Spectrum Spectrum Concerts Concerts Berlin Berlin

Annette von Hehn Violine Julia-Maria Kretz Violine Hartmut Rohde Viola Frank Dodge Violoncello Daniel Blumenthal Klavier

This splendidly performed and recorded disc, with interesting and informative annotations by the composer’s grandson L awrence Weschler, is a perfect place to begin—or continue. AMERICAN RECORD GUIDE , Lehman Played to the hilt by violinist Annette von Hehn and pianist Daniel Blumenthal (Violin Sonata). The three Burlesques for piano (1923) share the same spirit, and Blumenthal delivers sparkling, virtuoso performances. Cellist Frank Dodge, playing a rich, deep instrument, elevates this solemn music (three Impromptus) to near-masterpiece status. FANFARE , James North 8.559696-97 8.559696-97

This has the instantly creative world that will interest the soloist and audience … discarding everything that is not essential in the final composition, a zeal that permeates her output. Helps’s impressive pianism is further illustrated in excerpts from mixed recitals he gave in Berlin in 1997 and 2000 including his own Shall We Dance, an homage in slow waltz time to Schoenberg and the Second Viennese School … The Spectrum musicians, centered on the core of the excellent ATOS Trio, pay tribute to him in devoted performances, well recorded, of several works for chamber ensemble. No praise is too high for Spectrum Concerts Berlin, who spare no effort in bringing Schulhoff freshly to life. In fact, you’d be hard pressed to find a more winning introduction to his output, which is also beautifully recorded.
