Know the Pros & Cons of Different Pool Sanitizers


One of the essential steps in maintaining a perfect swimming pool is to properly sanitize the pool water.


The pool sanitizers are used to kill bacteria and inhibit the growth of viruses, algae and other organic contaminants.


These contaminants, mostly enter the pool water by the means of wind, rain, dust and by everything that comes in contact with the water.


Let us get some idea on the different methods of pool water sanitization along with their pros & cons.


Among all the alternative sanitation methods, chlorine is the most popular chemical used for swimming pool sanitization.


The working mechanism of the chlorine is based on simple chemical reactions which oxidize the bacteria in the water until they are neutralized.


# Pros Chlorine has a long half-life and can be stored for long periods of time. Chlorine has a residual effect as it continues to neutralize the water long afterward.


# Cons There are byproducts of chlorine like the chloramines, which cause skin and eye irritation. Chlorine dissipates very quickly means the pool water must be regularly tested.


Pool sanitization by Bromine is quite similar to that of chlorine and the only difference is due to their byproducts.


When bromine reacts with the contaminants in the water, bromamine is formed, which is more effective as they retain the sanitizing characteristics of bromine.


# Pros Bromine is more stable than chlorine in warmer temperatures and is used in indoor pools. The smell of bromine is also less pungent than that of chlorine.


# Cons In comparison, bromine is a weaker oxidizer than chlorine. It costs more to use bromine as the sanitizing agent for your pool water.


The ionizers release ions of copper and hard metals into the swimming pool water which kill the microorganisms.


Generally, there are two forms of ionizers: 1. An electric ionizer which utilizes electricity to charge the metals until they release ions 2. A mineral cartridge ionizer which utilizes the water flow through a mineral packet to release the metal ions.


# Pros The ionizers are both durable and inexpensive to maintain. The metal ions produced by ionizers do not have any adverse effect on the pool equipment.


# Cons The ionizers do not oxidize the swimming pool water. The metal ions are slow-acting agents and take more time to neutralize the contaminants.


Ozone is an unstable and organic gas which is formed due to the collision between the free oxygen atoms and oxygen molecules.


It is mainly manufactured by subjecting the oxygen molecules to high-voltage ionization process or to ultraviolet radiation.


# Pros Ozone is considered a hundred times stronger oxidizer than chlorine. Ozone does not affect the pH levels of the pool water and hence, reduces the chemical usage.


# Cons It is less effective as it cannot eliminate all the contaminants in your swimming pool. It can be very harmful if the concentration is on the higher side.


There are many options for sanitizing your pool water. But, we often struggle to select a suitable sanitation system for our swimming pools.
