When it comes to wine, visitors to British Columbia can enjoy loads of options. But that hasn’t always been the case.

In 1990, there were less than 20 wineries scattered across the vast landscape of Canada’s most westerly province. And the wines themselves left a little to be desired. No one but a handful of visionaries saw any real potential for grape growing and winemaking in B.C.

What a difference a couple of decades make. Flip the switch to 2012 and there are just shy of 210 grape wineries in the province. The landscape of backyard and backdoor facilities has morphed into quaint and welcoming tourist facilities, while warehouse-type operations evolved into wine country tourism masterpieces and cornerstones. Today there’s an abundance of crisp and aromatic whites and luscious Icewines and assorted desert wines – plus an endless flow of ripe and juicy reds. The varied winegrowing pockets of the province deliver micro-climates that make it possible to grow a broad range of varieties not previously expected to thrive. So not only is there an abundance of Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Ehrenfelser and Pinot Noir, but the vineyards are filled with Syrah, Petit Verdot, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes that truly deliver in the glass and have wowed enthusiasts and critics worldwide. There are now almost 10,000 acres of planted grapes, comprised of more than 60 varieties, compared to 1,400 acres two decades before. And the ratio of red to white is actually 52 to 48 per cent, with the top planted grape being Merlot. Despite the change in the economic climate in recent years, B.C.’s wine industry is still in a growth pattern. Twenty-seven new wineries have opened their doors since 2010. Wine sales have increased more than 20 per cent since 2009. Meanwhile, the average price of a bottle of B.C. VQA wine was $17.49 in 2011. That’s actually a slight drop from the 2010 price of $17.56 and more than a dollar cheaper than it cost in 2009 demonstrating that despite continued growth, winery proprietors recognized the economic realities. Numbers aside, B.C. wines are impressing consumers and critics where it counts the most – in the glass. The hardware from international competitions is piling up and it’s rare when wines from the province get shutout. Local wines have captured the imagination of Hollywood stars and royalty. With so much accomplished in so short a time frame, the future looks bright for B.C. wines.

Vineyard Timeline February to March Pruning – The vines and vineyards are prepped for the approaching growing season.

Late April to Early May Bud Break –Vines “bleed” water and tiny buds appear between the vine and leaf stem.

June to July Blossom – Small clusters form on young shoots and flower - pollination and fertilization of the grapevine. Fruit Set – Follows immediately after blossoming - fertilized flower develops grape berry.

September to October Harvest – Grapes reach peak ripeness and brix levels for dry to off-dry table wines and are picked at different intervals depending on location and variety.

August Veraison – Signifies the start of ripening when hard green berries begin to change colour, soften and develop sugar and flavour.

October to November Late Harvest – Grapes left to hang to maximize sugar development and dehydrate to concentrate flavours, or undergo Boytritis Cinerea (Noble Rot) are picked for dessert wines.

November to February Ice Wine Harvest – Grapes left on the vine for Ice Wine are harvested when temperatures drop below -8 C and the berries freeze on the vine.

BRITISH COLUMBIA Regions THOMPSON Okanagan The Okanagan Valley is B.C.’s largest and oldest wine appellation and has experienced unprecedented growth over the last two decades. The Okanagan is an ecological wonder. It stretches more than 100 kilometres and is arid, receiving less than 30 mm of precipitation annually. Okanagan Lake fills most of the valley floor and offers welcome respite from the blistering summer heat. An additional attraction is the vast array of wildlife species, including big horn sheep, cougars, burrowing owls and even rattlesnakes. The Okanagan is home to Canada’s only desert, an extension of the Sonoran, which stretches up from Mexico. This divergent terrain has created unique microclimates in the various pockets of the valley. For that reason, you will find a profound diversity in the varieties of grapes and styles of wines produced here. History buffs will be drawn to the old frontier-like atmosphere and landscape of the Similkameen Valley, which stretches along Highway 3 to the historic town of Princeton. Back in the day, this region was known for ranching and gold mining and still retains a lot of that Western charm. Visitors on the Similkameen wine trail have been lured to the Similkameen river to try their luck at a little gold panning and prospecting. This arid, pastoral valley is home to a thriving tree fruit industry, in fact, Keremos one of the main towns on the wine route, is dubbed the Fruit Stand Capital of Canada. The Similkameen is one of the few regions that has yet to be tapped for its full potential for wine production. VANCOUVER ISLAND & Gulf Islands Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands wine region is far more humid, but is also blessed with microclimates that favour winegrowing. The Cowichan Valley, for example, enjoys rather dry summer months with just over 100 cm of rainfall annually. Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands have a longer growing season, a lower risk of frost in the spring and fall and little or no snow in the winter. These areas are more suitable for growing aromatic whites and lighter-style reds.  But fine wines are also being made from tree fruits, berries and even honey. Many island producers purchase grapes from the Okanagan to make fuller-bodied wines. This charming region harkens back to a simpler time, with an easy, casual approach to life. Agritourism is very strong with roadside and farm-gate produce at the ready. VANCOUVER, COAST & MOUNTAINS Growing conditions are similar in B.C.’s fourth primary wine producing region, the Fraser Valley, which has a collection of wineries in an area rich in agricultural roots. Its proximity to Vancouver makes it highly accessible and provides excellent opportunities for rural daytrips and urban excursions. Fraser Valley producers focus mainly on growing whites and lighter reds, along with picking up fruit from the Okanagan.

Kootenay ROCKIES The mountains and waterways have long attracted outdoor enthusiasts to the stunning Kootenay region of British Columbia. It hasn’t exactly been synonymous with wine. But that hasn’t stopped some forward thinking wine enthusiasts. The first winery opened here in 2001 in Trail, which is generally hot and dry during the summer, thus favourable for growing grapes. Today there are five wineries that make the Kootenays their home.

Vanco Thomp Coast uver, son Fraser & Mountains Okanagan , Valley

While its not yet recognized as a designated viticultural area in B.C., the province’s wine history has demonstrated an appreciation for risk-taking, progress and growth.

Road 13’s Philosophy: Our motto, “it’s all about the dirt,” reflects our belief that great wines start in the vineyard. Our wines express the special character of the South Okanagan’s renowned Golden Mile Bench. We firmly believe that our efforts in the vineyards are reflected in the final wines and that the art of winemaking is about creating a final bottle that, when opened and tried, conveys a very specific sense of place.

The winery is owned by the Cipes family and winemaker Eric von Krosigk oversees the portfolio of BC VQA wines. The mission of the entire Summerhill team is to produce exceptionally good tasting wines organically, support local organic food growers in the bistro, and provide unforgettable experiences for all its guests. Honored by the IWSC awards in London, England trophies for ‘Best Bottle-Fermented Sparkling Wine’ for Summerhill’s Cipes Gabriel in 2010, and ‘Canadian Wine Producer of the Year,’ as well as a host of other prestigious awards around the world, Summerhill is proud to offer guests the opportunity to ‘Celebrate Nature’s Perfection.’ Cipes Brut NV Made in the traditional French method, Summerhill’s flagship Cipes Brut is an Okanagan Valley classic. Recognized with a gold medal every year since its inception in 1991, this wine expresses notes of green apple, almond, pear and citrus. Cipes Rose NV Made from 100% organic Pinot Noir, this award winning dry sparkling rose expresses notes of strawberry, raspberry, cranberry, peach, apple, citrus and toast. Lang Vineyards… A benchmark winery on the Naramata Bench. In 1990, the vision of a winery for Mr. Güenther Lang came into reality when Lang Vineyards became the first “Farm Gate Winery” in British Columbia. Lang Vineyards pioneered wine growing in the region well known as the Naramata Bench in the Okanagan Valley. Signature wines, such as Farm reserve riesling, Marechal Foch, Gewürztraminer, Canadian Maple Wine and Riesling icewine, are offered amongst a full palette of 2011 specialty wines. The wines are unique and have created fanfare status with many wine drinkers, notably the Marechal Foch. This varietal is grown on the property and is made into a soft red wine that is the benchmark best seller for the winery. www.shuswapwineries.ca

This unique group of British Columbia wineries is located in one of the most northern grape growing areas in North America. Shuswap lake is the dominant feature in the region, spreading its four long arms between rolling evergreen covered hills. Each vineyard has its own individual micro climate which gives special character to the wines produced there.

Festivals & Events Wine Soaked Celebrations Summerhill Pyramid Winery, Kevin Trowbridge by Julianna Hayes

What do you get when you combine wine, food, music and art? A mighty fine party – and British Columbians know just how to throw one. Several festivals that celebrate the grape are offered at different intervals throughout the year. So if you time it right, you can truly enjoy all that B.C wine country has to offer through any number of unique experiences and venues. A number of festivals focus exclusively on local wines and are held in celebration of critical intervals throughout wine’s production period. For example, spring is a time of renewal with vineyards coming to life and this hope is reflected in the celebrations. Fall festivals toast the harvest and it’s not unusual to be served your wine by vintners with hands purple from the crush. Activities at this time celebrate the season’s bounty. Each region with a thriving local wine industry holds some sort of celebration during the year. Some are grassroots, held open air, in open fields where local wines flow freely alongside rustic regional, seasonal cuisine. Others feature a bit more glitz and glamour, held in formal settings and attract celebrities. You can take part in large tasting events featuring 50-plus wineries and hundreds of wines. But you can also opt for more intimate dinners, where food is prepared and served to enhance and showcase a select number of wines. A couple B.C. festivals are international in focus, while still embracing regional producers. They recognize that local wines need to stand in a world-wide market and provide an opportunity for consumers to sample B.C. products side-by-side with their foreign competitors.

Day Tripping Let’s Hit the Road

by Julianna Hayes

With more than 200 wineries beckoning you to their doorstep, planning a tour in B.C.’s wine country may seem an impossible task. But don’t sweat it. We’ve got some suggestions to help you put together a memorable wine-focused adventure – stress free. Consider the four Ws – who, what, when and where. Let’s start with “Who” – Who is taking the tour? You’ll want to design your trip to meet the needs of your individual group. If this is a family vacation, then you’ll need to explore kid-friendly options so the young ones are entertained while the adults sip wine. Is Rover going along for the ride? Some wineries provide designated pet areas to keep animals cool and hydrated. What – What is your mode of transportation? Are you driving, cycling or flying? There are wineries grouped together in certain pockets creating wonderful opportunities for a bike tour. There are places now that have heli-pads so visiting by helicopter is a unique wine adventure. People travelling by RV may want to consider wineries off the beaten path in locales close to camping. Wine tour companies offering buses or vans and a designated driver are a safe and cost-effect option for group travellers. When – Peak season visitors have a breadth of choices, as all wineries will be open, but will find booking hotels a bit of a challenge. The opposite is true, of course, for off-season travellers who may discover a large number of wineries have limited hours, open by appointment only or have shutdown completely. But they won’t have to contend with crowds and may get great deals on accommodation. Where – There are five designated viticultural areas – Okanagan, Fraser Valley, Similkameen Valley, Vancouver Island and Gulf Islands, as well as a few wine producers off the beaten path. Within each region there are wineries grouped together ideal for a one-day tour or a week-long exploration. Choosing where you want to go may be as simple as selecting a winery you admire and always wanted to visit and then scoping out other places nearby. PAGE 34 PHOTO CREDIT

Once you have the four Ws down, consider the kind of experience you want to have. Are you environmentally conscious? There are wineries that grow organically or use biodynamic farming practices. Several are LEED-certified. Are you a foodie? Many wineries have their own restaurants and embrace seasonal and regional cuisine. Lastly, don’t over plan. Allow for some flexibility and spontaneity in your wine tour. B.C. wine country is full of surprises. • You’ll find burgundy and white Wine Route signs along major highways and roadways to help guide you to your destinations. • Designate a responsible driver. • Respect the land – While wineries more than encourage visitors, many of them are still working farms so ask for permission before you go exploring or decide to have a vineyard picnic. And leave it as you found it – taking all garbage and recycling with you. • Some wineries charge a small fee for tastings. This is simply to offset the cost of the wine they pour – which can really add up in a season. Often this fee is reimbursed when wine is purchased.

• The first vineyards were set up 140 years ago by Father Charles Pandosy at the Obelate Mission near Kelowna s. The purpose was to make sacramental wines for his parish. • The first commercial vineyards were planted in 1926 and early wines were bottled under names like Fuddle Duck and Hot Goose. Vineyards were dominated by French hybrids. • The Free Trade Agreement in the mid 1990s was the turning point for the industry as it opened up the Canadian market for imports. To compete, vintners pulled up less desirable vines and replaced them with traditional noble vinifera varieties. This was the catalyst for remarkable growth.

British Columbia Wine Tour Handbook

The Okanagan Valley The largest of the five British Columbia appellations, the Okanagan Valley is anchored by Highway 97 that snakes its way from north to south. This makes touring by car easy, but the sheer breadth of the region calls for several individual trips – and even then you won’t cover it all. The valley is arid - receiving less than 30 mm of precipitation annually - and is lined by mountains and filled with lakes. One of the key features is Okanagan Lake, 135 kms long, deep and home to the legendary but elusive creature called Ogopogo. The Okanagan also features Canada’s only desert, an extension of the Sonoran, which stretches up from Mexico. This divergent terrain has created unique micro-climates and soil types in the various pockets of the valley. For that reason, you will find incredible diversity in the varieties of grapes and styles of wines produced here. North Okanagan • Vernon – the oldest and second largest city in the valley and a short drive from Silver Star Mountain ski resort. • Armstrong – the cheese capital of Canada. • Salmon Arm – Located on Shuswap Lake, Salmon featuring more than 400 km of gorgeous shoreline and is considered a world-class mecca for houseboating. • Falkland – known for is flag-waving Canadian spirit and home to perhaps the largest Canadian flag in the nation.

Central Okanagan • K elowna/West Kelowna – includes the valley’s largest city; featuring miles of sandy beaches hugging the shores of Okanagan Lake. You’ll find Big White ski resort nearby. This is where grape growing got its start in the 1800s. Numerous wineries located here forming Kelowna’s Wine Trail. • L ake Country – known as the Apple Capital of Canada and set in a picturesque pocket of rolling hills and lakes.

South Okanagan • Peachland – epitomizes beaches and peaches and Ogopogo’s hometown • S ummerland – Featuring the Kettle Valley Railway; Summerland ornamental gardens; a salmon hatchery; and the Bottleneck Drive wine trail. • P enticton - sandwiched between two lakes - Okanagan Lake and Skaha - and just a short drive from Apex Mountain ski resort. There’s a river channel in the heart of the city that draws thousands of tubers each year. • N aramata – a captivating benchland that winds its way along the southeastern tip of Okanagan Lake. It features a high concentration of wineries and is an ideal spot for a bike tour.

South Okanagan

Okanagan Falls / Similkameen Valley

South Okanagan • Okanagan Falls – has an old west flavour and one of the main attractions is McIntyre Bluff, vertical cliffs which rise 250 meters on the edge of Vaseaux Lake, a wildlife preserve. Home to the Corkscrew Drive wine trail. Similkameen Valley Look for the west turn off to the Crowsnest Highway (Highway 3) between Penticton and Okanagan Falls in the south portion of the Okanagan Valley to explore this up and coming wine appellation. The highway crosses the Similkameen river, which was the hub of a local gold rush. This region has a decidedly rural feel with ranches, wineries and fruit farms dotting the landscape. • Keremeos – known as the “Fruit Stand Capital of the World.” • C awston – an agricultural center with two fruit packing plants, one for organic produce - a fastgrowing segment of the area’s economy.

South Okanagan • Oliver – Known as the Wine Capital of Canada, as it has the highest concentration of wineries and vineyard anywhere in the nation. The area features two premium growing areas – the Golden Mile and Black Sage Bench, with just about every square inch filled with lush rolling vineyards. Where there are no vines, you’ll find an abundance of fruit trees and you’ll be hard pressed during the summer months not to find something fresh and delicious to snack on. Oliver features a small, picturesque lake - Tuc El Nuit – serves as a welcome summertime respite for boating, paddling, fishing or just fro cooling of. During the off-season, nearby Mt. Baldy ski resort is a quick winter getaway. • Osoyoos – The most southerly vineyards in the province surround this foot of this vibrant community, which sits just before the U.S. You’ll find an interpretative desert centre here, where you can learn about indigenous plants and animals - perhaps catching a peak at a burrowing owl or rattlesnake. Osoyoos boasts the warmest freshwater lake in Canada, extending watersports and activities. A number of fine resorts line the lake’s banks or can be found nearby.

Fraser Valley The scenic Fraser River winds its way from Hope to the Fraser Valley, east of Vancouver, where a small collection of wineries have set roots thanks to a unique microclimate that kisses the area, otherwise known for its rainfall. Wineries can be found in and around deeply agricultural pockets of lush farmland and near dense urban settings in Langley, Abbotsford, Surrey, Chilliwack, Richmond and Delta. Those who want to combine a big city visit complete with shopping, shows and nightlife, should consider this area for its proximity to the province’s largest city Vancouver.

Vancouver Island :: Gulf Islands

Vancouver Island and Gulf Islands More than two dozen producers of grape and fruit wines and ciders wines now make their home on Vancouver Island and neighbouring isles. It’s hard to beat this coastal setting for its pure esthetic appeal, with its rugged shoreline and pastoral feel. Some say coastal British Columbia is where the Okanagan was a decade ago and that there is the possibility of 50 or more wineries thriving on Vancouver and the Gulf Islands. The area has a deep focus on seasonal and regional farming, producing everything from balsamic vinegar to spring lamb, Saskatoon berries to asparagus, fresh farm-baked bread and produce. The islands enjoy a temperate climate. Though not as hot and dry as in the Okanagan, island growers have a longer season with less risk of early or late frost. British Columbia Wine Tour Handbook

Those craving a grassroots experience will enjoy the family-run cottage like feel of the wine industry here. Wineries on Vancouver Island can be found clustered in Cowichan Valley, Duncan, Nanaimo, Saanich Pennisula, Sooke and close to the capital city of Victoria. Wineries can be found on the following Gulf Islands: Pender, Saturna, Hornby, Salt Spring, and Quadra. The Kootenays Travelling east of the Okanagan Valley on Crowsnest Highway, you’ll wind your way through a vast and breathtaking terrain. The Kootenays feature an abundance of lakes and four parallel mountain ranges, beginning with the Monashees from the west. This is a region appreciated for its ruggedness, for its hot springs, for its glacial waters and for its pristine and formidable wilderness parks. But you’ll find wine here too, namely in south central communities between Trail and Creston. You could potentially visit all five wineries in one day, but are better to split it up and take in other regional sights - stopping in Trail and Thrums on day one and going to Creston and Wynndel on day two.

DINING OUT You Gotta Eat Here

Sunset Organic Bistro, Kevin Trowbridge

by Julianna Hayes

A trip to B.C. wine country would not be complete without a meal or two at a fine dining establishment with a great local wine list, or at a winery restaurant. At fine independent eateries, on-staff sommeliers have the task of procuring wines, managing the cellar, and training the hospitality staff on wine service. These people know their stuff and are able to make suggestions on wines that will best complement each food item on the menu. This pays off for both the restaurateur and the winery since the consumer usually has a wining and dining experience they won’t soon forget. The same is true at winery restaurants. While the selection of wines might focus on own products, many embrace producers from other local wineries. Restaurants with a thoughtful food and drink program try to showcase selections to their best advantage. Many dishes will infuse recommended wines to create the ideal match. There’s another reason to choose restaurants which have a solid local wine list. They are often the only or last source for certain wines, particularly those highly sought after by consumers, selling out within a short time of release. It makes sense to allow restaurants to showcase wines in the best light possible – with great food. An excellent wine really shines when it’s paired with first-rate cuisine.

Tourism British Columbia

by Julianna Hayes

Your inspiration for visiting British Columbia may be its wine, but depending on the length of your stay you may be compelled to step off the wine trail and take in some of its other incredible experiences and attributes. The province is loaded with options for those with an adventurous mind. Consider a whale watching, fishing, zip line or gold panning excursion. Climb a mountain, take a hike or cycle a trail. Take a train, floatplane or helicopter tour. Relax by setting aside time for a trip to a botanical garden, hot spring, lavender farm or cheese maker. Consider also that B.C. is home to a desert interpretative centre, old growth forests and marine-life migration points. It’s a golf and ski mecca and offers snowmobiling and boating opportunities, as well as some of the most beautiful beaches anywhere. B.C. also offers a variety of diversified arts and cultural experiences to enrich the visitor experience. There are ballet companies, theatre groups, galleries and museums. On their tours, they’ll find symphonies, chamber orchestras, jazz clubs and multi-cultural centres. The streets are home to public art. The parks are filled with buskers and craftspeople. And many wineries, which once offered only wine to those who appeared on their doorsteps, now have added cultural components to their venues. Several have constructed outdoor amphitheatres, PAGE 49 PHOTO CREDITS (L to R)

which provide concert series or theatre productions during the summer months. Some have onsite art galleries featuring local artisans. Others offer cooking classes and educational wine seminars. There are organizations which embrace the province’s First Nations heritage and others that have made B.C. their home. There are also festivals dedicated to music, theatre, art and wine, and ones that combine them all.

Accommodation Stay Awhile and Enjoy the View

by Julianna Hayes

Travellers to British Columbia wine country come from all walks of life. There are those with the taste and demands of royalty and the budget to match. Others are looking for affordable but comfortable accommodations for their vacation. And then there are those who seek a rugged experience consisting of little more than a tent and a fire pit. Whatever your preference, B.C. has options to meet every need, desire and financial reality. Travellers here can opt to bed down at a five-star resort or escape to the backcountry. They can set up at an RV park or book a room at a family-friendly motel with a waterslide and games room. Their accommodations could overlook the ocean or a lake, vineyard, nature preserve or lively city street. Visitors can splurge on room service, indulge in an on-site spa and valet service, or choose a campsite to cook over an open fire at a remote locale. That’s the beauty of B.C. One only needs to do a bit of research to find something that fits the bill.

B.C. Living It’s Home

BC Parks

by Julianna Hayes

After a few days in B.C. wine country, you have no doubt found yourself slowing by for sale signs and looking at real estate ads. And who can blame you? B.C. is one of the most desirable places to live in Canada, courtesy of its climate and profound beauty. Imagine, if you will, waking up daily to a vineyard view, or having a lake, mountain or ocean in your front or backyard. B.C., like most regions in the world, has felt the effects of the economic down turn in recent years. Housing sales have rebounded somewhat, and investors and developers are once again seeing the possibilities that exist in this incredible region. But excellent relocation options still exist, providing terrific value for motivated buyers. And who wouldn’t want to live here? Residential options range from contemporary, urban facilities to remote country settings, luxurious waterfront developments to scenic snowy getaways high in B.C.’s mountainscapes. There are opportunities to settle among the vineyards or along the countless golf courses which pepper B.C.’s landscapes.
