ARTISTIC STATEMENT What makes a poem work for me? What do I look for in a poem?
Emeniano Acain Somoza, Jr. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. You can call me an unadventurous purist, or stuck-up conservative, and I will give you all the props to be avant garde, modernist, beatnik, or scientific, but your poem still must tell a story in a clearly uplifting sort of way.
