Senior Living: How to Know What's Best For You Provided by Concordia Life Plan Community

For seniors, statements like “The only way I am leaving my house is feet first-in a pine box”, or “I’m not quite ready for the old folks home”, or maybe even “Promise me you will never put me in one of those places” were once common. While these may still be familiar misconceptions about senior living, the truth is, we are living longer and healthier lives. Seniors are embracing encore careers, learning new activities, volunteering, traveling, and more. They are researching ways to limit time on chores and household maintenance. They are tired of pouring money into costly upkeep. Older adults are finding value in having less and living more. In short, they are looking for a lock-and-leave lifestyle so they can enjoy more of what they love. Should I consider making a move? Or should I stay put? 2020 has given seniors more to consider. Isolation, lack of social interaction, access to essentials and healthcare have become a true concern. Everyone has felt the strain, including the family and friends on which older adults once relied. No matter your answer, it’s important to do the research. Take the time to learn about the senior living communities and organizations that exist, and how they are able to cover the needs you may have now and in the future. Nonprofits like VillagesOKC and its G.I.F.T program are a great place to start. Once you have assessed which area of care is right for you, it's time to start to shop! Stay open minded and informed. Remember, your decision is not just about you. Even if you are fiercely independent, the people in your life will be impacted by your choices. Understand the cost others might incur because of those choices. Their time, talent and treasure will be pulled to support you, unless you plan in advance. If you need help having a conversation or making a plan, the Senior Living Advisors at Concordia are here to help.

Have A Plan: None of us can fully know what our future needs might be, but most of us know someone who was caught in a crisis. Ask yourself, what if that happened to me? What would I want, what would I do, how would that play out?

Helpful Terminology Independent Living

Referred to as 55+ apartments or neighborhoods, luxury retirement living, etc. Some offer full services like dining, housekeeping and maintenance, while others do not. Some are for purchase, while others are rental. None of these communities are government regulated.* *Care communities are regulated. Their ratings are reported on medicare.gov.

Assisted Living

Month-to-month rental communities. They offer personal care assistance based on need. They provide three meals per day, activities, laundry service and housekeeping. Some communities have a registered nurse on property 24/7; some don’t. Some can address all acuity levels and others cannot. Fees are typically based on care needs.

Memory Care

Also month-to-month communities. These specialized communities are much like assisted living in their services, but they should also be equipped with dementia trained staff and full-care ability. Fees are also based on need.

Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs)/Life Plan

Skilled Nursing /LTC

Care can be a need for a short, post-hospital stay or for a significant personal care assistance need such as a debilitating stroke or those who have lost mobility. LTC (longterm care) may also be required.

A true CCRC/Life Plan community offers all levels of care (including LTC) on one campus and is regulated. Healthy, active older adults move to these communities looking for an assurance of care. These are sometimes referred to as “buy in” communities, but there is no purchase. An upfront and often refundable “entrance fee” is charged to provide guaranteed care for life.

Letter from the Editor...

Established 1993

Are you a baby boomer and/or a family caregiver? Do you feel pulled between work responsibilities, family life and caring for your parents? If so, that makes you part of the sandwich generation. There are 240,000+ caregivers in Oklahoma. Wow! Imagine a resource that could offer them guidance as they navigate through this transitional time in life. That resource is the Oklahoma Senior Journal (OSJ) and offering guidance to caregivers is why it was created in September 1993. For the past 29 years, OSJ has been bringing resources to the 50-plus, their families, and those who lovingly serve them. We produce 45,000 copies distributed to more than 600 locations every six months. No other publication for the 50-plus market in Oklahoma can boost your business like the OSJ. We are the first, original, and longest-running magazine for seniors and those who care for them. In addition to the magazine, we’re now going into our fifth year on-air with The Rise & Thrive OSJ Radio Hour. The radio show airs every Saturday morning on KZLS, The Eagle, 1640AM, at 9:05 a.m., and again at 10:05 a.m. (We are the official network in our market for the Dave Ramsey Show.) Plus, the OSJ has now had an app for your Smart device for the last six years! See page 8 for instructions on how to download the OSJ app to your phone or tablet. Due to popular demand, we are continuing our partnership with Senior GuidePost (seniorguidepost.com) as the source for business-to-business connections in the senior care industry. Business-to-business (B2B) simply means connecting senior industry services or products with retirement communities, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing facilities. Starting on page 33, this issue includes a 16-page business-to-business section in addition to our standard business-to-consumer resources. Pictured below is our expert Account Executive Director, Tanya Nash. She underpromises and overdelivers. Sound familiar? It should because that is exactly what OSJ does every day! Speaking of every day, Tanya has become an asset to OSJ’s mission and vision and is on track to make it a better publication - if that’s even possible! And no, she is not for hire!

George Orwell’s last written words were, “At 50, everyone has the face he deserves.” He died at age 46! We are the experts!

f you ask any vendor in the craft fair community, the most desired shows to partake in have large crowds, low booth rent, massive advertising and compassionate coordinators. This is exactly what the foundation of The Santa Market was modeled after.

Unhappy with the show choices available, Joan Clarke and Molly Nye decided to start a show of their own. Along with fellow coordinator Megan Nye, they found a few vendors, rented a banquet room at a local hotel, and The Santa Market was born. That one-room show has grown into one of the largest craft shows in the metro. Each year the show has added more vendors, expanded in location and increased in attendance. By the third year, Molly, Joan and Megan decided that the amount of year-round work that goes into the show should benefit a cause very close to them. Joan’s husband and Megan’s father, Russ, passed away from Alzheimer’s in 2007. Molly suggested they make The Santa Market a fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association of Oklahoma. In the nine years since, the show has raised over $170,000.00 for Alzheimer’s. It is a Gold Level Sponsor of the OKC Walk to End Alzheimer’s and in 2015, The Santa Market received the Channel 4 Pay It Forward Award. In 2019, The Santa Market, Inc. was formed and is now a certified 501(c)(3). The Santa Market is always the Friday and Saturday before Thanksgiving and is one of the best holiday shopping events of the year. This year it will be held at the OKC State Fair, Park Pavilion Building. While it is three ladies who work tirelessly to run The Santa Market, it could not be done without all the help of the quality vendors, loyal customers, volunteers, sponsors and donors. The organizers call it The Santa Market Family, and we hope you will be a part of it.

This Oklahoma City Business is a Proven Advocate for Seniors—Smooth Finish Roofing & Construction When Dennis Helm was young, he was in a family with a lot of problems. They had very little money to start with, and then his parents divorced. As the oldest child left at home at the time, Dennis felt responsible— but mostly very vulnerable. He watched his exhausted and stressed-out mom work two to three jobs at a time to try to keep her family afloat. He was always afraid someone was going to take advantage of her and their shaky financial state. Dennis remembers praying that his family would find people to trust when they needed help. Because of this time in his life, Dennis says that something became burned into him—a strong desire to help people. And he now strives to do this with his company, Smooth Finish Roofing & Construction. Advocating for seniors Unfortunately, unscrupulous scammers often take advantage of seniors. Dennis has become an advocate for seniors with Smooth Finish—and you can see the proven commitment he has to the senior community. He’s an industry partner and a member of OKALA (Oklahoma Assisted Living Association). He’s also a trusted industry partner with several senior organizations: The Oklahoma Senior Journal, Senior GuidePost, and The VillagesOKC.

BECKY IVINS Specializes in Helping Seniors on the Move By Eddie Roach Becky Ivins knows that moving from a lifelong home to a more manageable residence can be confusing and stressful for older adults. That’s why the longtime Oklahoma City realtor has developed a program that specializes in making the move smoother.

Becky Ivins

Ivins calls the program “Seniors on the Move.” “I have a great resource for almost anything a client would need,” Ivins said. “We work with people who can walk through everything with our clients very patiently. Patience is very important when working with older adults.” Her team at Movers Real Estate works with vendors to provide all the services a downsizing client would need – from home repairs to staging, cleaning, estate sales, legal matters, sorting, packing, and moving. “Most people don’t know what to do with their ‘stuff.’ They want to keep it all, but they just can’t keep everything as they downsize and move into a smaller space,” Ivins said. “I take them from whatever position they are in and am able to coordinate with my trusted partners.” One of those partners is Shelley Chappell, owner of Clutter Free, which offers cleaning and organizing. Shelley states, “Becky and her team are so wonderful and pleasant to work with. I have the utmost admiration for them. They are fast, they are effective, and they care. They treat their business partners like family.” Ivins began selling real estate in 1977. In 1979, she started her own brokerage, Movers Real Estate. One of a very few who have earned the Certified Senior Housing Professional designation, she is active in coaching other real estate agents. Since 2006, Ivins has hosted a live radio talk show, Oklahoma Real Estate On The Move, on KTOK News Radio 1000 every Saturday morning at 8:05 a.m. Ivins has been endorsed by national figures Barbara Corcoran (of the TV show “Shark Tank”), Dave Ramsey, Glenn Beck, and Sean Hannity.

GUIDEPOST BUSINESS TO BUSINESS SECTION

THE ROLE OF

COMMUNAL DINING IN REBUILDING SENIOR LIVING Operators of senior living communities are leveraging some creative new sales strategies to attract residents. There is an underutilized and often powerful tool many communities have: their dining program. The consistency in which a sales team works with prospective residents and their families during the sales process, correlates directly in their ability to convert leads into residents. Hospitality company, Cura Hospitality, manages dining packages for several continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs), including Harbor Retirement Associates (HRA), LivGenerations, and Marquis at Harbor. The provider demonstrates how creative culinary programs like meal kits, dining concierges, scratch cooking , and unique menus is a competitive way to attract residents.

Bringing dining back into focus As the Covid-19 case count grew and operators converted to in-room dining or programs with no communal dining, communal dining took a back seat to health care, safety, and security last year. According to Christopher Thompson, vice president of hospitality at HRA, prospective residents are becoming more interested in dining now that many communities are loosening some of those restrictions. Now that communal meals are coming back, many residents are not concerned about amenities, but they are concerned with order and sanitation. General Manager of Cura Hospitality Barbara Ferguson agreed and said, “that people ask very pointed questions about safety and connection when eating out”. Operators should remember that consumers still care about dining. Understanding their loved ones’ concerns about communal dining during the Pandemic period can help convince them to move their families into the community and boost occupancy.

Maximizing dining

occupancy

through

the

Earlier this year, states eased restrictions on communal dining across the United States, allowing many senior living providers to remove restrictions quickly. Concerning dining restrictions, HRA, LivGenerations, and Cura Hospitality are back to normal or very near normal.

36

Each company has also adopted new strategies for using its dining programs as a census builder. The operator’s dining rooms aren’t open to guests outside the community, but Baldwin has found other ways to introduce prospects to LivGenerations. In the community’s model apartments, residents on tour can enjoy a meal and then go home with a to-go meal. Besides the communities in Phoenix, Arizona, LivGenerations also has new communities in Ahwatukee – a complex with a full restaurant. A new restaurant operator opened this April to serve residents with outside guests. In response to the pandemic, Cura Hospitality assembles meal kits for its residents to cook in their rooms during their stay. Residents raved about the meal kits, and eventually, the company filmed a cooking demonstration in a model apartment using the community’s head chef as the star. An HRA cooking demonstration broadcast on Facebook Live last April similarly showcased its culinary program. A three-course meal is also provided to prospective residents. As part of the sales process, HRA will arrange for prospects to meet with the kitchen’s head or sous chef after touring the community. In the future, Baldwin said LivGenerations would convert its dining operations into a “hospitality model.” It is more complicated to provide quality care now than before COVID because of all the new regulations and infection control policies.

Taking advantage of sales and marketing Each company works closely with the sales and marketing teams to maximize the benefits of their dining programs. With the construction of LivGenerations Mayo Blvd, an upcoming community in Phoenix, Arizona, the company has constructed a replica dining room inside the sales center so that prospective residents can sample the community’s cuisine. Thompson says that when prospects visit HRA communities, the menus are tailored to meet the needs of people from different markets across the country. For example, The residents of one community wanted breakfast all day long. To grow your business in the senior industry, Create a free profile on Senior GuidePost. Precision therapy. Passionate care. Oklahoma Proton Center in Oklahoma City. Oklahoma Proton Center has been a leader in proton therapy for ten years. The facility has treated 3,000 cancer patients from 38 states and 15 countries since opening in August of 2009. It is one of just 32 cancer centers in the country offering cutting edge proton therapy. Proton Therapy is used at the top cancer centers in the United States to treat a variety of diagnoses including breast, lung, head and neck, prostate, brain, liver, esophageal, pediatric, and other cancers. Nearly 200,000 patients have been successfully treated worldwide with proton therapy. With proton therapy doctors are able to deliver more targeted radiation precisely to the cancer while reducing or eliminating radiation exposure to healthy tissue and organs. As a result, patients treated with proton therapy often experience fewer side effects during and after treatment compared with those receiving other forms of radiation treatment. These benefits have been well documented in studies coming out of the country’s leading cancer centers. Examples include:

• 6% increase in overall survival for intermediate risk prostate cancer patients • 50% less bowel problems for prostate cancer patients • 58% reduction in Grade 3+ (severe) side effects for patients receiving combined chemotherapy and radiation treatment

• 32% increase in overall survival at 3 years for lung cancer patients • 58% reduction in lung complications for esophageal cancer patients

I chose proton therapy because I knew it was the best option to protect my heart during radiation treatment

It's All About PETS and the People They Own ... ! ®

Dr. Weiss with some of her feathered and furry friends

By Dr. Kimberly Weiss

M

any of us live on a fixed budget, and money doesn’t go as far as it used to. But our pets are family, and when they get sick we want to take care of them. Sometimes in our rush to help, we allow ourselves to be talked into expenses that aren’t really necessary and don’t address the problem. When your feathered or furry friend gets sick, you may feel the need to get them to a veterinarian NOW. Your pet may have an urgent problem, but there’s always time to take a breath or two and just ask yourself the question: “Is it really urgent, or can it wait until morning?” This is where having a relationship with your local veterinarian is crucial. Your local veterinarian knows your pet and can help you decide if you’re having an emergency or if it’s something that can wait for a day. I’ve seen too many well-meaning people immediately take their sick pet to an emergency corporate veterinarian, spend thousands of dollars, and have nothing left for long-term treatment. Family veterinarians are usually less expensive. We value long-term relationships and are willing and able to work with you to provide testing and treatment options that will fit within a budget. We know your pet and her history, so we can tell which symptoms are actually urgent and which are not. Since we are community-based, we know what diseases are local and won’t waste your money on unnecessary tests. We and our staff know you and your pet. We appreciate your business and strive to provide a pleasant, warm and inviting atmosphere and good value for your money. As in many other parts of business, large corporations are pushing local, family veterinarians out of practice. They can afford to spend more on advertising or afford to have clinics in expensive malls. I would ask you to consider your local family veterinary practice.

A Story of Rescue, But Who Rescued Whom?

By Susan L. Slater

Dennis Helm, owner of Smooth Finish Roofing & Construction, has been a pet lover for as long as he can remember. Dennis remembers “rescuing” a stray dog when he was a young boy, but he says, “this dog rescued me for 16 years!” His older brother found a stray dog that the boys’ struggling mom was against taking in. But they kept pleading their case and immediately named the female dog Snoopy. When Dennis’s mom realized that Snoopy was smart and welltrained, she finally gave in. Dennis had a sometimes-difficult childhood and Snoopy was a much needed companion. Dennis says he talked to her like a best friend. Snoopy followed Dennis to school every day and would always wait outside the school doors for him. She slept in bed with Dennis every night and was always there when he was having a bad day. They were inseparable. Dennis remembers the day that Snoopy got lost—January 4, 1969. They’d taken Snoopy, pregnant at the time, to their grandparents’ house for a birthday party. When they realized she had gotten out and lost, Dennis was devastated. They immediately called the Daily Oklahoman to run a small ad in the Lost and Found section. The paper sympathized with the family who had lost their beloved

pregnant dog and ran a half-page article to help find Snoopy. After the article ran, someone called the paper, and Dennis got Snoopy back. Two days later, Snoopy had 16 healthy puppies! Giving Back to Pets in Need Because of his love for pets, Dennis will donate $25-$75 to the Pet Food Pantry of Oklahoma City for each roofing job that he does for readers of the Oklahoma Senior Journal. The Pet Food Pantry is an organization that provides pet food to low-income seniors, veterans, and the homeless. Smooth Finish Roofing & Construction has been serving Oklahoma customers since 1987. They take pride in their work, have built a solid reputation, and specialize in helping seniors (see article page 19). Give Dennis a call at (405-923-5127) for a free roofing inspection, consultation, or estimate after our multiple Oklahoma storm seasons. He can help you and the Pet Food Pantry pets at the same time!

BF FARMS 5 Generations Since 1921 The Benkendorf Family BF Farms LLC, also known as Benkendorf Family Farms, is located in the very fertile Breckinridge Flats just east of Enid, Oklahoma. Before statehood, buffalo roamed on this fertile ground, as is evidenced by buffalo “wallers” still present in many areas today. Old timers claimed the buffalo preferred this area because of the strong grasses provided by this fertile soil. The Benkendorf Family is taking advantage of this fertile soil, and the grasses it produces, by raising 100% grass-fed/grass-finished beef and lamb. Because of the superior quality of the grasses, the flavor and texture of the meats are unequaled. No antibiotics, no steroids, no added hormones, no GMOs, and no grain are ever given to the beef and lamb that graze this land. As a family, we take pride in being able to offer a very clean and flavorful product for our customers. Visit our website and meet Kamie, a 4th-generation member of our family and general manager of BF Farms. Her passion for raising animals in this stressfree environment is evident. We want to thank all our customers for putting faith in BF Farms to feed their families and recommending us to their extended family and friends.
