HOMECOMING BY ELLEN HEALY ! Trust me, I was doubtful too. I was sure that this year, the band would be boo-ed of that stage, forcing Mr. Ashbrook to switch over to someone’s Ipod. I was so sure that this was a bad idea. High school students not grinding? It sounded like a joke. The truth is that no matter what music is playing, whether teachers are telling students to stop grinding or whether the music is changed from a DJ to a band, students will find a way to grind. With any repetitive rhythm and heavy beat kids will grind. That’s just the way it is. What I have noticed from other dances is the formation we dance in. There’s a huge group in the middle that forms a huge circle of couples grinding, the next ring of couple seems to be comprised of those less comfortable with grinding but dance “face to face with some space.” The final ring is full of kids who watch, who are either to reluctant to dance in front of their peers or students who just aren’t into dancing. It might just be me, but I personally felt that more kids were dancing “face to face with some space” this time and not even thinking about it. I thought the band was a blast. I was a different experience that what we are all used to and I really had an amazing time. ! The band not only played Rock, like a lot of students expected , but they played music for everyone’s taste. Playing Seniors freak out classic rock, modern hip-hop, slow songs and alternative; it was a to Footloose! perfect mix to play for everybody. For example, all the ladies got their fill of Katy Perry, kids who were upset with all the old-school rock got some Black Eyed Peas, and for the folks who enjoy the old stuff, they got AC/DC and songs like “Let Me Go Out” (which is one of my favorites.) People who didn’t like any of that enjoyed the shuffle mix when the band took a break. The was a great variety which was surprising and fun. ! When I asked a student for their opinion of the band I got the following feedback: “I really enjoyed the band. It was ten times better than having a DJ, because it wasn’t all rap. It would be cool to continue on with it. I’ pretty sure everyone had a great time, whether or not they were disappointed because they couldn’t grind or whether they just don’t like rock and roll. I had a blast.” Another student said “I hated having a band. It was really lame to have a band instead of a DJ. Everyone wanted a DJ, I mean come on!” I asked him whether he disliked it because there was no grinding and he admitted this was a big factor. CONT pg. 7 PAPER TWEET: BY JAKE BARRETT Featuring Coach Fiegel. Q: What did you think of the fireworks during the band’s halftime performance at the Homecoming game?

!

A: I wouldn’t touch that question with a ten foot pole.

VOLUME 4 ISSUE 3! LEGEND of the GUARDIANS: The Owls of Ga’Hoole.

OCTOBER 8, 2010

!

By Alex Waldeck ! The movie based on the series of the Guardians of Ga’hoole by Kathryn Lasky was recently released into theaters. From a little kids perspective this film was adorable and full of adventure but this is the movie review from a teenager’s perspective. Even though we are all teens this movie is recommended, especially for girls. For the first time since Avatar, the 3D effects were actually noticeable. There is a time when Soren, the main character, was flying through a spiral of rain during a storm and every individual droplet of rain was visible. !

The plot was good, the characters were well developed portraits and it followed the book perfectly. If you are still on the fence about seeing this work of art then I have one last trick up my sleeve! The FIGHT SCENCE! At the end of the movie there is a great battle between the good Guardians and the bad Pure Ones. I won’t ruin the ending, but let’s just say that this scene alone is worth seeing the whole movie. !

MRS. REPP By Riley Kemmer

! Lolita Self Repp might not be new to the scene this year at WCS, but she is teaching a different curriculum. Two grades up from last year, she teaches her new fast paced government class to the much more mature, but not quite as fun, junior and senior classes. ! When Mrs. Repp isn’t enjoying her students in the class room, she can sometimes be found free falling from 11,000 feet, or dancing around her room reciting poetry. Although it might seem that she is all fun and games, Mrs. Repp also has a dark side. At one point in her teaching career she gave five detentions at one time. So keep this in mind, juniors, in case you were thinking about talking out of turn! ! Mrs. Repp can relate to most of the most of the kids here at Collegiate, as she was born and raised in Wichita where she attended Southeast High School. She received s master;s degree in both government and history from Newman University. After graduating, Mrs. Repp married and enjoyed teaching at numerous schools such as Andover and Maize. ! Mrs. Repp also has a burning passion to travel. All throughout her life she has traveled and continues to do so; very soon she is launching a week long expedition to China. Anyone, or almost anyone, can take this trip with her. And what could be more fun than spending a week in China with Mrs. Repp listening to her trying to pronounce Chinese words?

CONT from p.3 He then told me “to some people that’s the only way to dance.” This is a pretty limiting perspective (mother/son dance, anyone?). ! Everyone can dance, but people choose not to due to nerves, being embarrassed or the fear of looking like an idiot. Well, most kids feel this way. When I go to dances I make it know that I’m nota girl on the dance team but I’m here to enjoy myself. Screw it, I’ll dance the way I want. Trust me it is more fun and less stressful than you imagine. ! In conclusion to the band “Lucky People” was both praised by many and disliked by a few, but the experience was new and different and that is what made this year’s homecoming more exciting than other dances.
