DISS Diss Museum Diss Museums Basil Abbott reminisces about his days as a cub Next year is the centenary of the Wolf Cubs; and we have had commemorative interest from both Diss packs. While doing a bit of research I finally found out something that puzzled me when I was a Cub. At the opening of the meeting we squatted in a circle and chanted, “A-ke-la, we’ll do our best.” A Sixer, who was head of six Cubs, would call, “Dyb, dyb, dyb, dyb” and we would answer, “We’’ll dob, dob, dob, dob.” No explanation of this was ever given. We just did it without question. We had some idea that it was all based on The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling; but, by the 1950s, this was not exactly regular reading. The cub mistresses were Akela, Bagheera

and Baloo. Not knowing any better, we pronounced it Bar-low. My eyes were opened this year when I finally found out that “Dyb, dyb, dyb, dyb” meant “Do your best,” while “Dob, dob, dob, dob” meant “Do our best”.

Easter holidays were spent doing Bob-a-Job, in the days when children could still go around knocking on strangers’ doors without danger. Weeding was my most hated job. The Cub and Scout hut was where the current one is on Heywood Road.

It had previously been a corset factory and had an air of going back into the past when you entered. We hope that local people will send in memories and items from their days as a Wolf Cub.

Had I known that “dyb” was spelt like that, rather than “dib”, I might have figured it out. But I suspect that Akela didn’t know either. It was all very moral and character-building, with many relics of its World War One origins. Semaphore was still one of the useful skills in the test card. We learned how to tie reef knots, clove hitches, sheet bends (good for dealing with a flapping sail), bowlines - some of which have occasionally come in handy in later life.

DISS Jackamans Solicitors HSBC Wills and Simplify Recently HSBC transferred its probate services business to Simplify, a large UK-based probate firm. The majority of wills made by HSBC named the bank as executor and clients have been sent codicils to sign to appoint Simplify to be the new executors. Choosing who you have as executors of your will is very important. Your executors must be trustworthy and unafraid of paperwork, because it is their job to administer your estate properly and in a timely fashion. Many people think that they cannot have a beneficiary as an executor, or that they must appoint a professional. This isn’t the case. Obviously, though, there can be situations in families where having independent

executors, or a mix between independent executors and family, can be helpful in preventing disputes after you die. It is important that you choose your executors carefully. If you are thinking of appointing a professional organisation to be your executors then you should try and research them and find out more about them. Are they well established? Are they easily contactable? Will your family be able to meet someone face to face or will they have to rely on doing everything via the internet or telephone? You should never sign a Will or codicil without giving it some serious thought and without taking the opportunity to review your will thoroughly. Some people think that it is expensive

to make a will. Many will writing companies, who are often uninsured, unregulated and who employ unqualified staff may frighten you about solicitors’ fees being excessively high but that is not the case. The truth is that a will is one of the most important documents that you will ever sign in your life. You don’t need to sign one every year, so spending a little bit of money to get your will right for, perhaps, the next ten years is actually money well spent. Solicitors will be happy to provide a fee quote and will often be cheaper than the will-writing and probate businesses.

any further advice, I would therefore urge you to research the proposed replacement executor, and take legal advice before signing anything. If you have signed a new will since your HSBC will then you need to be especially careful that you do not confuse matters by appearing to revoke your new will in favour of reviving your old one. Use your local solicitors, they’re on the High Street to help you. For further information contact Lorna Denton-Cardew on 01379 643555 or email lorna.dentoncardew@jackamans.co.uk. DISS Sound Sleep Beds Does Your Bed Go Bump in the Night? For most of us a third of our life is spent asleep, meaning the wear on our mattress over time is considerable, yet a staggering 25% of people wouldn’t consider changing their mattress – even after more than 10 years. It is hardly surprising then that 58% of the population complain of waking feeling stiff and achy. Take our Bed MOT (Mattress Obsolescence Test) to find out if you need a new bed. Answer yes or no to the following questions. • Is your bed seven years old or more? • Would it be embarrassing if the neighbours saw it without the covers? • Does it make suspicious noises in the night? • Did you have your best recent nights sleep in a bed other than yours? • Are your waking up more frequently un-refreshed and aching? • Do you and your partner roll towards each other unintentionally? • Are you too close to your partner to sleep comfortably?

If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, then it your bed has FAILED its MOT and a trip to Sound Sleep for some new bed or mattress advice is essential. The key with mattress buying is to try out as wide a variety of options as possible to find the most suitable mattress for you (and your partner). Given the amount of time you spend in bed, it is important to spend a reasonable amount of time in store trying out new ones, especially if you have been experiencing pains that could come from your existing mattress. It this instance, it may be worth having a chat with your chiropractor for some advice on what they advise is suitable for your back. At Sound Sleep, we stock a variety of brands and different types of mattresses, for example pocket sprung, memory foam, latex and so on. Each manufacturer has different mattresses that offer different levels of support and comfort. When mattress shopping, it is essential to ask for help. We are highly trained mattress specialists and are on hand to advise you, not to high pressure you in to buying something that may not be suitable.

• Is it sagging? • Does it feel lumpy in the night?

08 | October 2015

Following are just a few quick tips to consider when bed shopping.

How do I know which one is right for me? A mattress that is supportive and comfortable is important, but remember, your requirement for support will differ depending on your weight and build. The best bed for your back is not always a firm one. You need a bed that will provide the right support and comfort for you. When laying on your side, ideally your spine should be parallel to the mattress and your spine should not sag down or bow up. Also remember as we age, our support requirements change. A very firm mattress when you were 35 may not be so suitable when you’re 45, comfort is important too! Trying them out Give your self plenty of time and wear loose clothing, this helps you turn and get in and out of beds in store. Our Mattress Specialists will point you in the right direction. Try the advised mattresses for as long as possible to get a good ‘feel’ for them. If you sleep together, shop together Always shop with your partner, the bed must be suitable for both of you. As it is inevitable one of you may have to compromise! Size matters It is scientifically proven that couples sleep better in a bigger bed. The more space you have the freer you can move without

disturbing your partner. This is also a good idea if one or both of you get hot in bed. If you are thinking about just a new mattress, before coming to visit us in store, check what kind of base you have and it’s condition, as some bases may be unsuitable for a new mattress. We will of course be on hand to give you the correct advice and information. All of our divans and mattresses are sourced from National Bed Federation members, so what you are buying is exactly what it says it is, it’s made from new and clean materials and it meets the strict British Standard fire regulations. More information can be found at www.bedfed. org.uk Now that you have chosen a new bed and mattress, don’t forget that pillows are very important too. A cheap, unsupportive pillow can cause neck and back problems. These are just as important as your new mattress. For more help and advice, visit our in store Mattress Specialists who can talk you through all the pros and cons of various mattresses. We also pride ourselves on having the most up to date mattress technology (as well as the old fashioned technology too!). Sleep has never felt so good!

ATTLEBOROUGH Kerry Butcher Accountancy Services There is lots going on in the world of tax and finance at the moment Norfolk has been a great place to be over the last few weeks with the excitement of the Tour of Britain coming through many of the towns and villages at the beginning of September. The build up was great with lots of businesses taking part and decorating bikes in Attleborough – it seems quite sad to think that these are now gone and Attleborough doesn’t look quite as pretty – a big thank you to all those who organised and joined in – here at KBA we were really happy to join in the fun and we hope that you saw our bike (even though someone pinched our windmills!). We can’t quite believe that we have arrived at October, the year is in its final months and before we know it everyone will be mentioning the C word. Of course one of the main changes in the financial world for October is the increase in the minimum wage effective from 1 October 2015. This year the rates will be as follows: £6.70 per hour for 21 and over £5.30 per hour for age 18-20 £3.87 per hour for under 18 £3.30 per hour for apprentices. Make sure that you don’t get caught out and pay your staff the correct amounts with effect from 1 October 2015. Of course we will be making sure that we advise all of our payroll clients of the changing rates so that they don’t get caught out. If you currently prepare your own payroll but find that this change is the final straw or that the task is becoming more onerous with all of the changes, then why not come and talk to us here at KBA, we offer a payroll service that we adapt to your needs. Costs are very reasonable and charged on a quarterly basis.

www.DispatchMagazine.co.uk

No more worrying about filing those real time summaries and working out the PAYE to be paid, or fines for missing deadlines you didn’t know existed – all of this can be taken care of by us and it will probably costs a lot less than you think. Why not come and talk to us about how we can help you? Of course October is also the deadline if you file your tax return in paper format. HMRC insist on all paper returns being filed by 31 October each year. It seems that each tax year, HMRC try to persuade more tax payers to file online – they really don’t like the paper versions. Here at KBA we complete all tax returns using the online filing facility – it really is very easy for us to obtain authority on your behalf, we use our own log ins but always send out the finished return for your approval prior to submission.

returns and will always check turnover each year to ensure that the VAT threshold is not looming, we can advise on payroll, we can help with tax codes both for the tax payer or their employees, and we help with rentals, making sure that all allowable costs are included. Of course the changes in finance costs that will be allowable for tax have been publicised already but no final rulings have been provided. There is great discussion at present about how this is going to affect property owners – we at KBA pride ourselves on keeping up to date with all current legislation so you can be sure that when any decisions are made, we will pass these decisions straight on to you as our clients. Other popular services that we offer are CIS returns and submissions plus lots of limited company services including preparation of limited company

accounts, annual returns, hosting registered offices, right down to incorporating companies and adding directors and shareholders. Life is never dull at KBA and we hope that if you have any queries or think that we could help you that you will give us a call, an email or pop in and arrange a free consultation – that way you can make informed decisions and hopefully we can save you some money at the same time. We love the work that we do here at KBA and we hope that it shows with the work that we produce and the service that our clients receive. We hope that reading this will spur you on to making some important decisions about the future and that we can be part of them.

We also send an explanatory calculation with the return to confirm any amounts that must be paid and the dates this is due. We also can help with any queries you have and we can call the tax office on your behalf and discuss any queries. This has to be good news since we know that many of our clients have tried on numerous occasions to call HMRC in the past, holding for hours at a time, only to be cut off. As agents, we at KBA have a priority number that we can call to speak to advisors about your affairs and put things straight once and for all. All in all we really hope that we can make life so much easier and you will wonder what you ever did without us! Of course we are not just about self assessment; we have many other services that we offer to our clients. We can assist with VAT

AB Locksmiths Is your property secure? Burglaries are still very common around Norfolk, generally not carried out by the criminal mastermind. They are normally carried out by opportunists looking for easy targets to make a quick bit of cash, but they don’t care about your valuables or breaking into your home leaving you feeling like you can’t live in your own home. How sad the times have become. A few simple steps can help reduce the amount of crime that is happening in our home towns. If you are going out to work for a day, maybe even two, or on holiday, check that all your windows and doors are locked securely using key operated locks, preferably insurance rated locks that will conform to your insurance policy. Keeping keys out of site, so if they do happen to break in then

they cant just walk out freely. Telling your neighbours that you work most days or evenings is a good way of forming your own neighbourhood watch, so everyone will end up being aware of any suspicious behaviour. Not leaving items on show, be it in your car or on show in your house. Closing curtains and leaving a light on is still a good deterrent, after all, locks and windows are never going to keep them out, but deter them from entering at their own free will. You may only pop out for half an hour but it only takes a matter of minutes to break in. Keeping vigilant at all times, looking for any irregular activities from people walking past doors 2-3 times, odd markings outside houses or on pavements or even a vehicle nearby can be worth making a note of “just in case”. If you live in a remote location

and know that there are houses near by, CCTV can be a well worth investment, sending images upon activation through to your smart phone.

in your own home and keep what is valuable to you, valuable, and not in the hands of a criminal.

Installing British standard locks can often be a good way of slowing the criminals down, look for the British kite mark symbol to see if you have them fitted. A B Locksmiths offer a free security survey to help identify any risks that may be there and free advice to help you feel safer

ATTLEBOROUGH Almary Green Workplace Pensions: peak time for small businesses In measures introduced for the current tax year, no tax is due on savings interest for low earners. Next year sees a more radical change planned affecting many more savers: Alison Rudd explains.

over this threshold. To benefit from the tax-free savings interest status, you need to register with the banks or building societies concerned: your bank or building society will advise on how to go about this.

The tax treatment of interest on savings is being changed to encourage us to save more.

In a further move that will benefit the vast majority of savers, the Chancellor has announced plans for a new Personal Savings Allowance which will be introduced in April 2016. Under the new rules, the first £1,000 of interest from your savings per year will be tax free, provided you are a basic rate taxpayer – or a non-taxpayer.

In the current tax year (2015/16) there will be no tax to be paid on savings interest if your total taxable income (including interest on savings) is less than £15,600. In addition, you may get some of your savings interest tax free if your non-savings income alone is less than £15,600, even if your savings income tips you

If you are a higher rate taxpayer, the allowance drops to £500. The higher rate threshold is currently £42,385 for the

2015/16 tax year and is set to increase to £42,700 in April 2016. If you are an additional rate taxpayer earning over £150,000, which is the threshold for both the current 2015/16 tax year and for next year, then you won’t get a tax-free savings allowance. From 6 April 2016, the intention is that your bank or building society will stop automatically taking 20% off the interest on your savings. The new savings allowance won’t have to take into account any interest you get on your ISA savings as these are already free of tax. In addition, it will be completely separate to your personal allowance for other nonsavings income.

rise in the future, the tax-efficient returns in ISAs will become more valuable again. For example, if interest rates rise to, say, 3%, a basic rate taxpayer with cash investments of £33,300 outside the ISA framework will start to pay tax on some of the interest that they receive. The value of an investment and the income from it could go down as well as up. The return at the end of the investment period is not guaranteed and you may get back less than you originally invested. The tax treatment of investments depends on individual circumstances and is subject to change.

The Government is expecting that this measure will mean that tax on savings will disappear for around 95% of savers.

To discuss any aspect of your financial well-being, contact Alison at alison.rudd@ almarygreen.com or call 01603 706740.

For the remaining 5%, there will need to be a mechanism that allows them to report the taxable interest earned, but details have yet to be confirmed about how this will work.

Alison can be found at the offices of M+A Partners, Cyprus Close, Attleborough most Wednesday and is happy to arrange appointments there or in clients’ own homes.

The new allowance gives savers the option to save in a tax-efficient manner outside the ISA framework, but it’s important to make sure that you still shop around for the best rates. Historically the ISA market has been strongly competitive, even without their tax advantages. There are still other good reasons to use an ISA: it is possible to leave ISAs complete with their tax protection to your spouse if you die, for example, and those who have substantial sums to invest (particularly higher rate taxpayers) can use both the ISA allowance and the new personal savings allowance in tandem. It’s also worth bearing in mind that if and when interest rates 16 | October 2015

BUSINESS PARK The Rookery Business Park Welcome to the first Rookery Business Park feature! Take time to read through the expansive services and products the businesses on the park can offer you; you may be surprised what we do! We are situated along Silver Street in the picturesque setting of Besthorpe between both Wymondham and Attleborough. The business park is situated within minutes from the A11 south and north bound which makes it easy to access from any direction. History Initially, Rookery farm was purchased by the late Mr Jack

Frost in 1983 to expand the size of the arable farm. The images on pages 30 & 31 show how far we have come in just over 32 years. The only building which have lasted relatively unchanged is the Farm house.

of the former Turkey sheds into industrial units was completed in 2006.

Ever since then we have been expanding our services, initially into rearing and processing Turkeys and then onto the largest project we have ever encountered: the transformation into Rookery Business Park.

Since then, Wolf Brewery has moved to other premises and in its place a plethora of businesses have joined us. Some of the marvellous transformations can be shown by the conversion of the straw barn at the rear of the site into what is now the Norfolk Academy of Gymnasts, opened by medal-winning Olympian Beth Tweddle in 2008.

From the arrival of Wolf Brewery, Rookery Farm took the form of a business park. The conversion

Our Record-Breaking Business Park The park boasts one of the largest solar schemes in the south of England with a 370 kw output per hour, per year. All this means that tenants receive cheaper electricity and the surplus is directed into the national grid in order to power your daily lives.

We started as a family-run business and, even with the expansion of Rookery Farm, we have kept that family ethos going.

Off the back of the “solar success” we are about to embark on a further 5 megawatt solar park (with the company Solar Centry) constructed on our land, covering approximately 25 acres, away from the sight of residents and tenants.

What started off as an arable farm has been thrown into the 21st century, into the industrial and information age. Our aim is to continue welcoming change and innovation and making sure that we give the surrounding towns a fine resource.

Do you want to rent a unit or self-storage? Rookery Business Park has recently opened a self storage facility for those people who need a secure place for short or long term storage. It is the newest addition to the range of services we can offer.

Home Start Support and friendship for families What is Home-Start? Home-Start is a national charity with schemes in hundreds of local communities. We recruit and train volunteers to help families with young children. Our volunteers, who know about being a parent, support other parents by visiting them in their own homes for a couple of hours each week. We also run special family groups and hold social events for families.

As a volunteer what would I actually do? Usually you visit a family in their own home once a week for a couple of hours. How you help is really down to the family itself. Some might need someone to talk to... others may need more practical support with meal planning and cooking, reading to the children, going to the local park, or finding out about local services.

What kind of families would I be helping? All kinds of families can find it hard to cope for all sorts of reasons, maybe because of the illness or disability of a child or because of post-natal illness, bereavement or loneliness. At Home-Start we support any parent with at least one child under five who asks for our help. Our supported families, like our volunteers, come from all walks of life.

What would I get out of volunteering for Home-Start? Knowing you have helped; a boost to your self-esteem and confidence; even a foot on the ladder towards a job. How can I find out more about becoming a Home-Start volunteer? Contact your local Home-Start for an informal chat www.homestartbsn.co.uk T: 01953 459892

ELDERLY The Hearing Care Centre When was the last time you had a hearing test? Can you remember when you last had your hearing tested? If you can’t remember or have never had one, you certainly are not alone. A recent study* highlighted that in the United Kingdom over half the population (53%) have never had a hearing test carried out. If you asked yourself when was your last dental check-up or visit to the opticians, you would probably say in the last 2 years. So why do we not take the same care with our hearing? There are currently 10 million people in the UK who are hard of hearing and our lifestyle means that the condition is becoming increasingly prevalent. Once an issue associated with old age, now anyone can find

their hearing isn’t what it used to be. Thankfully, with the use of accurate diagnostics and fantastic hearing assistive technology - it’s often an easily solved problem. A large part of the problem is that many of us presume, wrongly, that it isn’t something that could affect us. In fact, it’s thought that 18,000 of us are experiencing noiseinduced hearing loss caused by or exacerbated by our workplace environment or hobbies. If you suspect you or a friend is experiencing difficulties with their hearing consider the list below: • Do you ask others to repeat themselves?

• Do friends complain that the TV is too loud?

becomes easier and less stressful and they begin to enjoy life again.

• Does it become difficult to follow a conversation in background noise?

Our hearing allows us to connect with our surroundings and communicate with our loved ones. The ability to hear properly can go along way in helping to stay active. Correct communication with family and friends can mean the difference between a fun and enjoyable day out or a confusing and frustrating day.

• Does it seem to you as if people are mumbling? If you answered YES to any of these questions, you may have a hearing loss. If you have yet to have a hearing assessment, do not suffer in silence with an issue that can be readily addressed with hearing aids. If you are feeling hesitant about taking the next step remember that you are not alone. Consider the improvements in quality of life experienced by individuals who take action and address their hearing loss. The experience can be life changing - hearing aid users say they grow in confidence, communicating in groups

ELDERLY Kingsley Healthcare Care Homes A pioneering WINGS Program to change the face of care and dementia Inspiring Research According to The Alzheimer’s Society there will be 850,000 in 2015 in the UK which is set to rise to 1 million in 2025. There are 40,000 younger people with dementia in the UK with two thirds of people with dementia being women. It is now more than ever, that the focus to find a cure for the disease is becoming the number one priority. Dementia has now officially overtaken cancer as the UK’s biggest killer. Scientists have had some break trough’s and have many theories for the cause of Alzheimer’s and dementia but there are still not enough case studies that provide enough solid evidence to be a cure for the disability.

36 | October 2015

Dementia Care A person diagnosed with dementia may find themselves feeling vulnerable and confused. This is very common and absolutely natural to feel all types of emotion in order to come to terms with the disability. Although there is no cure at the moment for dementia there are however ways to slow the process down and allow for that person to live a very fulfilling life for many years after diagnosis. It’s important to see dementia as a disability that people have to adapt their lifestyles around rather than an illness. It is not necessarily the dementia that kills but the other health complications that increasingly arise over the years

with dementia. There are now many ways to help enable people with dementia by educating the community and people on dementia care. Already there are now dementia cafes, easy to use equipment and training, clubs and classes to attend to help stimulate positive feelings and emotions. The WINGS Program Kingsley Healthcare has teamed up with Stirling University in the aim to work together in creating a WINGS program which will set a president for those who care for others and provide the quality standards for carers in all of their homes. WINGS stands for Welcoming, Individual, Nurturing, Guidance and Sensitivity. This program is being put together by Kingsley Healthcare to help carers have a better understanding and support in providing the high standards needed for the resident to have the best experience possible

during their care. This program will be implemented in all Kingsley Healthcare homes. Kingsley Healthcare Kingsley Healthcare is a private care home provider across the UK with the mission to provide the best care by changing the face of the industry with a pioneering WINGS Program. The company was established in 1999 by Daya Thayan and his wife Sumi who purchased their first home in Suffolk and turned the home around to the thriving home it is today. Over the years, the company has grown to 24 homes, including four Learning Disability homes and is now a nationally recognised award winning care home provider with plans of expansion within the next 5 years. ELDERLY Able Community Care The Alternative to Moving into a Care Home Getting older sometimes means that a person needs to be cared for twenty four hours a day. Such care can be provided in a care home or in a person’s own home. Given the choice, many people would prefer to stay in their own home and Able Community Care has enabled thousands of people to exercise this choice. Our experience has shown that having a regular rota of experienced carers in your own home is often a much happier alternative than moving into a care home. Able Community Care has been providing an alternative choice to moving into a care home since 1980 by providing Live-in Carer Schemes throughout the UK. Our live-in care staff have enabled thousands of disabled and older

people to remain happily within their own home. The role of our live-in carers is to provide domestic, personal and social care tailored to each individual’s needs and wishes. One of our clients is Kate. Kate was born in 1919 and in 2006 as a result of arthritis and too common falls, Kate and her family had to make a decision as to how Kate wished to be cared for. Her own wish was to remain living in her own bungalow, to keep up her social activities and to maintain her hobbies. Kate and her family decided to try a Live-in Carer Scheme and since 2006 a continuous, regular, rotational system of liked live-in care workers have supported Kate, now aged 95, and who

• “The live-in care workers carry out the tasks that are important to me.”

• A “Home From Hospital” care package offering convalescent live-in care at home.

• “I feel comfortable about contacting my Care Manager” (whom she has met).

Able Community Care currently provides Live-in, Carer Schemes in over 50 counties and our clients range in age from early twenties to over one hundred years of age.

continues to live happily in her own home.

• “I am happy with the service I am receiving.” • “The responsiveness to ‘out of hours’ contact is satisfying and responsive.” Live-in Carers are special people. Whilst living for weekly or fortnightly periods in a client’s home they provide domestic support, personal care and offer companionship. Each of our clients has an individual ‘job description’ and it is the objective of our Care Managers to provide our clients with a regular rota of liked live-in carer workers and also to find for our care workers, clients for whom they have the skills to care for. One of our live-in care workers is Lorna who has been with us since 2011. Before joining Able Community Care, Lorna was a care worker for her County Council where she gained experience and care certification including attaining NVQ Level 3 in Social Care. Lorna is one of Kate’s two regular live-in carers and is a driver and non-smoker. In addition to providing professionally managed live-in care at home on a long term basis, Able Community Care can also provide the following care packages: • Respite care for family carers who need a well-earned break. • A Carer to accompany a person who wants to go on holiday or to

Some of our clients have been with us since the 1990’s and their care packages have been continuous. As a result we have a reputation for reliability.
