introduction 9

2.6 environmental recycling Never dispose of the device with domestic waste. Ask your Town Council about how to dispose of it in an environmentally friendly way. The cardboard box, plastic packaging and reader parts should be recycled in accordance with prevailing recycling regulations in Spain. Always adhere to prevailing regulations. Those who fail to do so may be fined or prosecuted according to the law. The crossed out garbage can that appears on the device means that when it has reached the end of its useful life, it should be taken to a special waste disposal centre and treated separately to general urban waste. CAUTION! Earphone volume: Using earphones at high volumes can cause permanent hearing loss. It you get used to higher volumes, this could seem normal, but it could damage your hearing capacity. Adjust the volume of your player to an appropriate level. If you hear a beep, turn the volume down or stop using the reader. Activities: It is recommended that you do not use the reader whilst performing activities that require your hearing and attention since the reader isolates you from external sounds. Connectors and ports: Do not repeatedly try to plug a connector into a port if the connection between the connector and port does not occur immediately, as they probably do not match. Make sure that the shape of the connector matches the port and that you have put it in the right way. operation

5 e-book (book reading) The reader can display text files with EPUB, FB2, TXT, PDF, HTML formats. It also allows displaying EPUB and PDF e-books with ADOBE DRM protection. To do so, you should have previously copied the text files in the reader's memory. When you turn the reader on, you will see all the e-books stored in the reader's internal memory or in the memory card. Select the file you want to play moving around them using the “Track ball” (4). If the file you want to open is not displayed this might be due to there being more than one page of files, and you will therefore have to go to the next page, moving the “Track ball” (4) to the right and the list of files on page two will appear. You can check the page number where you are situated looking at the indication that appears in the middle of the bottom part of the display (for example: 1/10 means that you are on the first page of the 10 available ones). When you are inside the file, depending on its type, you can carry out different actions and configurations, according to the following sections.

N

NOTE If you have other e-book file formats that you want to read with the reader, but which are not the supported formats (EPUB, FB2, TXT, PDF) you can use a format converter. Consult section 4.4 Format converter for more information. It is advisable not to load files that are not compatible with the device. Every time you open a book with FDF, EPUB or FB2 format, a hidden .cov file is generated in your device's memory. Delete the .cov files from the computer now and then to free space in the memory.

E-book 17

5.1 EPUB and FB2 format The EPUB and FB2 formats are formats used by some electronic books so that the content is perfectly adapted to the readers' displays. These formats do not structure a document like a PDF can do. They automatically adjust the page on the reader that has to show it on the display regardless of whatever it is. Not only that, we can ask it to enlarge the font, for example, and the reader will then just use the largest letter and adjust the entire document, which will automatically have more pages, while the book index and other marks will continue to direct us to the different chapters and references although these are now on a different page. This type of text treatment also makes automatic conversion to other formats much easier.

N

NOTE Bear in mind that the content of most of the formats (EPUB, FB2, TXT, etc.) should be flat text, as the reader does not allow complex text configurations or certain page make ups, and only text without format, only characters should be processed. Text files are made up of thousands of characters, and it is normal for the device to take a minute to load some of them as it has to convert them and adjust them to the display. It will all depend on the size of the file. We recommend not using files larger than 5MB. The bottom bookmark of the text file you are reading might not correspond to the real file pagination. This will depend on the page makeup of the original file.

When you have the file open: - To go to the next page move the “Track ball” (4) to the right, and to return to the previous page, move it to the left. - You have two options to display bigger text, you can increase the letter size (in most PDF, the letter size cannot be changed) or you can zoom in: press the (6) key. With the “Track ball” (4) select the letter size you want or select the “Zoom in” option to zoom in on the text. If you select the zoom option you should then select the percentage of increase you require and confirm

18

E-book

pressing the “Track ball” (4). When you use the zoom option, some arrows will appear above the text, move around it using the “Track ball” (4). - To change the direction of the text, press the the “Track ball” (4) to confirm.

(3) key, select the Rotate option and press

5.2 PDF format The PDF (Portable Document Format) format is a format developed by the company Adobe Systems. It is a page formatted format, in other worlds, that structures a document rigidly, with a given size of page and other elements that cannot be changed later on, such as the text size, for example, as it is as if the text is a part of the page and which cannot be extracted. Therefore, if the document in PDF does not have a page size adapted to the reader's display, we cannot read it easily, and the Zoom in function is limited. You cannot change the colour of the font either, as you can with FB2 and EPUB files. To counteract this problem with PDF files, the reader can also open files with EPUB / FB2 / TXT formats. You can use the “Calibre” format converter that you can find in our web site (http:// spcinternet.com/informacion-producto/SPCinternet-5700/) to convert it to one of them.

N

NOTE PDF files are made up of thousands of characters and images, and it is normal for the device to take a minute to load some of them as it has to convert them and adjust them to the display. It will all depend on the size of the file. We recommend not using files larger than 5MB.

E-book 19

5.3 EPUB / PDF books with ADOBE DRM protection In addition to the formats described in the previous sections, the reader can read books with EPUB and PDF format with ADOBE DRM protection. DRM “Digital Rights Management is a anti-piracy technology used by authors to control access and copying of their works. In particular, DRM controls the way people install, listen to, see and copy the files, limiting the owner of the file to share the file, copy it, etc. DRM technology makes copying a file from one device to another almost impossible. It also makes it impossible to save files you have paid for and cut, copy, paste, highlight, etc. the file's contents. To be able to read EPUB or PDF books with ADOBE DRM protection, you have to transfer the files via the computer using the ADOBE DIGITAL EDITIONS programme as explained below. Additional information: There are thousands of free books in Internet. Apart from these, there are many more that can be bought (the ones with DRM protection). Both free and bought books are compatible with this reader.

Download Adobe Digital Editions To be able to transfer files to the reader, install the Adobe Digital Editions programme on the computer. To do so: - Download the DIGITAL EDITIONS programme from the Internet from the ADOBE web site. Write the www.adobe.com/es/products/digitaleditions web site on your browser and click START to download the programme following the steps shown on the display. - During the installation, the programme will start and ask you to authorise the device. It is important to carry out this step correctly as if not you might have problems later on when copying files. To authorise the device (computer) you have to enter your e-mail address and a password (TO DO SO YOU WILL HAVE TO REGISTER IN ADOBE).

20

E-book

- Bear in mind that if you connect the player to the PC and there is a card in the player's card reader, the Adobe Digital Editions programme will first detect the card and then the computer. The card will be treated as if it were another device. If you download a book onto the card using Adobe Digital Editions, you will also have to authorise the player as if not, you will not be able to read the books you have downloaded onto the card with the player. After authorising the card, it will be specific and untransferable for that device. Books downloaded onto that card can only be read from the player in which the card was inserted when you carried out the download. - Follow the steps until the installation has been finished.

N

NOTE The e-mail address should be the same as the one you use to download books with Adobe DRM protection in the future. A computer can only register one account. If you want to register more than one account, you have to change user to make a new registration or change computer. Each account can only activate up to 6 devices. If you format your device using the PC or carry out a "Default values", bear in mind that it will be considered as a new device. You should delete the files instead of formatting the device. If you have any problems with your account, contact Adobe on its web site to resolve it.

E-book 21

Transfer files to the reader After installing Adobe Digital Editions, you can now download and copy EPUB / PDF files with DRM protection onto this reader. To do so: - Download the selected book onto your computer. The Adobe Digital Editions programme will open automatically and download the file (if not, a window to save or open the file will appear. Press the open option to download the file).

N

NOTE Files downloaded via Digital Editions will be saved in the MY DOCUMENTS / MY DIGITAL EDITIONS folder in the computer.

- The file will appear in the Digital Editions programme. Click on the LIBRARY option the list of files.

to see

- Turn the reader on pressing the Power key. When you see the main menu, connect the reader to the computer in the same way as explained in previous sections.

N

NOTE You have to wait until the synchronisation between the programme and the reader of the entire content of the internal memory finishes.

- The programme will show a display to authorise the connected device. Select the option AUTHORISE DEVICE and then the FINISHED option.

22

E-book

N

NOTE You can activate the device with other accounts. Each bought book is linked to the account used to download it. When you activate the device with another account you can only reproduce the files linked to that account.

- You can see the reader's storage drive (U-Disk) on the left-hand side of Digital Editions. To copy the file, just drag the downloaded file to the reader's storage drive. - Disconnect the reader in the same way as explained above. You can read the DRM file from the reader's DIGITAL EDITIONS folder.

N

NOTE You can only copy PDF and EPUB files into the reader's DIGITAL EDITIONS folder. It is also the folder used for interacting with the Adobe Digital Editions (DRM) programme.

5.4 format converter There are several readers and format converters in Internet you can use to display and convert files with other formats with a computer, to convert them to a format the reader can recognise. A very good programme for doing this is CALIBRE, developed by the company Kovid Goyal. This programme comes in several languages and is free, and allows dozens of input and conversion formats. You can download Calibre from our web site: http://spcinternet.com/informacion-producto/ SPCinternet-5700/ or from the manufacturer's web site http://calibre-ebook.com/download, select the operating system you use, and install it like any other programme. Once installed, you should open the programme, and from the button should select the files to convert, or even the file that contains these files. Then to convert the files, press the format and its configuration.

“Add books” you

NOTE It is advisable not to load files that are not compatible with the device. To play other types of files not supported by the reader, you will have to convert the file type beforehand, using one of the dozens of software currently available for this purpose. The player may have problems playing some videos from the memory card. In this case, copy the videos to the device's internal memory and try to play them again. If you want, you can format the card with the NTFS file system, and in this way you can copy files larger than 4GB which is precisely the limitation we have with the FAT32 file system. The Windows 7 operating system offers the possibility of formatting in NTFS, and to do so, select the card drive, right click and select the "Format" option. Choose the NTFS file system. Nevertheless, bear in mind that if the card is formatted in NTFS, you cannot use the functions: copy, paste and delete.
