Sound Sleep Beds Just how old is your bed? Have you got the Seven Year Hitch? If you want to get the best possible night’s sleep so you look and feel your best, we recommend you start to think about replacing your bed after seven years. “A mattress that looks OK, may not actually be OK, that’s the hitch!” Even after seven years, your bed may look okay but it may not be giving you the support or comfort you need for a healthy, refreshing night’s sleep. Here’s just some of the reasons why: A study by The Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA) showed beds that were just six years old were much less comfortable than a new one. A study by The Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA) showed that beds as little as six years old could offer significantly less support and comfort than a new one, thanks to wear and tear not just from body weight and movement but also sweat and debris such as skin, scales, hair etc. (Investigating the life of a mattress, a study devised and conducted by FIRA

International for the National Bed Federation, 2011). Top sleep expert Dr Chris Idzikowski found buying a new bed could be more effective than sleeping tablets! Research by leading sleep expert Dr Chris Idzikowski, which measured the amount and quality of sleep people were getting on a new bed compared to their old one, found that, when replacing an uncomfortable bed, a new bed was associated with an increase of 42 minutes sleep. Dr Idzikowski commented that “research on Over The Counter (OTC) sleep aids has never shown a better improvement than 5-10 minutes extra sleep. (New Bed Old Bed Study by Dr Chris Idzikowski, commissioned by The Sleep Council 1998.) Yuk! On average we lose half a pint of fluid each night and shed a pound of dead skin cells a year. No wonder asthmatriggering dust mites love our mattresses. The UK has one of the largest number of asthma sufferers in Europe – five million plus and growing. Over 2000 fatalities a year are attributed to asthma. Dust mites are a major trigger for

asthma. We lose up to half a pint (284ml) or more of fluid each night – which our beds have to absorb and we shed around 1.3oz (10gm) of skin per week – that’s over 1lb (520g) in a year – much of into our beds. This combination of a warm and moist environment, coupled with a ready food source (those skin scales) makes our beds an ideal habitat for dust mites. According to the Medical Entomology Centre, Cambridge, just two micrograms per gram (mcg/g) of dust mite allergen can cause hypersensitivity in asthma sufferers, while 10 mcg/g can pose a serious health risk. Around one in five aged mattresses can contain between two and 10mcg/g of the dust mite allergen and one in 20 has above 10mcg/g. At Sound Sleep we understand that changing your bed regularly is very important, but can also be a costly thing to do each time. Our bodies are important to us, so we have to look after them in the most cost effective way. We have over 100 beds available to try in store, starting from the more

economy mattresses, pocket sprung mattresses and even mattresses with pressure relieving support foams like memory foam, latex, geltex and now the brand new Slumberland Affinity Foam. Our mattress specialists are highly trained in mattress technology and are able to assist you to make the right decision for your body and for your pocket. We don’t high pressure anyone, but we do recommend asking for help and advise as this will help you make an informed decision. Remember it’s not only your bed that needs changing regularly, your bedding does too. Our bedding department is stocked full of great pillows, duvets and mattress protectors to help aid a restful nights sleep. Lydia’s walk Ten year-old school girl, Lydia Hawker, has raised £1500 towards the community project for her family’s Wymondham church after walking a mammoth 100 miles along Hadrian’s Wall. The epic sponsored eight-day trek that included driving rain and steep hills did not deter the plucky youngster, a competitive gymnast at Norfolk Academy. “I knew I could do it. I did not have a single blister or feel tired afterwards,” said Lydia having completed a brief training in the Peak District. With the help of 45 sponsors her efforts brought a further cash booster to Hope Community Church’s flourishing community hub at Ayton Road, Wymondham. Hub Community Project is enriching the community after church members have dug deep to provide £200,000 for the building which they share. Lydia was accompanied by her mother, Selina, and grandmother during the school holidays last year. The three generations of walkers averaged 12 miles a day across industrial and scenic landscapes in the north of England. They finished the final stretch after a gruelling 16 miles. “I never imagined Lydia would finish it when we walked through two days of endless rain at the beginning. One day I needed four changes of rain jacket to keep dry and Lydia’s socks were soaking,” said Selina who helped plan the route with daily

provisions and a residential base. Hope Community Church and Hub Community Project moved from Fairland Street to their new premises last May. Activities have grown in line with the town’s expansion, providing much needed community facilities and activities to enrich the community. “This dream has been made possible by the commitment and sacrificial giving of church members who provided £200,000 for the building alterations,” says church leader, Grantley Watkins. “The improved facilities and ample parking have enabled people to access the community facilities with greater ease. The resulting growth of the community projects, with their widening resources, is established evidence for the need of the site’s second development phase which is expected to increase the activities of the community rooms threefold,” says Mr Watkins. The town’s Hub Community Project includes support for carers, youth, families and the lonely. It also provides ESOL (English for speakers of other languages) lessons and award-winning ‘Hoppers’ toddler groups. GENERAL New Buckenham Art Exhibition I think it would be fair to say that the New Buckenham Exhibition over the twenty years has built up quite a reputation for being a quality show. It has always been held over the Easter Weekend and this year is no exception. The Opening Night is Friday 25th March starting at 7.30 p.m. and finishing at 10 p.m. admission is £3.00 and this includes your glass of wine and nibbles. It is always a special night where lots of people gather as soon as the doors are open to find their very special picture. Many are sold on this evening and often to people who have bought a picture at the exhibition before. However if you prefer a more calm leisurely viewing then the Saturday, Sunday, or Monday are the days to go and enjoy this cultural event. The exhibition is open on Saturday 26th Sunday 27th and Monday 28th March from 11.a.m to 4.30 p.m. Admission is £1.00

I think it is fair to say there is something for everyone. Remember the dates and bring your family and friends and maybe you find a painting to buy. For further details contact Hazel Rush email: hazelrush@ btconnect.com

The exhibition varies from year to year as new artists exhibit. However there are some artists that have been exhibiting with us since it opened twenty years ago. The quality is always good and it seems to get better each year. There is an interesting mix of

Word Premiere! New Lexus LC 500h luxury 2+2 coupe Lexus unveiled its LC 500h luxury 2+2 coupe to the world’s media in Holland this month. Tim Barnes-Clay was at the event in The Hague to find out all about the new model. The LC 500h is important because it signals the next phase in the evolution of Lexus. It blends the dynamic luxury, ultra-rigid, inertia-tuned chassis and lightweight multi-link front suspension of the recently revealed ‘normal’ petrol-powered LC 500, with a brand new Multi Stage Hybrid System. This fresh tech adds a new automatic transmission to the established attributes of Lexus’s full hybrid powertrain to deliver the sharpest and most refined drive from a full hybrid yet, with much stronger and uninterrupted acceleration. The LC 500h features all the elements of a traditional full hybrid powertrain, including a 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine, a powerful electric motor and a lithium-ion battery, together with a fourspeed automatic gearbox, mounted at the rear of the hybrid transmission. The electric motor generates better acceleration feel than a conventional engine, and the introduction of physical gears allows for engine revs to be more closely matched to the driver’s use of the throttle The result is a much more direct connection between pedal inputs and vehicle acceleration, with nought to 62mph brought well into the sub-five-second range. Looks-wise, the Japanese motor manufacturer has given the LC 500h classic coupe proportions and has produced an exterior www.DispatchMagazine.co.uk

design that projects an avant-garde elegance. The coupe’s sporty profile is characterised by its sweeping roofline, which narrows rearward from above the centrally placed occupants to create a distinctive silhouette. It has a long, wheelbase, compact overhangs and a particularly low bonnet line. The bulging front and rear wings flare away from the midpoint of the car, housing wide, large-diameter wheels, while the door panels are pulled inwards, creating a commanding three2016 March | 11

brighter L-shaped LEDs which creates a strong three-dimensional effect.

The LC 500h also has its own lighting signature, created by independent daytime running lights in an arrowhead configuration and ultra-compact triple LED headlamp units. At the rear the roof tapers down between beefy wheel arches, reinforcing the car’s broad and unwavering stance. Here the lighting arrangement is distinguished by a sequence of increasingly

The LC 500h’s astonishing driving dynamics are witnessed in restrained yet functional aerodynamic details. Vents in the front and rear wheel arches improve high-speed stability and a diffuser and rear spoiler manage airflow during performance driving. The dynamic luxury theme of the exterior is carried through into the LC 500h’s interior, which brings together grace, quality and

sophistication with a driver-focused cockpit. The area around the front passenger spreads outwards to create a comfortable and welcoming space. Alongside, the driver’s environment has been ergonomically designed to instil confidence and invite lively driving, with an intuitive layout of the controls and an excellent and supportive seating position. Special attention has been paid to the steering wheel design, with a change in the cross-sectional shape of the rim around its circumference to allow for variations in grip and twisting of the wrist. New, larger magnesium alloy paddle shifts have been profiled for easier hooking with the fingertips and have a more positive action. The information displays are arranged in order of importance, with the most critical positioned closest to the driver’s sightline. The instrument binnacle houses the latest development of the meter technology introduced in the Lexus LFA supercar, with a moving central ring. The centre console features the new generation Remote Touch Interface touchpad control. craftsmanship and fine attention to detail for which Lexus is internationally renowned. What’s more, the new LC 500h is fitted with the Lexus Safety System + package of active safety technologies, designed to help prevent an accident, or mitigate the consequences of an impact. The features include a millimetre-radar-controlled Pre-Crash Safety system that can detect both vehicles and pedestrians in the car’s path; All-speed Adaptive Cruise Control; Lane Keep Assist; and Automatic High Beam. The car will be officially launched in Europe in the spring of 2017. Reviewed by Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist - tweeting @ carwriteups 2016 March | 13

ELDERLY The Hearing Care Centre The Effects of Untreated Hearing Loss “What?”, “Huh?”, “Pardon me?”, “Would you mind repeating what you said? I couldn’t understand you.” If you or one of your friends or family members has a hearing loss, then these phrases will be very familiar to you! Many hearing impaired people are aware that their hearing has deteriorated but are reluctant to seek help. Maybe it’s just that they don’t want to acknowledge the problem, are embarrassed by what they see as a weakness, or believe that they can “get by” without using a hearing aid. According

16 | March 2016

to hearing loss charity Action on Hearing Loss, people take on average 10 years to address the effects of hearing loss before getting seeking help. But time and again, research shows us that untreated hearing loss can have a negative impact on social life, psychological well-being, cognitive ability and our overall health. Each can have farreaching implications that go well beyond hearing alone. In fact, those who have difficulty hearing can experience such distorted and incomplete communication that it seriously impacts their professional and personal lives, at times leading to isolation and withdrawal.

Studies have linked untreated hearing loss effects to: • fatigue, tension, stress and depression • irritability, negativism and anger • social rejection and loneliness • avoidance or withdrawal from social situations • reduced alertness and increased risk to personal safety • impaired memory and ability to learn new tasks • reduced job performance and earning power • diminished psychological and overall health

Fortunately, hearing loss is treatable. Hearing aids are currently the best option for individuals suffering from hearing loss, allowing them to hear many of the sounds they have been missing. Many different types of hearing aid are available, packed full of fantastic features and paying a visit to your local audiologist would allow you to better understand what options are available. Norfolk Open Days – FREE hearing checks. This month my team and have organised a series of Open Days in Norfolk to help encourage those with hearing loss to take the first step. The Open Days will allow you to book a hearing assessment free of charge, saving £20 off the normal consultation price.
