The Decade of Victory: 1940-1949 It should come as no surprise that World War II would be the focus of the era. Being at war again, expectations associated with daily life had changed completely. In the United States, mass numbers of men were called upon to fight the war, and women were tasked with filling the role of men in the workplace; the great exodus from housewife to business woman. For many, this was both an immense challenge and an opportunity as they were forced to experience complete independence for the first time. As a result, modern innovations such as the inhome refrigerator and the frozen “T.V. Dinner” were introduced to supplement the newly working woman, allowing her more ease to simultaneously run a household and earn income all on her own. Times were tough, efficiency was essential, and our nation was determined to roll up its sleeves and power through. Roosevelt and Eisenhower played an integral part in leading and comforting the soldiers overseas as well as the citizens left at home. The infamous United Service Organization (USO) was developed, creating synergy between multiple charitable organizations to provide emotional support for the troops. The Office of War strategized by

requiring entertainment platforms to broadcast more uplifting messages. Propaganda became priority: Radio was a lifeline to the happenings of the war, and the most popular shows began to bleed over into television. Movies and musical theater had a heyday with scripts that provided an escape from reality and evoked the motivation that the people needed to stay positive and come out of the ashes victoriously. The U.S. government was determined to instill hope - and the tactics worked. Although wrought with great loss after many battles in Europe, and even on our own shores at Pearl Harbor, the United States emerged from the war as the world’s newest Super Power. Proud men returned home to their wives with a new lease on life, most women returned to their housework, but with a new sense of strength, and the great Baby Boom soon followed, creating a unique, new generation to lead us into the future. The events we underwent left us forever changed, and the memorable productions from cinema, radio, and television remain nostalgic relics which continue to influence our culture today. To recognize how this great decade has shaped our present, we will be providing you with many fun activities and themed social events surrounding the era. Be sure to keep an eye out for upcoming event announcements, including a few where we will be driving food donations and charity in the true spirit of the U.S.O.!

Community Spotlight

We celebrate a very special holiday in May: Mother’s Day! The role of “Mom” is both rewarding and challenging. It is a journey I will always hold very close to my heart. It is an ongoing gift that keeps growing, changing and offering new surprises. I am very proud of my mom. She instilled values in me for which I am forever grateful. I made it my own motherly mission to pass on those very same values to my children. I have had the priviledge to raise two beautiful daughters, and I am quite

In the spirit of Spring and new beginnings, we are thrilled to welcome new baby Madison Nicole to the world! Madison’s mother, Dana S., has been a team member since 2006. Residents and team members anxiously awaited Madison’s arrival, and we are so happy she is finally here. Dylan, 3,

sure they will someday pass those values on as well. Happy Mother’s Day to everyone here at Maple Heights, from the bottom of my heart. Thank you to all our grandmothers, mothers and daughters for this beautiful, natural journey that will be passed down to every generation to come. Happy Mother’s Day and many blessings to us all!

Spring is in full swing! After such a harsh winter, I am ready to get out in my backyard to dig around in the garden. I bet everyone else is feeling the same way, which is why I am happy to announce our upcoming Resident Garden! Thanks to several requests, we are now in the planning stage of installing an elevated boxed garden for our residents to take charge of. Our hopes are to harvest tasty vegetables and cultivate beautiful flowers for everyone to enjoy. We are surveying our campus

for a convenient, easily accesible area, and the elevated boxes will make it possible for all to join in on the action. So get your gardening gloves and sun hats, because we’ll be planting soon! If you have any suggestions, please feel free to see me or Claudia. I look forward to seeing what our inaugural gardening season brings!
