It’s hard to believe that March and springtime is already upon us. As the saying goes - time flies when you’re having fun! And as if the prospect of warmer weather isn’t exciting enough, we at Spectrum will be making sure that March comes in like a lion as we celebrate The Roaring 20s with you… The Decade of Culture: 1920-1929 As the dust from WWI was settling, an interesting era began to emerge. Overseas, new political powers were on the rise. In the USA, families experienced a growing presence of violence as the KKK became a more prevalent social group. The world we know today was being shaped by big changes. Some of those changes included positive new innovations. Henry Ford made it possible for consumers to own a personal motor car for $290. As a result, roads were paved for thousands of miles across the country, reducing the amount of time and effort it took to travel great distances, and thus introducing the new concept of traveling for leisure. In spite of progress in innovation, many mothers still made great efforts to pass down traditional skills to their daughters: unique talents like tatting, beading, and crocheting. All of this history molded the 1920s, but we should all remember what really made the 20s roar:

March 2014

Prohibition, the nationwide ban on alcohol, swept the country and changed modern culture forever. While some things became strict, others loosened up. Jazz music broke the mold with its edgy beats and unbridled rhythms. Underground rackets for distilling and distributing liquor formed a new crime ring – the first real “gangsters” in US history. Secret Speakeasies and gathering places for patrons to drink and dance socially began to emerge and quietly grow in popularity. And as women began to take a stronger stance in the workplace and politics, women’s clothing took on a more lax, “ready to wear” appearance. Cosmetics became more popular, and the unique “flapper” style was introduced along with the term itself. The 1920s were a time to remember, and now here we are in 2014, making new history – new memories together. This March, we have many exciting events and programs planned for you. Be sure to keep your eye out for the schedule as we will be having (among other things) a Roaring 20s Party, as well as a top secret Speakeasy-Style Happy Hour! “Can’t repeat the past?... Why, of course you can!” – The Great Gatsby

Thoughts from the Director of Fun This month we will focus on 19201929, the “Decade of Culture.” Here are some of the fun activities planned: On March 3, our beading project will be designs for the 20’s with Crazy 4 Beadz. Being a “Cajun”, I thought it would be great to have a Mardi Gras party on March 4 and “Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler” (Let The Good Times Roll!). Enjoy movies that take

place in the 20’s including Seabiscuit, The Aviator and The Great Gatsby. For St. Patrick’s Day, join us for dinner and a performance by Celtic Dancers. Patty Shaw will entertain us during our Roaring 20’s Happy Hour on March 28 at The Speakeasy Nightclub with music from the “Jazz Age.” Put on your beaver coat and your flapper dress and join in the fun.

This month we would like to recognize our resident volunteers who do so much for Lakeview and its residents. We are truly blessed to have these residents who give so much of their time and talent. Please join us in thanking all these wonderful people: Our Hospitality Committee meets monthly. The members, Esther Annett, Mary Hofstra, Hank Cornellisson, Herb Stwalley and Barbara Sears, welcome all new residents by taking them to lunch, visiting with them, and answering questions they might have. Helmuth Froeschle facilitates the Veterans’ Group, the 90+ group and the discussion group. Esther Annett uses her green thumb to help our indoor and outdoor plants thrive, watering and pruning them. Joy Kelpis helps in many areas, but her true talent is helping with décor. She has put together many seasonal bouquets. Joy Kelpis, Alyce Holmes, Barbara Sears, Yvonne Rehder and Dorothy Madonna are always eager to help with flowers and centerpieces for our dining room and common areas. Celia Maske takes meticulous care of our library. She put all the books in their correct spot on the shelf and organized it all! Celia also helps with walking dogs for residents. Celia and Joy Kelpis worked on getting skits together for our Lakeview Players to perform. Dorothy Madonna is always there to help with administrative tasks or anything that needs attention, such as distributing memos. Toni Farquhar, Helen Achatz and Dorothy Brewer are responsible for the excellent choice of movies shown nightly in the theater. Many nights we have a full house! Toni also is a good resource for great ideas for outings. The Lakeview Stitchers, Crocheters and Knitters Group do many things.

They meet weekly and make layette items to donate to the Jefferson County Action Center and Sacred Heart House and Shelter. They make scarves and hats to donate to the Veteran’s Recovery Program. Their latest project is crocheting mats made out of plastic grocery bags for the Denver Rescue Mission. It takes 496 bags to make one mat! It takes one hour just to finish one row. These ladies spend enormous amounts of their time and talents to help those less fortunate. The group includes Joy Kelpis, Ellie Gager, June LeTerneau, Dorothy Madonna, Louise McNutt, Maxine Millen, Rose Segre, Marti Stahmer and Ann Wilson. When our Community Relations department wants to show prospective residents how lovely Lakeview apartments are, they know they can call on Carol Carlberg, Evelyn Collier, Helmuth and Louise Froeschle, Beth Halacy, Paula Hollenbach, Lorraine Keck, Bea LaPorte, June LeTerneau, Gustav Lundberg, Barbara Sears and Willetta Stanton at any time. Our HUGS committee, Alyce Holmes, Yvonne Rehder, Margaret Magill and Joan Hieber, meets once a week to work on bags of goodies and cards for those residents who have been ill or just need extra TLC. Margaret Magill has become a “Lakeview Ambassador” who visits with residents and helps any residents experiencing challenges. Paquita Couch also welcomes new residents and walks with residents who come back from rehab. A big thank you from all of us here at Lakeview for all you do to make our community great!
