Just as Dorothy so eloquently told us as she tapped her brilliant ruby slippers together, there really is no place like home. We all have fond memories of the safety and comforts associated with what we have called “home” over the years, and we at Spectrum truly hope that each of you feels just as affectionately at home today, here in your community. Join us this month as we reminisce about what “home” means to you, and as we celebrate another monumental time of our lives…

The Decade of Resilience and Community: 1930-1939 After the war, the stock market crashed and The Great Depression took hold on the world. Many families struggled to make ends meet as entire industries dried up, unemployment rates rose and, for those who were lucky enough to retain a job, salaries were drastically reduced. It would be a long road to recovery and a great challenge to simply survive. Though times were tough, we have probably all learned at least once in our lives that through great pain also comes great progress. One of the first female pilots in our history, Emelia Earhart, was making history in the aviation industry, and for womankind. Politically, two presidents, Herbert Hoover and Franklin D. Roosevelt, made their marks during their terms as they attempted (from very different

April 2014

points of view) to improve the state of the economy. And in the name of entertainment, people found pleasure in simple forms of leisure. President Roosevelt, an avid stamp collector, started a fad among hobbyists. Traditional parlor games as well as board games became all the rage in households as Parker Brothers introduced the still-popular game of Monopoly. Gambling increased and also became an outlet as people sought any means to add to their income. The attendance and radio play of spectator sports like baseball and horse racing also grew in popularity. And in Hollywood, film and film-making flourished to serve as an escape for the suffering people of the Depression. Perhaps one of the most notable film releases of the time is The Wizard of Oz due to the exorbitant cost to produce it, the elaborate set and costume design, and the breathtaking revelation of Technicolor used during the opening scenes. This time of our lives, with so much necessary effort to survive, revealed the best and worst attributes of our very being. There is no shortage of remarkable tales from the era… What experiences or stories do you remember from this time, and how did they shape who you are today?

Monthly Events Overview

We celebrate Volunteer month the week of April 6th – 12th. We are so fortunate here at Pine Ridge to have the world’s greatest volunteers. Joyce, Rose, Shirley, Cindi. Laurie you are appreciated so much. Thank you for all that you do to enrich our lives. We are also thankful for the Henry Ford Key Club that comes each month for an activity and the St. Matthias Youth Group who will be here again to help with Ice Cream Social on April 27th. A special Thank You to Cowboy Joe for the great entertainment he provides each month. Thank you also to our Hugs Committee; Dave, Cathy, Sandy and Betty for all the cheerfulness and sunshine that you share with everyone. All of the help from the volunteers really enhances our Activity Program. If you would like to volunteer, just give me a call.

It is once again time for our annual Pine Ridge Senior Prom. The students from the Key Club at Henry Ford High School will be joining us on Wednesday April 30th from 6:30 – 8:00pm to help us celebrate. We will enjoy the music from Jeff the DJ, have some delicious refreshments and of course the crowning of our new King

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, EVERYONE!!! A few special trips this month include a visit to The Royal Treat Tea Room in Roseville for some tea and scones on April 7th. The OPC is presenting “Magic on Broadway” a musical production and we are planning to attend on Wednesday April 23rd. We will also have lunch there. We have been invited to attend The Arts Academy in the Woods Evening of the Arts at the Macomb Center on Thursday April 17th. Be sure to sign up and join us for these outings and our other activities. Remember, staying active helps us to stay healthy.

Executive Director Spotlight This time of year we can’t help but think about April Showers bringing May flowers. So, let’s cheer when it rains (since it’s not snowing anymore) and look for plenty of flowers to bloom. A good way to get us in the mood for blooming flowers is to celebrate Plant Appreciation Day on April 13th. We will be having an OPEN HOUSE that day from 9 AM to 5 PM. If you know of someone who would like to consider our community for their next home, please invite them out that day. We will have a plant for them to take home.

If that person moves into our community, we will happily plant a generous $1,000 resident referral fee rent credit to your account. So, start making some calls today or have your family members talk about us to everyone they know and before you know it, our community will be hopping full of new people who will become part of our Happy Pine Ridge Family.

and Queen. The photo booth was so much fun last year that we will have it again to add to the festivities of the evening. Dress in your prom attire or Sunday best and be ready for an evening of fun and reminiscing. Rumor has it that we will once again have our “afterglow” party to chat about this fun event.

Community Spotlight When we think of April , we think of the beautiful flowers that are starting to peak through the ground. Flowers reveal a beauty that only nature can provide Our residents are looking forward to sitting outside in their screened in patio porches on some of the warmer days. The Activities

department is getting ready to order flowers and hanging baskets to add to the beautification of the residents gardens Our residents and staff are looking forward to the sweet smells and warmer air that only Spring can bring.
