THOUGHTS. . .

Failure. Failing at something enlarges the spirit of a person with strong character, while it damages the spirit of a weak character. On the other hand, success makes a strong character more gentle and responsive to the needs and cares of those around him. A weak character, however, becomes more aggressive, belligerent, and tyrannical in behavior. • 135 Million Insured American.s About 135 million Americans now have life insurance protection, the Institute of Life Insurance reports. With the nation's total population just past the 200 million mark, this means the lives of two out of every three men, women and children in the United States are insured.. The 135 million include all persons covered by individual and group plans with private insurance organizations as well as those under government life insurance programs. The Institute reports that legal reserve life insurance companies now insure about 130 million Americans. Most families have at least some life insurance protection. Coverage is almost universal among families with young children. While life insurance is widely thought of as an absolute necessity, statistics

"Rejoice, 0 young man in your youth— And let your heart cheer you in the days of youth; Walk in the ways of your heart and the sight of your eyes. — Solomon A jealous person is one who's fonder of suspicions than of certainties, and thus refuses to exchange the one for the other. —Washington Irving indicate that many families need more protection than they now have. The average amount in force would cover about two years of disposable income per family. At the beginning of this year, the average life insurance protection per family was $15,900. The need for life insurance can vary considerably even among families with similar incomes. But, as a rule of thumb, many experts in financial planning advise that families generally need at least enough to cover four to five years of family income. Although the nation's protection level can still be considered low in relation to needs, life insurance coverage is increasing faster than family income. For example, the average amount of life insurance per family has more

than doubled during the past decade. During the same period, disposable income per family climbed only 50 per cent. By far the largest share of family life insurance protection is logically on the husband. Many families also carry at least some insurance on the wife, who makes an important economic contribution even when she does not earn income. Particularly with wider use of family plan policies, coverage also often includes at least modest amounts on the children. The Twilight Years. Many people worry a whole lot about how they should spend their last clays on earth. The trouble with so many is that they grow old before they learn what is good for them. A wise friend of mine told me his formula for living out one's twilight years in happiness and contentment. He found the following to be important: think well of yourself; have something pleasant to do; have a desire to be somebody and accomplish something; live a clean life; take an interest in state, national, and world affairs. It doesn't hurt to live a little in the past, a whole lot in the present, and rot for get the future. An interest in good music and books helps — any of the arts, in fact. A person must adjust
