A Partner for M&A projects in R&D and Innovations You might be familiar with the following situation: Several years ago a promising innovation project was started in your company. It enjoyed a lot of management attention and tremendous amounts of various resources were invested in the corporate innovation project. The team put long hours and all of their energy in the project. Everyone cheered as the prototypes and first market validations turned out to be very convincing. The project was able to generate significant market traction and the future looked really good. Everybody was satisfied.  Suddenly, a change in corporate strategy or a specific outside event linked to the overall business environment occurred. Maybe it has missed the cut to move forward at an important innovation funnel review meeting by just a few inches. Whatever has happened, the project's former top priority status has been eroding at an accelerated speed. Quickly it has become obvious that the organisation has completely lost its interest in the specific technology. The involved key people who have been working on this project with high intensity for years just cannot believe this sudden change - especially as the technology per se is moving forward very nicely and the future of the addressed market still looks bright. But let us face it. Your company is just no longer the best place for this project.  Now what will you do about it? The standard project shut down procedure comprises assigning the project team to other projects, letting the IP department know that they can get rid of the cumulated, but now obsolete IP at the next house cleaning session, and explaining to the corporate controllers that the project expenses are no sunk cost, but they have to be classified as highly valuable non-tangible investments in corporate technology know-how. Normally, this does the trick and you should perform the shut down as quickly and silently as possible.  But in a specific class of projects, you should substantially deviate from the standard procedure: If the project stands a good chance of being transferable to a third-party company, then we should talk. Your project might be one of the rare Golden Eggs that are able to generate significant value added for your company.
