INTRODUCTION Dear Breeders, Partners and Brown Swiss Enthusiasts around the world, we are delighted to present you our new catalogue of the SPERMEX German Brown Swiss sires which includes an enhanced lineup from German Brown Swiss sires. The data are based on the latest Interbull sire proof estimation dated April 2017. GERMAN BROWN SWISS = RELIABILITY

Anyhow we will also continue to listen to the demands of our customers and will contribute to supply the dairy farmers around the world with a balanced mixture of genetics. Doesn’t matter if you put more emphasis on the latest generation of genetics with young genomic sires, progeny tested bulls or sires with second crop results you should always rely on the figures to produce the profitable and uncomplicated type of cow which fits everywhere!

HIDALGO - da ughter Feuer

Since the introduction of the genomic breeding values for Brown Swiss in Germany we have had the opportunity to collect a lot of experience with this important tool in cattle breeding. Honestly we can state that the results are quite encouraging and those bulls who have received progeny information have confirmed their general tendencies from the genomics very well. Present top progeny tested bulls such as Harley, Vanpari and Vassli are best examples, but even more important is that a large range of bulls fit their expectations.

Moreover we in Germany will continue to make a second type scoring for the offspring of the most important sires in the third lactation to get even more information which bulls sire the longlasting and therefore most profitable cows. The well balanced conformation and strong feet & legs are the basis for the excellent durability of the Brown Swiss cow. In the past 10 years the average lifetime production of the German Brown Swiss cows have steadily increased. Statistic evaluations from Bavaria indicate that Brown Swiss have a remarkable higher lifetime production in comparison to all other dairy breeds in the same area. In combination with a high share of roughage intake Brown Swiss can refer to the lowest production cost per kg milk in the statistics. The flat lactation curve avoids extreme production peaks in which the energy intake can’t cover the demand. This is the reason for a stable metabolism of the Brown Swiss cows which finally leads to the big plus of the German Brown Swiss: GERMAN BROWN SWISS = LONGEVITY In Germany Brown Swiss cows almost complete one lactation more than the average of all dairy cows and no other breed has such a high average lifetime production and such a high rate of 100.000 l cows. Average age at leaving (Germany, ADR 2016): All dairy cows: 5.4 years Brown Swiss: 6.3 years

The Eco-index-list pays special attention to this ability of the Brown Swiss to sire easy handling, longlasting cows: Major constitution traits such as persistency, performance increase in further lactations, fertility, calving ease and longevity have a higher emphasis in the Eco index.

Part of the reasons for their excellent adaption qualities is that on the one hand they have to cope in this region with a wide range of climates. On the other hand the young cattle have to walk long distances in this region which is characterized by difficult surfaces of the landscape. Due to the rearing system in the mountain area, Brown Swiss start with moderate performances after the first calving, but keep the yield very well over the whole lactation. 4

GERMAN BROWN SWISS = ADAPTATION The Brown Swiss breed descends from cattle used in the valleys and mountain slopes in the Alps. It was here that the transmitting ability of certain breed characteristics became so firmly established that they mark it to this day.


The Brown Swiss cow has the ability to increase the milk performance in the following lactations, which keeps the cow healthy and tough. These high adaption qualities of German Brown Swiss are well confirmed and appreciated under various natural and economic conditions all over the world! Performance data 2016: cows under milkrecording: 161,075 7,531 kg milk 4.26% fat 321 kg fat 3.60% protein 271 kg protein cows registered in herdbook: 137,520 7,695kg milk 4.26% fat 328 kg fat 3.60% protein 277 kg protein Looking at the absolute figures you have to consider that about 80% of the German Brown Swiss cows are kept under semi-intensive conditions in the lower and upper mountain areas of the Alps! GERMAN BROWN SWISS = Ideal choice for CROSSBREEDING The sum of the positive characteristics has lead to a steadily rising number of farms using German Brown Swiss sires in crossbreeding with other dairy breeds. The F1-generation shows an extraordinary vitality, levels up the protein content in the milk and gives easy handling cows. In the second crossbred generation the type comes closer to the purebred Brown Swiss type. In the table of contents on page 4 we have listed some recommendations which bulls should suit best for the different crossbred systems and generations in combination with Holsteins, red breeds and Jersey.

Effective BREEDING PROGRAM & data from high quality - Germany’s breeding program is the largest in the world for Brown Swiss Almost 161,000 Brown Swiss cows are under milk recording in Germany asure a reliable data base, as well as the completly independent type evalution. Due to the independance there is no influence from economic interests of breeding companies. The A.I. studs Greifenberg, Memmingen and Herbertingen test about 1,450 Brown Swiss bulls annually genomical and just 5,6% are finally selected for the AI industry. Several young sires are co-tested in other countries to get comparable results in different environments. The bull dams are selected very carefully. Young heifers of the next generation who promise an advanced genetic progress are selected as well as older cows which have definitely proven their qualities over the years. Best genetics from all over the world are used under the special emphasis to keep the balance of performance, type and fitness - (components of the Total Merit Index / p.46) VARIATION of BLOODLINES plays another important role in the German breeding philosophy. By the use of various alternative bloodlines and mating programs it was possible to keep the inbreeding coefficient of the German Brown Swiss population on a moderate level in the past decade in spite of the strong progress which was achieved at the same time. Rare pedigrees are always an essential part of the breeding program. The 67 bulls presented in the catalogue have 46 different sires. VASSLI did confirm very well with his daughters in Germany throughout the past year. Now he is as well the new leader of the German Brown Swiss toplist progeny tested. Vassli was selected as a co-sampling bull for Australia quite early and his first “Ozzie” daughters seem to reflect exactly the same breeding pattern as the 1078 German half-sisters, thus he stands out as the leader of the Australian top list and is followed in the Australian ranking by his half-brother the legendary Payssli. Both descend of the recognized Even-Bounce cow family. Like not many other bulls around the world Vassli is capable to improve milk yield and udder quality at the same time on such extremely high level. Meanwhile first daughters have finished their third lactation. Vassli-daughters show a strong will for milking and a lot of dairy character. The progeny group which was presented at the “National Young Breeders Show” in Buchloe in November 2015 demonstrated all the benefits of the bull: Tall cows with a fine bone quality and perfectly uniform in their type. The Vassli- daughters showed a very good locomotion in the show ring, strong pasterns and high foot angle. The rumps are extremely long in the side view but show a clear tendency for plane rumps which should be considered carefully for the mating. Also the weaker backline should be taken into consideration. A real highlight was the udder quality of the Vassli-daughters in Buchloe so that the impression confirmed very well the linear description. All daughters had a very well textured, high and strong attached udder. Fore udder length and attachment as well as rear udder width and height were amazing. The teats were formed well and ideal in the rear teat placement and orientation. Nevertheless the tendency to fine teats should be considered in mating. It is quite impressive to compare Vassli’s genomic figures over the past years with the progeny proof now: In all major traits Vassli confirmed or even outperformed his genomic index in spite of the subsequent base adjustments in the system. Vassli is used as sire of sons in several Brown Swiss populations around the world.

VERDI was already quite popular as young genomic sire because of his high TMI and the strong protein index. Verdi (Versace x Pronto x Hussli x Dotson x Zelad) derives out of a very consistent cow family with long lasting and high performing cows. His dam Idro is still alive with 10 calvings in 10,5 years and meanwhile she has a lifetime performance of more than 101.000 l milk. And the strong genetic transmission seems to continue in the next generation. Verdi’s daughter Uschi has a Jucator-son under contract of the A.I. center Memmingen. Actually there are 66 daughters included in the proof of Verdi. Quite a lot of daughters are following now and his high index for persistency is very promising for Verdi’s further development. A strong will for milking is combined with high components, where especially the protein percentage stands out. The first 29 scored daughters confirm the genomic values for his type. Frame, rumps and udder composite could be slightly improved in comparison to his genomic index from December. Verdi-daughters show a moderate frame with correct rumps and pasterns. The straight rear leg set has to be considered. The udders are well attached but could be longer in the fore udder. Teat length and placement are ideal for milking robot systems. Additionally you profit from good udder health and great milking speed. Verdi daughters are easy handling cows with excellent fitness abilities for all production systems!

Since the release of his first progeny proof HARLEY was permanently able to stay in the top ranking in the German list. During this time he has confirmed his impressive qualities in all major traits and has meanwhile almost 1300 daughters in milk in several countries. Harley derives out of a long-lasting cow family and a consistent pedigree constellation (Huray x President x Brost x Vinos) combining all outstanding benefits of the Brown Swiss breed. Harley-daughters are very high performing cows with an excellent persistency throughout the whole lactation so that the cows are not getting stressed and show no extreme peak in the lactation curve. Harley daughters have a good metabolism and a healthy development of the cows during the lactation. The second lactations show another strong increase in the milk yield and protein content in comparison to the first lactations and first third lactation records indicate a further strong development. The balanced Harley-daughters show a medium frame with long, correctly sloped rumps. For the proper mating with Harley you should look for a correct rear leg set and dry hocks. The pasterns are strong enough and the foot angle high so that Harley-daughters are doing well in free stall barns. The fore and rear udder attachments are correct so that the larger udder volume is balanced. The teat placement can be considered as ideal and the longer and thicker teat tendency is something what is very much appreciated by many robot farms nowadays. The linear profile was very well confirmed by the daughter group shown at the “Young Breeders Show” in Buchloe 2015: The group was very uniform and the medium framed daughters showed a lot of substance with decent body depth and good width in the chest. The rumps were long and wide enough and showed the desired slope. Harley is very reliable in his calving ease figures, the Harley calves show a strong vitality and he can be recommended for heifer inseminations as well.

Vasir x Etpat x Siray x Vinos out of the Huray-cow family: With this almost perfect combination in the background it is no wonder that VANPARI has been able to confirm his high genomic proofs with his milking daughters. In the current proof there are 1548 daughters included in the system and the development over the past estimations was very consistent. The pedigree combines a strong will for milking with excellent fitness abilities and correct type and udder traits. This perfect combination is also transmitted by Vanpari himself. His dam Laura impresses with 3,95% protein and his grand dam Laura is none less than the fabulous dam of the German legend Huray. Vanpari sires good milk performances and great components. In the past years we were able to inspect several Vanpari daughters: In general the linear description was reflected very well by the cows we could see. They showed a medium to slightly taller frame with long bodies and good proportions in all parts of the body. In spite of the dairy character the Vanpari-daughters had sufficient strength in the forehand. The rumps were long with the slight tendency for plane rumps and they could have been wider in the rear view. The rear leg set showed a clear tendency for straight legs. The hocks were mostly correct and the pasterns exceptionally strong combined with a correct foot angle. The udder quality was quite unique with a high udder floor and a strong suspensory ligament. The fore udders were long and showed a correct attachment whereas the rear udder attachment could have been wider. The teat placement was correct but mostly the teats were a bit short. All owners of the Vanpari-daughters expressed their satisfaction about the good all-round qualities of the cows. For a son of Vasir we have to point out the outstanding daughter fertility and their healthy udders. - Vanpari is available with sexed semen! -

HIDALGO has confirmed his genomics very well with his first 117 daughter. Hidalgo derives out of a very long-lasting cow family that impresses with both great type and high performances. Hidalgo reflects the benefits of his cow family in perfection. Combining Hussant x Emerog x Pronto x General in his pedigree he can be used on many pedigrees, since Hussant and Emerog did not have too many daughters in the population. Hidalgos dam Ulla is still alive with meanwhile more than 60,000kg milk lifetime performance, grand-dam Usra left herd after 8 calvings and great-granddam General Urml has a lifetime performance of more than 100,000kg milk. Hidalgo daughters are very well performing cows and the excellent persistency throughout the lactation contributes to a stable metabolism and trouble-free cows with best fertility. Hidalgo is currently one of the best sires in the Brown Swiss breed for improving the rumps. The rumps of the Hidalgo daughters are extremely long and wide, slightly sloped and the thurl is perfectly positioned in the center, the best preconditions for his daughters for easy calvings. That is underlined by the great figures for maternal calving ease. The daughters show a lot of frame with a superb body depth and good width in the chest. The linear description of the udder traits look brilliant. Especially the high rear udders, high udder floors and the fore udder attachment stand out. His daughters suit ideally for robotic milking systems. His great daughter fertility, milking speed and the maternal calving ease provide the perfect base for cows that last long in the herd. - Hidalgo is available with sexed semen! -

Just only four sons of the Vinozak-son Vincent were tested. With VINTAGE we have got a very balanced top bull which indicates a very successful rate. VINTAGE derives out of the well-known Jublend-daughter Osaria bred by Michael Epp, Lengenwang. Osaria produced more than 80.000 l milk in 8 lactations with an average of impressive 3,88% protein. Also her dam Olpe finished five lactations with more than 9.400 kg average. The O-cow family is known for a very consistent breeding pattern in the herd. Vintage combines a strong will for milking with good components. Fat & protein-% have increased with each sire-proof run. Also the persistency throughout the lactation is quite positive looking at the present results. Additionally the combination of a good milking speed with low somatic cell counts has to be pointed out. The Vintage-daughters present themselves very uniform with a medium frame and sufficient body capacity in combination with a good dairy character. Rumps are long and wide enough and more sloped. The hocks should be considered for the mating, but strong pasterns and a high foot angle enable the Vintage-daughters to have a good locomotion in free stall barns. The long fore udders are well attached and the teat placement is correct. - Vintage is available with sexed semen! -

HACKER was by far the most popular Huray-son in the past two years. This is no surprise looking at the almost perfect combination of performance, fitness abilities and conformation. Hacker-daughters are medium sized cows with a correct rear leg set, clear bones and strong pasterns. In spite of the high milk yield the udder floor is high enough in the attachment and the teat placement is almost perfect. The rear udder attachment could be wider and the fore udders a bit longer. Since his first release of daughter information in December 2013 Hacker kept all proofs in the major traits on a steady very high level. The high performance is reached over the whole lactation without extreme peaks in the lactation curve and an impeccable udder health with low somatic cell counts. This is probably the reason why Hacker-daughters show an very good fertility. Quite impressive are also the calving ease figures. Both maternal and direct effects are very positive so that Hacker-daughters don’t only calve easily themselves but Hacker himself can be also recommended for heifer inseminations. More than 3.300 calvings from heifers indicate an incredibly low rate of 2,3% veterinary help. Furthermore the calves show a remarkable vitality in the first weeks. The special combination of a strong will for milking and an easy handling type of cow can be traced back to Hacker’s dam Konni. On the maternal side Hacker offers a complete outcross pedigree with Hucos x Simerl x Vitra. In the past A.I. seasons no other German bull was so much demanded for sexed semen and Hacker continues to deliver excellent semen quality. Furthermore Hacker represents an interesting code for aAa enthusiasts (654123). So when you look around for the perfect Brown Swiss allround sire you have just got him. - Hacker is available with sexed semen! -
