Speak Out News
Welcome to Speak Out News... Welcome to 2020! Thank you to all of you who came along to our Big Night Out. You told us what a wonderful evening you had... and what a great place. I’m sure we will be back at the Musical Museum with another Big Night Out soon! If you were there... you will have heard our good news from the National Lottery Community Fund. They are continuing to fund us for another 4 years to the sum of £472,692. We will be refreshing some of our projects and changing things around. But it’s all exciting stuff! Congratulations to our very own Sarfraz Kherdin who has been promoted. He is going to be the new Co-ordinator for our refreshed project “Campaigns and Advice” ably supported by Jaspaul Vilkhu. We wish the best of luck to Pat Azille who has decided to move on to new adventures. Read on for lots of news, activities and outings for you to get involve with from January 2020.

Speak Out News Home & Fire Safety
Keeping Safe News Fire! What would you do if there was a fire? It is one of the things that all of us must learn what to do. After running the ‘Keeping Safe’ course, a lot of you told us that you wanted to learn more about fire safety - and being safe at home. So, we ran our first ever ‘Fire Safety and Home Safety’ course at Bell Road Methodist Church right in the centre of Hounslow. We had 7 students who were all keen to learn more about this.
For info on our range of “Safe” courses... or the Heathrow Employment course... Please Ring Steve 07904 494 677
We learnt how to keep our homes safe and secure and how to get help if we needed it at any time. We watched a film made by an organisation like Speak Out. It showed us how to cook safely in our kitchen & not leave pots and pans burning on the stove. Fire spreads quickly. All of us learnt three things to do in a fire: Get Out Stay Out Call 999 Would you do the same? Over the next few weeks we hope to visit a Fire Station and talk to firefighters as well. Watch this space for news!
Hoping to get a job at Heathrow Airport? Oh boy - another aeroplane going over! They can be a bit noisy! But - one of the good things about living near the Airport is there are lots of jobs to be had there. We have been speaking to Speak Out members who are keen to try to get a job at the Airport. You don’t have to be able to fly a plane! There are lots of jobs in shops and cafes there and it looks like a great place to work. Rebecca and Steve will be running a course over 5 mornings in January and February. Students will then be helped by staff at Heathrow when they look for a job. Our course will also include a trip to one of the Heathrow Terminals. Daniel will be coming on this course and here he is pictured. Good luck Daniel!

Campaigns & Advice Autumn to CCP members means Hate Crime week, a time when awareness is raised about issues faced by Learning Disabled adults. CCP members wanted to raise awareness about abuse of authority. The wrongful treatment of vulnerable adults by someone who supports or helps them. This could be someone who is paid support or a Family member who helps. If you or anyone you know is experiencing issues like this, please seek help and Speak Out. Thank you to Sharon Till from TfL and PC Neil MacKay from Chiswick Neighbourhood Team for coming to October’s CCP meeting. They spoke to members about new services and safety on the transport system. They shall be returning in the New Year, the CCP Team shall tell you when, so please do come along. Valuing People Big Day Network Staying with Transport, Jaspaul, Sarfraz and Punam represented the CCP at TfL’s Valuing People Big Day Network meeting. Bus Driver Training, customer experience awareness and TfL’s Travelbot - a free service available on Facebook messenger which answers customers’ transport queries. Were among many of the subjects which were discussed as well as many other issues which affect our members. Hounslow Borough of Culture Bid A large group of Hounslow Councillors, charitable organisations, services and residents boarded a double decker bus and went to City Hall. They went to hand in a bid, asking for Hounslow to be chosen as London’s Borough of Culture 2021. Jaspaul and Vaishali went to represent Speak Out. Make your own changes, come and join us!
Speak Out News Drama 3-5pm Thursdays Line Dancing 10am-12pm Fridays at Hounslow Arts Centre.
Drama and Movement Our Creating Drama Together & Line Dancing groups worked hard to produce some great performances for Speak Out’s Big Night Out. We asked some of the members involved what they thought of the evening: Andy told us: “I travelled all the way back to Hounslow from Up North where I live to be able to perform, I was so nervous, but I didn’t need to be the audience were amazing & cheered us loudly!” Anupa said: “It was amazing to perform to a big audience I felt so alive.” Stan said: “I have learnt a lot of discipline in drama and getting ready for a performance. It was very exciting performing on the big stage. I felt very at home & the cake was delicious!” Younis said: “I have never done drama before, I came to singing and then wanted to be in the drama too. I felt excited on stage.” Jatinder said: “I didn’t feel any pressure at the show I think this is because we have rehearsed so well and our cast has such incredible chemistry I thought I would have been more nervous.”
For more information Please Ring Terri 07949 075 603
Deena said: “The stage was huge but we managed to stretch the sea as wide as we could! I felt very proud to be part of such a hard working cast.” Speak Out Ushering Meanwhile our 2019-2020 volunteer Ushering project has started working with Hounslow Arts Centre.
