StriVing for ' improvement Camp clays, Mir YADs, -and . other' 'summer activities are just about at an end, and soon be -back to school for thousands of our youngsters everywhere. From all reports, our camping projects were enjoyed by all those who went.

Here and there we hear of some difficulties experienced in one phase or another and that some people were a bit unhappy about the way certain things worked out, but in a program of this size and scope, there. arebound to be .same snags and flaws. We must not desp air and throw up our hands anguish over these .setbacks. Instead, we must work harder on how to avoid these flaws and strive to improve the program all the way around. We don't stop our educational processes just because some of our modern "prodnets" are not what we expected. We

don't stop having free elections because some irregularity was discovered.

Banks have not ceased to exist because a bank president in New Jersey was found to be dishonest.

We must carry on and work at improving our programs. With a common understanding and common sense approach we cannot help but succeed.

How are your sore feet . . and your sunburn?

• • Three Biggest Annoyances. Countless surveys have been made, mostly by teachers, club , leaders, and people in similar positions, about the attributes that annoy people most. They all come up with just about the same conconclusions. The three top annoyances or complaints are: I.) an unpleasant voice, 2) no sense of humor, and 3) the dogmatic attitude that 'I'm always right; you're always wrong.'

These three top annoyances probably prevail in our homes, in business situations, or just about anywhere people associate with one another. There are women who will spend a fortune on their physical ,appearance and ruin it all with a harsh, demanding voice.

It's pretty hard to get along these days without a sense of humor. This doesn't mean laughing it up at things that aren't very funny, but if we can't laugh at ourselves now and then or take a bit of ribbing in the right manner, we're going to live a lonely and bitter life. People can put up with some very unattractive faces if the person is fun to be around and can make them shed their troubles for a little While. This also does not mean you have to be a back-slapper, but it does mean that we should be willing to take light things lightly and not treat everything as if the fate of the world hinged on every decision. Finally, if you've sat down on a tack and had a good laugh at yourself, you've gotten the message. You're IN. As to the third fault, we can never expect to learn from each other if we elo$e our minds to what is being said.

Youth Club of the Year, State Winners. This is the teen youth club of Lodge 8'6, Houston. They won in their district (V) and went on to capture the title at State. Sister Marlene Caraway is the teen youth leader, and is seated front and center. Joan Zalmanek is president.

This Wonderful World. Louis (Satchino Armstrong's current and very touching and inspiring hit, "It's a Wonderful World,'' has a beautiful message lior all of us. We thought of the lyrics the other clay when we came across a letter from a reader in one of our large Texas dailies. It went something like this: "Not one complaint do I have today.

I am just thinking of the good things I see and have in life — the dawn coming through my window, birds singing in the trees, the aroma of honeysuckle around my house, little children getting ready for play.

"Then on my way to work, at the hospital, to hear a newborn baby take its first breath in this world. That's life ---- a good life. I would like to feel this way always. God has been good to me."

Edgar Hoover BROTHER EMIL HORELICA COMMENDS TRIP TO CZECHOSLOVAKIA Mr. Emil Horelica of Houston (member of Lodge 88), recently returned from a trip to Czechoslovakia. On a recent visit to West, Bro. Ilorclica drui)Pcd in for a chat.

Among other things. t ie stated that his recent trip to Czechw-;lovalzta was very enjo yable and that everyone should try to make at least one trip to that country. Conditions in that country are very relaxed now in all areas of activity. There is complete freedom of movement about the country and people are expressing themselves openly on just about every subj ect.

The people are very friendly and hospitable and aecommoda ling. Their customs are fascinating. ""W tether you visit with your family or ;::1;a.y at a hotel, it should be a pleasure all the way," states Bro. Horelica. "And last but not least, you get more for your American clonal's." He highly recorn-Mends the planned flight from Houston to Prague, non-stop, taking shape in October. He will be glad to refer interested parties to the proper channels in Houston. The price is an unheard-of-bargain.

Newsbriefs Brother Hugo Schefeak of Taylor brought his relatives from Czechoslovakia and Gary, Indiana by for a brief visit to the printshop. They were his sister, Blazena Sefcakova and his aunt, Olga (Seleak) Janik, both of Zlin, eirctio.,:lovakia, and the latter's son, Edward Janik of Gary.

• Mr. Gilbert Krause 57, passed away in St. Jude Hospital in Brenham on Aug. 6th. Burial was in the Imm. Con ception Church Cemetery, at Industry; Brother Krause was a member of SPJST Lodge 68, Nelsonville.

• Frank J. Vitek, 85, passed away in the SPJST Rest Home in Taylor on August 1st. Burial was in the Granger Brethren Cemetery. Brother Vitek was the first male resident of the SPJST Rest Home. He was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 20, Granger; • • A colored post card from Japan informs us that the John F. Chupicks are vacationing in that country with the Shrine Oriental Tour. So far, they have visited Tokyo, Taipei, Honolulu.

Hong Kong, and other interesting places. "It is a very wonderful and interesting experience," write the Chupicks.

Lydia E. Tomanek, 46, passed away at her home in Mansfield on August 8.

Sister Tomanek was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 154, Fort Worth.

• • Joseph F. Malik, 85, passed away August 12. Interment was in the Memorial Park Cemetery in Victoria.

The annual Pavelka reunion will be held Sunday, Sept. 1st, at the SPJST Hall in Elk. Descendants of Joseph and Marie Pavelka will gather around 11 a.m. Everyone is asked to bring a basket lunch — enough for lunch and supper. Plates, bread, napkins, and silverware will be furnished. LETTERS LODGE NO. 81, SWEET HOME Dear Members, It was decided that our next monthly meeting is to be held on the 4th Sunday of August, and the September meeting and social is also going to be held on the 4th Sunday so members, please take note of our change of meetings for the next tWo months.

Dear Readers, On Aug. 11, at 3:05 p.m., Lodge 66 President Emil Hanus called our regular monthly meeting to order.

After a silent moment of prayer for our departed member, Gary Lynn Havranek, our meeting proceeded with the roll call of officers; all were present.

Wednesday, August 21, 1908 were read and approved after two corrections. Brother Johnnie Gaidusek gave his financial report, followed by Sister Libbie Parma and the youth report. She reported that the youth seemed to enjoy the camp. The Princess Ball for Lodge 66 is going fine.

Keep up the good work, girls, The youth el Lb donated watermelons and folk ,,Oingers for one night's entertainment at the . camp. The birthday cake was baked by Patricia Stanislav, 'The only members known to be sick were Brother Frank Miller and Brother.

Jolla Kutni; both were able to be at the meeting with us. New members are.

Ronald Eugene Janek and Dorothy Anna Chapman.

All members were asked to attend the State YAD in Houston; also to be present at our next meeting to help celebrate our 62nd Anniversary. The Entertainment Committee is lo make all the plans for that clay, Chris Spence was thanked for putting a lock on the back door. Visitors at our meeting were Frank Prasifka, Keith Tadlock, Kathleen Vrba, and Johnnie Krizan.

Brother Frank Prasifka gave us a brief talk on the trip that is being planned for a tour of Czechoslovakia and other European countries.

Door prizes were won by Jannette Smith, adult, and Mike Galler and Tana Kutni, youth.

The meeting then was adjourned, followed by a program for the youth and adult members.

The Lodge 66 Youth Club was started 10 years ago. In honor of their fine progress the mother lodge presented the youth club with an anniversary cake. Barbara Gaidusek, as president of the youth club, thanked the mother lodge for the cake. Beverly Gaidusek and Jean Spence were recognized as being past, youth club members who are now taking an active part in the mother lodge.

Brother Johnnie Krizan was our guest speaker for the clay, invited by the youth club. His speech was one that kept everyone's attention, from the youngest to the oldest. We would like to once again thank him for such a fine job.

The youth club served ice cream after sapper with the cake. Thanks.

LODGE NO. 1'7, NEW TABOR Dear Members, New Tabor SPIST Lodge No. 17 held its monthly meeting Aug. 11. The meeting was opened by Bro. Vavra, A resolution was read for Sister Minnie Ginza' by Bro. Skrabanek.

The nuitding committee was not able to give a report on the financial estimate. It's a very busy season for some of the committeemen.

Our congratulations go to our trict I King, James Schwierzke, Queen Florence Vavra; also to all youth who participated and won first place at the District I YAD. The meeting was adjourned until Sept. 8 at 2 p.m.

Dear Fellow Members: The 20th Convention held in Dallas last June approved a new Supreme Lodge home in which there is to be a museum and archives room, I have had the pleasure to see the Saline County Historical Society Museum at Dorchester, Nebr., last August, and mere words just cannot describe the beauty and educational features of such an establishment. You would haVe to see this with your own eyes and even then you wonder if you are seeing what your eyes tell you you are looking at. While there I expressed my interest in museums to Mrs. Rosa Dusanek, the secretary of that society, and I recently received a copy of their yearly NeWs Letter. Wednesday, August 21, 1968 Open Sundays and Holidays 1 to 5 p.m.

Twelve years ago, July 1956, this organization became a statistic on record with the State of Nebraska. This structure is pledged to maintain its high position in the Nebraskaland parade of the future.

The annual meeting was held August 1967 at the museum building at Dorchester. A new slate of officers was elected: president, Kenneth D. Moneypenney; vice president, Henry Slepicka; secretary, Mrs. Rosa Dusanek; treasurer, Arthur J. Benne. Others: Harold Cerny, Roger Zabel, Carl Wilkens, Mrs. James L. Knoche, Alva N. Murray, Mrs. Ladimore I'apik, Mrs. Harold Sack, Frank J. Pisar, Mrs. JoSeph E. Rezabek, Longin Prokop.

The third Sunday afternoon in September, an hour's program Of pioneer history and music was enjoyed by 165 visitors. Chairs donated by a church at Crete accommodated more visitors.

Saline County taxpayers have reason to be prOud. Indebtedness on the present museum building was erased in December 1967. A new building, same dimensions, is- contemplated as soon as tax levy money accumulates to merit a bank loan.

Forty seedling trees were wrapped with newspaper last fall to prevent rabbit damage. Fifty red maple nuts planted at that time are peeping through mulch. The seasonal occanation by volunteers deals with cultivation, irrigation, and mowing.

Nine used showcases were added to the already crowded situation in the museum, when a hardware store discontinued business. Removing cAA, replacing broken glass, adding 6-inch bases, more items are on display for better viewing. We now have forty shOwcases. With only the framed glas8 front to work with, a wardrobe was built by adding five dimensions.

Clothing formerly packed in a plastic clothesbag, is suitably displayed.

On March, a spinning wheel demonstration by Roger Zabel and ropemaking by Theodore Heckman attracted 60 visitors.

Buckingham District 35 school house, Purchased in 1962, was sadly hi need of renovation. This spring the low bidder, Sack LuMbet Company, Dorchester, placed it on a cernent block foundation. It is surprising what a coat of white paint can do! The cost was $1,200, with payment made from tax levy source. The county coal

It is imossible to enumerate all items donated. Here are only a few: Joseph Brabec donated a section of wall, Made in 1866, of sand, red soil and hay, left to cure in the sun and used to build the farm home southwest of Crete. A complete 1908 McCormick binder, which was sheckled all these years, stands out in the weather for lack of suitable storage, donated by Henry Wendorff. A 1900 New Departure" (Puttee) tongueless cultivator found in the timber on the Welsch farm, was restored to the original.

A cabinet type phonograph, 1938-39, purchased at a rural schoolhouse sale, fits in with the melodeon, piano, organd and piano-organ, in the music section of the museum. An 1881 wall desk used in the first bank in Dorchester, later in the post office, is now used as a registration desk at the museum. Dcirchester Volunteer Fire Department 1926 equipment is stored in Mrs, Dusanek's garage. Many other bulky units are stored there to ease display space in the museum. New books used for identifying items to catalog donations to the Society include: "American Antiques" by Mrs. Joseph E. Rezabek, and "Old Glass" by Mrs. „Ladd J. Skocpol.

Appointment by letter or telephone brought by bus, adult, 4-H, Sunday School and grade school groupS, fifteen .to forty in number. They came from Wilber, Friend, Willigan, Lincoln, Omaha, and Local 170.

The recorded attendance on Sunday .afternoon continues on a stady in-crease, year by year: so does the total in hours (2000) by volunteer supervisors.

The Society lists 92 members of whom ten maintain 5-year memberships. Annual clues are $1, payable in August.

Recently made a trip to South Texas and we hit on the idea of counting out-of-state license plates. From Karnes City to San Marcos we ccidnted a total of 16, but from San Marcos to Waco we counted 306 out-ofstate cars and these were from 28 states, With proper signs on the outskirts of Temple, even if only a third of these cars would stop to see the museum, it would mean a tremendous amount of free advertising for our SPJST and the Czech people of Texas, fully realize that this traffic is greater this year clue to HemisFair San Antonio (which, I was told by one of Waeo's traffic volunteers, numbers as much as two thousand cars per day froin practically every state in the union). This traffic will always be heavy through this area due to people traveling to old Mexico, and the Graf Coast, Rio Grande VUlley, and other points of interest in our fair state of Texas. I sincerely hope that all of us will get behind our museum and make it not only the best in Texas but the entire nation as well. Bro. Nick Morris has collected over 1,000 Czech books which will serve as the nucleus of our Czech library.

I would be very happy to hear from anyone who would have suitable relics to offer for our museum when it is built and ready to receive them. Kook through your attics, make a list of the relics and heirlooms you would like to place in our SPJST museum when it is completed and when the time comes I will advise you when and where to ship your donation. You or your family will receive full credit and it will be safely preserved forever.

It is not too early to start working on this project NOW, so let's get busy and start the ball rolling.

Dear Readers, This will be brief for this time, with a promise to do better next time, Our meeting on Sunday, Aug. 4th, was well attended and much business trans-acted. However, we do ask our members to try to increase the attendance and take a more active part to make our lodge larger and create more activities.

The youth held their meeting prior to the adult, meeting and showed much interest iii planning and making preparations to go to camp, I do wish to thank the ladies who so generously donated pastries.

The band that will be in the spotlight is one that has many songs to fit the occasion; a person who has played with the popular Six Fat Dutchmen, and this is none other than Norman Barnes and The Lamplighters. Make your reservations early because this is a first for us and something special and different at Sokol. Our committees have been working on this with Norman Barnes, Helmut Moll our advisor, and the publicity director. The date will he on Saturday, Sept. 7th.

Reports DISTRICT II JULY SALES The 68 sales for $140,500 brought our 1968 total to 396 members for $858,500 of insurance. We certainly appreciate the efforts of each of you persistent organizers.

Our top organizer for July was Bro. Jerry Mikulas of t Seaton Lodge 47, with 6 sales for $29,500 of insurance.

Last year, remember, James Pavlicek ran away with it, but this year he has sold only $3,000 of insurance. Get with it! One of you organizers in district HI will win the expense-paid trip to Austin to the TPC, paid for by the Suprmee Lodge. There will also be a surprise from your District Organizer!

I am planning to have some meetings in the near future, as soon as I can secure places and coordinate the dates with Bro. Hejny's schedule.

If we could write our quota by the end of November a new record for District 5 would be established. Up to now we have written $2,011,500, which gives us two-thirds of our quota. Just a minimum of $250,000 for four consecutive months and we have it made by the end of November. As I know you brother and sister organizers, it can be done.

If so, then I promise you a Christmas surprise for all the active organizers.

District Five carries almost half of the insurance written in the state. I am very proud of you brother and sister organizers for a wonderful job up to now and may the colors fly high by the end of November!

After all the cooling rains we had, we must now suffer with the terrific heat over 90 degrees every day and no cooling off period in sight. But don't let it interfere with your progress and use the air conditioners wherever you must, and let's go for

Organizers from 10 lodges contributed to the growth of our SPJST. Sister Evelyn Mikeska placed herself in first place with $38,500 of insurance and has second place with 26 applications written.

Sister Della Kadlecek holds second place with 27 applications written and occupies third place with $31,000 of insurance.

Brother Louis Hanus, for the first time, placed himself among the first three places mentioned each month.

Brother Hanus captured second place with $35,000 insurance written. Congratulations!

Brother Emil Boreilea, absent for -three weeks visiting Czechoslovakia, managed to capture third place with 12 applications. All four organizers are from Lodge 88.

I wish to thank each and everyone tor a splendid job for the month of July. Let's see if we can reach our quota by the end of November.

The District V fall meeting will be held October 6. Lodges desiring to host the fall meeting should contact any District V officer. o The fall meeting of District VI will be held Sunday, Sept. 29. Host lodge will be Lodge No. 30, Taiton.

District VII fall meeting will be held Sunday, Oct. 13th. Lodge No. 56, Corpus Christi, will host the meeting.

—SPJSTCZECH DAY IN HOUSTON SPJST Lodge No. 88, Houston, is having a big Czech Day celebration on Sunday, October 27th, in commemmoration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the First Czechoslovak Republic.

CZECH DAY AT THE STATE FAIR Czech Day at the State Fair will be held this year on Sunday, October 6, the first Sunday in October.

DEADLINES The deadline for all material to be included in the next issue of the Vestnik is Saturday noon. The same holds true for all advertising. Pictures that are to appear in the next issue must be in West no later than Thursday. Do not mail via air mail within the state!

Remember to enclose postage if you want your pictures returned. —Editor In a memo to mailers issued by the PO Dept., it was stated that more than 50 railroad cars carrying mail are destroyed by fire each year. A rash of burnings have also been recorded recently in Star Route trucks. Fires on mail transporters can be disasterous.

PROCEEDINGS OF THE XXth GENERAL CONVENTION, SPJST, HELD IN THE BAKER HOTEL IN DALLAS, TEXAS, JUNE 10 — 14, 1968.

More Corrections Try as one will, mistakes are bound to happen. In last week's installment we made Bro. Ernest Hanka a member of Lodge No. "888". It should have been 88. Brother Arnold Vrla is a member of Lodge 130 in Dallas, not 135 in Ennis.

The name of Norma Pavelka has also been added to those serving on the Insurance Committee (Lodge 66). All corrections have been made for the final book version of the Proceedings.

Dr. Jack Dabbs, Dr. Joe Skrivanek and his brother, Dr. John Skrivanek were introduced to the delegation.

Br. Jerry Valchar, President of RVOS, was introduced and addressed the as sembly briefly. Br. Dennis Bartek, See-, retary of RVOS, was also recognized Br. Johnnie Gaidusek, director of RV OS, was also recognized.

ARTICLE 55 Br. Nick Morris (66) suggested "flu-' ently" be used instead of "perfectly" in by-laws in Article 55. Accepted.

Br. Ernie Hanka (88) stated that 3members on the Publication Committee is not enough.

Sister Frances Olexa (88) agreed with Br. Hanka, stating that 5 members, would be better and it would not take, much longer to take care of the let-, ters.

Br. Louis Hanus (88) moved that the Publication Committee be increased to 5 members. Seconded by Sister Lillian Finn (88). Passed.

Br. Jarda Cerny (111) asked what happened to his recommendation of a' new committee on the jurisdiction of Supreme Lodge officers.

Br. Sid Pokladnik (84) moved to table: this motion indefinitely.

Br. Ernie Hanka (88) discussed compensation for district youth directors, and suggested that this be referred to committee on Salary and Donations.

Vote taken and passed that article be referred to Committee on Salary and Donations.

ARTICLE 63 (e) Br. John Murphy (92) questioned wording "to nominate" which was clarified. It was pointed out that only nominations were made in the districts, and confirmed by the convention delegation.

ARTICLE 45 — g — was brought up for reconsideration.

ACTUARY'S REPORT TO THE 1968 SPJST CONVENTION The Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas is to be commended for its efficient insurance operation as

VASTNf K evidenced by recent annual statements.

Sizable gains from operations have developed a level of surplus which is very adequate relative to the liabilities of the insurance company. The presence of an adequate surplus has not produced any laxity on the part of the Supreme Lodge as to their responsibility of providing both sound insurance coverage and an efficient Supreme Lodge operation as evidenced by proposed actions by the Supreme Lodge to improve its service to members.

This report is to give you a general idea of proposed action by the Supreme Lodge relative to the amount of surplus which has been accumulated and relative to future gains from operations.

The ability of an insurance company to pay anticipated claims as they come due is measured by both its surplus level and strength of certificate reserves. The Supreme Lodge proposes to adopt a reserve basis -Which is stronger than that in current use in three ways — one is decreasing the interest assumption to 3% per annum, a second is valuirig all issues before 1985 on the net level premium valuation method, and the third is the use of mortality table for issues before 1965 that is more representative of the mortality experience of the company. The adoption of this reserve basis will increase the certificates reserves by approximately $800,000, thus reducing surplus by the same amount. The reduction in surplus and an increase in reserves does not impair the company's financial position but does give strength to the ability of the company to pay certificate benefits as they become due.

Also the strengthening of the reserves is done for the benefit of those who helped contribute the surplus that will be used for reserve strengthening, Which is an equitable approach. Such reserve strengthening will be made as of December 31, 1968.

The Supreme Lodge has been aware of the sizable gains from operations during recent years. As the Order is a non-profit erganization, it is desirable to have a closer level of income and benefits paid to provide full value for premiums paid b y members, Reducing the premium levelS would bring premium income and benefits closer, but this is not a desirable approach for many reasons, such as long term adequacy of premium levels. Thus the Current gain from operations must be used

13 in a way to benefit members of the Order, preferably in an equitable manner that is used in a manner to benefit each member in the proportion to which each member provided the gain from operations. Dividends can be determined in such a manner that the amount of the dividend for a certificate is based on the actual earnings for the year on that certificate, making an equitable distribution of earnings. The primary sources of earnings on the certificates are savings from expenses, savings from mortality experience, and excess interest earnings. Currently the lodges are receiving 6% of collected premiums which represents a large part of the expense saving during the past few years. I might add here that before any increase in the 6% to lodges is made, it should be determined just what level the actual gain from expenses has been in order that no more than the gain from expenses is paid out as "a dividend from expense saving" to the lodges. Thus the largest part of the gain from operations has been from mortality experience earnings and excess interest earnings on certificate reserves. The Supreme Lodge has made preliminary studies to determine the practicability of a dividend program. It appears that the program may be begun as early as January, 1969, and if authorization by the Order is given to the Supreme Lodge, every effort will be made to institute of dividends as soon as it is possible and practical. I might point out that it is possible to estimate closely the dividends which will be paid during a calendar year, based on a given dividend scale, and the directors thus can. approve or disapprove a' dividend scale depending on whether it will produce the appropriate level of total dividends relative to the current operations and financial condition of the Order.

Si'. Nick Morris (66) stated this was brought up in the Waco Convention and praised Br. Fr, Steiner for his explanation then that it was an inherent right: which cannot be denied any in ember, Br. Louis Harms (88) spoke against, saying that we should not deprive the lodges and the districts of these good workers. fir. Jos goblin, Jr. (2(i) spoke against it, saying that it was unfair to our directors and was taking away our rights.

Br. Jarda Cerny (111) said that this would deprive the members back home of their right to pick their delegates.

Br. John Kutni (66) made a motion we delete 63-i in its entirety. Seconded

by Louis Hanus (88) and deleted.

Chairman Sablatura convened the convention at 8:30 a, m.

Chairman Sablatura appointed Br. A. L. Boudny (29), Br. Edwin Kovar (29) and Br. Hugo Schefeak, to represent the delegation at funeral of Br. Rudolph Troubil.

Minute-s of previous afternoon session were read by Secretary Tillie Helmeamp.

Br, Otto Harms (66) made motion to accent minutes with corrections.

Br. Henry F. Vitek (20) seconded, and passed.

Sister Marlene Carawa y (88) made motion that we allow State Youth Director James Janousek to elaborate-on an y matters that may need further clarification in regard to youth coin, mittee report.

Sister Marlene Caraway (88) Chairman of Youth Committee, -gave youth committee report.

State Youth Director,- Br. James Ja,uousek, gave surveys relating to permanent youth camp that confirmed that the youth favored a permanent camp, :rather than alternating camp and tours, Br. Louis Hanus (88) - questioned if youth committee report had been printed in Vestnik, Sister Marlene Caraway replied that it, had been sent to By-Law Committee, Br. Adolf Sabrsula, (58) - Spoke in favor of supporting our-youth, Br. Adolf Sabrsula (58) •• moved that Supreme Lod ge and By-Law Committee support the full extent of all youth proposals. Seconded; by Br. A. J. Zatesky (88).

Br. Joe B. Hejny suggested that the proposals of the youth committee, he printed and distributed to the delegates.

Br. Harley Cox (88) explained that the youth report was so lengthy because they had to go back for 10 years since none of this had ever been put into the by-laws.

-John A. Kubena said that this cannot be put into the by-laws, since it would then be a government within a government.

Sister Marlene Caraway (88) said that it is clear that the youth would be supervised by the Supreme Lodge.

Br. Jarda Cerny (111) moved that Br. Hejny's suggestion of having copies made of the youth committee report and distributed to the delegates.

Seconded Br, Henry Vitek (20), Br Louis Hanus (88) stated that the report had been given to the Supreme Lodge and asked why they had not studied thiS. No answer, Br. Geo. Kacir (54) suggested that the principal ideas be underscored.

Chairman Sablatura asked for reports of Supreme Lodge officers and directors, chief medical examiner and editor be accepted as they were printed in the Vestnik.

Louis Hanus (83) explained that portions of the youth report must have been given to the .Supreme Lodge and jaines Janousek was asked about this. James Janousek replied, "A copy of the report was given to Br. Joe B. Hejny".

Br. Fr. B. Steiner (84) questioned about Publications Committee and was answered that this would be a supplement.

Sister Wanda Elmer (88) inquired which YAD the committee meant and It was clarified that both District and State YAD and Camp Day. Br. Jos. Koliha, Jr., (26) made the motion that we make a donation to the Rest Home in memory of Rudolph Trou g h, Seconded by Br. Henry Breitkreutz (35). Motion carried, and turned over to Salary and Donation Committee for amount.

Br. Jarcla Cerny (111) questioned if past service was included in the retirement program of the Supreme Lcdge.

He was answered by Br. Ben Zabeik (241 that it hail been picked up for ten years.

Br. Jarda Cerny (111) then suggested we pick up all of past service for retirinc! officials, This was referred to Salary and Donations Committee.

Br. Nick `Morris (GO) pointed to the ommission in the editor's salary for meals and lodging.

It was added "$5.00 for meals, plus lodging. per clay".

Br. Nick Morris (66) asked why the Editor was nut at the bottom of the salary schedule.

Br. (1 Louis Kudrna (25) said that 082-,A Committee did not recommend this.

Br. A. M. VrIa. (130) stated an officer of the Supreme Lodge should be paid a little more than the editor, since the editor is a hired employee.

Wednesday; August 21, 1968 Br, Nick A. Morris (66) corrected this by saying that the editor is not hired but elected by the convention.

Br. Ernie Hanka. (88) asked for verification of $5.00 per day for meals.

It was 'explained that whatever bill was presented for the meal up to $5.00 would be accepted.

Sister Frances Olexa (88) stated that the recommendation of the Salary and Donations Committee was unfair to the editor,. that he should have the same salary as a Supreme Ledge officer: Br. Tommy Caraway (88) question-, eel about State Youth Director's salary.'

He was answered that a state youth director Was hired.

Br; Jarda Cerny (111) said that this committee should realize that there is more work and more pressure put on the editor.

Rest Home Committee Recommendations to the XX Convention of the SPJST The Taylor SPJST Rest Home is now composed of three wings branching out from a central administration building. The existing structure has a 54-bed capacity. It also has only a. $68,000 debt, which is being repaid at the rate of $5,000 plus interest a year. They are $2,000 ahead of payments at this time We have plans for a 14-bed, intensive-care hospital wing. This would complete the building of the home which was begun by the 1956 Convention. WE RECOMMEND A LOAN OF UP TO $72,000 BE MADE AVAILABLE FOR THIS PURPOSE. This would make the total debt the sum of $140,000.

The building of the Taylor Rest Home wing will make a completed unit. More facilities should be built in other districts as money becomes available.

These additional homes should be built in areas which are most heavily populated with SPJST members.

WE RECOMMEND A NEW SPJST REST HOME BE BUILT IN DISTRICT

He mentioned an appropriate site in the Needville area and also stated that as long as the rest home owes us $1.00 the SPJST can foreclose and it would belong to the SPJST, Br. Adolf Sabrsula (58) asked if we accept the name SPJST, would it still be a charitable institution.

Br. Geo. Kacir (64) mentioned that he, was in favor of the $72,000 loan for additional wing; however, this should be divided into two separate items, first: discuss the wing to the present rest home, and, second, the additional rest home, and he moved that we approve the $72,000 loan to the rest home.

Br. Frank Klinkovsky (47) made a report for the Grievance Committee, stating there were only two complaints, which were withdrawn.

The Grievance Committee received two complaints and both were pertaining to questions as to why their letters were not published in the Vestnik.

The Publication Committee was called on to help settle these complaints, On the first complaint, after a lengthy discussion, the Brother withdrew his grievance.

In the second instance after an explanation. and discussion, also with the Publication Committee, the Brother said he was satisfied with the explanation.

Another complaint was that the printing of the Vestnik for the past three months had too much personal promotion. After discussion we called the editor and then we came to agreement with the Brother who made the complaint and he dropped the grievance.

We had two more complaints. We satisfied one sister with an explanation, and referred the other to the Salaries and Donations Committee.

fessionals in the fields of youth work, such as the Longhorn Recreation Laboratory, which the State Youth Director has attended two years and the District Youth Directors were given the opportunity to attend one time this past year.

PROPOSAL: That the local lodge youth clubs be reimbursed 15c per active youth, instead of 10c per active youth, based on the quarterly reports submitted by the local lodges.

PROPOSAL: That the District Youth Fund be raised from 5c per youth to 10c per youth, due to increasing costs.

PROPOSAL: That a standing committee of three (3) be appointed by the Supreme Lodge to go into effect January 1, 1971 to determine the feasibility of the development of and a sight for a family youth camp and recreational park. This committee is to report their findings at the next convention.

The same allocation as approved for the camping fund in the 1964 Convention to be continued.

PROPOSAL: The President of the Supreme Lodge to be the head of the Youth Department and will attend any meetings of the seven (7) District Youth Directors in an advisory capacity. The State Youth Director will submit to the president weekly reports, either orally or written.

O&A Committee Report As previously stated, we were asked by the XIX Convention to investigate and make recommendations to this, the XX Convention, regarding the purchase of land for a new home office and construction of a new home office building and disposition of the present building.

We of the O&A Committee are recommending to this convention that they approve the purchase of land for construction of a new home office.

First, I would like to give you a brief description of our present home office.

It was built 40 years ago in 1928. It appears to have been built for commercial office rental for attorneys, doctors, realtors, etc. is long and narrow (110 feet by feet). Its narrowness along with the stairs, elevators and hallway taking up a 40x16 foot section right in the middle, This is over 20% of the space on any 1 floor. This prevents any practical remodeling for office space suitable to our needs.

The stairs and the elevators open right into the president's and vicepresident's offices. Any visitor or guest can hardly refrain from being heard in all the offices. Also, through no fault of the visitor or employees, this is a distraction to the employees each time the elevator stops and someone gets off and under present conditions cannot be avoided. Coming off the elevator you practically step into the offices of the president, vice-president, or the office of three secretaries. The general design of the building is just plain bad. Both the president's and vice-president's offices are 9x11 tubby holes. There are 2 doors opening into each office. In this space they have their desk, chair, files and barely room for one visitor's chair

Wednesday, August 21, 1968 The SPJST uses the basement for storage, parts of the second floor for supplies and reproduction equipment and coffee room. The third floor is used for the main offices and the State Youth Director is on the fourth floor.

The remaining portion of the building is about one-half occupied with tenants and one-half empty.

Why are we recommending a new home office? There are several reasons. The present building is not suitable to our growing fraternity. The growth has caused crowded conditions due to an increase not only in personnel but space that is required for records that are necessary. The files are crowded that if one person is working on them some are inaccessible or the 2nd person desiring to use the files has to go out of his way or disturb the person already using the files. The address plate room is so full now that with a little more growth there will be little or no room to work.

You may ask why not spread out to the other floors where offices are ununoccupied. This will make the files even worse to get to than now. This building has no vault or fire protection facility to store all of the important documents and files that we have, which are kept in the building.

Visitors and salesmen upon entering the Supreme Lodge offices on the 3rd floor practically step into the office of the president, vice-president, or 3 secretaries as they get. off the elevator. They can be heard over the entire floor, unintentionally disturbing almost the entire office force.

Repairs to the building are increasing and they will continue to increase as the building grows older. I believe that last year 3 different air compressors had to be replaced. Two failed the week I spent there. I understand the plumbing is only working on borrowed time.

When this building was purchased it may have been with the idea that we will make money with the rental income. Times have changed. Outside income is decreasing. Tenants are becoming more and more demanding and as other more attractive offices become available they will be leaving. There is a continuous problem with tenants desiring street level offices and parking space. We have fewer tenants now than in the 1950's because the tenants prefer to haee ground floor space with convenient parking space for themselves and their customers or clients.

Wednesday, August 21, 1968 One of the former SPJST tenants moved and built a building with offices for rent, taking some of the SPJST tenants with him, thinking that he would make a good rental income. He has on occasion. stated that this rental income is not the "gravy train" he expected. Instead of tending to his own occupation he finds himself playing plumber, janitor, or nursemaid to his tenants. This is exactly what is happening in our SPJST office. When I have been there for a directors' meeting and also during my week stay in August, I have seen your officers being janitors and nursemaids to the tenants.

You might say "why don't the officers let the janitor building superintendent handle these complaints?"

If you have a complaint, do you go to the janitor if you are a tenant or go to the part-time salesclerk or stock boy if something is wrong with a piece of merchandise you purchased? No, you want to talk, to fuss at or just get results from the "top" man.

At one director's meeting when all of the officers and directors were in conference the president had to leave for about an hour and half because one of the tenants called as something was either on fire or the air conditioner was smoking. This type of interruption also occurred during another one of our visits while the directors were in Temple on another occasion.

In August one of the tenant's air conditioners quit working and since the officers could not get, a repairman immediately, the tenants, in turn, kept calling until they had three officers and three secretaries involved.

You might ask why not remodel the present buildings This has been proposed and due to the narrowness of the building and the spacing of the interior supports nothing could be gained by remodeling. I would like to read a letter I received from Mr. William Kuehn of the Steck Co. of Austin after he surveyed the present building for possible remodeling.

If you have checked the chart you can see that the cost of occupying this building is increasing, especially since 1961. This is caused both by fewer tenants and increased cost of maintaintaining the building.

(Have chart of income and expenses) This increased cost does not reflect the time that our SPJST officers are away from their elected duties taking' care of tenants' problems. This is why we are recommending a new home of-

vtsTN—fic fice for the use of the SPJST only.

This would also take away from the duties of the officers while training new clerical help and also avoid the reputation of being an unstable insurance firm which ever so often has to or does move its home office.

(Have chart on population growth, cost of land, etc.)

If the convention votes in favor of building a new home office, we recommend that a committee be empowered by the 1968 convention to see that the necessary land be purchased, building be constructed, and current building disposed of as soon as feasible, without any approval being necessary from any future convention.

We recommend that this building committee be composed of three (3) members to be appointed prior to the closing of the XX Convention to guide and steer the construction of the new home office.

This committee should be empowered to see that the building is constructed as soon as feasible. They should study the plans as proposed by the Supreme Lodge officers and make recommendations if they think this is necessary.

Prior to beginning construction, the final plans should have the approval of the Supreme Lodge officers, since they are familiar with the current and future needs of the home office.

This committee should enforce the construction of the building. Any recommendations the committee would have in floor plans should have the approval of the Supreme Lodge officers before becoming a part of the finalized plan. We believe the convention should approve a special archives room that would be ample for display and not be so small that it would become a junk room.

YOUTH SECTION FROM THE DISTRICT YOUTH DIRECTORS DISTRICT II Dear Members and Friends: Recreation Day at Camp Tahuaya for District II was truly all recreation for everyone.

At 2 p.m. the youngsters, supervised by two competent gentlemen, Frankie Klinkovsky and Frankie Novosad, went swimming for a couple of hours.

During that period, youth leaders from the district were setting up their booths for the Penny Carnival.

At the main ,gate was Georgia Sodek, taking an admission of one penny.

Next was the snack bar, tended by Dorothy Novosad and Dorothy Pechal, who were busy selling popcorn and lemonade. Bill Brodie and sons took care of the balloon-dart game. Leona Stalmach was with the "False Alarm," or "Ring the Bell," assisted by Vlasta Hruska; Alma Ivicic, and Mrs. Pajestka, were with bowling and other games.

Molly Zavodny was busy as a bee at the fish pond, and was the first one to sell out. Leona Schiller was with the clothes pin drop. Catherine Walker was busy with the Waste Basket Throw, and Amelia Pokorny with Penny Pitch; Adeline Kohutek with ping-pong bounce ball, and Laverne Vanicck with the Ring the Bottle.

Regina Zabeik was busy cutting crepe paper to decorate each booth, and then she was seated at the guessing game to rest.

Carnival music and polkas provided the background music.

Finale of the afternoon was two Indians doing an Indian wrestle and a "strong man" exhibition, and the hose ride, which went over with a lot of cheering •for the horse you preferred.

The meal was delicious; everybody dug in after a busy active afternoon of enjoyment. Thanks go to all who helped. It was a joy to won. each one of you,.

YOUTH LEADERSLODGE NO. 35, ELK Dear Friends, The Elk Youth Club has had a very busy summer. In July we had two swimming parties and hamburger outings. In August we all went to Camp Val Verde for one clay ® Tuesday, Aug. 6th. The noon meal was very good; they hired excellent cooks. Most of the kids can't wait for next year's camp. I personally felt the length of each activity was too short. You no more than get to your activity, get interested in it and it's time to leave. Al* there was just too much walking.

Preparing to go to State YAD from Elk are Cynthia, Denise, and Charlotte Banik. They are competing in group talent. Yours truly and family are going; also the Vernon Wood family.

We intend to have a good time and hope to bring state honors home to Elk. The youth club will have a watermelon cut Wednesday, August 21st at 8 p.m. at Battle Lake. If you would like to swim, come early.

The camp at Val Verde was lots of fun. The youths had different activities. Everyone enjoyed himself. The food was good, especially the cookout the youths fixed themselves. Mrs. Bartek, Mrs. Ivicic and I had the honor of cleaning the peach cobbler pots, which were a sight!

The camp was well organized.

Thanks to Bro. Janousek and the Supreme Lodge for the opportunity to go to camp. We will never forget the noise under our window. I'm sure Mrs. Stalmach, Mrs. Walker, Mrs. Mikeska, and others are still thinking about the noise when they go to bed at night.

On Sunday, August 11, at Camp Tahuaya, each youth club had different booths. Our youth club had penny pitch, and waste basket throw. It was fun. Each family brought a covered dish for simper. The food was good and there was plenty of it.

Sunday, August 18 will be State Youth Achievement [)ay at Lodge 88, Houston.

On Sunday, August 25, our youth club will hold its monthly meeting.

LETTERS FROM THE YOUTH LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS

Dear Readers: I have just returned from four fantastic days at District III Camp at Val Verde. In spite of the spiders in the tree houses, sore muscles, and other various mishaps, I had a wonderful time. Before I go any further, I would like to say hello to all my new friends. I truly believe that going to a camp such as this is an experience that all children and teens should take advantage of. You meet so many people and make many new friends, but this is just the least of it; you become truly better friends with the people you already know. Sharing experiences together with others does something to draw you closer together. It's really rather hard to explain to those who have not had a chance to attend camp,

but those who did go know just what I am talking about.

I feel very honored to have received the award for Outstanding Camper, and offer my congratulations to all those who received various awards in Marksmanship, Good Campers, and Excellent Campers. I regret that I will not be able to attend camp next year because of my age, but I will be thinking about all of you next year at camp time.

Dear Readers, On August 5, the Youth club of Lodge 66 left for Camp Val Verde, We arrived there at eight o'clock, By nine all of District III was there.

We then had camp assembly. This is where we learn the rules and receive the schedule. We were put in our social groups where we made up a name and a sang for it.

Our cabins were then assigned to us. We got our luggage, took it to our cabins, and made up our beds.

During our four days at camp we enjoyed such activities as swimming, dancing, crafts, sports, games, archery, riflery, nature study, and horseback riding.

Teenage campers enjoyed a campout. We hiked to some tree houses where we camped out overnight.

Thursday evening, August 8, we headed for home. It was a long and enjoyable stay.

I made many new friends at camp and I hope I can see them more often.

I would like to thank Mr. Jame:=, Janousek, SYD, and Mrs. Wilma Nesuda, DYD, for making all of this possible.
