BREAKING THROUGH BARRIERS FOR WOMEN AND GIRLS AAUW Mission Statement AAUW advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research.
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE March Madness from a different perspective Northern Ocean County Branch…. Women are smart; women are insightful; women are introspective; women are observant; women are sensitive and often women are very funny. Let us continue to make that personal connection. We have a lot going on in our Branch….. It was great talking with some of you new members in the last month. Glad to see that you are starting to evolve in our activities and events. We all need to be supportive and take the initiative to make our branch vibrant… Our Dinner and a Movie was very good. Thanks to “The Chelsea” for being so accommodating. This documentary surely challenges us to work hard and achieve more leadership positions for women and equal representation. Congratulations to the 8th grade recipients of our Essay Awards. Thanks to our members who reviewed their essays… Also, Thank You Helaine Donovan for agreeing to be our Scholarship Chair. Our AAUW-NOCB has two Scholarships that will be awarded in June 2012. A Look Ahead… Special Focus March/April… March 20, 2012 will be our Inter-Branch Meeting: The Guild Theatre Works performance of the play “Vanities”…. This play promises to be an entertaining perspective on friendships. Remember we will be hosting the Freehold Area Branch and Northern Monmouth County Branch on this evening… March 23, 2012 will be $tart $mart Workshop at Georgian Court University. A national speaker will provide an interactive workshop designed to give college women the confidence and skills they need to earn fair compensation. Contact me if you would like to attend and provide encouragement, support, and expertise as these young college students look to their future… April 14, AAUW-NJ will be the Annual Meeting at Forsgate Country Club. Information will be in the “Garden Statement” and a future E-Mail… April 19, 2012 will be 2012-2013 Budget Approval Meeting and Election of our Treasurer. Please contact me or a Board Member if you can help our branch and take responsibility for this position…. Honestly it is not that difficult and we need someone in this position…. The evening presentation will be “Unshredded Nostalgia” Antique Evaluations for $5.00… Please bring your Treasures to be evaluated. Also, Flower Power orders must be complete in accordance with the guidelines by our fundraising Chair Maureen Mitchell… Both are Fundraisers for our AAUW-NOCB… Advance Calendar: May 15, 2012 will be “Hidden New Jersey; Lots of Fun Facts” … June 19, 2012 will be our annual Deck Dinner at the home of Barbara Tuzio … All in perspective... energize your life AAUW-NOCB…..
FLOWER POWER - OUR BIG FUNDRAISER FOR SCHOLARSHIPS
We Depend On You The Northern Ocean County Branch will again use the Flower Power fundraising campaign for our scholarship fundraising event and we depend on your participation! By now, most of you have received the Flower Power email showing all of the products that are available for sale. Our lofty goal is $2000, which means that our profit from this event is $1,000 as Flower Power gives us half of our sales. (See the scholarship flyer on the next page.) Please take the time to browse through the brochure. I am sure that there will be an item that you would like to add to your garden. Also, this fundraiser allows you to forward the Flower Power email to your own personal email list which multiplies the number of people who can see it and purchase bulbs or flowers. Last year I sent my email to friends and family all over the United States and they ordered. Since their orders are delivered directly to them, all the work is done by Flower Power. For those who do not like to order online or would like a brochure and order form to share with friends and family, I will provide these with a collection envelope to return to me. The sale ends April 13. You can email me at email@example.com or call me at 732-295-3926 and I will personally deliver the materials to you. Thank you for your support! Remember, this is our major fundraiser for our Scholarship of $1,000 so please help! Maureen K. Mitchell

Cozy Quilters Upcoming Meetings at 2PM March 7 at the home of Barbara Corbin March 22 at the home of Maria Sendzik April 5 at the home of Marie Hagemann April 26 TBA The last few months the Cozy Quilters met at Barbara Tuzio’s, Marie Hagemann’s and Maria Sendzik’s. Maria likes to make an after-Christmas fruitcake which was picture perfect and good to eat. Marie had a delicious Mincemeat pie and Barbara made a beautiful vanilla spiral bundt cake. To say the least, we were not watching our diets. Norine Murdock joined us for the first time, and as usual, Irene and Judith are in their winter southern homes. Maria gave the group fat quarters and a challenge to make a “do it yourself” Christmas gift. Barbara is using a collection of Oriental fabrics to make the pattern “Neighbor’s Fence.” She has finished the top and is now quilting it. Marie was finishing up a “Wonky” quilt for her grand-daughter called “Flights of Fancy” that Maria also did in Batik fabrics. Marie chose soft pinks and browns. Norine was working on transforming kitchen towels into a pillow. As always, we chat away as we sew, and have “show and tell” of our latest projects. We discuss new projects and share patterns. All in all, fun times and all are welcome.

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FUND The latest edition (Winter 2012) of AAUW Outlook magazine features articles on AAUW’s most recent research report “Crossing the Line: Sexual Harassment at School” which was released in November. The report presents the findings of a nationwide survey of middle and high school students about their experiences with sexual harassment. Linda Hallman, AAUW Executive Director and Carolyn Garfein, AAUW President, encourage all of us to read the articles and to take some action through our branches. The full report may be viewed online. Funding for all AAUW research is through the AAUW Funds, specifically the Eleanor Roosevelt Fund. . Barbara Tuzio, EOF
