OUR STATE YAD "A success in every respect," is the only, way one can describe the events at our recent State Youth Achievement Day, held at Lodge 66, Linden Hall, in Elm Mott. The youth were at their best.

Over 700 people were present, which attests to the fact that a large number of parents and friends were there to cheer their children on to the finish line. The publicity given the event in the newspapers of the Centex area accounted for a nice number of visitors. It was, without question, the largest statewide SPJST youth function that has ever taken place in the history of our Order. There were few areas and lodges that were not represented.

The program and contests went off like clockwork, thanks to the pre-program planning efforts of State Youth Director, Brother James J. Janousek, although it took the cooperation of dozens of people behind the scenes to put the event over. Much of the success of the smoothness of operations at Linden Hall can be directly attributed to the many hard workers and members of Lodge 66: the kitchen staff, who served the large crowd so efficiently, the youth leader and youth members who decorated the premises and saw to a lot of small details, the men serving the refreshments, maintenance crew, clean-up men, floor chairman, and many, many others, all of whom contributed their share at making the event as smooth an operation as possible. * The Lord giveth and He taketh away.

All the joy and happy excitement at the State YAD was marred by the sudden death of Sister Georgia. Schiller (nee Lois Michalicek), member of Lodge Nu, 87, Temple. This was a sad and tragic experience to many, especially to the members of her own lodge. Although this dampened the spirit of the occasion, the program continued. Sister Schiller would have wanted it that way. The entire Order extends its sympathy to the griefstricken members of the surviving family. e To all the winners, congratulations are in order. Some of the pictures of the winners appear in this issue; others will appear in the following issues.

Features FOR PROSPECTIVE COLLEGE STUDENTS Editor's Note: For several years now, Brother Calvin Chervenka has been encouraging college students to enroll in Czech classes in the university or college of their choice. In this article, he strives to explain why the study of Czech is important, if it is available.

This information is very timely because of the recent increased emphasis at the University of Texas A & M University upon the study of Czech and of the advantages that lay open to students at these schools. For further information relative to courses in Czech at either two institutions, prospective students should contact one of the following immediately: Dr. John M. Skrivanek, Dept of Slavic Languages, Texas A & M University, College Station, Tex.; or Dr. Jan Perkoski, Dept. of Slavic Languages, U of Texas, Austin, Texas.

• • If you are of Czech descent and select a school which teaches courses in the Czech language and/or has a Czech Club, I strongly urge you to join the Czech Club and, plan to study some Czech either as a major course of

study, to fulfill foreign language requirements in other courses of study, or to obtain a beter working knowledge of the language for your own benefit. If your college does not offer courses in the Czech language, inquire about the possibility of it being taught if there were sufficient interest in and demand for it. Then discuss the matter with fellow students who might be interested in taking a Czech course.

There are several reasons for and benefits from your study of Czech.

1. The beginning course in Czech will be relatively easy for you if you are even only slightly familiar with the language. Word pronunciations are the hardest hurdle for anyone starting to learn Czech, but most persons of Czech descent seem to have a natural ability to "twist" their tongues as required for the proper pronunciations. Courses in Czech will count as foreign language or elective credit toward most degrees at most schools.

Why not utilize and add to your existing knowledge and natural ability in Czech instead of starting on some other foreign language with which you are totally unfamiliar and which may prove of very little if any use to you?

2. A better knowledge of the Czech language will be of help to you in

4 learning other foreign languaes which you may desire to study later.

The more foreign languages you know, the easier it is to learn additional ones. Knowledge of one or more foreign languages will better qualify you for many additional job opportunities, no matter what may be your major course of study. The Czech language is often referred to as the "key to learning the Russian language , " which is at present very important in various governmental, scientific, industrial commercial, educational, and literaiy activities, There is an ever increasing need in the U. S. diplomatic and military services for persons who can "deal with the Russians in their own language."

3. Taking a course in Czech may better qualify you for a certain scholar ships and/or student loans provided by Czech fraternal or other organizations.

Although registration for czech courses may not necessarily be a prerequisite for obtaining these scholarships and loans, such action will vertainly be in your favor.

4. A better knowledge of the Czech language may be of considerable practical value to you after graduation if you engage in any professional or business enterprise which competes for the patronage of the many persons who do and will continue to prefer use of the Czech language. Also, there are many fraternal, religious, and mutual organizations in Texas which will continue to require officers who are proficient in both the Czech and English languages. Even if you are unable to take a regular college credit course in the Czech language, try to enroll in a terminal-type "conversational Czech" course which will be helpful for the reasons mentioned in this paragraph.

5. A better knowledge of the Czech language and/or membership, in a Czech Club will better prepare you for more successful living by a more complete acceptance and assimilation into the American society and way of life. Most liklely your name (even if you change it) will always be known or recognized by some as being of Czech origin. This will be to your credit because practically everyone is aware of and respects the patriotic and cultural contributions which the Czechs have made to help make this country great. Most people realize that this country is great because we are a composite group which includes the

strands of many peoples and many cultures and that one can be (and indeed is more likely to be) a true, loyal, and more appreciative American if he does not forsake the language and culture of his ancestors. If you can answer the occasional friendly question about the language and culture of your ancestors, others will respect rather than criticize you for it.. As you grow older, you yours'elf will feel and everincreasing psychological and consequently practical need for knowledge about your ancestral ties and cultural heritage and background. Avail yourself of any present opportunities to gain this knowledge for your own future benefit.

• 4, TO OUR CZECH STUDENTS IN TEXAS

A new school semester is about to get underway at Texas A & M University, and we want to remind all prospective students of Czech who intend taking a Czech language course that they h a v e a choice of one of two courses: Czech 127 - 128 for beginners ,and Czech 387-388 for advanced students who already have a speaking knowledge of the language. You can get credit for Czech the same as any other foreign language.

New students who will be registering should request to enroll in a Czech course, otherwise, they might be enrolled in some other foreign language by an adviser. If you need further information write to me or to Dr.

UT Gains Czech Instructor Dr. Edward Taborsky, Professor of

Government at the University of Texas, informs us that his wife, Edith Taborsky, has been added to the faculty as an assistant in the teaching of Czech, starting this fall. Mrs. Taborsky is a native of Prague, Czechoslovakia, and is eminently qualified. —Dd.

Newsbriefs The events at our State YAD at Elm Mott last week were marred by the sudden death of Mrs. George Schiller, 52, of Temple. Mrs. Schiller collapsed suddenly in the early afternoon and was taken by ambulance to Providence Hospital in Waco, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Sister Schiller was a member of Lodge No. 87, Temple. Interment was in Bellwood Memorial Park in Temple.

F. J. sladovnik, 71, passed away in a Temple hospital Aug. 26th. He lived on Route 1, Holland. Interment was in the Holland Cemetery. Brother Eladovnik was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 24, Cyclone.

We were pleased with the recent visit of Brother Vine Ondrusek, member of Lodge 130, Dallas; Mr. and Mrs. Vladimir Bily and daughter Kay Lynette, members of Lodge 88, Houston; and Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Kadlecek and son Johnny and daughter Marian, also from Houston Lodge 88. The latter two families were returning from Six Flags near Dallas.

• • Edward (Eddie) Schefcak, 54, passed away in Dallas on Sept. lst. Interment was in Restland Memorial Park in Dallas. Brother Schefcak was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 130, Dallas, and son of Brother and Sister Hugo Schefcak, both residents in the SPJST Rest Home in Taylor.

Anna Vilt, 77, passed away in Richmond on Aug. 12th. Burial was in the WOW Cemetery in Rosenberg. Sister Vilt was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 81, Needville.

Mrs. Mary Krizan and Mrs. Lasca Neal of Garland, recently took a chartered bus tour that took them to Laredo, Monterey, Saltillo, San Luis Potast, Guadalajara, Mexico City, Acap ulco, and other points of interest in Mexico. The tour lasted from Aug. 13 to Aug. 27th. Sister Krizan is a member of Lodge 6, Cottonwood.

—SPJSTCZECH DAY AT THE STATE FAIR October 9, 1966 Arrangements for another. Czech Day program at the State Fair of Texas are progressing nicely. The program will commence at 10 a.m. to 13:20 p.m. in the coliseum, and will continue in the bandshell until 9 p.m.

This year we will have the largest parade of costumes in the history of the Czech Days at the State Fair of Texas. For information pertaining to the costumes you may communicate with Miss Agnes Houdek, 6606 Wofford St., Dallas, Texas. She will be delighted to give you the desired and necessary information.

Another interesting segment of the program will be the Beseda, the national dance of Czechoslovakia. The Reseda is always appreciated by the public. Should any circles be willing to participate in dancing the I3eseda, please inform me. We wish to have the coliseum filled to its capacity with 13eseda circles., The American Sokols will have the National Sokol Slet in Dallas in 1967.

They will likewise participate in the Czech Day program. The Sokol exhibition will demonstrate what we can anticipate next year during the National Sokol in Dallas.

LODGE NO. 111, ROBSTOWN Lodge 117 Robstown, will hold its regular meeting on Sept. 11, at the Community Hall at 3 p.m. At this meeting we will have visiting us the State Youth Director, Brother James Janousek. He will explain to the membership and the youth the benefits of organizing a youth club.

Lodge 117 is especially extending a welcome to the youth in the Robstown area; members and non-members are welcome. Sis. Helen Pavelka, secretary of Lodge 117 will be mailing applications to the youth to attend the meeting and be our guests.

Sisters are asked to bring pastry, sandwiches, etc., for the social hour which will follow the meeting. Hope to see all of you on Sept. 11th. Parents do bring the youngsters so a youth club discussion can be heard by all.

V2STNIK been ginned in town and the heavy showers have really messed up the field work.

Our last meeting was fairly well attended, The door prize went to Brother EMU Krejci. Our next meeting will again be on the second Monday of the month — Sept. 12th, at 8 p.m. Don't forget to be there. Later on, we will resume our afternoons meeting at 2 p.m.

This change was due to St. Joseph's Parish having their picnic on that Sunday, and of course, many of our members want to attend that. Everyone is invited to this picnic.

Mr. John Paylas, 66 passed away suddenly while enroute to Yoakum.

His wife, one son, one daughter, Mrs. George Pospisil, several grandchildren, four brothers, and four sisters survive him.

Our American Legion picnic is over, and from all reports all the members are pleased, since it was a great success. The weather was good and people came from near and far. The music was by Melvin and His Polka Boys, and they really did a fine job.

All those present had an enjoyable time. After the business session and a delicious supper served by Sister Mary Beralek and her helpers, we had music by "The Two-Steppers" from Waco.

DISTRICT V YOUTH Dear Members, I think the State Youth Achievement Day waS a huge success, and much credit is due our State Youth Director, James J. Janousek for the way he had everything planned. Much credit is also due our excellent Emcee, Bro. Nick Morris; not only did he do a good pob as Emcee, but he led the singing so capably that I am sure everyone enjoyed it very much. This is the first time that the SPJST fraternal song was sung on our youth day, and it surely added to making it a memorable occasion! Dear Readers, A very sucessful State YAD is now passed. We enjoyed the day's events very much. I know it took a lot of hard work and planning to make it such a success. The crowd was really big and the food was good. All the crafts and talents were really nice.

I was very proud of our Youth Club from Lodge 58. We had a nice attendance from here to see Larry Kalina get king runner up, third place craft, ages 15 — 19, and Patsy Kalina get 2nd place craft, ages 11 — 14. Also District 6 did itself very good because we had many winners from this district. I am proud of all them, especially Mrs. ElsieBrdecka for being dist.

I just got back from our State YAD. It was a wonderful and enjoyable day.

Congratulations to all the winners and also to all who participated in any way.

It couldn't been done without all the contestants who entered. I think everyone was exceptionally good. I know the judges had "a very hard job, but I can truly say it was a job well done.

We all know everyone can't win first place.

Our Beseda group was the only group to enter the Beseda competition, and our jr. Club number won 2nd place.

Our regular meeting is on the first Sunday of the month at 1:30 for the Jr. Club, and 2:30 for the Teen Club.

On Sept. 11, at 3 p. m. we will play Lodge 39 (Bryan) in a game of basepall at Bryan. So let's all go and en-joy a day of fellowship with them.

There were 14 children who started swimming lessons from our lodge at the West pool. The first day, four changed their minds and didn't come back. ,I was sorry to hear that the next day, but I am very proud of the 10 who went on and learned how to swim. They were very happy and glad when they were told by their instructor that they passed their test.

Also, the Teen Club members, friends, and parents enjoyed an outing at the river on Sunday, Aug. 21st.

Now it is back to school for most of you. Vacations are over. Remember our next meeting on Sept. 11th. We want to set the dates for our next parties.

Wednesday, September 7, 1966 Ruth Krizan, Youth Leader --SPJST LODGE NO. 135, ENNIS Rear Readers, I would like to write a few lines about our camping on Aug. 13th and 14th at Hilltop Lakes Resort. There were nine youths who went from our lodge. Speaking for all of us who attended the camp, we enjoyed it very much. I would also like to thank Mrs. Wilma Nesuda and Mrs. Frances Kudrna, because I know it took a lot of their time planning and working things out to make the trip possible.

Our youth club will sponsor a Teenage Barn Dance; music by "The. Sonics" on Friday, Sept. 23rd at 8 p.m., at the Sokol Hall. Everyone from far and near is invited. We hope to have a good turnout.

Our next youth club meeting will be Sept. 11th at 2:30 p.m. at the Sokol Hall. After the meeting we will have a beseda rehearsal to get ready for the Czech Day at the State Fair.

Wednesday, September 7, 1066 LETTERS FROM THE YOUTH LODGE. NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Readers, The largest attendance the teens of Lodge 88 have had at their teen dances has been 900. This past week the "Glow Coats" and the "Tuff Cats" proved that they too can draw extra large crowds. Over 800 teens attended their dance. This is not a new record, but it does show that the teens do return and with them, they bring many more teens.

There has been a question as to whether or not the dances will continue during school. We WILL have dances every first and third Fridays of the month from 7:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., unless something unusual arises. If it does, we will notify the teens ahead of time.

Won't you attend these dances?

Little Thomas Dyballa, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Dyballa, won 3rd place this past Sunday in the State Talent Contest. I would like to congratulate him on his fine performance.

This past Sunday will be a day I'll never forget for as long as I live. Being named "Teenager of the Year" means a great deal to me. If it weren't for the many wonderful people who supported me throughout the year, I never could have won this award.

I would like to thank Mrs. Wanda.

Elzner for being as active as she is with the teens of Lodge 88. Mrs. Elzner always finds something for us to do, whether it be work or fun.

I would like to say a special "Thank You" to Mrs. James Janousek, and Mr. Nick Morris. I have never seen two people work so hard and achieve so such. They really did an outstanding job this year. Given the opportunity, teens can go a long way.

LODGE NO. 58, HUNGERFORD Dear Readers, Sunday was the Youth Achievement Day at Waco. Those attending from Hungerford Lodge 58 were: Bobby Dorris, Peggy Kalina, Sherrie Dorris, Claudia Dorris, Patsy Kalina, Geraldine Kalina, Judy Sabrsula, Carolyn Sabrsula, and Larry Kalina.

Others attending were Mr. and Mrs. Adolf Sabrsula of our mother lodge, and Mr. B. C. Dorris, husband of our assistant youth leaders; also Youth Leader Mrs. Julius Kalina, Jr., and our Dorris.

I won second in crafts and Larry was runner-up in the king contest. I really enjoyed the State YAD. Fraternally, Patsy Kalina LODGE NO. 30, TAITON Dear Members and Readers, Sunday, Aug. 28th, was a, very active day for me. I got up early in the morning and attended church. At about 7 a.m. we started to Waco to attend the SPJST State Youth Achievement Day. We had a very pleasant trip. We arrived at Linden Hall about 10:30.

Our SPJST groups did real well. We had several first, second, and thirdplace winners. I performed in a combo. We placed second.

We arrived home safely about 11:30 p.m.

LODGE NO. 73, SEYMOUR Dear Readers, The district meeting was a happy one to me. I won 1st place in the 11-14 age group, Junior of the Year, and 3rd in the talent contest. Yes, I think the District IV meeting at Wall on the 31st of July was a very good one.

We had our monthly meeting for August. We talked about the camping trip. I think everyone enjoyed the trip.

Wednesday, September 7, 1966 LODGE NO. 30, TAITON Dear Readers, Well, the State YAD is over and what an exciting day it was! I guess it was one of the happiest moments for me when Mr. Janousek announced I was the state talent winner in the 6-11 age group, and also the state point contest winner.

We are also proud to be the state winners of the Club of the Year. We We know without the hel p of Mrs. Krutilek, her assistants, and the rest of the mothers, we couldn't have won. so we owe them a great deal of credit.

Our youth leader, Mrs. Krutilek, was also the Youth Leader! of the Year, which she has worked very hard for, and greatly deserved. We are all very proud of her.

More than anything else, I am happy that my brother Frankie is due home any minute today. I will be so glad to see him. I just don't know what I'll do when he comes home. I'll be so full of joy and gladness to see him home.

LODGE 48, BEYERSVILLE Dear Members and Friends, On August 28th I went to Lodge 66 for the State YAD. I had a lot of fun.

The talent contests were really great.

The children who performed were all good. I don't know how the judges could decide on the most talented.

The queens' contest was real beautiful; they had a real pretty setting in the background and, all queens and kings said their speeches real well. We are real proud of our King from District 2 for getting state.

The youth club of Beyersville will have their monthly meeting on Oct. 2.

At this meeting we have a new project to discuss so I will ask all members to please be present. So long for now.

The performance of all of the participants in the talent and arts and crafts and king and queen contests was great! The judges must have had a difficult time in making their decisions, for all the youth were just great in my books.

LODGE NO. 81, NEEDVILLE Dear Readers, Hi! You can really tell the effect of summer on the attendance! With all the summer jobs and activities it has dropped considerably. I sure do hope that it will pick up now that school has begun!

I sure did enjoy the State Achievement Day! This was my first time to go and everything was just wonderful.

Some of the talent was so different and surprising. I know it will be an experience I will never forget.

RESOLUTION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution 'Committee of Anton Cermak No. 56, Corpus Christi, Texas, wish to express, in behalf of our members, our deepest sympathy to the family of our lodge brother, HENRY C. CABLA, who passed away Monday, Aug. 29th, 1966, at his home in West St. Paul,Texas. at the age of 80 years.

Funeral services were held Aug. 31st in Sinton at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial in the Sinton Cemetery. He was born in 1886 in Czechoslovakia, and moved to Texas in 1905. He farmed in Bell County until 1925. In 1926 he moved to West St.

He is survived by his wife, Angelina; three sons, Eugene H. Cabla of West St. Paul, Laths J. Cabla of Sinton, and Dr. Herbert F. Cabla of Portland; three daughters, Mrs. George Meeker of West St. Paul, Mrs. Jerry Manasek, and Mrs. C. W. Hughes, both of Sinton; a brother, Jerry Cabla of Temple, two half-brothers, Albert and Matthew Cabla, both of Temple; a sister, Mrs. T. B. Spears of Yucaipa, Calif.; three half-sisters, Mrs. Annie Shenkir of Cleburne, Mrs. Henrietta Matus of Temple, and Mrs. Mary Chambers of San Antonio; 17 grandchildren and four great-grandchildrenn.

He was a member of the SPJST since Feb. 10th, 1907, and his family maintains 100 per cent membership. We are going to miss him in our lodge activities.

WASHINGTON-ON-THE-BRAZOS: TEXAS' BIRTHPLACE

By R. Henderson Shuffler Many Texans have never heard of the town of Washington, Texas, or, as we call it now, "Washington-on-theBrazos." A comparative few have visited this spot where the Republic of Texas was born. It is an isolated village of a few hundred souls, perched on a bluff above the muddy Brazos. To reach it you must turn south off the highway between Navasota and Brenham and follow a farm road for a mile or more.

In many ways Washington is much as it was in 1836, a straggle of houses along a single street. The biggest store in town sells liquor. There is a grocery, which also sells cold beer and fine barbecue; a hardware store, two garages and a post office. And there is the 500-acre Washington State Park.

In 1836 there were fewer residences and more commercial establishments, with no parlz.

History books will tell you little more than this about the town — except that here, on March 1, 1836, dele gates of colonial Texas met to declare their independence from Mexico and write our first Constitution. Even the journals of the Convention which have come down to us are skimpy. The meeting was held in turbulent times, not

conducive to careful paper work. When it broke up, the delegates scattered to see their families across the Sabine, to join the army, or in some cases, to flee Texas themselves. The new government promptly ad j ourned to Harrisburg, thinking, mistakenly, the Mexican army was on its heels.

All of the signed copies of the Declaration, at least six, promptly disappeared. Only one has ever been found; it turned up in Washington, D. C., 60 years after its signing, and was sent back to Texas. Today it reposes in a vault at the State Archives.

The Constitution fared even worse.

As Jesse Grimes, who was a prominent member of the Convention, wrote in 1838: "Whilst the Convention was in session at Washington, its business was subject to constant interruptions from alarms about the, approach of the enemy." On March 16th, he recorded, they received word that General Gaona was marching on the town.

"The Convention was then in ses-

sion, then late at night; and being seized with dreadful apprehensions, immediately adopted the Constitution — passing a resolution authorizing the Secretary — to sign the names of the members." Adjourning in great confusion, the delegates soon learned that the reports of immediate danger were false. They came back into session the next day and installed an interim government to run the country until the fighting was finished.

But what happened to the Constitution itself? Na one knows fully, for certain. Apparently Herbert Simms Kimble, the secretary of the Convention, carried the original back to Nashville, Tennessee, with him. It was published shortly in a Nashville newspaper, then copied in a Cincinnati paper. From the latter it was copied and first published in Texas by the "Telegraph and Texas Register" in August of that year. A copy, certified as true

by Kimble on March 17, 1836, was carried to Washington, D.C., by George C.

Childress and Robert Hamilton, representatives of the Republic to the United, tates. On May 22, they published it in a pamphlet which also included a copy of the declaration.

There is still some argument as to whether Texas finally ratified, in the late summer of 1836, a Constitution of which they had only a third-hand newspaper version, or whether President Burnet by that time may have secured Kimble's original or the certiried copy carried to Washington, D.C. The only known manuscript copy of the Constitution in existence today is an incomplete, unsigned "probable work copy," found in the Land Office files a number of years• agc.

Practically everything else related to occurrences at the town of Washington during the Independence Convention is as lost in a maze of confusion and conflicting reports. No photographs, or even tintypes, were being made in Texas at tis time. Contemporary newspaper accounts were very

18 skimpy, and of all the people present, only one, a visitor from Virginia,' is known to have kept a day-by-day journal.

There has not been an authentic map of the town on record since around 1900. A competent surveyor and an abstractor who attempted to re-plat the town in 1926, when the State was buying land for the park, declared the task was impossible. Deed records are available, but over the years so many errors in lot and block numbers have crept in that it is most difficult to trace them. Since the turn of the cell= tury, most of the deeds have simply described the property as running "from the corner of Mrs. Jones' lot to the corner of Mr. Smith's lot, a distance of so-many feet."

Now a group of public-spirited citizens has determined to restore this historic village as it was in those fateful days between March 1 and 18, 1836.

Organized under the name of "Washington-on-the-Brazos State Park Association" (successor to the old Texas Independence Day Organization) they hope to develop one of the most potent tourist attractions in the State, as well as a living history lesson for many generations of Texans. To insure the accuracy of their restoration, they are sponsoring -painstaking research, both historical and archaeological. The work, under direction of the Texano Program of the University of Texas, is producing most interesting results. These studies are being made with the sanction and cooperation of the State Parks Board.

Old records, the reminiscences and diaries of men who were in Washington in March of 1836, newspapers published in Texas and other countries at the time, letters written from the convention by delegates, and relics actually dug from the earth are supplying pieces for the puzzle. The first necessary step was to re-plat the town, _making it possible to locate on the ground the sites of buildings known to have been there in 1836. Much of this has been done by use of a code-breaking numbers system and has been proven correct by spot checks. Old deed records of Washington County, fortunately available for 1836, indicate ownership of the various sites. Further research shows up the occupation of the owner of each. Then, archaeologists, digging on these sites and sifting every piece of earth, can uncover relics and other evidence which will verify or dispute the historical record.

VESTNtK Bit by bit, the history of the village is emerging. And as the pieces fall into place, a clear picture of the setting in which Texas was born takes shape.

This particular area has been known to civilized man longer than most of Texas. From 1600 on, Spanish priests, trudging from the missions at Goliad to the lands of the Tejas in East Texas, crossed the Brazos at a ford about a mile below the present site of Washington.

After Louisiana became a part of the United States in 1803, succeeding waves of filibusters, bent on "liberating" Texas from the Spanish, or the Mexicans, or whoever happened to own it, used the old La Bahia ford. In 1831, the army of Gutierrez and Magee, marched down the road on its way to establish the short-lived Republic of the West. Several of the American adventurers on this expedition spotted choice lands in the Brazos and Colorado Valleys and slipped back later to stake their claims. Aylett C. (Strap) Buckner was one of these; John W. (Jack) Hall another.

In 1821 Stephen F. Austin came to Nacogdoches on his way to San Antonio to verify the grant made to his just-dead father for peaceful colonization in Texas. The word got around, and before Austin was well on his way down the La Bahia road, several families of hardy souls were on the trail behind him. They would pick their lands and stettle, then wait for Austin to work out the legal technicalities of title.

Thus, in December of 1821 old Andrew Robinson and his family, including his son-in-law, Jack Hall, settled at the La Bahia crossing and staked "squatters' claims" to choice land in the area. The half league to which Robinson acquired title three years later included the crossing site and the land -where the town of Washington is now located.

Robinson installed a ferry and established a tavern at the crossing. "In consideration of my love and affection" and $100 cash (and also as a very sound form of insurance) Andrew Robinson in 1834 deeded the lower half of his land to his daughter, Patsy, and her husband, John W. (Jack) Hall. In return, they pledged to pay one-third of his and his wife's living expenses for the rest of their lives.

Hall bought the upper half of the grant, just across the Brazos from the point at which the Navasota River empties into the larger stream, for

Wednesday, September 7, 1966 $1,000, a little later, and in 1835 laid out a townsite.

The new town's first resident was the Rev. John Wesley Kenny, who made his living as a surveyor. Soon afterward a man named Jones bought a lot and S. R. (Esquire) Roberts purchased a site and built a tavern. All other lots in the 640-acre township were transferred on March 24, 1835, to an association known as the Proprietors of the Town of Washington. These proprietors, each with a fourth interest in the town, where John W. Hall, Dr. Asa Hoxey, Thomas Gay, and the firm of Miller and Somervell. Dr. Hoxey, who then lived at Cole's Settlement (now Independence), a few miles northwest of the township, was generally credited with naming the new town after his home city of Washington, Georgia.

The town lay on a high level plain, which dropped off sharply at a bluff facing the Brazos Liver at its north end. There was a broad shelf below the bluff and another sharp drop to the river itself. Ferry, the principal street of the town, began at the riverbank at the point where John Hall's ferry landed. It mounted the two bluffs and heavily wooded area. The cross streets, from the river moving southward, included Austin, Main, Peterson, Jackson, and Gay. In early 1836, Washington was booming. The proprietors had held a number of public sales, all well-advertised in the Telegraph and Texas Register at San Felipe and the Texas Republican at Brazoria, The December 28, 1835 issue of the Telegraph, official newspaper of the provisional government, carried an account of the action of the Consultation, meeting at San Felipe, which had set a convention of delegates to meet at Washington on the first day of March, 1836, and a proclamation from Governor Henry Smith, calling the election of these delegates.

Actually, General Sam Houston had already established his military headquarters at Washington by Christmas of 1835 and the partnership of John W. Hall and John ott had built a large log warehouse on the east side of Ferry Street near the river. There they were collecting supplies and munitions for the army.

By February 22, the remains of the strife-torn provisional government, headed by "Acting Governor" J. W. Robinson and with only three members of the General Council present, had moved to Washington. They expected

Wednesday, September 7, 1966 to present their quarrel with Governor Smith, whom they had attempted to depose, to the Convention.

Six days later, on February 28th, a group of business and professional men of the town banded together to lease from the firm of "Byars and Mercer, Merchants and Traders in the Town of Washington," an unfinished rough frame house at the corner of Ferry and Main. This was the largest building in town, some 30 by 50 feet.

The building was rented for three months, commencing March 1, "for the use of the members of the Convention to meet in." The owners contracted to have the building finished "in complete order and repaired" by opening day. Nobody kept this bargain.

The Convention only lasted 18 days; the lessees scattered to the army, the Runaway Scrape and other parts unknown, and no one would pay the lease money ($170) after the war was over. The owners were on rather shaky ground in pushing their claim. After all, they had not completed the building. There were no doors or windows in the place when the convention met on March 1. When a wet cold norther came up that night, the delegates were able to maintain mobility only through the liberal internal aPplication of antifreeze.

William Fairfax Gray, a Virginia gentleman touring Texas in the hope of buying up cheaj lands, came down the La Bahia road from Nacogdoches in mid-February. On Saturday morning, February 13, Gray approached the Brazos from the east.

"Arriving at the ferry," he wrote in his dairy, "we saw Capt. Sherman's Kentucky Volunteers on the opposite bank, drawn up in order, and a crowd of citizens, drawn up to receive them in military style, resembling in a striking degree, Falstaff's famous corps."

Entering the village Gray wrote, "it was a disgusting place . . . laid out in the woods; about a dozen wretched cabins or shanties constitute the city (later he was to establish the resident population at ten families) . . . not one decent house in it, and only one well defined street, which consists of an opening cut out of the woods. The stumps still standing. A rare place to hold a national conventionin." Another source says that the contract for clearing the street allowed a maximum stump height of 18 inches, which, of course, left clearance for the high-bed carts and wagons, but barked the shins of after-dark pedestrians.

VEST/sTfIC Street to within half a block of its intersection with Main, and turned into John Lott's Tavern, a crude frame building, across the street and a little over half a block south of Roberts' more imposing two-story log hostelry.

Lott's was, he explained in his diary, "the only place in the city at which we could get fodder for our horses."

The cuisine was evidently not all a Virginia gentleman might desire. Gray reported, "The supper consisted of fried pork and coarse corn bead and miserable coffee."

Nor were the accommodations exactly lavish. "It was a frame house, covered with clapboards," he reported, "a wretchedly made establishment, and a blackguard, rowdy set lounging about."

The building, he said, consisted of only one room, about 40 by 20 feet, with a large fireplace at each end and a shed at the back in which the table was spread. "The host's wife and children and about 30 lodgers, all slept in the same apartment, some in beds, some on cots, but the greater part on the floor."

The overcrowding at Lott's was ty pical throughout the village. In addition to this tavern and Roberts', there was a new boardinghouse, kept by the ubiquitous Widow Pamela Mann, who had just moved up from San Felipe when the center of government shifted. Every other room in every cabin and office was crowded to the hilt, and many people- were sleeping under their wagons or under trees.

Washington, from the time of Gray's arrival, until the break-up of the Convention on March 17th, was a veritable madhouse. The Convention itself brought 59: delegates and an assortment of clerks. The provisional government, with its small group of minor officials, was also in town. The municipality's court, with its lawyers, witnesses, civil and criminal contestants and officers, met on February 15th and ran well into the session of the Convention. In addition, a number of volunteer companies from the Redlands and from the United States marched through on their way to the war front at Gonzales.

Add to this the goodly crowd of merely curious citizens and a host of soldiers of fortune, prospective lenders Of funds to the new nation, and quite a few gamblers and camp followers, and you have sheer bedlam. It is safe to say that the town of dozen or more cabins was occupied by from 300 to 500 persons at various times during the

19 hectic. period. The cold, wet norther which struck on the night of March 1st alternated thereafter with mild, rainy spring days.

As Gray indicated, eating houses werefew and of low quality. Before many days, Gray moved his board to the Widow Mann's near Convention Hall, where General Houston was also living. The tab was $1.25 a day, and in no time Gray was complaining to his dairy that "the eating at our house is becoming sorry no butter, no milk, no sugar, little or no vegetables, and not much meat except pork."

Accounts of others indicate that there was no shortage of raw whiskey, or of those who would consume it.

Other amusement was furnished by the billard table at Martin, Clow and Company's place.

Not every citizen of the town was rough, ready and rowdy, however. The pious gunsmith, Noah Byars, whose shop was located not far from Convention Hall, would in a few years enter the ministry, becoming one of Texas' noted Baptist missionaries and founders of colleges. The surveyor, Kenny, was a Methodist preacher. Dr. Wm. P. Smith, who shared an office with Dr. Asa Hoxey, at the north end of town, was also a Methodist, whom one of his contemporaries described as "a dang sight better parson than pillroller." None of these men had yet organized a formal church, since the Mexican law forbade it, but quiet services in the homes of friends were allowed and were held quite frequently.

David Ayers, who ran a general store near the river on the west side of Ferry, was to organize the first Sunday School at Washington. Already he was noted for his quiet piety and for his stern rule that no one could work or cook at his house on Sunday. "Mind duty; leave events to God" was his favorite motto. Another, which seemed to have little impact on his neighbors, was "Wine in—wits out."

All in all, it was a drab and fairly representative village on the Texas frontier, this birthplace of our republic. Yet, during the exciting days of early March in 1836, it was the focus of attention of much of the civilized world. Big events transpired here in an amazingly brief time under the most trying of circumstances. It seems proper that the town of Washington should now be restored and the story of its claim to a place in the historic sun rescued from oblivion. —Texas Parade Magazine

Tornado warnings are announcements that a tornado has been sighted.

They give the storm's location and direction of movement. Communities are encouraged to develop their own reporting systems. Were it not for the actions of a few courageous Civil Defense workers in Hale Center, Texas, in 1965, an estimated 100 or more persons might have been killed instead of 4.

22 following list of precautions should be taken when a tornado is approaching: —Tornado cellar — When time permits, go to a tornado celler, cave, or any type of underground excavation which has an air outlet to help equalize air pressure. It should be kept ready for use, free wrom water, glass, or debris. Equip it with escape tools such as a pick, shovel, axe, hammer, crowbar, pliers, and screwdriver.

—Open country — Move at a right angle to the tornado's path. If there is no time to escape, lie flat in the nearest depression such as a ditch, ravine, or culvert. Beware of flash flooding. since a tornado usually travels forward at 25 to 40 miles per hour, you should be able to avoid it by driving your car at a right angle to its path. You probably can outrun it on an open road. If you canot escape it, abandon the auto and lie in a roadside ditch.

—In a city or town — seek inside shelter in a strongly reinforced building. emaller brick and masonry block buildings usually aren't reinforced and may collapse during a tornado. Stay away from windows. At home, the corner of the basement toward the tornado usually offers the greatest safety in frame houses. If there is no basement, you can get some protection by lying on the first floor under heavy furniture against an inside wall.

Doors and windows on the side of the house away from the tornado may be opened to reduce building damage.

—In school — If the school building is of strongly reinforced construction, stay inside, away from windows, and near an inside wall on a lower floor.

Avoid auditoriums and gymnasiums with large, poorly supported roofs. In rural areas, if the building is not strongly reinforced and no storm shelter is available, direct children to a ditch or ravine.

During unsettled weather, keep tuned to your local radio or television station for the latest tornadb advisory information. Watch the 'vieather. If you see a funnel aloft at a safe distance, telephone your local Civil Defense representative, local law enforcement agency, county sheriff's office, or Department of Public Safety headquarters. Give such information as the type of storm, its location, its direction, and its estimated speed of movement. Then give your name, address, and phone number.

THINGS YOU NEVER KNEW ABOUT YOUR SKIN If you are average, you have about six pounds and 17 square feet of skin: your body's largest organ and one of nature's most ingenious bags of tricks.

It fights off germs, warns of invasion, regulates body temperature, eliminates wastes and makes vitamin D from sun light — all this while trying to look its best!

Few people realize how thin-skinned - and thick-skinned — they are: 'skin deep" beauty varies from 1/8 inch on the sole of the feet to less than 1/25 inch over the eyelids. Nose, lips, ears, shoulders and knees are all thinskinned — an important point to remember next time you sunbathe. Incidentally, your skin thickens as well as darkens upon exposure to sun.

Good, bad or indifferent, the complexion you show to the world is actually a layer of dead cells — worth far more than its face value for its resistance to penetration by bacteria, viruses and other threats to health.

Below these top cells — which you slough off and replace by the billions each day — lie pigment-producing cells which determine how fair or dark you are.

On a still deeper level — your dermis or "true" skin — far more is going on than you'd ever suspect. Fanning out through it are millions of nerve endings, each specially constructed to deliver only one type of message: heat or cold, pain or pressure or touch.

A vast network of tiny blood vessels not only nourishes skin sells, but helps your body lose or retain heat by dilating in warm weather, constricting in cold. Two to three million sweat glands — clustering 3,000 to the square inch in some areas like the palms of the hands! --- cool the body and carry off wastes. On the average, they perspire a quart a day.

Insulating and lubricating your skin — but sometimes wreaking unholy and unlovely havoc — are the vital oil glands deep in the dermis. Chiefly because of them, nine out of ten young people have an acne problem at one time or another.

During adolescence, the oil glands become especially active. To complicate matters, the ducts through which-

Eventually, the oil ducts become enlarged — and harmful bacteria creep in through the skin's natural barriers because of lowered resistance of surrounding tissue. Blocked ducts provide the environment germs need to thrive in: moisture, food, warmth, protection from air and sun.

To combat acne, blackheads and oily skin, a four-way attack is indicated: oil, scales and grime must be removed, ducts unblocked, skin infection combatted, and pimples — present and future — deprived of favorable soil.

A new typ e of medicated pad, containing the anti-septic hexachlorophene, kills skin bacteria on contact and provides an anti-bacterial barrier while it cleans the skin of excess oil, softens blackheads and helps dry pimples. In addition an invisible film is formed over which makeup or after shave lotion can be applied — or it can be used as an after shave lotion.

Most skin specialists aree that acne is helped by these measures: sleeping at least eight hours a night and drinking at least six glasses of water daily; a diet that stresses lean meats, vegetables and fruits while skimping on fried and fatty foods, chocolate, nuts and sharp cheeses; plenty of fresh air and sunshine — but no sunburn; regular exercise.

Many sufferers don't know that tenseness and strain can stimulate oil glands. Emotional conflict can worsen acne.

By way ,of summary, there is no doubt that acne represents a serious problem to the teen-ager. It is also known that it may leace not only physical but emotional scars whose effect may extend into later life. And to, it may be well to realize that something effective can be done about this problem, and that often the simple expedient of correct skin care, combined with proper health routines, will go a long way toward alleviating the condition, or even abolishing it altogether.

VESTNitI‚ LATE GOVERNO TZ' q TS7F.T.L TREES EXPRESSES LOVE The wishes of James Stephen. Hogg, Texas' first native governor, that wild nuts be planted to perpetuate native Texas trees, is being honored through pecans harvested from Varner-Hogg Plantation tate Park near here.

Thousands of poUndS of pecans, both native and shelled, have been retained at the park to be distributed to visitors in keeping with Governor Bogg's writtend wishes in his own will filed after his death in 1906: "Let my children plant at the head of my grave a pecan tree and at my feet an old-fashioned walnut tree. And when these trees shall bear, let the pecans and walnuts be given out among the plain people so that they may plant them and make Texas a land of trees."

Visitors receive a small plastic container bearing the late governor's request and six pecans, comprising two native varieties and one each of James, Stuart, Frotcher and Moneymaker.

Supt. Joe Cariker said the 150 pecan trees on the 53-acre tract bore a substantial crop last fall. He said some of the trees date back to as early as 1920.

9 The giant trees, with their massive summer shade, provide a .forested settin g for the restored plantation home, containing rare furnishings dating back to the ante-bellum period.

The estate, easily accessible on West Columbia outskirts, after the former ;governor's death was donated to the state by Miss Ima Hogg. with an endowment designed "to perpetuate an appreciation of the simple, industrious and sometimes elegant life of the early settlers of Texas."

It is considered the historic showplace of the state parks system.
