Times of Our Lives

Decade of Family: 1950-1959 By Lindsey Glenn

As we cruise into June, the warm days just get a little sweeter, don’t they? This month, as we continue to celebrate the Times of Our Lives, we are so excited to delight you with a myriad of nostalgic and fun activities surrounding the Nifty 1950s. So much learning, team-building, brainstorming, and fun was had by all!

The Fun Team poses for a great group photo!

We had a 1950s Day! Everyone dressed up, ate at a vintage diner, and went bowling together.

Lincoln Meadows won for best flavor - and it was DELICIOUS! Congrats to a great team!

The teams also went on a scavenger hunt through the city. Congrats to our group of winners!

Villas of Shelby won best presentation for their great use of Spectrum’s Core Values!

Together, we created a masterpiece, just like we try to do with our jobs every day!

We brought Fun and Food together for a Guacamole competition. Our judges really had their mouths full!

Palmilla WOWED judges with great flavor AND a spectacular performance, making them the overall competition winners!

The Decade of Family: 1950-1959 It seems more than appropriate that this would be the decade focused on family. The USA was still recovering from World War II. Brave servicemen had come home to their wives with a new lease on life and the strong desire to start or grow a family. Americans were now able to purchase items that were not available during the war which brought on a wave of new consumerism, and allowed for corporate expansion and many new job opportunities. Men who were away at war were now able to re-enter the work force, and thousands of women across the country were able to return to the home to nurture their growing families. Despite the new conflicts developing across the globe with Korea and the USSR, things were looking up for American culture and innovation. Television continued on its path to extreme popularity as most households now had a television in the family room, and the world had access to news and entertainment like never before. Becoming a prominent part of daily life, families would gather around the set to tunein for popular shows like American Bandstand and Davy Crockett. Here, they would eat meals, play board games, and spend quality time

together. Color television also made its debut during this time. Television began to mold America. Owning a car was also the norm, and driving for leisure became even more popular. Road trips to theme parks like the new Disneyland became a must-do activity among families. For many, cruising the new highway systems just for the fun of it became the trend. Business owners recognized the new fad and roadways became spattered with social stops like drive-in movies, diners, and burger joints to cater to the growing crowd of every day travelers. Teenagers capitalized on the exciting new trend the most, and separated themselves from the older generation with their own unique fashion sense, musical tastes, and dance styles. Poodle skirts, saddle shoes, pony tails, and blue jeans swept the nation’s young generation. Rock and Roll music was introduced to the population when artists like Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly entered the scene, breaking the mold and paving the way for modern music. Fashion and entertainment had more attitude than ever. This was the Nifty Fifties, and is one of the most fun and memorable eras of our lifetime. Come and cruise with us this month as we celebrate the 1950s with activities and events dedicated to the fashions and fads of the times, including our monthly main event, Cruisin’ Route 66!

Summer brings pleasant memories of summer vacations, so it is appropriate that we will be recognizing “the decade of family” this month, celebrating 1950-1959. The theme this month will be “Cruisin’ Route 66”. John Romero will be here, featuring music from the 50’s on June 12th. On family vacations along Route 66, it was probably Dad driving the car. We will celebrate all the Dads on Father’s Day with a scrumptious brunch: the first seating will be 11:00-12:00 and the second seating 12:45-1:45. Lakeview

Lakeview Senior Living has the capability to automatically deduct residents’ rent from their checking accounts. is excited to celebrate our 5th year anniversary on June 19th with dinner, dancing and entertainment by Cliff Spratt. June was a popular month to be born! There are many birthdays to celebrate this month, so RSVP for our birthday dinner on the 26th, with entertainment by Jerry Galloway. So many events and so much fun!

Executive Director’s Corner On June 15, 2009, at 11 a.m., Alyce Holmes and her husband, Jim, walked through the front door of Lakeview Senior Living. The staff, including Kelly Hesser (Community Relations Director), Judy Blatcher (Concierge), Alex Ryan (Director of Maintenance and Housekeeping), Debbie Martinez (Housekeeper), and Terri Kent (Executive Director) stretched a gold ribbon across the lobby for Alyce and Jim to cut, and gave them glasses of champagne to toast the occasion. They were our very first residents in an otherwise empty building. Linda Drumm (Business Office Manager) and Jackie Montemayor (Cook) joined the staff within a couple weeks. Dorothy Brewer, Evelyn Collier, Doris Loeff, Mary Ryan, and Barbara Sears are our Gold Key Members, those folks who reserved an apartment before we were open and moved in shortly after opening. We are thrilled to still have them all as a vital part of Lakeview. Five years later, the community is thriving, with occupancy consistently running between 98% to 100%, since just before our 2nd anniversary. We have built a successful community, known for meeting and exceeding our residents’ expectations. Lakeview was justifiably proud to have

been named by parent company Spectrum Retirement Communities as its 2013 Top Community of the Year, a significant accomplishment at any point, but noteworthy for a community that was not yet even at its 5th anniversary. New residents may be reluctant or even resistive to moving in, especially from their own homes, but quickly find out the convenience, services, dining program, socialization, and activities are exactly what they were missing living in their homes. Instead of giving up their independence, they find they have actually gained independence back from being so dependent on family or friends to help them. There is nothing more rewarding to us than to see the close friendships that develop between residents—and even some romances—and residents finding a more fulfilling life here! To celebrate the occasion, please join us for a special Anniversary Champagne Dinner and Dance at 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 19th, in the Dining Room (for Lakeview residents only). R.S.V.P. to the concierge before June 16th.
