The Spartan Muse Man Kidnapped In Pakistan Last year a 70-year-old U.S. citizen was kidnapped in Pakistan, and has now made an emotional plea to President Barak Obama, asking him to meet al Qaeda’s demands in order to save his life, according to a video, which was less than three minutes long, released on several Islamist websites on Sunday, May 6th. In the video Warren Weinstein said "My life is in your hands, Mr. President, if you accept the demands, I live. If you don't accept the demands, then I die." Weinstein, was abducted in August from his home in the city of Lahore. In December, al Qaeda claimed responsibility for his capture. Ayman al-Zawahiri the leader of the terror network, listed eight demands, and if they were met, they would release Weinstein. The demands related to issues in the Middle East, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Somalia. Al Qaeda's demands include the lifting of the blockade on movement of people and trade between Egypt and Gaza; an end to bombing by the United States and its allies in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen, Somalia and Gaza; the release of anyone arrested on charges of belonging to al Qaeda and the Taliban; the release of all prisoners in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and American secret prisons and the closure of Guantanamo and the other prisons; the release of terrorists convicted in the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center; and the release of

relatives of Osama bin Laden. In the video Weinstien said "It is important that you accept these demands and act quickly and don't delay.” He made references to Obama's daughters and to his own children. Weinstein also said that he wanted to let his wife know that he was "fine and well." In August, Weinstein's kidnappers managed to overcome the three security guards tasked with protecting him. As the guards prepared for the meal before the Ramadan fast, three men knocked at the front gate and offered food for the meal -- a traditional practice among Muslims during the holy month of Ramadan, according to the Lahore police. Once the gate was opened, the three men forced their way in, while five others entered the house from the back, tied up the guards and duct-taped their mouths, according to the police. They pistolwhipped the driver and forced him to take them to Weinstein's room, where they hit Weinstein on the head with a pistol and forced him out of the house and into a waiting car, the police said. A police official said in August that three suspects had been arrested in Weinstein's kidnapping. Weinstein was working for J.E. Austin Associates Inc., a consulting firm based in Arlington, Virginia when he was kidnapped. According to U.S officials, the United States will not bargain with Al Qaeda over the life of Weinstein. "We don't make concessions to terrorists," State Department spokesman Mark Toner said when asked whether the United States would meet the demands contained in the video.

The Graduation Project is a project that begins your junior year and continues into your senior year. The project consists of four components: research paper, portfolio, product and oral presentation. Through this project, students learn various, specific skills. It teaches the students to learn time management, confidence in public speaking and problem solving skills. Most students stress and panic about this major grade for their senior year because it takes a lot of time and effort to complete it. Two students were interviewed about the progress of their project and their thoughts about their presentations. Ben Turnmire, a senior at South said his stress comes from making sure him and his mentor do not mess up on presentation night. His product is learning shag dances and choreographing one himself with his mentor. He feels like the product is going to be a hassle for his mentor getting a dance together in time for the big night. Lauren Silvers, also a senior at South was interviewed on her project as well. Her project is on being a nurse anesthetist and she is worried about what to say on presentation night. She is not stressing about the project itself but mainly what to say in that long amount of time. It is very easy to stress about this project! Papers need to be due on their due dates, mentor hours must be completed and the portfolio has to be just right and ready to go. This is a project that should be taken very seriously but at the same time, you should enjoy learning new things about something you would like to do.

The Spartan baseball team participated in the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference Championship last week on Friday and Saturday May 5-6, 2012 at M.S Deal Stadium. Since the Spartans won the overall conference, they received a first round buy, which allowed them to play only two days rather than three. To start off the tournament for the Spartans, on Friday they played against the St. Stephens Indians who had beaten Hibriten on Tuesday to advance to the second round of the tournament. This game was a nail biter as the two teams battled out the whole seven innings, tied at 2-2 going into the bottom of the seventh inning. A passed ball allowed Anthony Rossi to advance home for the win over the Indians 3-2. Garrison Franklin was the winning pitcher for this game, and pitched a complete seven innings. On Saturday, the Spartans played the Hickory Tornadoes who defeated Watauga on Friday, placing them into the championship game against the Spartans. The game had a slow start, but the Spartans quickly picked up the pace as they got their bats

Mother’s Day Mother's Day is always celebrated on the second Sunday in May which falls on May 13th this year. Anna Jarvis of West Virginia originally started the holiday in 1908 to show appreciation to mothers, but it wasn't until 1914 that President Woodrow Wilson made it a national holiday. Mother's Day is one of the most important days of the year for moms. It is a day when moms can sit back and relax while their children and spouses show appreciation for them. Mother's Day gives moms a break from doing all of their normal daily tasks. It is a day to honor your mom and let her know just how much she means to you.

made card. Mother's Day gifts become more creative every year. Some of the popular gifts this year are Edible Arrangements and personalized jewelry. Although many purchase gifts for this special occasion some serve their moms breakfast in bed or simply just do something nice. Mother's Day is celebrated in many ways some spend the day with their mothers while others purchase gifts. Flowers, cards, jewelry, and hand-crafted items are some of the gifts mothers receive. Should Students Pay The Debt? Caldwell County Schools have recently announced that they would like to hire a collection agency to collect the $32,000 owed to schools by students for lunches. The agency would collect a fee of as much as 50% depending on the age of the debt. At the beginning of the year, students receive a Free and Reduced Lunch Application. The requirements are based on how many people are in the family, and what the income is. Per year, for a family of four to qualify for this application, the income must not be over $41,348. If the students don’t turn this form in then they will have to pay for their lunch, and when they fail to pay, that’s where the debt mentioned above comes from.

well County Schools. The student with the largest amount of debt, being $465.57, comes from Happy Valley. The least amount due by student’s is Granite Falls Elementary School is $141.85. The school with the largest debt is West Caldwell High School with a total amount being $3,900.39. We asked Mrs. Powell from the cafeteria what her thoughts were on this topic, she replied with, “They should just pay their lunches, they don’t eat at McDonald’s for free. I would gladly give out free lunch, but no one turns the forms in.” A possibility of why students don’t turn in the application is because they might be embarrassed, or maybe just too lazy.
