FINANCIAL SUMMARY

A Year of Change Dear Friends, This past year has been a year of change for Special Love, beginning with the passing of our beloved Founder, Tom Baker, in January. Tom and his wife, Sheila, founded Special Love in 1983 as a dream borne of the loss of their daughter, Julie, in 1976. Reading about a camp in upstate New York that catered to children with cancer, they wanted to provide the same opportunity to children like Julie in the Washington metropolitan area. Tom approached the National Cancer Institute where Julie had been treated, and the Northern Virginia 4-H Center to collaborate on the weeklong camp, and in 1983, Camp Fantastic debuted, hosting 29 campers. Today, Camp Fantastic hosts over 100 pediatric cancer patients each year, and Special Love has grown to provide a week-long camp for the patients’ siblings and weekend camps and getaways for patients, siblings and families, as well as emergency financial aid and educational scholarships. Our programs reach families not only in the Washington area, but as far away as Colorado and Utah. From their strife, hundreds of children experience the joy and support of camps and adventure activities each year, and families have found a community of support providing unity, trust and respite. This year also saw a change within the Special Love team when long-time CEO, Dave Smith, decided to follow his heart and transition to the newly-created role of Senior Director, Outreach and Programs. This new position, allows Dave to focus on leading the organization’s efforts to expand and enhance its outreach and programs to service even more children and families. With Dave’s transition, Special Love welcomed Jan Bresch in the role of Executive Director. Jan joined Special Love after spending the past 15 years as the Chief Operating Officer of the Prevent Cancer Foundation, advisor and committee member to other non-profits, and as a six-year member of Special Love’s Board of Directors. In November, Special Love welcomed another new team member, Kim Jappell, as Director of Development. In addition to Kim’s fundraising experience, she too has a long history with Special Love, having come up through our sibling BRASS Camp, serving as a camp counselor and on the BRASS planning committee, as well as a member of Special Love’s Board of Directors. Throughout the changes that have occurred this year the caring culture that defines Special Love remains as strong as ever. It guides us by placing the needs of the families we serve at the center of everything we do. This leadership team of experienced, talented, and dedicated individuals will ensure that Special Love thrives for another 37 years and beyond. Sincerely, John Taylor Board President

UNITY, TRUST, RESPITE Special Love has welcomed children with cancer from Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Utah, Virginia, Washington, D.C., Wisconsin and West Virginia.

6

UNITY l TRUST l RESPITE

Since its beginning in 1983, Special Love has grown from just Camp Fantastic, to include camps and adventure programs for family members, a unique siblings-only camp and a weekend getaway for parents. Recognizing the financial straits that often face a family battling pediatric cancer, the organization also established funds to provide emergency financial relief and postsecondary scholarships for teens who have participated in Special Love programs.

PROGRAMS Each year, Special Love provides unity, trust and respite for children with cancer and their families through our free camps and adventure programs, get-away weekends, emergency financial assistance, and educational scholarships for young adults who want to move on with their lives. Hundreds of children ages 7 to 17 find their joy and laughter by participating in a camp or adventure program, and families find the security of quality family time that is often hard to come by when a child has cancer. Our YAC’ers (young adults) find friends, understanding, and acceptance from others who are also navigating the waters of their “new normal.” Our community of support for the children and families is vast and ever-present. As one camp parent recently described it, “Your work is like a pebble in a lake, the ripple effects are felt far and wide. We are grateful for the part you played, and continue to play in our story."

Camp Fantastic UNITY. A week where pediatric cancer patients get to be just kids and build strong bonds that will help them on their cancer journey, and stay with them for a lifetime. In August we welcomed 109 patients to camp, ages 7 to 17, for a fun-filled week of swimming, canoeing, horseback riding, rock climbing, arts and crafts, sing-alongs, campfires and hours of laughter. Camp Fantastic would not be possible without our wonderful partnership with the National Cancer Institute, whose doctors and nurses are with our campers every step of the way. They join in the fun and craziness, while ensuring each camper never misses a treatment. Thanks to their presence, Camp Fantastic is able to accept the highest-acuity patients in the nation, giving them a much-needed break from the hospital and feelings of isolation. Nearly 100 on-site volunteers also make camp possible by giving a week of their lives to create camp magic. Nearly half of our volunteers are former campers and/or patients themselves. Finally, we are thankful to the many community organizations and individuals who provide meals, games and fun throughout the week.

The hospital saved our son’s life, but camp saved his soul.

BRASS (BRothers And SiSters) Camp TRUST. Special Love’s week-long BRASS Camp is just for the siblings of cancer patients and provides not only the adventures of camp, but also a place to find camaraderie and peer empathy, while allowing for open dialogue among campers and counselors to ensure the siblings experience the same comforting support as their sick brother or sister.

10

UNITY l TRUST l RESPITE

Held at Camp Maria on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland, BRASS hosted 109 siblings, ages 7 to 16, in July. Like Camp Fantastic, BRASS is fortunate to have many wonderful volunteers who assume the roles of counselors and counselorsin-training, generously giving a week of their time to make camp come to life. Nearly 95 percent of the counselors are former BRASS campers or siblings as well.

Our kids had an amazing first year at BRASS camp. They went to bed sad, missing camp and the new friends. They are talking about next year already!

Parents Weekend RESPITE. A special weekend getaway for parents, planned by parents,

that provides them the respite they need to share and support one another in a small group setting. Together they can deal with the cancer journey and ultimately regain a sense of control. The weekend is for parents of patients and survivors who are 25 years old or younger and still live at home, as well as bereaved parents. November’s retreat theme was “Strong at the Broken Places” and welcomed 36 couples. Saturday morning they enjoyed a Kintsugi exercise led by Special Love parent and board member Shari Fisher, along with her daughter, Julia Jones. The exercise of breaking pottery and putting the pieces back together again provided a bonding opportunity for not only the couples themselves, but with other couples as well. It spoke to the strength parents and families in the cancer journey gain with their child. The afternoon was all about being pampered, and pampered they were by wonderful volunteers providing such rejuvenating activities as; Reiki, yoga, massages, makeovers, and scrapbooking. Saturday night’s Disco-themed dinner dance allowed parents to shake off the weight of cancer and instead shake their “groove thing” in their best platform shoes, spandex, bell bottom-jeans and afros to music provided by former Special Love camper and now volunteer, DJ Malcolm Jones. Sunday morning was for reflection and sharing with old and new friends made through the weekend, friends who will see them through the good times and bad.

Weekend GetAway’s Throughout the year, Special Love hosts a variety of weekend camp and adventure programs, which provide both respite and adventure experiences for patients, survivors, siblings, and parents. The weekends include: FANTASTIC FRIENDS WEEKEND – a weekend getaway camp for 13 to 17-year-old cancer patients to share with their best friends, who they invite to join them for the weekend, giving them a glimpse into another part of the patient’s world. This past July’s weekend hosted 38 campers and friends who enjoyed all the fun of camping and a day at a waterpark. YOUNG ADULTS WITH CANCER WEEKEND – designed especially for our young adult cancer survivors ages 18 to 25, affectionately known in our community as “YACers.” YAC Weekend, held at the end of May, offered fun activities ranging from the whitewater adventurous to strictly relaxing, as well as an opportunity to just hang out and bond.

FANTASTIC WINTER WEEKEND for pediatric cancer patients 13 to 25 years of age to enjoy a weekend of winter sports such as skiing, snowboarding, tubing and sledding at Bryce Ski Resort in Mt. Jackson, Virginia. While temperatures were very cold, there was plenty of snow, which helped us enjoy a lot of great winter sports. We also had a cozy indoor fire, movies, and games back at the 4-H Center in Front Royal that night. SKI FAMILY WEEKEND held at Canaan Valley Ski Resort over the long Martin Luther King holiday weekend, the event saw lots sunshine and frigid temperatures, but it never slowed the 47 families from braving the elements to enjoy great skiing, snowboarding, tubing and sledding. When not outside, families could be found playing bingo, doing arts and crafts, watching a movie and even catching a big football game. There was something for everyone!

OCTOBERFEST – this year’s Fest, held at the 4-H Center in Front Royal, hosted 150 campers, siblings and parents, all set on making the most of pumpkins and parades! Families made costumes and enjoyed the festivities of Front Royal’s annual Festival of Leaves Parade, then went back to the 4-H center for an afternoon of pumpkin-carving, wall climbing, canoeing, arts & crafts, and of course trunk-or-treating. SPRING FAMILY AND REUNION – these warm-weather outings provided patients, families, survivors, and bereaved families the opportunity to reconnect and spend a weekend doing fun outdoor activities including sports, canoeing, and swimming. They also enjoyed an evening carnival complete with games and a huge prize table, in-house musical entertainment, and dodge ball!

Pop-Up Camps When families were too busy with treatment to get to camp, camp went to them! Our “pop-up camp” visits to area hospitals and clinics gave children the opportunity to make a craft, enjoy a camp snack, and find out more about Special Love camp-based opportunities. Parents got a short break, patients and siblings got to enjoy a fun activity, and Special Love began a new relationship – or fostered a growing one!

Holiday Party The holidays are always a festive time of the year that we love to celebrate with our families and volunteers. On December 2nd, nearly 200 family members and volunteers joined us for our annual holiday party at the Franconia Fire House. There were presents and laughter, great food and special treats, singing and face painting, magic tricks and tours of the fire house. Thank you to all the amazing volunteers who helped put the joy in joyous the fire house, Officer T.C. Williams and his crew, SOS4Cancer, the Marshall High School Choir, Captain Token, and of course Mr. and Mrs. Claus and the Grinch.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE The Kathy Russell Emergency Relief Fund assists the families of children with cancer by helping them meet everyday living expenses so they can focus on their struggle against cancer. In 2018, Special Love assisted more than 40 families from 10 different hospital systems with such basic needs as utilities, rent, insurance and auto repairs. Special Love does not distinguish between families who participate in our programs, and those who do not. A family in need is a family in need. 20

SPECIAL EVENTS Annual Spring Gala Special Love’s Annual Spring Gala on April 13th at the Hilton McLean in Tyson’s Corner once again was a smashing success, with more than 300 guests dancing, dining, bidding on auction items, networking, and charitable gaming. The Gala honored two very important partners: The Gwen Laulhere Foundation, who was inducted into our Circle of Love, and former Special Love Board member, Randy Schools, was named this year’s Light of Love. The Laulhere Foundation has funded BRASS Camp and other camps since 1999, providing more than $1 million in support. Bill Etter, the husband of Foundation President Tracy Laulhere, was on hand to accept the Circle of Love Award. Mr. Etter marveled at “everyone’s enthusiasm and genuine caring. The impact Special Love is making is impressive and the Laulhere Foundation is fortunate to play a small part.” Former president of the National Institute of Health’s Recreation & Welfare Association and Special Love board member Randy Schools accepted the third annual Light of Love Award, fittingly renamed in his honor. Mr. Schools has been instrumental in Special Love’s growth since its beginning.

The evening also paid tribute to Special Love’s late co-founder Tom Baker and his wife Sheila by announcing the From-the-Heart-Fund to support weekend camp programs and place a memorial to Tom at the Northern Virginia 4-H Center, the site of many Special Love camps.

Tom Baker Memorial Golf Tournament The 34th Annual Camp Fantastic Golf Tournament was held on June 8th at the Rock Harbor Golf Club in Winchester, Virginia. More than 150 golfers enjoyed a sunny day and great golf, and helped raise more than $40,000 in total revenue. Special thanks to our title sponsors, the Fort Collier Group, the Shockey Companies, and Loudoun Mutual, as well as to our Platinum, Diamond, and Gold Sponsors. A community event our beloved late founder, Tom Baker, enjoyed, the tournament was renamed in his honor.

Fall in Love 5k/10k Beautiful weather and nearly 350 enthusiastic walkers and runners provided the perfect recipe for Special Love’s 6th Annual Fall in Love 5k Run/Walk and 10k Run along the C&O Towpath in Washington, DC, on October 20th. We were grateful to have many returning race day sponsors including our Title Sponsor E-PAGA, as well as Clark Construction and Digital iBiz for their major sponsor support. Any race, especially a 5k and 10k, has many moving parts and Special Love is most grateful for the continued support and hard work of Race Director Katy Vertigan, as well as event founder and Special Love Board member Caroline Goon.
