Introduction

Timing is everything … Complex adaptive systems, chaos theory, self-organization and quantum reality … do those terms sound familiar? Scientists are using them to define our reality these days and so are business leaders and politicians. That‘s because the industrial-age, mechanistic mindset that defined our jobs and our lives for the last 100 years—a system that analyzed only parts and not the whole—is suddenly obsolete.

The World Wide Web is just one example of our interconnected reality. You don‘t hear words like predictability or stability anymore. They have been replaced with flexibility, adaptability and responsiveness. Today, to thrive in unpredictable times we must be fully informed in our personal lives, organizations and activities. We must be fully engaged. We must see the big picture.

On the following pages you will be introduced to a spherical system, including an online tool, that is helping people and organizations to see the big picture, quickly and cost effectively. It is a system that promotes quantum leaps in awareness, productivity and efficiency.

This spherical system is unique. It is a ―reflective‖ approach that shows the shape or condition of any complex adaptive system. It is the only system designed to specifically provide individuals and organizations with the ability to conceptualize, visualize, comprehend and interact with self-organizing, interconnected, complex environments.

“For many of us, mechanical thinking has been hardwired into our DNA … For people in government, the tools at their disposal were all created generations ago and tweaked around the edges to give the appearance of being modernized. As we have moved to global business operations, we have not grown the regulatory systems to match … I like the way you use the sphere to help expand people’s thinking. Most are so immersed in their little world that they continually miss the big picture of what’s happening around them. You may indeed have the perfect tool for reinventing our systems.” —Dr. Thomas Frey, The DaVinci Institute

The spherical approach … shows the “whole” of people, activities and organizations. The spherical approach shows the shape or condition of any complex adaptive system. It shows the interconnected elements. Spherit Inc is a SaaS company founded by Phil Lawson that promotes the Sphere Reflectment System. The spherical concepts and visualization model are identified in the book: “Being Spherical—Reshaping Our Lives and Our World for the 21st Century.” Using mythological imagery in the form of a sphere and an innovative and adaptive vocabulary, the book introduces readers to concepts and processes for reshaping their lives, organizations and world for the better. The patented sphere-chart is a practical hands-on 2D awareness application.

In technical terms, the Spherit system is a: standardized, universally applicable, customizable … … approach to conceptualizing, visualizing, understanding and interacting with …

(U.S. Patent No. 7,408,554 )

… any complex adaptive system: individuals, families, relationships, organizations, communities and activities.

The Spherit system identifies the critical elements that constitute the whole (sphere) of people, activities and organizations and then This system: visualizes them for • saves time/money decision-making • improves outcomes planning and actions

• increases efficiency • provides clarity • makes the complex comprehensible

Sphere-Charts are simple not simplistic Just as E=Mc2 simplified the concept of Special Relativity … A sphere-chart can simplify any complex adaptive system—a life, organization or group of activities.

For the last five years

Lawson conceptualized and designed a patent for a visualization model (filed in 2003); co-authored an in-depth book about the topic (―Being Spherical‖ published in 2004); designed the technology for the visualization tool and then, in 2005, developed and implemented the online version.

Inspired by the words of Albert Einstein, who once admonished us to “see the world anew,” Phil Lawson stepped out of the corporate world in 1999 to research and write about the interconnected nature of our world.

(2003-2008) Lawson has spent thousands of hours doing thousands of sphere-charts to validate the process. This included conducting many training sessions with advisors, counselors, and clients and giving numerous public presentations, seminars and webinars.

Research and validation projects

Working with a nonprofit organization called AHEC, Phil Lawson had the opportunity to introduce sphere-charts to nursing facilities, colleges and emergency response organizations. And he also introduced sphere-charts to schools and other organizations for data research. Many of the projects involved continued research following the progress of students who used the charts. The Colorado Trust Foundation was a funding source for some of the research projects.

Clients

Clients who have used sphere-charts have included the Colorado Department of Labor to a Milwaukee Radio station funded by the NoVo Foundation, to a television production company; construction and resort companies; colleges, hospitals and also a nationally recognized marriage communication company. (In the past, more than 700,000 couples have been through this company‘s relationship programs. They are now implementing sphere-charts for a whole new product line.)

No one thought the questions were too personal, not too invasive; but ―appropriate if you want to better the relationship.‖ I am on Military One Insurance Plan — EAP for military so I get several military couples a month. returned from Iraq) have had difficulty connecting intimately ... she's had to be independent for the last 18 months and he is very guarded due to his recent tour. As we went around the sphere they were “relieved to finally have a place to start reconnecting.” This couple did not express sexual frustrations to each other, but the THRIVE showed they were similar in their discontentment — this brought both of them to tears — good tears! “It is a relief [to know] that he is where I am” she told us … They are very reflective of people who have been apart, not by their choice, but by life circumstances.

Jean (last name withheld) Certified marriage counselor who is using the THRIVE sphere. On this page are her comments regarding several clients.

One military wife said that after her husband took THRIVE (the marriage sphere) it helped her to see his ―vulnerable side" — her words and he affirmed. He said it really helped him put his thoughts in a "sensible, useable" format. He was elated by the Sphere and I have seen changes in his self perception as well as how he looks at the marriage "where I can be more involved and areas that I need to work on me so I can be more vested in the relationship."

Julie/Kevin said that it helps me

What has been amazing is that nobody so far has been angry, THRIVE stirs a more empathetic response. It is very different from a therapist saying you are spiteful with each other and they roll their eyes and the tension builds. With the sphere it is right there in a non emotional structured manner to talk about it, no one gets upset. It is a more understanding and conversational mode.

better understand the conflicts we have, "I have discovered things he/she never talked about before"… "surprises that are good and surprises that are sad, but areas we can improve, now that there are no more secrets — non-intentional secrets."

Two military couples whose husbands have recently returned from Iraq found the tool to be an excellent way of assessing where they are individually emotionally and where the emotional marriage stands at this point — both couples thought the THRIVE provided them a paper pencil emotional reflection!

so powerful for me, Phil. For now, I can tell you that, afterwards, I kept (naturally, not on purpose) seeing the nodes on my chart that showed the great disparity between my abilities and positive, determined attitude, yet nearly imperceptible income and agony over my singleness. And I kept thinking about what you said about this — about all that those huge gaps imply. So, in my mind, I started to regularly and consciously envision the gaps getting smaller, and I had an interesting experience with that. It took a great deal of work to do this. It was as if my brain was an industrial strength rubber band trying to force me to NOT change the way I think about these areas in my life. I think I was actually seeing my subconscious mind, if that makes sense. But I kept at it. I've always thought I had a very strong mind and knew myself extremely well, but after our session, I became aware of subtle, self-defeating thinking patterns I had not noticed before.

—Micki

What wonders await us when we embrace our fears. How I look forward to all that is yet to unfold.

allows us to see if the person is self-aware. If they are selfaware, we can see it in the patterns in their responses. If they are not self-aware, their shape shows this too. We have seen this be true with high school students and seniors. It‘s not about an IQ or some external rating or outside validation, the spherechart is validated by the user themselves, validation is through the person when they say it is correct. — Kris

Pilot project: Colorado Department of Labor Booker Graves Executive Director Colorado Workforce Development Council

This sphere-chart system was designed for health care employment positions:

Elise Lowe-Vaughn Director of Workforce Programs Operations CDLE

Situation

Results, so far:

• By 2010 Colorado will need twice as many nurses as it had in 2005. • Waiting lists of upwards of two years for nursing school • Drop out rates in school were running from 20% to 50% • Retention is a major problem 30% quit in first year • Only criteria for getting into a program was a stated desire and minimum requirements for academic grades.

This program was part of a

Action In a collaborative approach to the situation an expert panel was convened. They were made up of private employers, health care educators and workforce experts. In a series of meetings they identified 48 aspects of a person's life that can impact their success in health care education and employment. A spherical reflectment was designed and implemented.

two-year project to identify potential barriers at the onset of schooling that would interrupt or terminate a student‘s educational program. More than 1,000 people participated in the initial pilot. During the pilot a two year study was conducted where the sphere, used with new students, identified 70% of those who ultimately dropped out or failed. Since then, the company who initiated this project (AHEC) has continued to use sphere-charts at other colleges in it‘s program and summer health camps for teens. In addition, this project led to four clients/projects: 1.) the development of a readiness sphere for a community college; 2.) a special life sciences sphere and general readiness sphere for a workforce center; 3. & 4.) and a large assisted living corporation who has used the healthcare sphere to prescreen nursing candidates and an employment sphere for van drivers.

Pilot Project: AD Works Workforce Center Kris Wenzel Executive Director Central Colorado AHEC Dawn Garcia Director AD Works

Application: Upon seeing the Department of Labor healthcare employment sphere this organization had a sphere designed to prescreen life sciences students and it designed a general readiness sphere with unique criteria that identified candidates for a workforce investment act (WIA) program.

Special feature: This sphere-chart was designed with a custom sector allowing counselors to fill in responses or test scores from academic and skills tests. This custom feature served as a reality check to compare a job candidates‟ self-reflectment with actual aptitudes and abilities. This special section also allowed input of results from a True Colors personality profiling program this organization was implementing.

This customized sector of the sphere-chart allowed advisors to compare academic skills, aptitudes and also personality traits to a candidates selfreflectment.

Columbine Health Systems Yvonne Meyers Health Systems Coordinator

Applications: The health systems coordinator at Columbine was a member of the expert panel who worked on the development of the Colorado Department of Labor health care sphere. After seeing the results of the health care sphere she licensed it for use at Columbine—a complex with several thousand residents. In addition, she later commissioned a sphere-chart to screen van drivers who transport seniors to and from the center.

Van driver discovery: During the development of this sphere reflectment it became evident that the criteria they had been using to hire van drivers did not draw people with the necessary skills for this role. They had been focused on a typical “truck/van driver” profile; when what they needed was more closely related to a multi-tasking “soccer mom.”

Red Rocks Community College Joan Smith Dean Instruction and Institutional Strategic Planning

Application: The national average community college graduation rate is 21.7%. Community college students are older than the average university student, are usually a first-generation college student who faces multiple challenges in the way of financial, academic, personal and work-related issues. Many are academically under-prepared, students who are low-income, students of color and may work more than 30 hours a week. Yet in spite of these known risk factors community colleges have no system that makes the student aware of how these issues can come together impacting their education goals. Additionally there is no way for student advisors to quickly identify a student's strengths and any potential barrier so as to provide direction and assistance. Red Rocks Community College of Denver used spherecharts to help them address these issues. Working with a team of advisors and deans a student readiness evaluation was developed. The student takes the self-reflectment online in about 12 minutes and can see the resulting sphere-chart instantly. The Student Readiness Sphere asks the student a series of 53 questions which they answer using a 1-9 scale or yes/no about their academics, skills, socio/economics, experience and disposition. The resulting sphere-chart is like an electronic mirror that reflects how the student sees their life at that time. The sphere-chart does not make judgments about a student. It is an awareness tool that aids the student to better understand how their life situation can impact their education. The student sphere-chart becomes a visual map that the student and school advisors can use to plot out a course of action to achieve their education goals. The student readiness sphere has an additional feature that allows a student advisor to input ACCUPLACER scores. This feature allows the student and advisor to see how the student self-assessed their academics and compare that to the qualified test scores.

Association of Financial Counselors Planners and Educators Sharon Burns Executive Director AFCPE

Situation: In late 2007, as concerns over the national mortgage crisis continued to grow, Phil Lawson was contracted to give a keynote address at an AFCPE conference in Florida.

Project: His role for this client was two-fold: 1.) introduce the spherical approach to more than 400 members/attendees at the keynote and how it might aid people/counselors/families to navigate their way through a chaotic economic environment. 2.) demonstrate the chart. To that end, a special household financial sphere reflectment was developed beforehand, with the input of AFCPE organizers, to be discussed during the keynote presentation. Prior to the presentation/demonstration, AFCPE members completed a survey that confirmed that all of the issues/questions developed on the chart would be valuable in counseling sessions with families. But they also confirmed that there is no standardized manner to collect this data in a timely manner. Therefore, there was very strong interest by attendees in the sphere-chart process. Some later indicated that they were astounded by the level of information that could be discerned in just moments about a family‟s finances. The AFCPE is currently considering ways it can adopt this spherical process for certification by its members.

New product: The Thrive sphere-chart was designed to aid counselors and couples to visually see both their personal views and that of their partners on some 67 aspects of their life that impacts success in a marriage/relationship. In moments, the shape or condition of the relationship can be seen revealing obvious areas of harmonics, discordance and matches and gaps in views. Couples individually spend only about 10 minutes to complete the online marriage reflectment but the resulting sphere-chart can markedly reduce the number of counseling sessions. It can also improve outcomes by revealing unrecognized or previously unrecognizable issues.

Welcome to a survey experience that allows your voice to be heard. It’s simple: answer the following questions on a scale of 1 to 9. Your responses appear in the shape of a sphere to illustrate how the issues are interconnected. (when finished click View Spheres above) Your responses remain confidential to the research company.

May we contact you? WYMS is looking for people to interview about their views on Milwaukee. If you are be interested in being interviewed please click here.

Communitywide sphere reflectment: This project was one of the initial activities of a local nonprofit organization to aid in a “revitalization” of the economically depressed city of Milwaukee. The objective was to use a local public radio station to initiate dialogue with citizens/listeners and create a shared sense of community. One of the first activities was to ascertain how residents viewed the condition of local government; the economics of the city; social conditions, issues of race, education, law enforcement, and quality of life. The media/research company who headed the spherical reflectment was highly pleased with the number of participants which reached 940. A most fascinating finding during this research was the extraordinary level of agreement among citizen/participants regardless of age, race, income, gender, education and people of faith versus those who claimed no faith. (Note two examples of trending on this page.) This project proved to be the basis for a community initiative called Unified Milwaukee.

Research project for a book Most often, the stereotype of hard-driving successful executives is that of a type “A” personality—one that works day and night to the detriment of their family life, their health and mental and emotional well-being. If these executives could „do it over again,‟ would they? This client, by means of a specially designed spherechart, is exploring the connections in the lives of executives—connections between their companies, management styles and personal lives in relation to success. In addition to viewing individual sphere-charts of the executives, trends will be examined by comparing various subgroups based on age, race, gender, income, management style, years in business, etc.

A television and construction company

These two projects utilized specially designed sphere-chart reflectment to provide Phase State snapshots of these companies showing the perceptions of all senior/key staff about the shape or condition of their organizations. Both these companies produced roughly $100 million a year in revenues. (Names have been withheld for privacy.)

For one of these companies, the sphere-chart revealed significant confusion among senior staff about the companies‘ strategy. It revealed a breakdown in communications, along with perceptions involving a lack of recognition and lack of support for their jobs. This company was experiencing radical change within its industry and this reflectment revealed systemic problems that were impacting its ability to respond to the changing conditions. Regarding the second company, the sphere-chart involving senior staff showed a high degree of harmonics in views in virtually all areas of the company—its actions, activities, and perceptions of client/customer relations. However, it also revealed issues within one department that were discovered to be a cause of customer dissatisfaction, and were surprising to the CEO. This allowed for corrective action to be taken.

In conclusion

Timing is everything …

It‟s safe to say we can‘t go home again. Well, Thomas Wolf said those words first. But, from our human perspective, life and time move in only one direction. We can‘t go home again. We can‘t unscramble an egg. And we can‘t go back to The Box—to an outdated mindset; to a compartmentalized worldview.

It‟s time to see The Sphere.
