was the date set for our next YAD rehearsal and homemade ice-cream social. We will rehearse both groups and individual talents; this will be held at our lodge home at 7 p.m. All members are reminded to turn in their YAD and camp forms at this event; also, remember to bring your school pictures for the scrapbook.

Door prizes were won by. Grant Faust and Meredith Childs. After the meeting, we enjoyed a potluck supper prepared by the adult lodge and then practiced our group talents for YAD. Since it was Mother's Day our craft was making Mother's Day cards to present to our mothers.

April 24th five of our youth attended the District I meeting in New Tabor. We enjoyed all the youth club programs presented and seeing old friends again. Thanks to New Tabor for not only hosting the meeting, but also for all the delicious food treats they prepared.

Our next meeting will be held Sunday afternoon, June 5 at 2:30 p.m. This will be the first meeting of the new youth year. We will install our new officers, set dates for our YAD rehearsals, and discuss socials for the summer. We have some

important ground to cover, so please try to attend!

UNCORRECTED MINUTES OF DISTRICT III YC MEETING The District III Youth Club meeting was held April 10, 1983 in Fort Worth at Lodge 154. The meeting was called to order by Jody Steinman.

State Royalty will be in Elgin at Lodge 18 for September 17th.

Our youth club also donated $50 to the Scholarship Fund in memory of Therese Dobecka who had been serving as president of our District III Youth Club.

We received correspondence from the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I in Taylor; a thank you note was read for our youth club's money donation.

During our meeting we also elected new officers for 1983-84.

Our youth club members, who attended the meeting, were Jean, Vicki and Marcy Dorotik, Michelle Srubar, Lenice Kaspar and Stephanie Roye. Adult members were Youth Leader Mrs. Jerome Dorotik, Mrs. Dorothy Srubar, Mrs. Anita Roye, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Duckett, Mary Mrnustik and Mrs. J. W. Krutilek.

At the meeting, Michelle Srubar and Stephanie Roye did dances, Vicki and Jean Dorotik did a skit, and all of the members sang songs.

TAITON YC ENTERTAINS AT DISTRICT VI MEETING Dear Vestnik Readers, Six members from Lodge No. 30 Youth Club attended the District VI spring meeting Sunday, April 24, 1983. Those six members who attended were Vicki, Jean and Marcy Dorotik, Michelle Srubar, Stephanie Roye and Lenice Kaspar.

We had a ticket sale with many nice, useful prizes, to raise money for our youth club.

We also performed in a program for the adults. In the program Stephanie Roye did a tap dance.

Michelle Srubar followed Stephanie's dance with her own tap dance number. The Vicki and Jean Dorotik entertained everyone with a skit.

Our concluding performance included all of the members singing "Put On Your Old, Grey Bonnet," and "The Eyes of Texas."

Tentative plans were discussed about attending Sandy Lake Amusement Park during June. A trip to Six Flags will be enjoyed towards the end of the summer.

Each member was assigned hours to work at our ticket sales during the Polka Festival weekend. Congratulations to those who won our great prizes! Once again a special "thank you" to all the kind people who donated prizes.

The two girls sang a beautiful song called "Pass It On." Next, the New Tabor Youth Club presented a mixed-up "Wedding" where everyone dressed up and the audience really loved it.

The business meeting was then continued and, during the discussion, it was proposed that all the kids, who were there, receive $2 and those who participated received

$3 more; hopefully this will be an incentive for all the SPJST Youth Clubs to participate in District I meetings.

We, the Resolution Committee, of Texaska Orlice Lodge No. 13, Dime Box, on behalf of the entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister MARGARET TYDLACKA, who died Monday, March 28, 1983 at 9:50 p.m. in the Scott and White Hospital in Temple.

She was born July 12, 1902, in Lee County, the daughter of the late Joseph and Anna (Kolar) Koudelka.

She had lived in the Dime Box area all of her life. August 8, 1922, she was married to John Tydlacka in the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dime Box. She enjoyed living on the farm, caring for her flowers and her music.

Sister Tydlacka was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Ladies' Altar Society; also, a member of the Dime Box SPJST Lodge No. 13.

Survivors include her husband, John Tydlacka of Dime Box; one son, Arnold Tydlacka of Dime Box; one daughter, Mrs. Emil (Hettie) Mikulec of the Edge Community, Bryan; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; and one brother, Charlie Koudelka of Caldwell.

Preceding her in death were her parents, three brothers and three sisters.

Funeral Mass for Sister Tydlacka, age 80, was held at 10 a.m.

Thursday, March 31 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Rev. Isidore Rozycki officiating.

Interment was in the St. Joseph Catholic Church Cemetery in Dime Box. Pallbearers were Lonnie Mikulec, Patrick Tydlacka, David Sherill, Pete Sukup, George Koudelka and Joe Koudelka.

DOUGLASS-MILAN Marilyn Mae Milan and Glenn Arthur Douglass were married at 5 p.m. on April 16 at Ridglea Baptist Church in Fort Worth. Brother Omar Ritchie officiated at the wedding.

The bride is the daughter of Joe and Carrie Milan of Fort Worth and the groom is the son of Horace and Faye Douglass of Abilene.

Matron of honor was Carolyn Ann Cleveland of Fort Worth and best man was Dale Douglass of Fort Rucker, Ala. Bridesmaids were Nancy Fields of Dallas; Rebecca Allen of Arlington; Franci Whitehead of Dallas; Lisa Burns of Dallas; Billie Jo Mason of Fort Worth and Carrie Ann Cleveland of Fort Worth.

The bride wore a formal, designer gown fashioned with white organza over taffeta. The gown featured a high neckline and straight sleeves with a sheer yoke and a sweetheart style fitted bodice. The bodice and sleeves were covered with French alencon lace, pearls and sequins.

The A-line skirt was heavily appliqued with matching alencon lace and the chapel length train flowed from deep gathers at the waistline. A scattered applique pattern and solid lace border adorned the train.

She also wore a small tiera headpiece, a three-quarter veil of white illusion edged in alencon lace and a puff of illusion at the back. She carried a cascading bouquet of three giant orchids with white roses and stephanotis.

The bride attended Castle High School and attended the University of Texas at Arlington. She is currently employed as a district sales manager at Electronic Data Systems. The groom attended Abilene High School and is presently employed as general manager at Fanous Inc. The couple plans to live in Plano.
