You are richer today than you were yesterday . . . if you have laughed often, give something, forgiven even more, made a new friend today, or made stepping-stones of stumbling blocks; if you have thought more in terms of "thyself" than of "myself," or if you have managed to be cheerful even if you were weary: You are richer tonight than you were this morning. . . if you have taken time to trace the handiwork of your fellowman in the common-place things of life, of if you have learned to count out things that really do not count, or if you have been a little blinder to the faults of a friend or foe.

You are richer if a little child has smiled at you, and a stray dog has licked your hand, or if you have looked for the best in others, and have given others the hest in you!

The Excerpts of the January SL Quarterly meeting and a special SL meeting are in this issue beginning on page 3. You are advised and urged to read them attentively; they are printed for our membership's information. *** While these lines are being written, Mother Nature has already made her appearance of the spring season through the Central Texas area, however, winter has also returned.

The district spring meetings are almost at our door steps, and several districts have announced their place and date in the Bulletin Board in order for you to make plans to attend.

District V begins this year with its meeting March 14 at Stefanik Lodge No. 142 in Houston, serving as host. The district's officers and members have prepared a program, that you will surely enjoy, featuring the Lodge No. 88 Czech Concert Orchestra and Choral Group.

In all spring meetings there are officers elected and very important reports by the district officers and rest home directors are given. These persons take their duties seriously and advise their respective membership on the affairs of the Society.

Whenever there is a small attendance at these meetings, it creates a disappointment to the involved individuals; also, at these meetings, you will hear the district director's report on the SPJST's official business transacted since the last district meeting, therefore, each member is encouraged to attend. ** Sunday, March 21 is another important date for members in three districts.

District II will hold its spring meeting at Lodge No. 18 in Elgin, which will be the host. Their district officers and host lodge are planning an enjoyable meeting, dinner and dance for their members.

Pokrok Lodge No. 84 at Dallas will celebrate its 72nd anniversary; their officers, along with its committees, are also working hard and anticipating a large turnout, with a meal and program prepared.

Their lodge member, Brother Sid Pokladnik, who serves as District III Director in the SPJST, will be president of the Texas Fraternal Congress in 1983; Brother Pokladnik is the first SPJST member (if my memory serves me correctly) to serve in this high office in the TFC. He is to be commended for his dedication and determination to continue representing our Society so well in different sections at the TFC. Congratulations to Brother Sid! San Antonio Lodge No. 133 in District VII has announced its 65th anniversary some time ago, which will take place at the PolishAmerican Center. The members also have arranged and prepared a nice meal, a history of its lodge, and live entertainment.

We hope their hard work will be well-rewarded because they are a group of energetic members who are not afraid of hard work or large undertakings; as you know, these members of Lodge No. 133 have hosted the SPJST Conventions twice: once in 1960 when the first "Miss SPJST" was selected; and again, in 1980 which was the largest convention ever hosted in the SPJST by any lodge. We commend them, likewise, for their dedication and wish them a successful turnout.

Best of luck in the future! *** During these days bill collectors are busier than ever, trying to reclaim more than 6.5 billion dollars per year in overdue accounts. How much debt is too much? There may be a problem if more than 20 percent of net income is needed to pay for credit purchases, payment must be delayed for less urgent bills or new loans are taken out to pay off old ones. Then what? We suggest that you make a list of your bills. Reduce your living costs to absolute necessities. Discuss problems with creditors or collectors, agree on a payment plan and follow it. *** If you drink, not only should you not drive, you should also be careful about walking, according to a study by the University of Michigan's Highway Safety Research Institute.

Using a 5-year nationwide data base of traffic deaths, it found that nearly a quarter of the pedestrians killed had been drinking. Many of these deaths could have been avoided.

Tipsy pedestrians should recognize that their judgment and motor skills are impaired, avoid taking risks and look twice before crossing an intersection or darting between parked cars. The best practice would be Get a ride home with a sober driver.

Did you know that heating bills can be boosted by one third to one half by air leaks around doors, windows and pipes and wires coming in and out of the house? To help you plug those leaks, the Department of Energy has published a new booklet, "Find and Fix the Leaks," which sells for only $2.50. If you are interested about the booklet, write to the Consumer Information Center, Dept. 166K, Pueblo, Colorado 81009. ***

From the President's Office Officers' Workshops Let Us Know You're Coming!

To All Those Concerned: So that we might have a better idea on how many plan to attend for the caterer preparing the noon meal on Saturday, we ask that each person planning to attend complete the form that appears top right and send it back to us as soon as possible. Please, no phone calls!

Other details on this workshop have appeared in a number of Vestniks preceding this one. If you do not tell us you are coming and we arrange for a certain amount of food and then you attend, you may not get fed. ***

WORKSHOPS—OVERNIGHT LODGING Regarding the workshops, if the response continues as good as it has been of late, we expect a nearcapacity attendance. Consequently, we will not be able to accommodate visitors (spouses and others) in the training sessions themselves, but they would be welcome to tour the museum and do whatever else they would like during the workshops.

We have to do this since the sessions are planned primarily for the officers of the lodges. We would appreciate, however, notification as to how many persons are coming, including visitors, so that we might have an accurate count for the noon meal on Saturday.

Overnight lodging on Friday night was and is intended primarily for those coming "from a considerable distance", as has been stated in the letter and notice that has appeared several times in the Vestnik.

Without specifying the number of miles involved, we certainly would not consider it reasonable or fair to reimburse someone for overnight lodging who lives within an hour or two's driving distance from Temple, perhaps even three. All of us, at one time or other, have to get up a little earlier to get where we are supposed to be by a given time. We ask that you not request reimbursement in such circumstances. If you live within an hour or two's driving distance from Temple and you wish to stay overnight, we ask that you do so at your own expense.

EXC'ERPTS FROM THE MINUTES OF THE FIRST REGULAR QUAR TERLY MEETING OF THE SUPREME LODGE SPJST HELD JANUARY 11-14, 1982 AT THE HOME OFFICE IN TEMPLE, TEXAS.

The meeting was called to order at 4 p.m. with all Supreme Lodge Members present: Nick A. Morris, Bernard M. Gebala, Leonard D. Mikeska, Jerry Mikulas, Jr., Sidney Kacir, Ben Trcalek —I, Henry E. Vitek —II, Cyrill Pokladnik — III, Stanley Broz —IV, Louis Hanus—V, Matt S. Vanek — VI, Thelma Hrncir —VII. EMPLOYEES' SALARIES — Because of the fact that employees' salaries were due for payment, the directors postponed the remainder of their audit and the Supreme Lodge met to consider the officers' recommendations for employees' salary adjustments.

After due deliberation, a motion was adopted that the proposed salaries be approved. The motion was seconded and it carried.

Recess was taken at 4:30 p.m. so that the directors could complete their audit. The Supreme Lodge reconvened at 11:30 a.m. on January 12, 1982.

During previous Supreme Lodge meetings, precedural changes were made to streamline the Supreme Lodge Meetings. President Morris outlined these general procedures for this meeting, stating that he will attempt to more sharply define the business areas. He stated that advance preparation is the key to a successful meeting.

The minutes of the October 13-15, 1981 Supreme Lodge Meeting were considered and accepted as presented.

CORRESPONDENCE

Several letters were acknowledged and read.

REPORTS

The Supreme Lodge officers' reports were acknowledged and filed for record in Exhibits Vol. 4.

CORPORATE PLANNING COMMITTEE (CPC)

Report was heard from the CPC composed of Vice President Gebala, Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska, and Directors Hrncir, Pokladnik and Trcalek. The recommendations of the committee were read by the Secretary of the Committee, Thelma Hrncir, and each of the 8 items presented for action were discussed and approved. The goals, plans and recommendations included the following: 1. Because of the tax advantages of the lodge system, it should be stressed that lodges participate in charitable and civic endeavors and a procedure was recommended to recognize such achievements.

2. Addresses should be secured for each member so that premium refund checks are preaddressed to simplify their delivery by the local lodge.

3. Setting a policy to charge interest , rates on new mortgage loans at a rate of approximately 1% below the Temple area rate and allowing a 1% credit on new lodge building loans which would make it possible to increase the rate of premium refund to members.

4. Arrange for a professional appraisal training school for the Supreme Lodge appraisers.

5. Recommend that because of

8. Discussion on the need for more training and professionalism for our sales representatives and the need for review of our insurance products line.

OLD BUSINESS

YOUTH DEPARTMENT—The camp guidelines in President Morris' report were approved.

The Youth Leaders' Retreat was approved as recommended, including allowance of $15 per day, plus mileage and meals for Assistant DYCs, youth leaders and assistants, plus overnight lodging for those

traveling longer distances. DYCs would be paid the usual allowances.

SPJST HISTORY — President

Morris presented figures for 500 perfect bond or cloth bound copies of the SPJST History. The matter of publishing the history was discussed at length.

Recess for the day was taken at 5:30 p.m. until 9 a.m. on January 13, 1982.

A motion was adopted that a committee be selected to edit the SPJST History. Those chosen were President Morris, Legal Advisor Kacir, Directors Pokladnik and Hanus.

REAL ESTATE LOANS — The list of delinquent loans in SecretaryTreasurer Mikeska's report were considered and his recommendations were approved.

FOURTH QUARTER INVESTMENTS — The investments listed in Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska's report were ratified.

LOAN APPLICATIONS — After due deliberation and recommendation, a loan allocation of $125,000 per district was set. It was decided to accept as security owner-operated farms in addition to owner-residence loans. The interest rate was set at 16 1/2 %.

LODGE BUILDING LOANS A letter was read from a lodge requesting a $55,000 lodge building improvement loan. It was agreed that if an application is submitted, detailed information should be sought on the lodge's proposed operation and that SL Officers be authorized to accept the application for consideration if they find the project feasible.

A letter from a lodge president and building committee chairman was read requesting a $250,000 loan to build a new lodge home on a 5 acre tract. It was agreed that the lodge be notified that the SL will consider their request upon their filing of a loan application form and furnishing additional information and that the SL would hold a special meeting to consider their application at which time they should be present to give us full details of their plan of operation.

COST OF LIVING INCREASE IN MILEAGE — The matter of the annual increase in mileage was considered. It was determined that the increase pursuant to the convention would be 4C and would increase the mileage from 34C to 38C per mile.

There was a consensus of opinion that 38C per mile as provided :ay the convention was excessive and that 35C per mile would be sufficient but because of the convention provision, the mileage was reluctantly set at 38C per mile.

DIRECTORS' AUDIT — Report was made and clarification was asked and given on several expenditures.

It was agreed to get information on purchase of a phone system for consideration in the April meeting.

NEW BUSINESS SPJST CALENDAR — It was decided that the Society would have a calendar for 1983. It was agreed to change the format and obtain samples and information for consideration during the April Supreme Lodge Meeting.

FRATERNAL SECTION -- Authorization was granted to President Morris to attend the 1982 President's Section meeting and the Fraternal and Press and Public Relations Section meetings in Minneapolis on March 14-16 and St. Louis on March 29-30.

SALES INCENTIVES — Vice President Gebala made recommendations for our sales incentive program for 1982.

Up to $10,000 was authorized for sales incentive items and a trip to a dude ranch for top producers.

HOME OFFICE BUILDING — Replacement of the air-conditioning control system was aut, Jrized at a cost of approximately $4100.

PROPERTY FOR EXPANSION — S e cr e tar y -Tr easurer Mikeska reported that property across the street from the Home Office is available. There was a discussion about possible need for the property for future expansion. The property available was considered, after

which a motion was passed that authorization be granted to purchase the three 62 1/2 feet lots on Main Street across the street from the Home Office if the property can be purchased reasonably.

COMMON STOCKS — It was agreed to invest up to $125,000 in good quality common stocks.

TRANSFER OF FUNDS — The transfer of funds as provided in our by-laws was authorized on motion duly passed.

PREMIUM REFUND — Report was made that the CPC had requested a study to determine the maximum possible increase in our premium refund scale. A proposal from Actuary David Huff was discussed.

The following scale was adopted, effective January 1, 1982: 3% of the current certificate year midterminal reserve on permanent plans only, less $.35 per premiumpaying certificate and less $1.60 per paid-up certificate. If the resulting refund is not at least $2.25, then no refund is to be paid.

It was agreed to implement as an alternative to the premium refunds the option to allow paid-up additions as soon as this feature can be incorporated.

FRATERNAL SECTION — Authorization was granted to Vice President Gebala and Director Pokladnik to attend the Fraternal Section and Press and Public Relations meeting.

The next regular Supreme Lodge meeting was set to begin on April 13 at 9 a.m. An appraisers training seminar was tentatively planned to be held Monday, April 12.

Recess for the day was taken at 4:15 p.m. until January 14, 1982 at 11 a.m.

CZECH LANGUAGE ALLOCATIONS COMMITTEE — The committee recommended that a letter be placed in the Vestnik notifying the colleges and universities that they should communicate with the secretarytreasurer concerning the 1982 allocation from the $8,000 annual grant set by the convention. The amount to be disbursed to each qualifying college or university will be decided during the April Supreme Lodge meeting.

There being no further business, President Morris adjourned the meeting at 12 p.m.

FROM MINUTES OF A SPECIAL MEETING OF THE SUPREME LODGE SPJST HELD FEBRUARY 10, 1982 AT THE HOME OFFICE IN TEMPLE, TEXAS.

The meeting was called to order

by Vice President Gebala at 10 a.m. with the following Supreme Lodge Members present: Bernard M. Gebala, Leonard D. Mikeska, Jerry Mikulas, Jr., Sidney Kacir, Ben Trcalek —I, Henry E. Vitek --II, Cyrill Pokladnik —III, Stanley Broz —IV, Louis Hanus — V, Matt S. Vanek — VI, Thelma Hrncir —VII. The purpose of the meeting was to consider the application from SPJST Lodge No. 172 for a lodge

building loan and also other matters needing attention.

LOAN APPLICATION, SPJST LODGE NO. 172 — The lodge had filed a loan application for a loan to construct a lodge building and copies of the application were circulated for study by the Supreme Lodge members. Lodge No. 172 President Dan Berry and a delegation of 5 other lodge officials and members appeared before the board, reviewed their plans for the building and answered questions asked about the project and future operation of Lodge No. 172.

After comprehensive study and deliberation about the project, a motion was adopted that the loan application be accepted for consideration and the requirements were agreed upon.

Recess for lunch was taken at 11:30 a.m.

BANK CERTIFICATES OF DEPOSIT — Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska reviewed procedures in the handling of bank certificates of deposit and discussed changes that would simplify the procedure. After discussion a motion was adopted that (1) Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska be authorized to purchase and renew bank certificates of deposit without the action of the other Supreme Lodge officers and that he would report such purchases in his quarterly report for ratification as in the past; (2) It no longer be required that bank certificates of deposit be stored in the bank safety deposit box.

TEXAS FRATERNAL CONGRESS (TFC) — Director Pokladnik reported that he would be the president of the Texas Fraternal Congress during 1983 and that he would like to have the 1983 TFC Meeting held in Temple, Texas. It was agreed to plan to have the 1983 TFC Meeting in Temple, Texas. Vice President Gebala agreed to obtain information on suitable sites available and their cost.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 2:05 p.m.

Lodge Sets March 14th Meeting

Hallettsville

Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, February 14, 1982 at the Grant Building.

President Frank Zabransky called the meeting to order, it was followed by the Pledge to the United States flag led by Tommy Holy and Gary Chudej.

Resolutions of sympathy were read by Gaye Galetka for our departed members, Joe E. Mikush and Herman Kristek.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes of the January meeting. Correspondence followed.

Co-Youth Leader Gaynelle Chudej and Treasurer Helen Zabransky gave reports.

The Audit Committee report was given by Chairman Charles Holy.

Following other business, premium refund checks were given out and the meeting adjourned.

Games were then enjoyed and lunch was served.

February birthdays honored were Elsie Mascheck and Gaynelle Chudej. Sister Mascheck won the birthday cake.

Hermina Vasek was the winner fo the Valentine candy guessing contest held by the Youth Club.

Door prize winners were: adult — Alvin Mikush; youth — Janelle Chudej.

The next meeting will be held Sunday, March 14 at the Grant Buidling beginning at 2 p.m. Make plans to attend.

Lodge Discusses Future Bookings Hillje

Dear Members and Friends: The regular monthly meeting of Hillje Lodge No. 40, held February 14, 1982, began with President Jerry Polasek calling the meeting to order.

The minutes of the last meeting were read by Secretary Albert Kresta, Sr., and they were approved as read.

Insurance policies and dues were brought up-to-date and all accounts were balanced by Financial Secretary Pete Sablatura and Treasurer Frank Sablatura.

The meeting ended early with a brief discussion on future bookings of the Hillje Hall by Hall Manager Pete Sablatura.

No. 28, East Bernard Schedules Meeting Lodge

Dear Members: The March meeting will be held at its scheduled time, the first Sunday, the 7th, at 2 p.m., in the lodge hall.

The lodge will celebrate its 84th year of continuous activity on March 19th. Since our meetings usually are held on the first Sunday, the remembrance will be early. The agenda will cover reports from the sales representatives' banquet that was held in Victoria, officers' workshop that will be held in Temple and regular business. The meeting, again, will adjourn and reconvene at the coffee pot.

The February meeting, on the 7th, convened with a baker's dozen of slightly frozen brothers and sisters present. All regular reports, given, were accepted as read. The Audit Committee made its report and the lodge is in good shape financially.

The broken window was replaced with the wood panel prior to the meeting by about a week. A motion was made and passed to pay the Audit Committee. It was reported

that Brother A. J. (Tony) Kelner had given a check, to the Board of Trustees, in payment for the old theater seats. The meeting adjourned to the rear. The door prize was won by Sister Annie Foytik.

The "Gathering of the Clan" took place with everyone warming the coffee pot. Everyone must have enjoyed themselves for time went by very quickly. The lodge furnished some of the sandwiches and liquid refreshments and the membership brought the rest. Sisters Ilaverda, Brdecka, Schank, Foytik, Luquette and Nezval brought enough to fill the table. Brother Tony Kelner brought two cakes to honor those who had February birthdays.

Thanks to all for making it a success.

The baker's dozen stayed to help with the clean-up. This again showed the fraternal way by easing the work load on those who had to stay.

Announces March Meeting Dear Members: Our February 14 meeting was called to order by President Henry Breitkreutz.

Pledge of Allegiance was led by our Flagbearer Dawn Pavelka.

President Breitkreutz then asked the members to stand in a moment of silence for our departed Sister Margurite Mach.

Visitors were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wells, Kendra and Angela Pursche and Lillie Matus; we welcome you, come back again.

Minutes of the January meeting were read by Brother Albert Banik, in the absence of Sister Rosemarie Banik.

Thank you notes were read from the Wesley Dulocks and Fred Mach.

Assistant Youth Leader Sister Barbara Pavelka gave the youth report. There will be a cake walk March 6.

"Happy Hour" was sung to Ernest Banik. The birthday cake was brought by Ronald Steinke, it was a Valentine heart cake.

Committee reports were made by: Sister Mary Pavelka-kitchen, Brother Eugene Pavelka-entertainment, Brother Randy Pavelkarefreshments; they also thanked everyone who helped them.

New adult members are Donald and Ronald Steinke, Darrin Banik and Patricia Niekemp. New member is Janie Pavelka, we welcome you!

Mr. and Mrs. Mike McCauley are the proud parents of Codie Wayne born February 10. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Banik are the proud grandparents. Congratulations!

Waco Lodge Makes

Charitable Donations Dear Members: SPJST Lodge No. 66 held its meeting Sunday, February 21st. The meeting was conducted by Vice President Johnnie Gaidusek, in the absence of President Daniel Nors, due to the illness of their grandson who is in Parkland Hospital in Dallas.

The flags were presented by James Yates and Chris Owens. The Pledge of Allegiance and Lodge motto were recited by the members.

Visitors were Fred Brady and a special member, Sister Matilda Hanus, after a long absence; it was great to have her with us. We hope she can be back, again.

In roll call, all officers were present, except President Nors and Youth Leader Barbara Brem who was also in Dallas with Brother and Sister Daniel Nors.

The January minutes were read

In correspondence, Sister Darlene Engelke read letters from March of Dimes, a note from Brother and Sister Ed Mazanec, sending a note and check for $100 from Edward and Mariska Screeney in memory of her parents, Brother and Sister Richard Stransky. We thank Brother and Sister Screeney for the thoughtfulness for this gift. It was discussed what to do with this lovely gift and it was voted to use the $100 toward the purchase of a Microwave oven needed in the kitchen on game nights and by the Entertainment Committee, also.

Sister Bonnie Pruitt read a letter from Brother Leonard Mikeska that the 50-year membership pin had been mailed to Sister Regina Adamcik. Congratulations to Sister Adamcik!

Brother Gaidusek had Sister Engelke read the minutes of the Board of Trustees' meeting held Wednesday night, February 3.

In the Entertainment Committee report, Brother George Shilling gave the financial standings, the 1982 New Year's Eve Dance has been booked with the Country Drifters, and, following the meeting, sandwiches, chips, pickles, desserts and drinks would be served.

In the Youth Club report, Sister Kay Owens, assistant to Sister Brem, also gave the financial report.

The club ha_d gone bowling and plan a Skating Party. The club had a contest today on the Valentine boxes and cards by'youth members.

Brother George Pauling reported the Lodge 66, Linden Hall, and Youth Club books had been audited and all are in good order.

New members accepted in February were: Annette Krueger, Janet Marie Bezdek, Andrew Joseph Oswald, Agnes Clara Veselka, Joe Lee Grams and Jacob James Gerik. Welcome to Lodge No. 66!

Health Committee Report: Sister Polly Gaidusek reported get-well cards had been sent to Brother Arthur Langlotz (who had eye surgery); it was nice to have Brother Langlotz at the meeting and we all hope and pray the surgery will be successful; also a card to Tommy Gaidusek (who was injured in an explosion at his home); he is home and reports are he is doing fine; we all hope he continues to improve.

Brother Truman Moore is in the VA Hospital. Good luck, Brother Moore, we all hope you are doing OK. Sister Emogene Scott was in Ilillcrest Hospital a few days and she is at home, doing fine and we also hope and pray for a successful recovery.

A card was sent to Sister Agnes Mazanec. (It was reported that the grandson of Brother and Sister Nors is critically ill in Parkland Hospital; we all send our prayers for a successful recovery.)

Sympathy cards were sent to Brother and Sister Frank Miller on the loss of her sister, to Brother and Sister Otis Ceska on loss of her sister, to Brother and Sister Charlie Mueller on loss of her aunt, and to Brother and Sister Anton Glatter on loss of his aunt. May all these loved ones rest in peace. Sister Polly also read a thank-you note from the Mueller family for the card that was sent to them.

Baby congratulations were sent to the Roger Wallaces on the arrival of a daughter; the mother is the former Debra Galler, and the proud grandparents are Brother and Sister Weldon Galler. Debra was an active youth club member.

In a discussion at the meeting was that our lodge needs to do more charitable work and that'we should help more individuals who have need for help and assistance. Sister Pruitt said we need to do more for others and not just for organizations.

Sister Engelke made a motion we donate $100 to Pat Galligan who was seriously burned in an attempt to save an elderly lady whose home was on fire; this young man will need a lot of surgery from these burns.

The motion carried. It was also voted we give $100 to Tommy Gaidusek who was injured in an explosion recently. We hope both of these young persons will recover.

We have four lodge officers who will attend the Officers' Workshop at Temple March 4. They are: President Nors, Vice President Gaidusek, Secretary Pruitt and Financial Secretary Engelke.

Vice President Gaidusek asked Brother Emil Harms to come forward; he was presented a lovely plaque for 21 years of service as treasurer and for his loyal duty to this job. Brother Hanus thanked the

lodge for the lovely plaque; he also thanked his wife, Sister Annie, and his co-workers who helped him earn this gift. His former co-workers, over the years, were: Brothers Roman Parma, Bennie Engelke, Frank Parma, Chris Spence, Silas Smith, Leslie Dungan, Ray Moore and George Trefny. He also thanked those who helped when he could not attend, due to illness and deaths. It was great to know they could take over when he needed help. Brother Hanus said he enjoyed the years he worked and for all the cooperation he had during these years.

State Field Manager Brother Silas Smith said that 1981 was a banner year for the SPJST and that 1982 has started out to be another good year. He reported there would be a number of prizes for the sales representatives to work for. It would be worth their time to get out and sell insurance; also several classes will be held and it will be worth your time to attend these meetings because you will learn new techniques in selling and more about the prizes.

Members celebrating birthdays in February are: Sister Lillian Cox, Brothers Bennie Engelke, Ray Orsag and Steven Wayne Warren.

The regular monthly meeting of SPJST Lodge No. 80 was called to order by our president, Brother D. I. Bohac Sunday, February 7 at 2:15 p.m.

Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all the members present.

Roll call of officers showed all present, except Vice President Terry Bertrand who was absent.

President Bohac welcomed all the members to the meeting.

Minutes from the January meeting were read by Recording Secretary and Treasurer Glen Latham; there were no corrections or additions, the minutes were accepted as read.

These new members were admitted to our lodge: Lillian Joyce Spinn, Nathan Ivicic, Courtney Volney, Andrie Todd; Daniel Grossman had additional insurance.

The Auditing Committee met at this meeting to audit the books of the lodge and the building fund books.

The Holland-Bartlett Fire Department Dance, which was held January 30, was a big Access.

Proceeds went to the abovementioned fire departments. The lodge furnished the hall free.

There was no other business and the meeting was adjourned at 3:30 p.m. to meet again on the first Sunday in March at 2 p.m.

Lodge Schedules March Meeting Needville

Dear Members and Friends: Our regular monthly meeting was held February 14. President Charlie Matcek called the meeting to order promptly at 2 p.m. The attendance was small due to inclement weather and quite a bit of illness in the community. President Matcek wished everyone a happy Valentine's Day. Lillie Teykl led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag and all remained standing in silence for a minute as a tribute to our two deceased members, Otto Jeske and Alvin Zemanek. We express our sincere sympathy to these two families.

All the officers answered the roll call.

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes from the previous meeting.

Financial Secretary Aleene Zwahr gave her report. Treasurer's report was given by Willie Mae Kuykendal.

Special Fund Treasurer Gilbert Walzel reported on the activities at the hall and gave a schedule for the coming month. Then he gave a detailed financial report. VVinnifred Susan gave the memorial fund report. All of these reports were accepted as given.

Our annual chili supper held February 9 was a great success. We had ideal "chili-eating" weather so many people came out and supported us in this annual event.

We express our thanks to all the kind ladies who brought the delicious pastries, especially those who were non-members and helped us. If you helped in any way, we want to let you know we did appreciate it! We especially do thank Sister Vlasta Nowotny who so graciously volunteered to bake the usual beautiful "Valentine Cake" and congratulations to Sister Opal Teykl who was the lucky one to win it!

The. Auditing Committee met January 12 to check the books and Brother Herbert Nowotny gave the report. All books were found in order.

A workshop is scheduled to be held in Temple March 6. Our president, vice president, secretary and financial secretary are planning on attending.

Wednesday, March 3, 1982 — VESTNIK/7

Lodge No. 88, Houston The dance held Saturday night, February 20 was with music by Wence Shimek Orchestra which played for a very slim attendance; it was not the orchestra's fault, but annual rodeo time is here and thousands of people, including our members and friends, flocked the streets to watch the riders come to Houston Memorial Park and, at night, at the Astrodome and the good music was somewhat wasted.

The guests, who did venture out after an all-day rain, enjoyed the dance any way. Hosting this dance were: Evelyn Zientek in charge of the dance and her husband, Ed, in the box office; Bob Martinak took care of the guests and his wife, Ruth, greeted the guests at the door.

The Sunday, February 21 sales representatives' banquet was held at Lodge No. 88 and hosted by District V Director Louis Hanus and his lovely wife, Oleta. The dining room had rows of tables covered with white table cloths and vases with flowers in the center; the cocktail bar was in the far corner and the adjoining Red Room, with an attractive table in the center, held a selection of dips to enjoy with the refreshments before a dinner of delicious barbecue prepared by Willie Wehring catering service.

About 60 (including sales representatives and guests) gathered before 12 noon to socialize until 1 p.m.

Brother Hanus delivered the benediction and a delicious buffet meal followed. It was a pleasure to have, in our midst, Brother Bernie Gebala, vice president of the Supreme Lodge, accompanied by his lovely wife, Evelyn. Brother Gebala outlined the procedure and awards to the sales representatives in 1982, which sounded as a very good program and will give the sales representatives a desire and ambition to make good in 1982 for themselves and our Order, the SPJST. In closing, Brother Louis Hanus distributed checks to the sales representatives as an incentive award for 1981; handshakes with goodbyes followed and closed a very pleasant Sunday afternoon.

Sorry to hear of Brother Victor Peter, past president of Lodge No. 172 in Pasadena. Victor was stricken with a heart attack last week and is confined in St. Luke's Hospital here in Houston (Room No. 1823). His spouse, Sister Lillia Mae Peter, was present at the banquet with her son, George T. Shotwell of San Antonio, Texas, who accompanied his mother.

We have no idea how long Victor will have to be in the hospital, but we do wish you a speedy recovery!

We all were happy to see Alrneda Bravenec; she still uses a walking cane but, otherwise, she looked very good; but, of course, the experience she went through, naturally, shook her quite a bit. My, but she sure is a brave girl! Franklin, her husband, also had a little ailment, but is fine now; I am sure he was worried about Aimeda and, no wonder, we all are happy for both getting over this experience.

The weather now is so beautiful and it is hard to resist temptation for anyone to stay inside and look out the window and see all the frozen plants and shrubs and do

nothing about it. Of course, that includes Della Miksch; she is one who has to have everything just so in her yard and you can imagine why! A couple of years ago she won the first prize award in her neighborhood, so, Della and Joe, both were out there for two days already and Wednesday Della got down on the grass to pull some frozen bush and, Oh! all of a sudden she realized she couldn't get up and, in pain, called Joe to help her up. In severe pain he took her to emergency and after x-rays were taken, it was diagnosed as a severe-pulled muscle with terrific pain. She is feeling better but will think twice before going out there, again.

Good News! Brother Milo Karel, our Czech director for 1982 for the Dramatic Club of Lodge No. 88, did some research for a Czech play in our library of Czech play books, (of which we have hundreds). I am sure he found one for a good performance to be presented to our faithful supporters. Last year, for the first time, not one play was given on our stage in 60 years! There were times, in the past, when a play was given on our stage every month in the year. Believe me, that took a lot of sacrifice on the part of each volunteer actor and they did it for the love of the lodge. Let's hope, this year, we will be fortunate to be able and produce something worthwhile and save our reputation to be the only ones and place where a CZECH play may be seen and heard on the stage of Lodge No. 88. More power to anyone who is willing to help.

March 14, the District V meeting will be held at Lodge Stefanik No. 142. The Czech Concert Orchestra under the direction of Rudy Dybala and the Choral Club under the direction of Tim Kostom, Lodge No. 88 will entertain you during the noon hour. After the meeting a "Happy Hour" will follow with a FREE dance and door prizes. This will take place Sunday, March 14, 1982.

Lodge To Observe 70th Anniversary

Lodge No. 107 met Sunday, February 7, 1982 at 4:30 p.m. President Bayer called the meeting to order and led the Pledge of the Flag.

Officers Burleson, Bielefeld and Youth Leader Bayer were absent; they were at the Youth Club Skating Party in San Antonio.

Minutes were read and corrected.

Treasurer's report was given by Phyllis Purchis. President Bayer gave the youth leader's report. A Skating Party was being held at the Sport's Palace in San Antonio. This was to be followed by a wiener roast upon their return.

DYC Maxine Pavliska gave a report on youth activities. The youth, leaders' workshop was changed from March 6 to' Saturday, February 27; a youth leaders' training will be in Temple April 17

and 18. She also stated that campers were eligible only through age 15.

An insurance meeting is to be held at the hall March 8 at 7:30 p.m.

The Auditing Committee gave a favorable report.

Henry Sralla reported replacing the motor on the water pump.

Lodge No. 107 will be celebrating its 70th anniversary in May 1982.

Plans were begun on a celebration for the first Sunday in May which will be May 2nd. All members will be notified by mail and a reply will be requested. There will be no charge to policyholders, however, guests and non-members will be charged for the meal. A meeting, social and a 6 p.m. supper is planned. More details on this later.

Dear Members, Leaders of all Lodges, Editor, Supreme Lodge Officers, and Vestnik Readers: We, from Lodge No. 172, love all of you and we won't forget you brothers and sisters who got together at a most beautiful Gingle Bob's Restaurant in Baytown, Texas, Friday night for the 1981 Entertainment Committee and their leaders. All of us had a ball admiring the beautiful dancers entertaining themselves and the silver ball that kept twirling in the ceiling which was just too much to admire; the colored lights that were reflecting on the parquet floor made your head dizzy and almost made your head turn along with the ball and it almost made everyone's eyes look side ways. The good music from the records and tapes were enjoyed by nineteen of the members: Margie Lee Nelms, Dan Berry, Tinnie Coffman, Esther and John Mikeska, Albert and Tommie Risinger, Joseph and Henrietta Krenek, Monty and Mary Green, Hanns and Sylvia Hugo, Doug and Loraine Wylie, Herbie and Evelyn Kimmons, and Tommy and Helen Wallace. At this hosted dinner four or six of them were not present because of sickness; two of them were on their way back to Los Angeles, California, back for Monday's duty at work. We also missed Brother John and Sister 011ie Brice as well as those sick ones.

Hurry and get well soon because we would like to have you present among us at the lodge activities.

Brothers and Sisters: You see, many of you could have been joining our group of hosts and hostesses on the Entertainment Committee by

having a good time, so don't be shy and join our lodge in Pasadena; the ones working at the door at our activities, always extend a handshake and express their appreciation for your patronage. So come and be our guests and see for yourself what we have for entertainment.

At our Saturday night dance, were a few birthday celebrants at two full tables. They were Mr. Joe Jones and his wife with their two married daughters, Mrs. Brenda Bohm and Pattie Wilson, all of Baytown, along with Brother and Sister Edleman from Lodge No. 172 who helped the group celebrate.

Our Sister Cecilia Klechka is also back at work in our lodge after a round of flu. It was good to see your smiling face among us again at the past Saturday night dance. I'm so sorry that I couldn't dance a fast polka with you, Cecilia; maybe next time!

We were also sorry to hear about our dear and beloved lodge brother, and our past lodge president, Victor Peter; who had a heart attack Thursday and is in St. Luke's Hospital in Houston Medical Center. Let us not forget a prayer for his recovery soon; he was a leader of leaders in so many ways it pertained to. God bless you, Brother Peter, you are not forgotten by none of us at Lodge No. 172 nor are the other brothers and sisters who may be sick no matter where you are residing.

We also learned that Sister Sophie Baker is recuperating very nicely. God bless her, too.

This past Saturday night Eddie and Marie Pozderny had visitors, the Labajs, Eddie's sister and brother-in-law from Corpus Christi.

We also had visitors, Clarence Phillpot and his wife, the reverend from St. Ambrose Church in Crosby, the Hromadka family, and Henry Krolezyck and wife from Deer Park.

Thanks to all of you who came to our dance to enjoy the beautiful music by the well-known City Polka Boys.

Oh, that Onheiser, Mattis, Janak and Brother Okruhlik really can put out wonderful music on their instruments, especially on the accordion and drums. Everybody had a good time. Let's continue by having good times and a lot of fun and let yourself be known and become a lodge family of our organization for you will be glad that you did and do a good deed for yourself and your family in the future by inviting guests to join our Society.

March 10th Meeting Date Set For Galveston Lodge Galveston Lodge No. 173 held its monthly meeting Thursday, February 18 at Brother John Valusek's, 407 Ling at Bayou Vista.

There were eleven members present. It would be nice if we could get more members to attend. Good fellowship is enjoyed by members present.

It was reported that Brother Willie Huepers has been in the hospital recently; he had a finger amputated. The membership is wishing him a speedy recovery and may he be able to go back to work.

Chuck Beacharnp led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We stood in silence for our departed members.

Minutes were read by Mydel Grochoske in the absence of our Secretary Frances Simmank who, with her husband, Edwin, had gone to Columbus, Texas for a family reunion. Our vice president was also absent; he stayed at home to take care of his brand new granddaughter born to his daughter and son-in-law, Shelly and Markus Grigs.

Congratulations!

Youth Leader Brenda Beachamp is getting the youth program off the ground. They have purchased tumbjer pads and will be teaching self-protection. More on this later.

New, members accepted are John Anderson, Cassie Keller, Judy Ann Keller, Wade Douglas Keller, Laura Jenkins, Laurie Lynn Seely, Joseph Hurtik, Jr., and Paul Wayne Hurtik.

Our historian, Milady Hejl, is doing a fine job of compiling the history of our lodge. We can't always see what she is doing but, she is out there doing it; anyway thanks, Milady!

Due to the large attendance at our dances, it was necessary to purchase a hundred more chairs. There also was a discussion on adding on a storage space and paving the parking lot.

A movie projector has been donated to the Burleson Nursing Home in Burleson. Thanks, Joyce Russell, for procuring this projector.

Thanks also to Gordon Cox busily working on the audit and counting up the free work by workers for income tax purposes.

Please note that our next meeting has been changed from the second Sunday of the month to the second Tuesday of the month for the next three months. The next meeting will be held Tuesday, March 9 at 7:30 p.m.

I do not know if I can include this in my letter but I would like to let Mr. Stasa know how much I enjoy reading his column in the Vestnik. I was especially interested in the history of the immigrants around Red Ranger where I grew up. I remember my parents, Paul and Anna Sulak, also attending the convention in 1928 in Temple. I am looking forward to the next Vestnik

SPJST District V Meeting Dear Members: We, District V and. Lodge No. 142 officers hope you are making plans to attend the district meeting Sunday, March 14th, at Stefanik Lodge No. 142, 5508 Nolda, Houston.

The lodge officers and members are working hard to make it a most pleasant day for you. Serving of a delicious barbecued brisket dinner starts at 11:30. The lodge will

appreciate donations of pastry. Once again you will be able to enjoy great entertainment by Lodge No. 88 Czech Concert Orchestra and Choral Club during the noon hours.

No. 183 Schedules C/W Dance Dear Members: Those of you members who chose not to attend the "German Faschingsball"; you really missed a great party. The Germans do this only once a year, the weekend before lent season begins, so they really put on a great show. There were all kinds of costumes: beautiful ones, ugly ones and very unusual ones. The men just missed a chance to dance with a Texas ARMADILLO! You may never get another chance!

There was a house full of people and they kept the bartenders and the kitchen help busy all night. A big thanks to all of them because this is what makes a lodge work. Everyone seemed to have a good time even all of those who were working the bar and kitchen.

Matulas Attend Promotion Party 1st Lt. Emil E. Matula, Jr., has been promoted to the rank of captain in the United States Army Engineers Corp at Fort Knox, Kentucky.

Captain Matula is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Emil E. Matula, Sr., of 303 Gayle Avenue, San Antonio, Texas.

The Promotion Party was . given at the Army residence of Captain and Mrs. Emil E. Matula, Jr. by Captain Matula's wife, Kathleen; in attendance at the party were 26 officers and their wives, who had served with Captain Matula at Fort Knox for the past 31/2 years. Mr. and Mrs. Emil E. Matula, Sr. made a 5-day weekend visit to Fort Knox, Kentucky to visit their son, his wife and grandson, Emil III and Tree Matula, were in attendance at the party.

From the Youth Leaders EL CAMPO YL ANNOUNCES NEXT YC MEETING The El Campo Lodge No. 50 Youth Club met February 15, 1982 at 6 p.m. at the American Legion Ladies' Auxiliary.

The meeting was opened by President Lori Henderson.

Secretary Tammy Dybala read the minutes. Treasurer Melissa Brandt gave the treasury report and collected dues.

Kim Vanek gave a report of the activities for our club to participate in.

ST. PATRICK'S THEME FOR TAITON LODGE NO. 30 YC MEETING Dear Readers, We will have our March SPJST Youth Club meeting Sunday, March 7 at the Taiton Community Center, at 2:30 p.m. and this will be a very important meeting. All members bring your December, January and February points to our March meeting.

At our last meeting, we were all asked to bring at least 100 recycleable cans for our money-making project.

Our youth club did very well selling sandwiches and kolache at the Vrazel's Dance Sunday, February 21st.

We had our Skating Party Saturday, February 13 at the Silver Wings Skating Rink. Our Lodge No. 30 members really had a good turnout and everyone really enjoyed themselves, so did Lodge No. 50, El Campo and Lodge No. 40, Hillje.

The theme for our March contest will be on St. Patrick's, we will also bring our homemade bunnies to be delivered later to our local rest homes and bring some cheer to our senior citizens.

I am sorry that I had to miss delivering the Valentines we had made because I had toe surgery but am fine now.

At this meeting we made and decorated Valentines. Mrs. James

Bacak, our youth leader, and her husband, James, awarded Valentine prizes to all the youngsters for their accomplishments. We all had a good time decorating our Valentines. We also exchanged Valentines and candy goodies with each other.

Mrs. Laverne Bacak brought a film projector and showed a film on "Czech Heritage."

We worked on Valentines for the Czech Catholic Home and watched a

movie called, "Texane ceskeho puvodu," which was a good movie.

We talked about the crafts we need to make and meetings we must attend; looks like I will be very busy.

Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge No. 40 Hilije held its regular monthly meeting February 17, 1982.

The youth members traded Valentines and Valentine goodies with each other. The youngsters also drew and decorated their own Valentines and Mrs. Bacak and her husband, James, gave prizes to the youth for their Valentines.

Mrs. Bacak, our youth leader, will take our Valentines to the Hillje Nursing Home.

Mrs. Crowell furnished cookies and punch for our refreshments.

Survivors include his parents, Leeland and Shirley Schramm; grandmothers, Mrs. Milda Wagner of Brenham and Mrs. Olivia Schramm of Nelsonville; sister, Sandra Faye Schramm; brother, Calvin Gene Schramm, both of Nelsonville; and numerous other relatives.

Burial was in the Holy Cross Cemetery.

Rosary was recited Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Condra Funeral Home in Granger.

Brother Mikulencak joined the SPJST in 1910 at the age of 18 in SPJST Lodge Hvezda Jihu in Taiton, Texas.

He was a former director of the Granger National Bank, serving for 34 years. He also served on Granger School Board for 20 years, and was a director of Nasinec Publishing Co. for over 30 years. .He owned and operated Mikulencak Variety and Dry Goods Store for 33 years before his retirement.

Brother Mikulencak was a member of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, KJT and the SPJST. Survivors inchide his wife, Mrs. Frances Mikuleiicak of Granger; three sons, Frank J. Mikulencak, Jr., and Bernard Mikulencak, both of Granger and Albert Mikulencak of Elgin; seven grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Adamek was born in Bell County September 8, 1900. She resided in the Red Ranger community until 1941 when she moved to the Dallas area. Sister Adamek was residing in Garland, Texas at the time of her death.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Mable Jackson of Garland, and Mrs. Dorothy Hudson of Mesquite; a brother, Frank Vitek of Temple; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Anton Adamek in September 1957, four sisters and one brother.

Funeral services were held February 17, at the Troy Suggs Funeral Home in Dallas with Rev. Wayne Wood officiating. Interment was in Laurel Land Cemetery in Oak Cliff.

The daughter of Ludwig and Mary (Zacek) Kahanek, she was born 2 April 1898 at Velehrad. She married Edward J. Hajek 17 October 1916 at St. John's Catholic Church in St. John. They settled in Schulenburg.

A lifelong resident of this area, she was a member of the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, St. Rose Altar Society, and the SPJST Lodge No. 67 of Schulenburg.

Although she has no immediate survivors, she leaves a host of friends and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

The United States has two choices: to continue producing radioactive waste and let future generations worry about its disposal; or develop a safe system of disposing of it for present and future generations.

In a 25-minute filmed report, "Nuclear Waste Isolation: A Progress Report", the U.S. Department of Energy explains how isolation of nuclear waste in an underground repository will provide safety from the environment without the "caretaking" of the material by future generations. Such a repository would be located 2,500 feet beneath the earth's surface combining the use of natural rock formations and the containment of the nuclear waste within man-made barriers. Musim se zde zminit jak ten neuprosny osud zas zasahl do tivota maleho cleveete z blizkeho Seagoville, Tx. Ona ta divEina 8. 'eta byla postitend zvlastnim neduhem jater, churavela a tez krvacela vnitrne a jeji jatra vfibec §patne pracovaly. Vzorem sokolstva byla tecka "Kalokagathia" neboli anticky ideal Oloveka telesne vyspeleho, du§evne u§lechtileho a narodne uveclorneleho.

Stejne jako Helada (anticke Recko) prosttednictvim olympijskych her vychovavala zdatne bojovniky za svou svobodu tak organizace Sokol usilovala telovychovou cvieeni tela i mysli v duchu narodnim a ku

prospechu eeskeho naroda. Nutnost telovychovy vsak jiz davno pfed vznikem Sokola zduraztioval Jan Amos Komensky ve sve "pansoficke" §kole poukazem, ze mlaidet se nejlepe pfipravi pro tivot zdokonalovanim se v "pohybovanf tela i ducha." Tu v pojednani o "hrach" ueitel narodu Jan Amos Komensky doporueoval pro chlapce i deveata nejruznejsi druhy sportu a oceftoval jak telesny tak i mravnf vyznam teto vychovy. Pozdejsi vznik Sokola, v minulem stoleti byl jednak odezvou a brati proti nemeckym turnerskym spolkum zaloten3r'm tez v Praze, jednak ptimym vysledkem narodne obrozeneckeho procesu nekolika buditelskych generaci k formulaci novodobeho eeskeho naroda. V neposledni fade k vzniku Sokola ptispely tez uddlosti v Praze v eervnu 1848, kdy Pratane s pomoci venkova se poprve po dlouhych staletfch bojovne srazili s rakouskou statni mod. V bojich na barikadach proti vojsku vedenym generalem Windisch — gratzem byl tet §estadvacetilety Jindtich Fugner, velitel setniny me ganske gardy, a elen studentske legie §estnactilety Miroslav Tyr§. Ac povstani bylo potladeno tak Tyrs si z neho odnesl cennou zku§enost, kterou, vyjadtil pozdeji takto: "Nitadrie sebevet§i nad§eni lidu narychlo sebraneho nic rozhodneho potiditi nemilte proti naletite odchovanemu a vycvieenernu, eetnemu a dobte vedenemu vojsku." Tyr§ a Fugner navazovali tedy vlastnimi zku§enostmi z pratskeho povstani v roce 1848 na telovychovu jet se nezadrtitelne stala zaletitosti vlasteneckou a nerozlueitelnou soueasti narodniho obrozeni. Fugner byl v§estranny sportovec, Tyr§ slab§iho zdravi se venoval terner vyluene gymnastice, nejdtive jako cvieenec, pozdeji jako cvieitel v soukrornych telocvienych fistavech Smidta a Malypetra. Jindt. Fugner byl teditelem pratske poboeky pojigovny Nuova z Terstu a Tyr byl dlouholetym vychovatelem v rodine tovarnika Bartelmuse v Novem Jachymove na Berounsku jitne od Prahy. Belem tohoto zamestriani Tyr§ studoval filosofii a kdyt dosahl ye svych 38 letech v roce 1860 doktoratu filosofie tak se vratil natrvalo do Prahy. AC chtel byt vysoko§kolskym profesorem filosofie, estetiky a dejin v3r*tvarneho umeni, (cot se mu podatilo at na sklonku jeho tivota), tak telovychove naddle distal veren a venoval ji velkou pozornost.

Stale vzrftstajici rozkvet narodniho uvedomeni ye stare vlasti v zaeatku Sedesatych let minuleho stoleti vytvoril velmi ptiznive podminky k vzniku Ceske telocviene organizace.

Na prahu techto vyznamych §edesaitych let vzniklo rychle za sebou nekolik vlasteneckych spolkft: v roce 1861 peveckY spolek Hlahol, ptigi rok spisovatelsky Svatobor a v roce 1863 Umelecka, beseda. Na Slovensku (v tehdej§ich Hornich Uhrach) v temtze roce vznikla Matica slovenska.

V Nemecku se roz§itily turnerske (telocviene) spolky tak, ze v roce 1860 konaly svftj sjezd v Koburku a rok pote v Berline. Cvieitele, cvieenci a elenstvo Pratskych soukromych telocvienych tistavii se proto rozhodli vytvotit podobny spolek pro Cechy i Nernee. Jelikot pratskynn nerneck3r.m turnerftm venoval bankovni teditel baron von Seutter velkou sumu pellet s podminkou, ze novy spolek bude ryze nernecky tak Tyr§, bratti

Gregrove a Fugner zalotili samostatnou ceskou organizaci nazvanou Telocviena jednota pratska. Stanovy -Leto jednoty byly fitedne schvaleny 27 ledna, 1862 a prvnf valna hrornada se konala 16 -ftnora stejneho roku.

Starostou byl zvolen Jindtich Fugner a ndeelnikem 13 kvetna se stal dr.

Miroslav Tyr§. Z poslednich nekolika vet je jasnYm, ze zaklady prvnf Ceske teloeviene organizase nebyly pouze telovychovne. K zrodu tohotu spolku ptispel ptedev§im politicky antagonismus zavineny Nemci, ktery potvrdil nazory dr. Mir. Tyre a ostatnich zakladateld, ze pestovani telocviku je nutne v duchu narodnim, spjato s eeskou kulturou a k prospechu eeskeho naroda. Ne tedy pouze telocvik k zdokonalovani tela a zdravi jednotlivcii, ale i kolektivnf hlub§i cif zvany osveta elenstva v duchu narodnim jak tehdej§i generate tak i v§ech pfi§fich pokoleni. Ac nazev nove telovychovne organizace byl Telocivena, jednota pratska tak jiz pfed ustavujici schftzi 16 ftnora, 1862 navrhl prof. Emanuel Tonner jmeno Sokol, noviny 6as psaly o tomto vznikajicim spolku jako o Sokole a elenstvo teto jednoty se hned od poeatku nazyvalo sokoly dle vzoru jihoslovanskych bojovnikil za svobodu. Vynikajici aesky mall/. Josef Manes namaloval obraz ptaka sokola s rozpjatymi ktidly a naipisem "Sokol" na prvni sokolskY prapor; na druhe strane praporu bylo heslo: "Tutme se!" Jmeno "Sokol" bylo oficialne ptijato na valne hromade 13 listopadu 1864 a die toho byl pak i upraven prapor. Sokolsky kroj jet navrhl opet znamy main-. Jos. Manes vyjadroval tez usilf boje za svobodu a slovanske vlastenectvi. Cervend italskeho ko§ile ptipominala vlastence a revolucionate Garibaldiho, Oernohorsko-hercegovska, povstalecka eapka se sokolim perem byla ptevzata od jihoslovanti, §nerovand kazajka "kajda" ptipominala polske povstalce a §iroke kaihoty, shrnute do bot, byly z latky z ruskeho lnu. Sokolska zakladni hesla i pisne hned od poeatku jasne ukazovaly vlastenecka zameteni teto organizace. Vtdyf jiz na druhe valne schftzi teto jednoty navrhl dr. Julius Gregr vedle Tyr§ova hesla "Tutme se!" vyrazne vlastenecky apel: "Silou k svobode!" Sokolove z podnetu Jindt. Fugnera nosili jako svnj odznak od konce btezna 1862 kovove S na eervene hedvabne kokarde. V tomto S tehda za Rakouska bylo ukryto revolueni heslo: "Svornostf silou svoboda, svobodou slava!"

V teto ptekotne kvapici vine narodniho uvedomeni Ceske noviny psaly o Sokole co ztototneni probouzejici se narodni sily a budoucim blanickem vojsku. Sokol byl tedy od sveho vzniku v roce 1862 — pied 120 lety — jak pro telovychovu tak pro kulturni poslani spojeny s narodnim uvedomenim a ptipravou k boji za svobodu vlasti.

Sokolske hnuti se pro svou narodni ngplri rychle roz§itilo v deskYch zemich a jiz na podzim v roce 1863 byl zaloten tez Jun Sokol v slovinske Lublani v nynej§i Jugoslavii. V tinoru roku 1865 byla zalotena prvni sokolska jednota v St. Louis u nas ye Spojenych St gtech. V roce 1866 vznikl polsky Sokol ye Lvove, ve §vyeacskem meste Zurychu byl krajany zaloten Sokol v roce 1867 a ve stejnem roku tez ye Vidni. V roce 1870 vznikly 2 sokolske jeditty na Volyni, v MirohoSti v carskern Rusku, ktere pies slibny zaatek se

neucittely. V roce 1879 byl utvoten Balkansky Sokol v Sofii v I3ulharsku a pied rokem 1882 byl zaloten Sokol v chorvatskem Zagrebu v Jugoslavii.

V roce 1883 vznikl Sokol v Terstu a v IVIozirji. Behem dalsich let, ptedev§im v tomto stoleti, jak pied druhou svetovou valkou tak i po ni, Sokol vznikl v fade jinych evropskych zemich jako na pt. v 13elgii, Francii, Anglii a ye gvedsku. Mimo Evropu Sokol existuje v Argentine, Australii, v Brazilii, v Canade, v Jizni Africe, v Maroku a tu ve Spojenych Statech.

U nas v Americe prvni byla jiz zminend jednota Sokol St. Louis, zalotend v roce 1865. Za necelych 20 let pozdeji bylo jiz tu 20 sokolskych jednot s narodni sokolskou jednotou neboli centrem Sokola v USA v Chicagu. Kdyt v roce 1921 se konal I slet Americke Obce Sokolske (AOS) tak k teto ptiletitosti ptijela do USA poeetna. delegace Ceske Obce Sokolske (COS) ze stare vlasti stejne jako ptijeli ptedstavitele Americkeho Sokola na prvni slet Sokola potadany na pamet 20 vyroei vzniku Sokola ye dnech 17-19 eervna 1882 na Stfeleckein ostrove na tece Vltave v Praze. Vzorna, drutstva mud' a ten Sokola z Ceskoslovenska pod vedenim dr. Miroslava Klingera, namestka n geelnika COS byla nav§tevou v Americe na pozvani Americke Obce Sokolske v roce 1928 a poeetna skupina sokolft ze stare vlasti byla ptitomna sletu Americkeho Sokola v roce 1933 v Chicagu. Na tyto slavne dny nikdy nezapomenu jelikot jsem byl v Sokole od roku 1934 a zfteastnil jsem se tohoto sletu.

Zakladatele Americkeho Sokola a jejich pokraeovatele jak v hlavnirn vedeni tak v fttadech jednotlivych jednot stejne jako prakticky v§echno elenstvo byli hrdi na svftj pftvod a na narodni poslani Sokola v na§i krajanske vetvi zde ve Spojenych Statech. AmerickV Sokol byl zaloten na zasadach dr. Mirosl. Tyr§e, Jindt.

Fugnera a bratri GregrA viasteneckymi vystehovalci ze stare vlasti k vzajernne pospolitosti a k vychove pti§fich generaci v ceskem naxodnim duchu. 1. Reported (indirect) speech: statements and questions.

Unlike English the verbs in Czech reported speech stay in the same tense as would be used in direct speech. Present tense denotes an action simultaneous to the action of the main clause. Past tense denotes that something happened before the action of the main clause while future tense denotes that something happened or will happen later than the action of the main clause.
