It’s May and the good times keep rolling in! We can’t wait for you to join us again this month for more excitement as we kick off the summer season and celebrate yet another influential time of our lives…

The Decade of Victory: 1940-1949 It should come as no surprise that World War II would be the focus of the era. Being at war again, expectations associated with daily life had changed completely. In the United States, mass numbers of men were called upon to fight the war, and women were tasked with filling the role of men in the workplace; the great exodus from housewife to business woman. For many, this was both an immense challenge and an opportunity as they were forced to experience complete independence for the first time. As a result, modern innovations such as the inhome refrigerator and the frozen “T.V. Dinner” were introduced to supplement the newly working woman, allowing her more ease to simultaneously run a household and earn income all on her own. Times were tough, efficiency was essential, and our nation was determined to roll up its sleeves and power through. Roosevelt and Eisenhower played an integral part in leading and comforting the soldiers overseas as well as the citizens left at home. The infamous United Service Organization (USO) was developed, creating synergy between multiple charitable organizations to provide emotional support for the troops. The Office of War strategized by

requiring entertainment platforms to broadcast more uplifting messages. Propaganda became priority: Radio was a lifeline to the happenings of the war, and the most popular shows began to bleed over into television. Movies and musical theater had a heyday with scripts that provided an escape from reality and evoked the motivation that the people needed to stay positive and come out of the ashes victoriously. The U.S. government was determined to instill hope - and the tactics worked. Although wrought with great loss after many battles in Europe, and even on our own shores at Pearl Harbor, the United States emerged from the war as the world’s newest Super Power. Proud men returned home to their wives with a new lease on life, most women returned to their housework, but with a new sense of strength, and the great Baby Boom soon followed, creating a unique, new generation to lead us into the future. The events we underwent left us forever changed, and the memorable productions from cinema, radio, and television remain nostalgic relics which continue to influence our culture today. To recognize how this great decade has shaped our present, we will be providing you with many fun activities and themed social events surrounding the era. Be sure to keep an eye out for upcoming event announcements, including a few where we will be driving food donations and charity in the true spirit of the U.S.O.!

Thoughts from the Director of Fun

Community Spotlight

I am very excited about the conference I will be attending in Denver the first week of May.It is a wonderful opportunity to share, learn and grow. This will be the third Food & Fun conference that I have attended. Gathered together are 28 Directors of Fun and 28 Directors of Dietary. Our time is spent learning together and split apart to focus on our individual departments. Our first year one of my favorite subjects that we learned was called “Sensitivity Training.” This course helped individuals to

We love to surprise you, try new things and bring something FUN every day. We love your ideas as well, it helps us create the monthly calendar for you. If there is something new you would like to do or try, let us know. If you have an idea on how

understand physically and emotionally what you go through on a daily basis. Last year one of the focus courses was on time management, additionally I learned a great deal about leadership and team building at a beach building sandcastles with 5 other Directors of Fun. Hands on learning is my favorite. I look forward to returning to Michigan with new knowledge and skills to help me serve you!

Executive Director’s Corner The month of May symbolizes, birth, renewal and a fresh start as is witnessed by the budding trees, fresh blades of grass and soon to be blooming flowers. It’s a month for renewed energy which has shown expression by many residents taking advantage of the beautiful weather with outdoor strolls while enjoying the sunshine. Hooray for warmer weather, sunshine and the opportunity to be outdoors, without snow boots, once again. If you haven’t already, it’s a perfect opportunity to participate in the Spectrum Steppers Walkers Group and enjoy the stroll with conversation and your neighbor.

As May is also the month to honor all women who shower love to their extended families, I would like to take this time and wish all the mothers, aunts, sisters and grandmothers a very Happy Mother’s Day! As a proverb eloquently stated, “God could not be everywhere therefore he made mothers” Happy May, Happy Mother’s Day and a big HOORAY!!!!! For the next season to begin!

Joann Liccardello Executive Director
