49ERS LOSE POST SEASON BATTLE AGAINST SAN DIEGO

LB’s Hopes & Dreams Dashed In Sweep The Beach’s season came to an end with a sweep by scores of 25-22, 30-28, 25-19, against the No. 18-ranked University of San Diego in the opening round of the NCAA’s. The 49ers fought hard, but the more experienced team of seniors for the Toreros won the day. The match ended up being mostly about defense. Five Toreros reached double

figures in digs led by Amy DeGroot's 15, who also had a team high 17 kills. San Diego had 75 digs as a team and hit for a match .222 hitting percentage to LB’s .178 San Diego also posted 4 service Aces. LB had early leads in all three sets but could not maintain the consistency that has betrayed them at times all season. Long Beach was led by junior outside hitter Caitlin Ledoux who collected a team-high 13 kills, followed by 11 from Page 1 Continued On Page 2

freshman Haleigh Hampton, who hit a team-best .478 in her first NCAA tournament appearance. Junior libero Lauren Minkel made a match-high 22 digs. Disappointing as it was, the 49ers hope to build on the experience its young players gained this year for the future. Some Quotes Of The Game: USD head coach Jennifer Petrie said. "I'm just extremely proud of the way our team played tonight," "I think every time we play Long Beach State, it's just a supreme battle. They're such a skilled team, and well coached." "We're just really fortunate right now to have some really great go-to hitters in clutch situations," Petrie also said. "We had some really clutch serving at the end. Tough serving that took Long Beach out of system and gave us some opportunities." Coach Gimmillaro had this to say, "USD made some spectacular plays today and they deserve to be successful," "From our side, it was disappointing. We weren't tough enough. Our serving wasn't very good. We passed well, played defense well, but we had breakdowns at crucial times." Having late season injuries added to the pressure for the young team. Gimmillaro added this comment of his players, "I think they just wanted to prove themselves tonight," "We had leads, but we missed four serves," "You miss four serves in a game this close, it's a tough thing because we missed them at really crucial times." As Boosters, the season may not have ended in the way that we wished, but this is a team that is in the process of making small major steps, so join us in the spring workouts and prepare yourself for another exciting year in 2011.
