Compared to the basic MiG-29, the upgraded version has higher fuel capacity and consequently longer range and has in-flight refueling capability. The MiG-29SMT has a number of new capabilities to effectively destroy both air and ground targets with the use of highprecision “air-to-air” and “air-to-surface” missiles, thus combining the roles of air superiority fighter and strike fighter. The aircraft and engine service life have been increased and maintenance costs reduced. The upgraded aircraft are likely to serve till 2025.
