It’s hard to believe that March and springtime is already upon us. As the saying goes - time flies when you’re having fun! And as if the prospect of warmer weather isn’t exciting enough, we at Spectrum will be making sure that March comes in like a lion as we celebrate The Roaring 20s with you… The Decade of Culture: 1920-1929 As the dust from WWI was settling, an interesting era began to emerge. Overseas, new political powers were on the rise. In the USA, families experienced a growing presence of violence as the KKK became a more prevalent social group. The world we know today was being shaped by big changes. Some of those changes included positive new innovations. Henry Ford made it possible for consumers to own a personal motor car for $290. As a result, roads were paved for thousands of miles across the country, reducing the amount of time and effort it took to travel great distances, and thus introducing the new concept of traveling for leisure. In spite of progress in innovation, many mothers still made great efforts to pass down traditional skills to their daughters: unique talents like tatting, beading, and crocheting. All of this history molded the 1920s, but we should all remember what really made the 20s roar:

March 2014

Prohibition, the nationwide ban on alcohol, swept the country and changed modern culture forever. While some things became strict, others loosened up. Jazz music broke the mold with its edgy beats and unbridled rhythms. Underground rackets for distilling and distributing liquor formed a new crime ring – the first real “gangsters” in US history. Secret Speakeasies and gathering places for patrons to drink and dance socially began to emerge and quietly grow in popularity. And as women began to take a stronger stance in the workplace and politics, women’s clothing took on a more lax, “ready to wear” appearance. Cosmetics became more popular, and the unique “flapper” style was introduced along with the term itself. The 1920s were a time to remember, and now here we are in 2014, making new history – new memories together. This March, we have many exciting events and programs planned for you. Be sure to keep your eye out for the schedule as we will be having (among other things) a Roaring 20s Party, as well as a top secret Speakeasy-Style Happy Hour! “Can’t repeat the past?... Why, of course you can!” – The Great Gatsby

Spring is in the Air! Ok, maybe not, it’s been a brutal winter and it looks like spring will never come. However, technically spring falls on March 20 this month. What does that mean for us? Typically two to three more snow storms, but it does give us a chance to look forward to days with more sunshine, warmer temperatures and for those baseball

fans, the games begin only a few weeks after the official first day of spring! No matter what the weather is doing outside I encourage you to come out of the apartment and join us for any of the activities. While it may be cold and snowy outside it is jumping at the Gardens!

Jason Stitt

Director’s Corner Another Month has arrived! Spring is just around the corner. With that in mind, think about a spring cleaning with housekeeping. Let

them freshen up your apartment for the sun and warmer weather. Please see Dawn Groves about scheduling and prices.

Community Spotlight Resident Spotlight: Anne Foerstner ““… the New Woman of the 1920s boldly asserted her right to dance, drink, smoke, and date—to work her own property, to live free of the strictures that governed her mother’s generation. … In many ways, she controlled her own destiny.”” Joshua Zeitz

Ann Foerstner grew up in Lakewood and has lived in the area her entire life. Ann looks fondly back on her time in 2nd grade when she attended a boarding school where her three aunts, who happened to be nuns, taught. She only spent six months there but was treated like royalty. Ann was married to Steve Foerstner for 66 years and really fell for him as he was tall dark and handsome! They have five have children, two boys and three girls. Some favorite places to vacation are Hilton Head, Las Vegas and Florida. Ann loves to

knit, crochet, read, golf and play bridge. Ann has a quick wit and great sense of humor. She leaves us with a few words of wisdom. One is to have patience, don’t judge too quickly. Finally, there will always be a spat, but kiss and make up!
