It will continue to be my aim and purpose to satisfy one and all if at all possible; in fact, this is my duty.

Your editor also is pleased to state that in this respect this office has succeeded to a very large degree; complaints were very few and far between. (Some completely unnecessary).

Through everyone's effort we can continue making the Vestnik looked forward to, and helping to make its contents as interesting as possible by submitting consistently good material and abiding by the deadline which is Friday noon. Schedule appears in the Vestnik weekly which you can clip to your calendar for better orientation.

We are confident that by continued cooperation, our collective work will be achieving even greater results.

We welcome each and every article and report, because they all radiate healthy activity which is essential to growth and progress of your individual lodges. Features August Kacir was born the 17th of April, 1892, in Engle, Texas, in Fayette County near Yoakum. August is one of the sons of Josef and Mary Gallia Kacir. His father came to this country from Czechoslovakia in the year 1881.

August attended public school in Lavaca County, and later he taught in schools there for several years after attending the Southwest Texas Teachers College at San Marcos. After serving in the U.S. Army in World War I, he worked his way through, and received his Bachelor of Law degree from The University of Texas. He started in practice of law in Temple in 1923.

August Kacir has served as legal adviser for the SPJST since 1924, except for four years, and is an active member of SPJST Lodge No. 87, and actively participated in all SPJST activities. He is a member of the State and County Bar Assodiations and member of the American Judicature Society. He is a past president of the Bell-Lampasas-Mills Counties Bar Association.

Czech School in Dallas

The Czech school in Dallas will again resume activity on Wednesday night, January 3rd, 1973 in the SPJST Lodge No. 84 Hall on Floyd Street in Dallas, at 7:30 in the evening.

Will all those interested please come to enroll the first evening and let's get the class started.

• Tuesday, December 19, we enjoyed a nice brief visit with Brother Stanley Patak of Dallas and Brother and Sister Julius Dubcaa of Waco.

• • Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Muehlstein of Plano proudly announce the arrival of their fifth child — a girl named Alecia Renee She arrived December 12 at 5:45 p. in. 'weighing 8 lbs., 7 1/2 oz. She was welcomed home by her sister Amy and her brothers Andy, Aaron and Adrian. The Muehlsteins are members of Dallas Lodge 84.

Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Urban of the Dallas Lodge and Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Muehlstein, Sr. of StaMford Lodge 99.

AUGUST KACIR

August Kacir has always been active in fraternal and civic organizations. He was always active and interested in 'the Czech language being taught at The University of Texas as well as at other schools, and the student loan fund and has served the Czech Ex-Students Association since 1923. He aided many students financially and advised and encouraged them to complete higher education.

Among some of the other organizations he is a member of are: Scottish Rite Shrine in Waco, Cen-Tex Shrine Club of Bell County, Knob Creek Lodge

3 (Mason) of Temple, American Legion, Veterans of World War I, Texas Farm Bureau, the Farm and Ranch Club and Pecan Growers Association. He also served as past patron of the Eastern Star.

He married Bettie Marie Lesikar of Taylor, the daughter of Frank and Johanna Svadlenak Lesikar. Many SPJST members are acquainted with his wife as well as with the children of August and Bettie Kacir, namely Stanley Kacir, Sidney Kacir and Betty Kacir Wheeler, as well as one of his brothers, George E. Kacir, and his brother-in-law, Reuben B. Lesikar.

August Kacir greatly enjoyed fraternalism and his work and his many friends in the SPJST. (This picture was bent in shipment and leaves a mark which appears to be a scar, on Brother Kacir's head.

We regret this unfortunate happening).

Mr. and Mrs. Louis Kokes of San Angelo, Texas, and Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Krupala of Wall, Texas, were honored with a double 25th wedding anniversary reception in the Unity of the Brethren Church Fellowship Building, in Wall on November 24.

Hosting the reception were Mrs Ann Gibson and Marilyn Gibson and Mr. ...nd Mrs. Stanley Holik, Jr., Mrs. Holik is the daughter of the Krupalas. Marilyn Gibson and Mrs..Holik are godchildren of the Knokes.

The serving table was covered with a white table cloth. Two white cakes were placed in the center of the table.

The cakes had the couples' names inscribed with silver on white ribbon, which included the inscription: "25th wedding anniversary" in silver on the white ribbon. Two silver candles in crystal candle holders were placed by the cakes, pink punch, white cake squares, party sandwiches, mixed nuts, mints, canapes, and hors d'oeuvres were served.

Mrs. J. D. Drgac of Odessa served the cake. Miss Clarice Drgac of San Angelo served the punch.

Two register books were placed on the register table which was covered with a white table cloth and was decorated with white carnations in a crystal vase and silver ribbons.

The gift tables were covered with white table cloths. The Kokes' table was decorated with a :blue ribbon and large white bell with silver trim. The name Louis and Dorothy was inscribed in silver on the blue ribbon. Mrs.

Kokes wore a blue dress and an orchid corsage for the occasion.

The Krupala gift table was decorated with a pink ribbon and a large white bell trimmed in silver with the inscription "Edwin and Viola" in silver on the pink ribbon. Mrs. Krupala wore an orchid dress and an orchid corsage.

Mrs. Kokes is the former Dorothy Drgac . Mrs. Krupala is the former Viola Dr g ac, both are the daughters of the late Mr. and Mrs. Walter Drgac. The Kokes and Krupalas were married at the Unity of the Wall Brethren Church on November 21st, 1947. The couples were married on the same date that the late Walter J. Drgacs were married, November 21, 1915. This marriage ceremony took place in the Drgac family home near Cook's Point. The late Drga.cs' wedding ceremony was performed by the late Rev. Joseph Hegar of Temple. The late Rev. Joseph Ilegar also performed the wedding ceremony for the Edwin Krupala's while Rev. Joseph a Barton, Jr., of Taylor performed the Louis Kokes' wedding ceremony.

The Kokes and Krupala's expressed their sincere thanks to all present for the many lovely gifts received. Both couples are members of SPJST Lodge 160, San Angelo, and the Unity of Wall

Brethren Church, and the Mutual Aid Society Local 25 of the Wall Church.

We wish to express our sincere thanks to those who came out to help us celebrate this occasion. God grant you health and other blessings.

Wednesday, December 27, 1972 LODGE NO. 15, RUCKHOLTS Dear Members, Our last meeting was called to order by President Ed Svoboda on Sunday, December 3, 1972, at 2 p.m. The minutes were read and approved as read. We are so happy to hear that all our sick members were doing better.

Mrs. Charlie Kohutek is in the hospital; she is not a member but she always attends our meetings and helps us like a member. We all wish her a speedy recovery. We had the election of our officers for 1973. ETTERS Temple, Texas Dec. 19, 1972 IN APPRECIATION This is to acknowledge our appreciation and respect to retiring Supreme Lodge Secretary R. A. Urbanovsky for his many years of service to the SPJST Society.

In a more personal way, the two of us would like to express our sincere thanks and appreciation for the privilege of working directly under Mr. Urbanovsky these many years.

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Brothers and Sisters: Perhaps everyone will be so preoccupied during the holidays that they won't even have time to read my letter, but duty before pleasure, so here goes; first, I hope that all of you had a wonderful Christmas.

Coming events at Lodge 88 — On Saturday, December 30th, a country-: western dance with music by The Sunnyland Cowboys. Sunday, December 31st, the big New Year's Eve dance, music by The Hi-Toppers of New Braunfels; admission $7.50 per person.

Set-ups and souvenirs will be furnished, free. Saturday, January 6, 1973 a semi-formal dance to the music of Les Blume and his orchestra. Then on Saturday, January 20th, the Vrazels Polka Orchestra will be here for a nice variety dance.

Other activities are: Wednesday, January 3rd — Birthday Club Sisters card party; on every Thursday we haye a big social night with a home-

Wednesday, January 10th, the Birthday Club sisters will hold their meeting, luncheon, more games and prizes.

Also a reminder that Lodge 88's annual meeting will be on Sunday, January 14th. starting at 10 a.m.; more details later.

This and that ___ Belated item: Tommy Caraway was appointed assistant District V youth director and I believe he will make a good one. He was appointed at our last District V meeting. President Tillie Helmcamp honored some of our members at the last monthly meeting. These were members who are not on any committee, but who gave so much of themselves to the lodge. And we enjoyed something special, Clarence Baca, Joe Nesvadba and Henry Repka, came up with some wholesome trio music, before and after the meeting. It was appreciated.

The assembly sang "Happy Birthday" to all who were born in the Christmas month. The winners cf the door prizes were Mildred Holernan and Sophie Harripel. Faye Evetts won steak dinner tickets, donated by Have a Burger, 1133 W. 19th. The owner or manager is a member of SPJST, Mr. R. L. Pearson, whom I had the pleasure of signing up and who brought his whole family for initiation, won a record donated by Clarence and Patsy Baca. The thirstkiller (pivo) was donated by yours truly and wife, Rose Hareilea.

The Blumes dance was a very nice one, many enjoyed gliding over the floor to their music, and so was the three-band battle dance with Lee Ray Matocha, the Texas Dutchmen, and Joe Patek. There were quite a few visitors from out of town at this dance, but I only have a few names: Lillia, Mae and Victor Peter and some of their friends from the Pasadena lodge. Elsie and Frank Brdecka and their group from Rosenberg. Also Martha and Alvin Kocich and their friends from Sugar Land, Texas.

Birdie and Al Hilsher were the donors of a good dinner at the December Birthday Club sisters meeting and gift exchanging party. On Saturday, December 16, some singers from the adult and youth groups went to the Needville S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home to cheer up the guests with a few carol selections. Gifts were also distributed to them to re-

VEST 14 f vividly. It was truly time well spent and a nice trip besides. Brother Joe Elzner finally broke away from. the domino game long enough to inform us that he and a group of hunters went out into the Wild West and all came home with venison (deer meat).

Yes, they had fun! The pleasure of going and relaxing is sometimes worth it alone; to be with raw nature for awhile.

Now is the time to pick up your magic wand and try to peer into 1973 to see what the new year has in store for you, and, again, it. may be best not to see into our future, but rather concentrate on old (Sylvester) "Auld Lang Syne," lest he hang a big hangover on you as he be sneaking out the back door of 1972, to make room for junior Sylvester, 1973. There were several members mentioned as being on the sick list, so let's hope with all hope that all are improving and enjoying the holidays.

On the sad note, Ester Holton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Kusy, lost her husband, Edward Holton. He passed away in California after a lengthy illness. Our sympathy is extended to his, entire family.

We enjoyed having all of you and we hope you will come again.

Correspondence: a Christmas card from Editor Rudy Sefcik and family, and McLennan County Distributing Association; thank-you notes from Brother Bill Jost and the Louis Kazda family.

President Smith asked everyone to stand in silent prayer for Brother Louis Kazda, Brother Allen of Elmira, New York, father of Sister Betty Slovak; Mr. Cyril Kuropata, father of Brother Theodore Kuropata. We extend our sympathy to these families on the loss of their loved ones.

Brother Henry Slovak had Sister Engelke, to read the Board of Trustees' minutes from the Monday, December 4th meeting.

Sister Jeanette Smith gave the Entertainment Committee report. She had received $15 in donations for the food baskets. The baskets will be filled and delivered on Friday, December 22nd.

She thanked everyone for their donation of food items that were donated.

Julia Slovak, gave the Youth Club report. The club has been very busy..

They have other activities and projects planned.

Eight new members were accepted in December. They are Josephine Lenart, Arthur Crawford, Margaret Cunningham, Donnie C. Taylor, Jr., Kristin L. Palms, Carol A. Kirkland, Kristi L. Heussner, and Michel D. Walker.

Mrs. Jim Taylor was voted on to become a social member. Welcome to Lodge 66!

Health, Committee Chmn. Sister Agnes Mazanec, reported she had sent get-well cards to Brother Charlie Walsh, S. L. President Nick Morris, and Brother Alvin Nesuda, who had an eye injury. We hope Brother Nesuda is doing fine. A sympathy card was sent to the Kazda family, Sister Brenda Kutscherousky is in the hospital. We hope she is doing OK. A resolution was read for Brother Louis Kazda,, who passed awa •r nn Saturday, November 18, 1972.

SL President Nick Morris gave a brief talk on Christmas in the home and friendship. It was brief, but very interesting. If these thoughts and deeds were carried out the whole year through, not just at Christmastime, a lot of good would be accomplished, for, as you give, so shall you receive. A friendly hello or greeting, means a lot when it comes from the heart and not just for publicity, not just on holidays, but for the whole year, and everyday, for it is more blessed to give, than to receive. We were so glad, Brother Morris and family could be with us. We wish Brother Morris the best of health for the new year.

Brother Edward Marek, wished everyone a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year, from he and Mrs. Marek. He said they were so happy to be able to attend. It was so nice to see them, since Brother Marek's illness.

We wish him and Sister Marek, the best of health, also.

State Youth Director, Sister Dorothy Massey spoke a few words. It was so nice to have her with us.

It was nice to have Sistor Maxine Sefcik join us. We were sorry Brother Rudy could nat come. We hope he gets along fine. Just take good care of yourself, Brother Rudy, We missed you.

Brother Ed Mazanec of the Publication Committee and Sister Agnes were present. Glad to have them with us.

Brother Nick then installed the officers and committees of Lodge 66 for 1973. Brother Morris explained their duties and wished them success. Thank you Brother Morris.

Vice• President Jim Locke, presented a gift to President Silas and Sister Jeanette Smith.

The youth club presented gifts to their youth leader and assistant leaders, and a very nice cutlery set to Lodge 66. We thank them very much for this nice gift.

VESTNIK The youth club presented a very cute Christmas program, acting out the Nativity Scene and singing Christmas carols, ending with "Jingle Bells," and who should appear but Jolly Santa Claus, who stopped by to visit with all the kiddos present.

The door prize for meeting attendance was won by Brother Ed Mazanec.

The beautiful Christmas centerpiece, 'for door prize was won by President Silas Sinith.

Meeting adjourned and everyone enjoyed a very delicious buffet supper. A lot of calories were added on, but I'm sure it was worth it for one day; a big thanks, to the ladies in the kitchen: Sisters Lillie Matula, Georgia Sykora and Sister Pavlicek. They did an excellent job. We certainly appreciated the work they did.

As we come to the holiday season, may we all take time to count our blessings, large or small, and look forward to the new year with hopes of accomplishing more than last year. Let's all strive for peace and harmony, more doing, less bickering, and fault finding; the world will be a better place with' more smiles and friendly hellos, we can get a, lot more done.

Wednesday, December 27, 1972 LODGE NO. 35, ELK Dear Members: The December 10th meeting was called to order by President Brother Vernon Wood at 2:45 p.m. Due to the inclement weather, some members were a little late, and for some it will be a day they won't forget soon because some had to spend the night, and then journey home the next day, after the roads began to thaw out.

The pledge of allogiance was led by our youth club.

President Wood then asked all for a. moment of silence, for our departed members, Jessie Williams, James Pa y -elkandWimMakovy. the rest in peace.

Brother Wood welcomed our visitors who were: Mr. and Mrs. Jess Halbert, Mr. and Mrs. Conway Brown, Mr. and Mrs. David Trussell. Mr. and Mrs. John Foyt, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Harwell and son, Debbie Alexander, Connie Kubitza, Jodie Thun, Kate Boder, Karen Somerfeld, and Maxine and Terry Sefcik.

Secretary Brother Albert Banik read the minutes of the previous meeting which were approved. He then read notes from all the Supreme Lodge officers, thanking us for the invitation, but due to illness or other commitments they could not be with us. Also a note from District III Youth Director Wilma. Nesuda,, a thank-you note from Sister Helen Dulock and a letter from Father Frank Miller.

The chairmen all gave their reports.

Youth Leader Sister Rosemarie Banik gave her report and also expressed her thanks to Brother Edwin Holub, for the check he gave the youth club.

Those having birthdays in December were Brother Charlie Pavelka, Sisters Gloria Pavelka, Margurete Mach, Sondro Dieterich and Brother Terry Hand.

Our new member accepted was Christopher Holub.

Adult door prize went to Sister Ruby Pavelka, and the youth door prize to Tracy Breitkreutz.

Kitchen Chairman Sister Rosemarie Banik asked me to announce that any member who feels that he cannot work in the kitchen and/or bar for the next year, to please feel free to take their name off the work list and those members who haven't worked, but would like to help in the coming year, to please notify one of the kitchen or bar chairmen.

during this past year, and especially during his illness.

On the sick list was Sister Vla,sta, Pavelka, and as of this writing, I've heard that Brother Willie Adamek has been ill with bronchial pneumonia. We certainly all wish them a speedy recovery.

The meeting adjourned and the youth then presented a Cliri,tmas program, for which we all thank you. We always enjoy seeing the children perform, and they do a great job.

After the program we all enjoyed a delicious supper, after which "good old Santa - came and gave out goodies and listened to the children's wishes. Then came the good music and dancing and hospitality that we hated to leave, but I guess that it was best that most jour-neyed on home since the roads were very icy, and some, as I stated earlier, had to spend the night.

I would like to wish everyone a happy, healthy, and prosperous new year.

LODGE NO. 97, PLACED() Dear Members and Friends: We held our annual meeting Sunday, December 17 in the afternoon, at Brother and Sister Frank Stavarek's home with 7 members present; usually it's just 5 members. It has also happened when there were only four and then we couldn't hold the meeting, but that happened about twice in a year or so. We have fun just the same, but if we would have more members to come and join us, then we really could have more fun; of course, that's after the meeting.

We are not sure whether Sister Edith Charanza will serve on the Entertainment Committee for 1973; that will have to be worked out at the next meeting which will be held January 6,

There were donations sent in to be used in our building fund, we will try to get a list of all who donated and perhaps could display the list for all to read.

Brother Olson had some membership cards made in Trinity and they will be given out probably about the first of the year to each member.

President Brother R. Hefner passed the beautiful Christmas card around for all the members to see; it was sent by our editor and his family, and it is really appreciated.

Our past meeting was most enjoyable; the atmosphere was like Christmastime; a beautiful table was set by Sister Hefner with cookies, mints, nuts, and good hot coffee. It was a cold rainy night and so many came, so we look forward to another good turnout.

We had wished for more members to attend our Thanksgiving turkey supper; it was a beautiful evening, the tables were so attractively decorated with candles, flowers and white tablecloths, all compliments of Sister Janey Minein and Sister Mary Ross. By the way, Mary Ross is visiting her folks in Germany this month.

The weather was cold and rainy for our Thanksgiving ,feast. In fact, there were thoughts Of postponing the event, but it wasn't possible since the turkey and dressing was prepared, so we really were sorry all did-'t p--t to attend our eventlul occasion. Brother Charanza and Brother David Moore set up the oil drum; Brother Chester Shmoldas had the wood so all would be kept warm. Thanks to all who participated in the preparations.

There are some plans for a New Year's Eve social here at the RVOS Hall; that would be on Sunday evening, so all of you plan on that enjoyable social evening.

LODGE NO. 30, TAITON Dear Members: The SPJST Lodge No. 30 held its regular monthly meeting on Sunday at the Taiton Community Center with a very good attendance. Election of officers was held. After supper they had a program of Christmas carols and group singing and as they were finishing with "Here Comes Santa Claus" a ,:loor opened and who was there but Santa Claus himself with a sack of goodies for the children. After he left, gifts were exchanged.

Mrs. Frank Brdecka, the district youth director of East Bernard and Mr. Brdecka were special guests.

FROM THE PRESIDENT'S OFFICE A Review of The XXIst Convention Dear Members: I have stated since the convention that at the appropriate time I would submit to you my comments on the recent convention.

The first thing I would like to mention is something that was brought to my attention during and after the convention. I was told that an outsider or visitor to the Convention Hall on the mezzanine floor of the Rice Hotel had

Still, there are questions and some confusion as to how these donations are. arrived at. After the last few conventions, the Supreme Lodge has received a number of complaints from irate members and relatives of members, some of them rather hostile and not very nice, but all of them seem to hold the Supreme Lodge responsible for the amount and distribution of these donations, for example, the donations to our elderly members, residing both in and outside rest homes. These dona-, tions to the older members have never been made as the result of any recommendation from the Supreme Lodge.

The Supreme Lodge has absolutely nothing to do with this, except that the checks to these people are sent from here, shortly after each convention, and the checks go to those who were approved by and in the convention.

There seems to be confusion as to which members are qualified for these donations and who decides if that member qualifies. This is strictly up to the local lodge and officers, and unless they submit their recommendations to the Salary and Donations Committee, there won't be any donations to anyone in that lodge.

A member recently wrote: "An article in the Vestnik recently stated that certain members are receiving $25 and $10 from different lodges. Would you please explain which members are qualified for that and then who is to decide if that member is qualified." That letter proves that some of our members do not understand how that donation works. In short, if a member's name is not submitted by the local lodge officers to the Committee on Salaries and Donations, no donations will be made.

These donations are valid only for the period of the convention. Other letters have been quite hostile.

All of this should cause us to engage in a careful re-appraisal and wonder if these donations are really creating the good will that they were intended to.

After January 1, 1973, we will have some new titles coming into use: district sales representatives instead of district organizers; sales representative instead of organizer; and district youth counselor instead of district

The refund to lodges remains at 7 per cent of the premiums remitted to the Supreme Lodge during the preceding year.

Premium refunds to members will also be continued with this new provision designed to help local , lodges in their expense of mailing out these refund checks (effective 1 Jan. 1973): "The Supreme Lodge will remit 10c per refund check to local lodges annually to help pay their mailing expense."

Article 38(b) under "Mortuary Fund" provides that: "Loans may be made to an SPJST lodge for a lodge, land and building, for full value up to $70,000 and for not more than 66 2/3 per cent of the appraised value above $70,000."

This gives very broad authority and permission for local lodges to borrow money to purchase land and build lodge halls. Quite naturally, the Supreme Lodge felt that there should be some guidelines and requirements that the lodges would have to fulfill before they could borrow money under this article. The requirements, in the event you missed them in the Vestnik of November 8, 1972, are as follows: LIST OF REOUIREMENTS For special full value land and building lodge loan Eligibility under this special plan is determined by the following qualifying requirements. These requirements were set by the entire Supreme Lodge SPJST in meeting on October 12, 1972.

1. The lodge must meet regularly, at least once a month.

2. The lodge must submit a list of its elected officers to the Supreme Lodge.

The lodge must have a •board of trustees to administer its property.

4. The lodge must have at least one active organizer signing up new members.

5. The lodge must have a youth club leader and a youth club or definite plans for a youth club.

6. The lodge must be in good standing with the Supreme Lodge in all respects.

7. The lodge must have definite plans for repayment of the loan.

8. The lodge must have a functioning and active entertainment committee.

9. The lodge should have at least 100 adult (age 16 and over) members.

10. The lodge must have sufficient funds left to construct an adequate

VESTNIIi building after deducting cost of the land. Any loan amount in excess of $70,000 will be on a 1/3 down basis.

11. The lodge must have sufficient funds, or pledges or other provisions or arrangements whereby it can purchase sufficient supplies, furniture, and equipment for the building once it is built.

12. The site must be in a desirable location and the lodge hall must be new or in good condition.

13. The lodge must have majority support of its members for the building program and it must have enough interested workers to successfully operate a lodge hall.

14. The lodge must have definite plans for the kind of activities it will sponsor to raise revenue.

15. The lodge must have suitable building plans and specifications prepared for approval.

16. The site must have adequate parking space available.

17. The lodge must meet all legal requirements in order to create a valid lien.

18. The lodge will not expect the Supreme Lodge to handle interim financing during the construction period.

Article 36(z) (old Article 40) continues the provision that the Supreme Lodge - may reduce the premiums on A or B policies that have been in force 35 years and when the member has reached the age of '70. Also, the provision remains in Article 76 (old Article 80) that holders of A policies may pay their premiums on an annual basis with a discount of 4 per cent.

Article 61(a) stipulates that the sales representatives will collect $10 or one month's premium, whichever is greater, at the time the application of new members is written. The old provision stipulated that the sales representative would collect $6 or one month's premium, so this is a change.

The convention authorized the Supreme Lodge to put a group hospitalization plan for Supreme Lodge officers and employees into effect on or immediately after January 1, 1973. The cost of such group hospitalization insurance is to be shared on a 50/50 basis by the SPJST and the participant. It turns out that after checking with several companies writing group hospitalization plans, that the purchase of life insurance is a part of such a package plan. This seems to be common throughout the industry, and we had

11 reconciled ourselves to that fact. However, in attempting to put this plan and coverage into effect, we found that in the case of so many of cur employees, the husbands' hospitalization coverage at his place of employment covered maternity benefits, which our proposed plan did not. (Most of our employees are females). Also, the spouses' contribution toward the premiums was almost nil at his place of employment.

To sum it all up, it was generally felt that it would not be to any advantage to participate in a plan where the employee's contribution would be greater than the plans already in effect, and most felt they did not want to disturb their or their spouse's hospitalization plans. A check with various businesses in the Temple area reveals that ,a big majority of them pay all of the premiums for the employee and the ernployee pays the premiums for his dependents, or it was found that businesses pay 50 per cent across the board for both employee and dependents. A check with the city personnel director for the City of Temple confirms the fact that the City of Temple pays the entire hospitalization premium for all city employees, including garbage collectors. If there is going to be any thought of offering this fringe benefit to employees at the next convention, (and most businesses do), then there will have to be further examination of the matter.

It was brought out at the convention by our actuary that it would be a good thing that anything that might affect the overall financial posture of our Society be first submitted to and reviewed by our actuary. (Reference his report and comments toward the end of the convention Proceedings).

This makes a lot of sense because frequently proposals for expenditures are made with no research or consideration given to whether the Society can afford the expense, or, if it can afford it in dollars and cents, consideration needs to be given to the resulting financial posture of the SPJST. This area is a very technical and complicated one and our actuary, if he has had the time and opportunity prior to the convention, is the one person who can put his statistical pencil to the proposal and tell us at the convention whether the expenditure or proposal is financially feasible. After all, we must look at our overall financial picture, not just one portion of' it, and what we would like' to spend on one hand does

affebt other phase 3 and operations of our Society.

Other remunerations, salaries, expenses and allowances for the next four 3, ears are s_t forth in the official Proceedings.

Article 97 requires local lodges to submit copies of their lodge by-laws to the Supreme Lodge if they have any.

When this came up in the convention, there was some confusion because many lodges stated that they did not have local lodge by-laws. It was pointed out that Article 97 did not requir,s local lodges to have by-laws, but if they did, they would be required to submit them to the Supreme Lodge.

This will serve a mutual advantage in that if local by-laws contravene the Supreme Lodge by-laws, perhaps the local lodge's attention can be called to that fact. Also, if a local lodge has adopted something that is unenforceable or conflicts with the Supreme Lodge by-laws, they will probably run into difficulty with that by-law, and if this is pointed out to them ahead of time, they can effect a correction before the trouble arises.

Regarding our permanent family youth camp, the minutes of the convention will show that I favored buying only the land for such a camp to begin with, if any steps were going to be taken at all in this direction. The minutes will also show that in conferring with our actuary, there appealed to be a legal problem as to a-ether we can own such property, over and above property on whicn to locate our home office building. (Insurance Code of Texas governing fraternals). It was then pointed out that mon- y-wise, we would be better off continuing to rent camp facilities rather than investing in a permanent-type camp, and a motion was made to postpone the matter to the next convention.

The Miss SPJST competition, as far as the competition itself, came off beautifully. There is no point in commenting on the one unpleasant aspect of that evening, except to say that no one really could be blamed for what happened. It was most unfortunate and sad, especially in view of the young people present. I can almost guarantee you that that particular speaker will not be asked to ever speak at any SPJST function again. Enough said.

The next convention will be held in 'Waco in 1976 and the dates have already been confirmed by Waco Con-

vention Center authorities.

In conclusion, I would like to express, in behalf of the entire convention, our gratitude to the convention chairman and vice-chairman for conducting a smooth convention; again to the four convention secretaries, the By-Law Committee, the Convention Plannin g Committee (consisting of members from. Lodges 88 and 142), and all other committees who functioned before and during the convention. I feel that the entire convention was a distinct credit to our Society.

By Bob Richards, Champion Athlete There is a story about two great big dumb athletes. Two coaches were debating which one had the dumbest athlete, and the football coach said, "I got the dumbest athlete that ever lived." The basketball coach said, "I don't care how dumb your athlete is, I got a basketball player that's even dumber." So they made a bet and the football coach said, "Watch this."

He sa'.d, "Hey Pete," and this great big 300 lo. football player came up — barn, ham, he hits both sides of the door and comes in and says, "Yes, sir." And the coach said, "Here's a quarter go buy me a Cadillac," and he goes cunning out. The football coach says, "Can you believe this? That guy thinks he can buy a Cadillac with a quarter." The basketball coach said, "That ain't nothing, watch this. Hey, Joe!" And this great big, tall basketball player comes in. Barn! He hits his

head on the door and comes right up to the coach and says, "Yes, sir." He says, "Go down to my office and see if I'm there." "Yes, sir," and out he goes, Barn, he hits his head on the door and keeps going. The basketball coach says, "Can you believe that? That guy is going down to my office to see if I'm there and I'm sitting right in front of him. How dumb can you get?" So they are debating which one won the bet, The athletes meet at the elevator and the big football player says, "You know the pressure. My coach has been hit too many times. You know he gave me the money to get him a car and he didn't tell me what color he wanted."

And the the great big tall basketball player says, "You think'that's bad, my coach is off his rocker. Do you know he sent me down to his office to see if he was there? Huh, he had a telephone.

He could have called and found out for himself."

Well, the reason I tell this story, is for two reasons. Number one: athletes are not all dumb, as the cliche is. And number two: they're not all seven feet tall and they're not all 309 pounders.

We like to think in today's world that all these great big tall men with leverage and this is what makes them.

Actually, I want to shock you with a statistic. Ninety-five per cent of the champions I have known, in twentyfive years of sports coverage and competition, happen to be under five feet, ten and weigh about 17'5 pounds. That means they're very average people, just like you and me. They're average guys the same size, the same weight. They are average guys who become motivated. They get a dream, they get a dream, they get a goal. And they take their average abilities, and go to the top. r believe there is genius in the average man. This is my theme tonight.

There is genius in man. Now this is part of the American heritage. Abraham Lincoln said, "God must have loved the common man, because he made so many of them." I'd like to paraphrase it and say this, God must have loved the average guy, because he made so many of us. Now I don't believe in the term genius, per se. We like to excuse ourselves by saying if anyone's great, it's because they are endowed by nature with something we don't have. They've got a bigger muscle, or they've got a bigger brain than I, or they are more endowed at birth.

ec There is genius in every man.

There is genius in every person in this audience here tonight. One psychologist expressed my point of view this way: 99. per cent of the people here tonight are operating on about 1 per cent of the capacity within them. If I could get you using two or three per cent of your capacity, they'd probably call you genius. This is what happens: along comes a guy who uses some of his capacity and people say, "Oh, he's a genius — he's a genius." If I could just get you to utilize five per cent of your great capacity, you could be regarded as a genius. William James, the father of American psychologists, said that he had never known anyone who has put out ten per cent of his capacity. Never known anyone to put out ten per cent. Now I know this is in counter-distinction to the coach who says, "My boys put out 110 per cent."

Well now, that's a nice statement. But it doesn't really follow. Most of us have a vast reservoir of ability we never touch — we never discover. We go through life sitting on the most fantastic abilities in the world and never use them. It's the most amazing phenomenon in life there is — that people don't use their capacities.

Now I want to try to get you using your capacities tonight. I want to try to get you motivated, and by the way, that's where a man does discover his capacity when he becomes motivated.

Now, what is your capacity? Do you, honest to God, know what your capacity is? Do you know what's within you? I read a statement the other day for example; it said this, "The human brain is the equivalent of five of the best computers in the world today."

Within the average brain is the equivaknt of five computers and yet the man said this: "Less than one half of one per cent of brain power is ever used by the average person."

Love is another source of tremendous motivation, like the guy who went out with this gorgeous girl and he was just so flabbergasted he could hardly talk, turned off the ignition, and looked out the window. Well, the girl was getting tired of the silence too, so she scooted over close to him, and she laid her head on his shoulder and with her great, big, brown eyes, she looked up into his eyes and she said. "You know, I could really get in the mood, if the top was down." He was telling his roommate about it the next day,

and he said, "You know it took me twenty minutes to get the top down on that stupid car of mine." The roommate said, "I don't understand. It only takes me eight seconds on my convertible." He said, "Yeah, but my car wasn't a convertible." So you see, that's what a man can do. He can rip the top right off a car if he has ta, Motivation.

It's unbelievable what it does when you want to be free. When you're fighting for a cause that you believe in with all your heart, it's amazing how you can exist.

I was in Miami not too long ago and we honored a salesman at the American Salesmasters who's been in America for two years He's a refugee from Cuba, I couldn't believe the story.

Here was a guy who fought his way out of Cuba, was shot at in a boat, and got over to Miami. Now he couldn't speak the language, think of this, didn't have any contacts, didn't know the cultural background of America, didn't know a soul, didn't have a penny, no education, none of the things you and I have. Last year he made over $400,000 selling in Miami. Now if you were to go to people in Miami and say, "Can you sell $400,000 worth of products?"

They'd say, "Oh no, it can't be done.

Not here in this town." They speak the language, they've got the contacts, they have friends, they ' ye got everything, but you see it took a refugee, coming over to Miami without any of these things, to show what the capacity of a human being really 'is.

You see, we can do things, these things can happen. When a man becomes motivated he discovers brain power, emotional power, will power, physical power that he never thought he had. There is genius in every person here tonight. There is genius in the average man. That's what I want to try to get you to do.

Now in the sports world, you see it all the time, I can't believe some of the things I see in the sports world. I think of Jerry Kramer in his book "Instant Replay." He talks about playing with broken ribs, excruciating pain, but ,goes back out on the field and drives to win the ball game. Perhaps there is no greater sports story than the one that comes out of *Santa Clara, California. We've got a swimming team up there of just average kids — average kids. I went up to speak to them after the Olympics last year, and I walked in and I couldn't believe my eyes. Here

they were, 15 of .-th&n, average age, 15.

Their coach was sitting on my left and I nudged him and I said, "George, what's the secret of this fantastic bunch of kids?" I couldn't believe it.

The girls weighed 115 lbs., and were about five feet, four inches, on the average. The greatest swimmer in the world, Mark Sp t, weighed 150 lbs., was five feet ten inchea tall. There he sat, 150 lbs., a little guy, and held about eight world's records. I said, "What's the secret of this bunch?" Now, these kids weren't imported from all over the country. They were indigenous to that area, average kids. He said, "Come out and watch the workout." So I went out the next day and I wish you could have seen those kids come out of the locker rooms. I thought they might come out, you know, "Oh gee, I don't want to work today. I'm tired." You want to get the picture? Out of the girls' locker room these girls came brrrrrt splash! They could hardly wait to get in that water to train. Enthusiasm unbelievable. Little tiny five-yearold kids are coming out of those locker rooms. Brrrrrt splash! Do you know he's got those five year olds believing that they're going to break world's records when they grow up? Now get this, the record hasn't even been set yet! And they're going to break it. Now here is what staggers your mind. They do! What's the capacity of these little kids? Do you know what it is?

There were 35 world's records behind me, I trained for 25 years to break a world's record and never did. Oh, I got one, but I didn't get the big one. But here were 35 world's records behind me and George Haynes apologized. He said, "Three of the records are out of date, but we haven't been able to make the plaques fast enough." Can you imagine having a club like that where you can't make the plaques fast enough — to keep up with world's records? They're average kids who have a dream. They go out and they do it.

Here's this coach driving them, running up and down the side lines, "You can do three seconds better — put oat more — you can do it," Now you'd think those kids would hate the guy's guts, wouldn't you? "Lousy coach, driving us all the time." I stood next to that coach after that speech as those kids came up, tears streaming down their faces. Kissed him, hugged him. They thanked him from the bottom of their hearts for what he had done for them.

14 We've got the wrong psychology about our kids today. We think if we give them everything, cars, education, and clothes, they'll love us. It's not so. Young people only love their parents when their parents challenge th rn. A kid without a dream is a kid without purpose, without hope, without anything, he'll turn to hate. Those kids love a coach who makes them go.

Everyone wants to be motivated. That's when you discover your capacity.

I think of Brutus Hamilton, the great track coach from California, who wrote a littL) blue book in which he said, "These are the maximums. No one will ever go beyond these marks. This is how high a man can jump, and this is how fast he can run, and this is how strong he can be." Hardly a year went by before every one of those maximums were broken. In the sports world, records fall. Why? Because people discover new capacity. That's why these records are broken.

Now, you only discover capacity when you're reaching for an enormous goal. You only use , what capacity you do have when you're challenged.

Most people never discover their capacity because they never try for anything. I say this and I don't say it to be humble. But I reckon that there were over a million guys in America who could have beaten me in both Olympic games. A million guys! Stronger, faster, but they didn't believe they could win the Olympics. They had never gotten out on a track. They had never tried. Your capacity is only discovered, ladies and gentlemen, in challenge and the bigger the challenge, the bigger you become as a person. If you've got a little tiny goal, a little tiny challenge, you'll never make it.

I think of old Cassius Clay who used to say, "I'm the greatest." Now a lot of us didn't like that. We were hoping someone was going to knock it right down his mouth, you know. I disagree with Cassius on a lot of his political ideas, but boy, I've come to appreciate this thing. You know what Cassius said? "I'm the greatest. God's given me two of the fastest hands he ever gave any man. The best lungs, the best legs, and he's given me the best personality he could give anybody." Do you know how important it is to feel that way about yourself? To feel that you've got it. Most of us say, "Uh, no, I'm the worst. I can't do anything. I'm terrible." We wonder why we don't do

VESTN 1 It anything when we don't believe we can.

Can you imagine going into a boxing ring thinking, "Maybe I'm not the greatest." You gotta think you're the greatest. Like old Joe Namath of the Jets, "Man," he said, "We can beat 'em.

We're the best team." How would you like to go into a huddle and the quarterback comes in trembling and says, "(ice, fellas, really going to get stomped today." If you think that way, you've got to think that you are the greatest, and go for it, reach out for a challenge. You will be as big as your challenge.

I've played a game in the past twenty years of speaking with a lot of salesmen. You should write down on a piece of paper what you want to be in life, how rich you want to be, how many sales y ou want to make, what you want to be as a person; now write it down.

You'd be absolutely amazed in the course of twenty-three years how many people have come up to me and said, "Bob, I made my goal." Because they reached out for a goal, it was an enormous thing and I tell them, "Make it as impossible as you can." Because the greater the challenge, the greater you will be.

The average guy is a genius when he starts pushing the positive buttons. The capacity of a person comes to the fore when he becomes positive, when he thinks it can be done. When instead of thinking negatively, he starts to say I know I can do it. The power of positive thinking. I've been in sports for 25 years, ladies and gentlemen, and I've seen things you wouldn't believe.

I've seen young kids come along — fat, sloppy kids who say I'm going to be a champion. You look at them and say, "Kid, you can't be a champion, dunk apples 'cause you've got a lot of weight to hold you." That kid that I thought couldn't be a champion is Billie Jean Moffit, greatest woman tennis play:-r in the world. I remember being in Innsbruck, Austria; a little tiny, skinny-legged girl came skating up to me — great big eyes, tears running down her face — and she said, "Mr. Richards, I'm going to win a gold medal for America four years from now." Well, now what would you have said to a fourteen-year-old skinny girl whose ice skates weighed more than she did? What would you have said to her? I wish I could tell you I threw my arm around her and said, "Honey, you're going to be a champion." I

Wednesday, December 27, 1072 looked at her and thought, "Golly kid, if you were only bigger, you could do it." Two years later I went to the Broacimoor Hotel in Colorado Springs; I watched her skating, turning, Sal Chowing, triple Sal Chowing, the whole bit. Her legs were beginning to expand, she was stretching, see, she was getting strong, you know what I mean — four strong years from the time she said that to me — she won. The only gold medal that America won in the last Olympic games. Tears streamed down her face again, the Star Spangled Banner played, "I won it for my country, I won it for my mother, .I won it for myself." Don't tell me the power of positive thinking isn't there. I've seen average kids, fat, skinny, name it.

I've seen 'em get a dream, and I've seen their bodies transformed by that dream. I've seen the, go to the top, when they believed that they could do it. What happened to Willie Mays when Leo Durocher said, "You're going to be the greatest baseball player the world has ever known." By the way, he is five feet ten, weighs 175 pounds Rocky Marciano, the greatest heavyweight who ever lived — five feet ten, 185 pounds. These are average guys who get motivated. They believe they can do it. They push the positive buttons.

They become champions. But if you want to know the secrets to success, an average guy, start pushing the positive buttons. Believe you can do it; and you can. If you don't think so, let me leave you with a story.

I went to give a speech in Boston not too long ago, to a life insurance group, and just before I got up to speak, they wheeled up onto the platform, a man on a stretcher. They had just taken him out of the iron lung.

His name was Dick Mann. And they wheeled him up in front of this microphone — and speaking like this — he said, "I'm so glad to be here. It is hard for me to talk, but I got something I want to tell you. Every dream I've ever wanted in my life, I've been able to achieve." Can you believe this? Flat on his back, crippled, and iron lung every night — talking about achieving every dream. He talked about the TOYM program here in St. Paul, Minnesota, and he talked about Ed. White, and Pete Conrad and Bill Moyers, aria some of the great men, bow they've been able to achieve their dream in America.

He said, for example, "I wanted to

Wednesday, December 2'7, 1972 write a book." He said, "I tape recorded every day for a year. Eleven tapes.

When they were through, I wanted to hear them played back. They were all blank." He said, "It's hard for me to talk you know, but we started over.

Today my book is published. I wanted to be a speaker. I've given two hundred sp:eches in the last year. I wanted to be president cf a club, and I'm president. Every dream I've ever wanted, I've been able to achi pve." And then he said, "One of the TOYM winners was a guy named Herman who wrote 'Auntie Mame.' The basic theme of that is life is a banquet. Most of us are starving to death." And then he paused for a minute and he said, "Every day is so exciting for me. I love life. It's a banquet. Go out and live it and partake of it. When you do, think of me." Crippled, beaten down, he has gone to the top. What can you and I do? Average Joes with legs and arms and lungs and brains, if we'll use the great capacity we've got.

FROM THE LODGE YOUTH LEADERS LODGE NO. 153, LA SALLE Dear Readers: On December 3, 1972, I was elected and accepted the job of youth leader for the La Salle Youth Club. I will try to do my best.

December 4, our youth held a regular monthly meeting, including a party — invited guests, trimming of a tree and going out to sing Christmas carols.

December 15, the youth were invited to my house. I treated thtlin to hot dogs. A door prize was given to Teresa Nowlin.

The youth then made Christmas decorations for doors to be taken to Ganado to the Care Inn and the hospital. We also took cookies to Care Inn. We sang Christmas carols at both the Care Inn and at the hospital.

The youth really enjoyed themselves.

sr.isT YOUTH CLUB HELD A CHRISTMAS DINNERR. Victoria — The SPJST Youth Club held a Christmas dinner honoring their parents and guests. The party was held at the Houston Natural Gas Company in the Hospital'ty Room.

James Vai,ex, president of the youth club was master of ceremonies. Kerdonna Blair led the grace before the Christmas dinner was served.

Mr. Ed Sralla, a guest speaker, director of SPJST District 6 of Edna made an inspiring speech on the meaning of Christmas and on tomorrow's leaders.

The youth presented a program of Christmas carols. The youth were directed by Mrs. Marie Harrell and Mrs. Henrietta Vanek.

The party was concluded at the Christmas tree. The youth exchanged gifts. They gave their parents and guests a gift which consisted of some of their craft work, the y made at their monthly meetings.

Mrs. Henrietta. Vanek, the club's youth leader was presented a lovely gift given by Kenneth Huehlefeld, one of the members of the youth club. She expressed her thanks and appreciation to the club, members and friends.

Afterward, we had a turkey supper.

The members of the youth club said a little part. After saying their parts, the youth club sang a few songs and exchanged gifts.

I'd like to thank the ladies who baked the turkeys and made the sweets. We all enjoyed it. The meeting was then adjourned. Our next meeting is January 3rd at 7 p.m.

16 LODGE NO. 32, VICTORIA Dear Readers, The Victoria SPJST Youth Club held its first Christmas party. It was held at the Houston Natural Gas Building.

The party was called to order by James Vanek, master of ceremonies to welcome everybody to the Christmas party.

Kerdonna Blair then led everyone in the grace. After we ate, the youth club went on stage to sing five carols for the parents and guests. The master of ceremonies then introduced the guest speaker, Mr. Sralla, District VI Director, who gave a speech to the youth and their parents. After the fine speech by Mr. Sralla, we went to the Christmas tree. The youth presented the gifts to their parents, gifts which were made at an earlier meeting The parents seemed real pleased. The youth then traded gifts among themselves.

On December 20 and 21, we went caroling to people's houses.

A reminder that we will hold our next meeting on January 7, 1973 at the Boy's Club, 800 E. Pine Street, from 2 to 4 p.m. The doors will open at 1:30 p.m.

LODGE NO. 153, LA SALLE Dear Members, Our youth club held their monthly meeting on December 4, at the Vanderbilt Catholic Church Hall. The meeting was called to order on time

by Marilyn Vincik.

The prayer was led by Chryle Wayne and Jeanette Hlavaty led us in the motto. The pledge of allegiance was led by Lisa Miller. Melany Drastata read the minutes which were approved as read. The treasury report was also given.

We discussed plans once more about going to the Care Inn in Ganado. We would take cookies and also sing Christmas carols.

The meeting was followed by our Christmas party. We played a variety of games. Each member brought one guest. We then went Christmas caroling.

LODGE NO. 66, WACO Dear Readers, Our last meeting was held on December 17th. State Youth Director, Dorothy Massey and SL President Nick Morris and his family were invited guests attending this meeting. Mr. Morris installed all of the new officers in our lodge for 1973.

After this meeting the youth presented their annual Christmas program. Julie Slovak and Cindy Slovak sang "0 Hcly Night", accompanied on the piano by Pattie Stanisla y. Steven Stanislav played "Silent Night" and Cindy Slovak played "0 Come All Ye Faithfi," which ieveryone Sang. A nativity scene was presented by the younger youth.

We also had a youth club meeting in which we planned to go caroling on December 21st. The youth are also selling Christmas candy to raise money for our club.

After the meeting, a, delicious buffet supper was served!

Fraternally, Pattie Stanislav LODGE NO. 66, WACO Dear Members and Friends, December 1, 1972, the Lodge 66 Youth Club entered a float in the annual Waco Santa Claus parade. Our float was entitled "Christmas in Czechoslovakia."

We would like to thank all the youth who came out and helped us decorate and get ready for the parade. Also, we would like to thank Davis Iron Works, Inc., for furnishing the truck. Many thanks to Mrs. Maxine Sefcik for trying to get us a Czech Christmas record.

December 17 was Lodge 66's annual Christmas party. Our guests were SL President Nick Morris and his family, SYD Mrs. Dorothy Massey, Honorary President Edward and Mrs. Marek, and Mrs. Maxine Sefcik. After the meeting, our youth put on a short Christmas program which ended with Santa coming with gifts for all the children.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution Committee, in behalf of the entire membership of Lodge No. 66, Waco wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother, LOUIS J. HAZDA, SR., who passed away Saturday, November 18, 1972. Brother Kazda was pronounced dead on arrival at West Cornmunity Hospital, after he apparently suffered a heart attack. He was 77 years of age.

Requiem mass was celebrated Monday, November 20, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Mary's Church of the Assumption West, Texas, with Rev. Earl Hedberg as celebrant. Rosary was recited Sunday at 5:45 p.m., at the Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Brother Kazda was born in Czechoslovakia. He came to the United States in 1914, at the age of 19. He owned a cafe and meat market in Abbott for several years and later worked as a meat processor and butcher for Pavlas' Market, and for Nemecek Bros. He married Stacy Patak in November, 1944.

Mrs. Kazda died September 25, of this year.

He was a member of St. Mary's Church of the Assumption and SPJST Lodge No. 66, in Waco.

Survivors are two sons, Louis Kazda of Abbott, and Walter Kazda of Bellvue, Wash.; two stepsons, Clement Karlik of Kermit, and Wilford Karlik of Fort Worth; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were members of SPJST Lodge No. 66, Waco. They were Frank Parma, Emil Hanus, James Pavlicek, Louis Macha, Ray Moore and George Trefny.

17 unable to enlighten us as to who were the first people to reach the territory of today's Moravia. In fact no one seems to know even when they appear• d on the scene. Various estimates put their arrival anywhere between thirty and forty thousand years ago. One thing is quiet sure, though. Those who were the first to come, as well as those who followed later on, liked what they found in Moravia. There is hardly a period of human culture that would not have left its imprint on the Moravian soil. Yet we have hardly passed the threshold in archeological discoveries. Little more than small fragments of promising discoveries have been unearthed at various places so far thanks to the painstaking efforts of archeologists.

More than any part of the Czechoslovak Republic, Moravia used to be sort of crossroads for countless generations. In times long past, it was a meeting place of travellers moving in the south-north and north-south directions. Undoubtedly, whole tribes used to pass through the territory of Moravia, beading westward. Being rich in game — even sabre - toothed tigres used to live there — — Moravia attracted the cave-men of whom many traces have been discovered in the course of archeological exploration, especially at Predmosti near the town of Pterov and at Btramberska Mammoth hunters settled in the foothills of Palava Highlands. Enjoying a relatively high degree of prosperity, they found time for cultural exploits.

It was they who created the famed statuettes of Venus as well as the world rarity: man's head carved from mammoth tusk.

If nothing else, the great variety of decorative patterns on ceramic ware discOverted by aitcheologfsts all over Moravia attests to the fact that numerous different communities used to live in the territory of today's Czechoslovakia. In fact, an entire historical period was named after the Jelrn'ov community. The bronze age provided us in Moravia with a sort of evidence not to be found even in the best museums anywhere in the world: the funeral of a man of high rank at Byei skala (Bull's Rock).

Fresh evidence is being constantly unearthed attesting to the fact that the Celts built several large oppida (fortified towns) in central Moravia.

The Roman Xth Legion also moved

18 its fortified Istrongholds, as 'far as southern Moravia. One of them was discovered at Mugov.

A few centuries later, the first powerful Slavic state in the territory of today's Czechoslovakia flowered in the area roughly bordered by the rivers Morava and Dyje — the Great Moravian Empire. Thanks to the fact, so many different and wealthy cultures existed in Moravia, it is no wonder that river deposits and chance discoveries made in the course of earth-moving operations have yielded vast archeological treasures.

However, archeologists are busy unearthing not only ancient settlements, towns and churches. They provide us also with other evidence of the varied human activities in ancient times still covered with a thick veil. Skillfully cut tools of flint, traces of fireplilces in which the ancient people used to burn coal, iron foundries of the Halstadt culture, lovely gold jewellery of the Great Moravian Empire princes, chiselled belts, spurs of bronze and gold decorated by masks resembling human faces...

Millions of pairs of human hands helped to shape Moravia and passed the result of their work to us as precious heritage. Even the tiny portion discovered so far has gained worldwide fame. Archeologists, the discoverers of ancient human cultures, are in a sense, just like vine growers.

They also believe that "the older the better and rarer."

Using tiny fragments of , evidence, scholars piece together the picture' of times long gone by •and deeds covered with a thick veil of centuries. The early stages of. the history of the Czech and Slovak nations are in many respects enveloped in mystery. Very few written records are available. There fore, archeology must play a role of prime importance. In other words — we must rely on digging. Let the earth speak its own natural language.

Indeed, it has told us a great deal about the foundation of the first common state of Czechs and Slovaks, the birth of the Great Moravian Empire, about the events that preceded its foundation as well as the manner in which it broke up. Science know how to read the message hidden in an old brick, the chemical composition of mortar ; the layout of ancient struaures built of stone, a piece of wooden bridge pier, a gold

VESTNfiC jewel as well as human bones, preserved deep under the surface since the year 600. Their work calls for a great deal of patience: In the course of sixteen long years of exploration at Mikuleice near the town of Hodonin, the archeologists managed to complete their digging operations in only two per cent of the entire area of the prince's town, well fortified and inhabited by an armed body of men, with a number of artisans' w or k s h o p s.

Two per cent and yet the discoveries have already cast new light on the early stages of national history ...

Veils Are Getting Thinner The Archeological Institute of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in Brno has opened a new pavilion at Mikuleice, housing a permanent exposition of the discoveries made during the past several years. There are vessels, swords, clasps, bat-ends, spurs, gold. jewelery, per dants, combs, axes, pails, sickles, ridge-ploughs, querns, millstones, jingle bells (still jingling), buttons, coins, dice, two well-preserved 'wooden boats (nine and ten metres long respectively) , and even a pair of copper tweezers still in good shape, apparently used for beard plucking by a well-to do person.

The findings unearthed by archeologists so far may be summarized as follows: since the second half of the sixth century there existed at Mikulcice a large settlement of non-agrarian character. It was dominated by a set of fortifications with the prince's castle in the centre. In the innermost section of this Great Moravian Empire castle may be seen the foundations of church buildings as well as remainders of walls of a rectangular palace 23 metres in length and 9 meters in width. The church No. 3, a three-nave basilica •, is the largest Great Moravian church structure unearthed so far. In the vicinity of church buildings and in stone tombs and graves (there are over 1.500 of them) archeologists discovered rare swords, gilded spurs, remainders of leather belts with decorated b e I tends and insignia of the ruling stratum of the society. One of the belt-ends shows the figure of a man holding in one hand a banner, a symbol of secular power, and a horn in his other hand, as a symbol of anointment, i.e. a symbol of ecclesiastical power. Scholars believe the luxurious belt, dating from the year 825, might have belonged to

The strongly fortified castle, ten church buildings (unearthed so far), etc., have made many scholars wonder whether Mikuleice was not the location of the "ancient city of Prince Rostislav" mentioned in the Fulda Chronicle as early as in 869. It is no coincidence that on the basis of objective archeological findings Mikuleice has been declared a national cultural monument; widely regarded as a place that played a significant role, in the early stages of the ancient ancestors of Czechs and Slovaks.

Fire Rules for the Aged gi The aftermath of fire too often leaves the elderly as a tragic statistic. This can be prevented, however, if they are made aware of a few brief rules to follow.

• First of all, the aged should be familiar with all exits and know two plans of escape. If possible, they should sleep on the first floor or near an easy way out.

• All stairways should be clear of objects to prevent falling.

• They should be instructed never to smoke while in bed.

• The elderly should wear firesafe clothing when around an open flame.

• They should have easy access to a telephone, with emergency numbers at hand.

• Appropriate fire extinguishers, Listed by Underwriters' Laboratories, should be within reach, and the aged should be shown how to use them.

They can also help themselves by planning ahead ; others can help by developing emergency plans for them.
