LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR Hello Fellow Citizens, I want to welcome you to the Spartanburg Parks Commission’s 2011 Winter Program Guide. This is the Commission’s winter guide to keep you updated with what we have to offer. This guide is filled with exciting and fun-filled events you don’t want to miss! SPC offers a variety of activities for everyone - from your preschooler to your grandparents - to enjoy. Each guide includes our programs and events from Special Events, Recreation Centers, LEAF Outdoor Recreation, Athletics, 50+, and Cleveland Park. In this issue, we are excited to present our new 50+ adventures, snow sports, outdoor recreation, youth dances, and much more for you and your family and friends to engage in! I encourage you to come out to our Easter Egg Scramble in April at USC Upstate for a family fun filled day! If you can’t make one event, don’t worry, there will be many other opportunities to get involved! Make sure to get you and your children involved in our various sports and activities this winter. Be sure to sign up for our monthly e-newsletter. Go to our website and click on the “Get Newsletters” link at the bottom. We will send you monthly announcements and reminders about registration and events. If you have never experienced our programs before, it’s not too late. Youth Sports Baseball

Junior League Baseball Teams register by April 8 Players must be 13, 14 or 15 years of age as of April 30, 2011 Team Registration Fee: TBD Season begins April 25 and consists of 10 games plus a tournament All games will be played Monday-Thursday at 6/7:45pm at Berry Field.

Big League Baseball Team Registration Fee: TBD Players must be 16-19 years of age as of April 30, 2011. Season begins May 23, 2011 and will consist of a 10 game season. All games will be played at the Inman Sports Complex.

14th Annual Stump Jump XC Mountain Bike Race April 17 - Croft State Natural Area The Spartanburg Parks Commission brings the Stump Jump back to Spartanburg for its fourteenth year of mountain bike racing in the Upstate! This spring tradition is a great event for racers and spectators alike. Be sure not to miss the kids’ race! Visit for complete details.

Disc Golf

2011 Hub City Ice Bowl Presented by Hub City Disc Golf Club and Spartanburg Parks Commission February 5 - Va-Du-Mar McMillan Park, 8AM Registration, 9:15AM Players Meeting The Hub City Ice Bowl is a charity tournament that is a great opportunity for disc golfers of all skill levels to compete for prizes while supporting a worthy cause. All proceeds will benefit the Children’s Security Blanket, an organization that provides

financial and emotional support to families of children with cancer or other life-threatening illness in Spartanburg County. The first 50 registrants will receive a unique Ice Bowl disc. For more information email Ages: All ages welcome Cost: $15

Beginner Disc Golf Clinic April 30 - Va-Du-Mar McMillan Park, 1PM Did you know that Boiling Springs is home to one of the premier disc golf courses in the Southeast? Learn everything you need to know about this family-friendly sport from Hub City Disc Golf Club volunteers so that you can utilize this incredible community asset. All registrants will receive a starter disc, and a 10hole beginner doubles tournament will be held following the clinic. Ages: All ages welcome Cost: $5

LEAF, Continued Fishin’ With The Commission

This initiative of SPC, NRPA, and the Take Me Fishing program is designed to promote the lifelong sport of angling through a variety of activities.

Each registered geocacher that finds 16 of the 20 caches, logs his or her finds at, and submits a fully completed worksheet to LEAF Outdoor Recreation will receive a limited edition, trackable geocoin while supplies last. Cost: FREE!

SPC Youth Fishing Program Youth 15 and under are eligible to become members of the SPC Youth Fishing Club at no cost. Club benefits include an ID card, complimentary use of SPC fishing poles, exclusive fishing privileges at Cleveland Park, a fishing starter kit, updates on kid-friendly fishing events, & much more. Visit our website or contact LEAF Outdoor Recreation or Cleveland Park Staff to get started. This program is an excellent option for class field trips & other large groups. 12th Annual Tame the Tyger River Race and Festival presented by SJWD April 2 - Recreational Float 10AM, Downriver Race 11AM Kick off the return of spring with Spartanburg County’s legendary river festival! Choose to race, float, or just spend a lazy day next to the river. All will enjoy the post-race festival featuring boat demos, live music, and local barbeque. Visit our website for complete details. Trail Maintenance at Croft State Natural Area’s Southside Trails April 9 - Croft State Natural Area, 10AM-1PM This is your chance to give back to the trails that you ride, run, and walk! The trails of Southside need your help after the summer and fall storms. Be prepared to get dirty, meet cool folks, and start your weekend off right with a good workout. Ages: 8+ Cost: FREE!

Tyger River Sweep

Discover Your Watershed April 23 - Lyman Lake Pavilion, 9AM-3PM Dust off your kayak or canoe and enjoy paddling, playing, and learning all about the Tyger River Watershed. Guided wetlands tours and educational exhibits will highlight this program designed to raise awareness about the importance of protecting our water resources. Register early - all participants registered by April 21 will receive a free lunch and a kayak/canoe pass good for the rest of the year on Lake Cooley and Lake Lyman! Don’t have a boat? Canoes and kayaks will be available to use at no cost. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Ages: All welcome! Cost: FREE!

March 26 - 104 Tymberbrook Dr., Lyman, 9AM-Noon Discover the huge impact our actions make on the local watershed by donating a few hours of your time at the spring river cleanup effort brought to you by LEAF, SJWD, Clemson Extension, Tyger River Foundation, and Palmetto Pride. All volunteers will be treated to lunch at the Lyman Lake Lodge, a volunteer T-shirt, and a voucher for $5 off the 2011 Tame the Tyger River Race and Festival. Ages: All welcome!

Snow Sports

Sugar Mountain Winter Sports Trip January 11 - Depart 7AM; Return 7PM February 12 - Depart 7AM; Return 7PM Venture to the winter wonderland of Sugar Mountain Resort in North Carolina and choose from an array of winter activities. Design your own adventure as skiing, snowboarding, tubing, ice skating, and snowshoeing are all offered. Ski and snowboard lessons are available as well. Oral History at the Downtown Library Date & Time: February 15 - Spartanburg County Library, Main Branch, Barrett Room, Noon - 2pm Come and reminisce with us about the good old days. “These were the days my friends” is our oral history, spoken through a group comprised of seven individuals and their stories about growing up in Spartanburg County. They worked in the mills, survived the wars, and saw the area change with the times. This performance is open to all ages, so please pack a lunch and bring your family and friends. Cost: FREE

Spring Fashion Show Date & Time: April 21 - Upper Level Event Center at Cleveland Park, 11am-1pm Come and experience the new fashions for Spring & Summer 2011! Dillard’s will be providing the wardrobe for this event. We will have a catered lunch, then the Fashion Show. Don’t let warm weather sneak up on you in 2011, be ready to beat the heat in great style! NASCAR Hall of Fame

Date & Time: January 18 - Bus will leave from the Clarion Hotel at 9027 Fairforest Road, Spartanburg, SC 29301. From the down-home history of stock car racing to the legendary drivers and their race cars, the NASCAR Hall of Fame has everything that’s great about NASCAR. With amazing artifacts, interactive exhibits, simulator rides and the ever-changing events at the High Octane Theater, you’ll always encounter something new at the Hall. Plus, you can grab a bite to eat in the NASCAR Hall of Fame Café or at the Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant. Cost: $25.00/person*

BMW Plant Tour Date & Time: February - Bus will leave from the Clarion Hotel at 9027 Fairforest Road, Spartanburg, SC 29301 Come and tour the BMW plant in Spartanburg to see the X5 and X6 on the assembly line from beginning to completion! Silver Sneakers

Silver Sneakers is a low-impact fitness group designed for seniors. We offer “Range of Movement” and “Cardio Circuit” classes that involve weights, bands, and exercise balls. The classes are free for Humana clients, but is still affordable if you aren’t part of the Humana system. Afterschool Youth Club

A comprehensive care program that provides a safe and enriching environment during after school hours. Character development, physical activity, and nutrition education are important components to our nationally recognized AYC Clubs. We also provide a nutritious snack and supervised homework time each day. Dates & Times: Monday-Friday 2:30-5:30pm. Open all day on teacher work days and most school holidays. Summer Camp

Looking for something fun for your kids to do this summer? Sign them up for the Spartanburg Parks Commission’s Summer Camp Program. We are offering great weekly themes that will provide something new and exciting each week of camp. Kids will take field trips, interact with guest speakers, play fun games, do arts & craft projects, and most importantly, have fun with their friends in a safe environment. Ages: 5-12 years (child must have completed a full day 4K program and be at least 5 years of age). Proof of age may be required. Cost: $75/week in-district* $75 deposit per child due prior to camp. It will be applied to the last week of camp. (Deposit is non-refundable unless you cancel by May 20) Registration: AYC Participants March 14-28, Community registration dates April 29 - until sites are full Times: Camp is open from 7:30am-5:30pm. Easter Egg Scramble

April 16 - USC Upstate Soccer Fields, 10am-Noon 13,000 plastic eggs plus 1,500 children equals one great morning of family fun! Children from toddlers to 10 years of age come together at the USC Upstate Youth Soccer Fields for the largest Easter egg hunt in the Upstate! Join us for inflatable amusements, a trackless train, face painting, and much more! Cost: $2/person *Out-of-District fees are 25% higher than In-District fees. Cleveland Park Event Center Offers the finest in meeting and banquet facilities. The Event Center is available to rent on an hourly or daily basis.

Note: There is a 2-hour minimum rental requirement for the Lower Level. Security Officers are required for all events serving alcohol or if more than 250 guests are expected. The charge for security officers is $25.00 per hour for a 3-hour minimum. Friday-Sunday late afternoon/evening rentals (not in combination with the Upper Level) are not guaranteed. Upper Level functions will receive priority on reservations. * If you live in an “out-of-district” municipality, please add 25% to the given cost. A 50% deposit must be paid at the time the rental contract is signed. Balance of fee must be paid no later than 30 days prior to the event. Cancellations made 60-90 days prior to the event will result in loss of security deposit. Cancellations made less than 60 days prior to event will result in loss of 50% of total amount listed on the itemized fee report. Rescheduling an event will be treated the same as a cancellation.

Helvetia Island Gazebo & Lakeside Amphitheater These amenities provide the perfect setting for an outdoor wedding ceremony and are available for rent on an hourly basis. The Island gazebo can hold up to 100 guests while the Lakeside Amphitheater can accommodate over 200 guests. Cleveland Park also offers wedding chair rental for your special occasion. Spartanburg Parks Commission Policies Pricing

The Spartanburg Parks Commission prices programs two different ways. Depending on whether or not your municipality participates in our taxing district, you will be subject to In-District or Out-of-District fees. Outof-District fees are 25% higher than In-District fees. Please refer to the following list to see in which pricing category you fall. Program Registration

Advance registration is required for most programs and many fill quickly. Please register early! Programs may be cancelled if minimum enrollment is not met. To Register: Registration can be processed by mail or in person at the Spartanburg Parks Commission office, located at 9039 Fairforest Road in Spartanburg. We are off of Business-85 Exit 2C, behind Cracker Barrel and Subway.

The Spartanburg Parks Commission retains the right to use photos taken by or of visitors while at SPC facilities or at events sponsored by the Commission for publicity purposes.


All recreational activities, including those offered by SPC, have inherent risks that may include personal injury or property loss. For this reason, all participants may be required to sign a form acknowledging their understanding and acceptance of the risks for any particular activity. Parents/guardians are responsible for participants under the age of 18.


Many Spartanburg Parks Commission activities are held in outdoor settings. In most cases, events are held rain or shine. Please plan accordingly and be prepared for rainy conditions. In the event that inclement weather threatens an event, a decision to postpone or reschedule will be made 24 hours in advance and registered participants will be notified of any changes.
