Park District Board

Bill Wright

Rick Brogan

President

Vice President

The days are getting shorter and the anticipation of the holidays and the cold winter ahead are on our minds. It is a fun time of year with much joy, anticipation, reflection, and some stress. With that in mind, Streamwood Park District has a lot of great programs for adults and children to help you through the winter. Whether it is the Santa Storytime Express, Breakfast with Santa, fitness classes, and other offerings, we have something going on for everybody. We also have many adult programs to help keep you fit and to help you battle the stress of the season and those extra calories. Please look into our seasonal program guide to check out our winter offerings. Several specials will also be going on, so please check us out online at www.SPDCARES.com to look at programs that interest you. We are also excited to announce we have a new Executive Director for the Streamwood Park District. Please join us in welcoming Jeff Janda. Jeff comes from the Berwyn Park District, where he served 30 years, including the last 20 as their Executive Director. Jeff brings a wealth of experience and a new and exciting vision to SPD. I am sure many of you will get to meet him and will enjoy getting to know him.

We also would be remiss if we didn’t thank Larry Piekarz, our Interim Executive Director. Larry did a great job for us as we searched for a new permanent Executive Director. Larry brought many positive changes and a fresh spirit throughout our organization. We are very grateful for his service. Finally, we all want to congratulate Commissioners Adriana Armstrong and Rick Brogan on their 10 year anniversary serving on the Streamwood Park Board. Both have made outstanding contributions to SPD. Thank you both for your efforts in your respective decade of service.

Community Center

The benefits of youth sports promote healthy lifstyles and safe environments for stronger neighborhoods and more wholesome communities. A primary goal in youth sports is to encourage active participation by all youth in fun and healthy physical activities according to their age, interests, and abilities. Research shows that young people who participate in athletics get better grades, devote hours to studying, think more about their future, aspire to attend and graduate from college, and have lower suspension and expulsion rates. It is reported that players reported lower rates of unhealthy behavior such as drinking and smoking, and are less likely to be overweight or become obese. Other studies back up these reports that there is evidence-based research to show that youth who play sports get better grades, plan to attend college, and are more community minded. Starfish Aquatics is a nationally recognized swim instruction curriculum developed by the Starfish Aquatics Institute (SAI). The Starfish Swimming curriculum is designed for students ages 6 months to adult. Benchmarks are established at each stage in the program that combine both swimming and safety skills. Streamwood Park District is an independent authorized provider of Starfish Swimming. Learn more about SAI at www.StarfishAquatics.org.

swim lessons

startots® Ages 3 - 5 year olds

starbabies® Ages 3 months - 3 year olds The purpose of this course is to develop children’s comfort level in the water while training adults who accompany them in the water safety and drowning prevention. The class does not teach children to become accomplished swimmers or to survive in the water; it does provide a confidence-building, fun, and loving experience. No class 3/23-3/29.

Children in this course will develop a high comfort level in the water and a readiness to swim. For those children who are developmentally ready this course will teach functional swim skills. This class teaches swimming through creative fun activities in the water. Students work toward achieving the five benchmarks competencies at their own pace in a small-group setting. WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT OUR SWIM LESSONS

Every Saturday morning Starfish School is all they want to do. They love their swim instructors! My son took two sessions of this class. He loved both instructors. It gave him the confidence to join a swim team.

Very happy with the program! Perfect for getting used to the water, and affordable too! Will recommend!

Such a great place! My daughters love their swim classes. They want to come all the time. Their swim instructor is doing a great job!

Program Errors Due to the large amount of information available in the Streamwood Park District program guide, errors and changes before or after publication may occur. We apologize for any errors in this program guide, and will advise you of any changes as quickly as possible. We will also attempt to keep the information online as current as possible. Thank you for your patience and understanding when these situations arise. Waivers The Streamwood Park District is committed to conducting its recreation programs and activities in a safe manner and holds the safety of participants in high regard. The Streamwood Park District continually strives to reduce such risks and insists that all participants and parents/guardians of minors registering for programs/activities must recognize that there is an inherent risk of injury when choosing to participate. When registering for any program, class, or event, all registered participants must sign the waiver at the bottom of the registration form, or by parents/guardians 18 and older of under-age participants.

All transfer requests will be honored if there are openings in the class requesting to be transferred to and the participant is the appropriate age for the program. If additional payment is due, this must be made at the time of the transfer request. Refunds To request a refund on a program, a Refund Request Form must be completed and submitted to Registration. Administrative approval must be received before a refund will be issued. All refunds issued which are not a result of a Park District cancellation will be assessed a service charge. The service charge for programs with fees of $10 or more will be $5; programs with fees less than $10 will be charged 50% of the program fee. 1. A full refund will be given when the Park District cancels a trip/program or a refund is requested as a result of being placed on a waiting list. 2. A refund minus a service charge will be given when a refund request is received a minimum of four days before the start of the registered program. 3. A prorated refund with a service charge may be granted when a refund request is received with less than four days before the start or after the start of the registered program and the reason is approved. Documentation may be requested with your refund request in order to be approved. The prorated refund will be based on the date the request was received, not the last attended class. A refund will not be approved if the session is more than half over. No refunds will be issued for individually missed or forgotten classes. 4. No refund requests will be granted that are made more than two (2) business days after a one day program or special event. 5. Refunds for trips will not be given unless one of the following occurs: A. Park District cancels the trip. B. A replacement is found to take the trip. 6. Deposits for certain programs and trips are identified as non-refundable and therefore the refund policy does not apply. 7. The cost of purchased individual supplies or equipment such as t-shirts, uniforms, trophies, costumes, etc. will be deducted from your refund. No reimbursements will be given for required equipment or supply purchases made by the participant or parent. 8. Please allow 4-6 weeks for your refund to be processed. If originally paid by check or cash, a check will be mailed to you. If paid by credit card, we must credit the card with which payment was made. 9. Any programs with special policies void the preceding.

Class Cancellations Every effort is made to avoid canceling classes. However, a minimum number of participants must be registered. Notification of class cancellation may be made with as little as 24-hour notice. In cases where a program is canceled, you will be notified prior to the start of the program and a full refund will be issued.

Such a Behavior Contract will be personalized to the circumstances and the participant, and will include specific expectations and consequences for failure to meet such expectations, including possible suspension and/or termination from program participation. Facilities All facility participants are expected to follow the rules of the facilities. Specialty areas of the facilities (example: fitness center and pools) have posted signs stating special rules specific to that area. Disregard or abuse of facility rules may result in removal by staff or police from the facility for a designated length of time or permanently. Observers Observers of programs are also expected to behave appropriately. Parents, friends, and any observers are held to the same standards of behavior as participants. If inappropriate behavior of a program observer is reported to or observed by a staff person, the observer will be asked to leave by the staff or police, if necessary. It is a vision of the Streamwood Park District to provide safe and wholesome programs in well-maintained facilities for our residents and guests. Rules must be followed and policies such as this must be established to protect this vision for all involved. Our goal is not to remove patrons from programs or facilities, but to work together with participants and/or parents/guardians to the best of our ability to correct or deal with a problem. The Streamwood Park District asks for your cooperation in behaving appropriately and also teaching your children the importance of appropriate behavior and following rules. adopted 11/09/00; revised/reviewed 06/20/08; 07/10/12
