MVHS splits matches heading into championship play Ken Gallegos Sports Writer If anyone thought the district race would become clearer after the dust of the first round settled, they could not have been more misguided. With one round in the books, it was truly up in the air between the top four teams, which included Harlandale and Floresville, both at 6-1, with Medina Valley and Uvalde right on their tails at 5-2. The Panthers, now 17-16 on the season, split matches last week with Floresville and Kennedy to close out the first round with a gut-wrencher that would certainly test the fortitude of this team

down the stretch against Floresville. Against the Jaguars last Tuesday night in Floresville, the Panthers busted out with a lot of momentum and won the first two games 25-16 and 25-23, but then dropped a very close game that could have closed out the match but the Jaguars prevailed 27-25. Floresville then rallied the troops and dug in deep to reclaim their home court advantage closing out the Panthers in the final two games 25-18 and 15-11. Then on Friday, the Panthers completely annihilated the Kennedy Rockets 25-17, 25-12 and 25-9 to close out the first

round of play. The two losses in district play came at the hands of Harlandale at Panther Gym and most recently to the other front-runner Floresville on the road, but the Panthers also knocked off the Uvalde Lobos at home and will have to travel to an always hostile and vocal environment in Uvalde in the second round. The Panthers have relied all year on the strong hitting of senior Jillian Mangold and junior Ashley Persyn while Katelyn Holzhaus and Lauren Sotelo have proved to be a solid hitters and blockers at the net. Alex Williams has shown that

her year of experience at setting last year has paid off with junior Savannah Schmidt also showing some good signs of putting the ball where it needs to be for the big hitters. Brooke Beck continues to be a solid back row player in her role as the libero and has a ton of experience to add to the squad. Medina Valley’s stretch run for a district championship begins this week when the Panthers host the Southside Cardinals on Friday Oct. 11 at Panther Gym. Next Tuesday the Panthers will travel to Uvalde for a huge matchup with the Lobos. Game time for both matches is 6 p.m.

The tennis team had a crucial win on Saturday against Harlandale. Girls and boys doubles all experienced success. The team also did very well in singles play with wins coming from Justin Mireles, Corey Modgling, Trey Gonzales and Dalton Masters. The girls had similar success with Cassandra Schorr, Becca Kane, left, Haley Masters, below, and Lauren Keller all winning. The team will begin district tournament play on Tuesday when they face Memorial at home. (Photos by Janine Modgling)
