Nelson Henderson

Our Mission The Spartanburg County Foundation is a community trust established for the purpose of promoting such charitable pursuits, as in the judgement of the Trustees of The Foundation, will best make for the mental, moral, intellectual and physical improvement, assistance, relief and well-being of the citizens of the Greater Spartanburg County, South Carolina area.

Y

ou’ve heard it said “The true meaning of life is to plant trees under whose shade you do not expect to sit.” This quote paints a beautiful picture of The Spartanburg County Foundation, a community trust which nurtures the seeds planted by hundreds of generous citizens like you, all in an effort to grow a stronger, more vibrant community for generations to come. Our 2009 report, The Power of Leadership, illustrates the ways in which the Foundation is at the heart of our community serving as a catalyzing force to bring our citizens and resources together to create long-term solutions to Spartanburg’s most pressing issues. From early grants in the 1940’s to implement surveys for community planning, to the establishment of critical initiatives in the1990’s such as Stop the Violence, The Spartanburg County Foundation has always endeavored to be at the right place at the right time providing support where it is needed most. 3

Today, through our key leadership efforts, the Foundation is able to provide knowledge and information, foster strategic connections, convene diverse voices, leverage resources, build individual and organizational capacity and promote philanthropy. Whether working with donors, community leaders, nonprofit organizations or grassroots volunteers - we are here at the center, bringing our citizens together to create a brighter future for our community. Thank you for being our partner on this journey! We acknowledge that The Foundation’s leadership role in the community would not be possible without the extraordinary generosity and foresight of our donors- past and present. Your gifts will benefit Spartanburg forever.

omen Giving for Spartanburg (WGFS) is an exciting project of the Foundation that is uniting diverse women across the county with a common desire to make a difference. The mission of Women Giving is simple: To significantly improve the greater Spartanburg community through the impact of collective giving. In the words of Doris Tidwell, one of WGFS’s members, “Giving as a group is a fantastic way to pool funds and leverage dollars. Women, as natural nurturers, are interested in supporting those efforts that improve the lives of all citizens in our community. Women Giving allows us to make an even greater impact together than we would accomplish on our own.”

Women Giving for Spartanburg Established in 2007, Women Giving is now more than 250 members strong, and has awarded well over $400,000 in grants to 14 organizations working to alleviate hunger and to improve education, health and human services throughout the county. Speaking of the joy it brings to see the impact their grants are making, Jane Breeden, Chair of Women Giving, stated, “We give for an affirmative change, but receive so much in return for our dollars contributed.” Organizations like the Boys and Girls Club, St. Luke’s Free Medical Clinic, Christmas in Action, Healthy Smiles, SAFE Homes Rape Crisis Coalition and the Adult Learning Center have benefited from Women Giving grants. More than $250,000 will be given at the group’s annual meeting in May 2010. Women Giving for Spartanburg holds regular events which provide members opportunities to learn about community needs and determine where their collective gifts will make the greatest impact. T

he Foundation began the Grassroots Leadership Development Institute (GLDI) in 2004 to cultivate the leadership skills of local individuals wishing to bring about positive social change. Through GLDI, participants meet for six months to become better communicators, to think and plan more strategically, and to leverage community assets to address the issues that impact our citizens. For the past three years, the City of Spartanburg has joined as a partner by sending several of the City’s neighborhood leaders through the Institute, thereby increasing their ability to bring about significant change in their neighborhoods. Through GLDI, the Foundation has demonstrated its commitment to provide our citizens with tools and resources to address the issues that affect their lives in significant ways. Recognizing this commitment, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation awarded a $25,000 grant in 2009 to enhance the GLDI curriculum and train participants to utilize technology and tell their stories in ways which will serve as a launch pad for significant work around public policy and advocacy.

Grassroots Leadership Development Institute Now more than 120 individuals strong, GLDI alumni are applying their skills to make a meaningful difference in Spartanburg. Many alumni have assumed leadership positions in the community. Among those are Jerome Rice, Spartanburg City Councilman; Karen Page -Davies, Spartanburg School District 4 Board Member; and J. Ruth Littlejohn, Vice -Chair of the City’s Citizen Advisory Council. For others, like Tammy Stokes, the Institute has provided a springboard for new ideas. Tammy created an imaginary organization as her final GLDI project, which addressed her concern for the lack of civic participation throughout the County. What began as a mere concept is now Citizen Spartanburg, a thriving group of dedicated citizens committed to moving Spartanburg forward by building a stronger participatory democracy and enhancing quality of life. “Citizen Spartanburg is building a movement to inspire citizens to get up, get involved, pick up the banner of Spartanburg’s future and march forward,” stated Tammy. The group holds monthly meetings to provide local residents with an opportunity to connect with one another and discuss community issues. A website, www.citizenspartanburg.org, has also been developed to serve as a repository of resources and to connect individuals with opportunities to get involved.

“The Institute opened my eyes to the realization

that everything I do for my community matters ...” Tammy Stokes

T

he Foundation’s Citizen Scholars Program connects local students with mentors who provide knowledge, encouragement and support throughout their academic journey. Over the course of seven years, from sixth grade to the completion of high school, students receive tutoring and participate in monthly activities designed to help them succeed in all aspects of life. Scholars are exposed to a culture where education is a priority and is an essential element to a successful future. Since the Foundation established the program in 1996, a majority of the scholars have continued their education at institutions of higher learning, pursuing dreams that otherwise seemed impossible a few short years before. “The program provides the support many students wouldn’t otherwise have had,” stated Noeli Cantera, a 2009 graduate of Woodruff High School. “The Citizen Scholars Program opened many doors for me and made it

Citizen Scholars Program possible for me to be where I am now,” continued Noeli, who is currently majoring in biology and mathematics at Wofford College. “The impact of the program has been amazing and has taught me that I can make a difference. I want to be a doctor and help my community in whatever way I can,” stated Noeli. Perhaps a key outcome of the Citizen Scholars Program is teaching students to reach out to touch others in the way they have been impacted. According to Noeli, the difference made in the lives of others as a result of the scholar experience starts right at home. “I share everything the program has taught me with my younger sister, and she is amazed. The skills I learned will benefit her throughout school as well. What is learned from the scholar journey is really a legacy that is passed down from generation to generation.” Each year the Foundation seeks caring mentors who desire to volunteer their time to the program. ince 2004, The Spartanburg County Foundation has partnered with Clemson University to award grants with funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Capital Compassion Fund. Through this partnership, the Foundation has leverged its grant dollars with federal funding to build the capacity of local faith and communitybased organizations to address social problems related to hunger, homelessness, at-risk children, welfare-to-work transitions, addiction and incarceration. Within the last few years, over one million dollars in grants and technical assistance has been awarded through this project.

In 2009, agencies such as Big Brothers/Big Sisters of the Upstate, Charles Lea Center, Ellen Hines Smith Girls Home, Middle Tyger Community Center, Mobile Meals of Spartanburg and the Upstate Fatherhood Coalition received much needed funding to expand their services, develop their staff and boards and to plan strategically for how their organization will meet the growing needs of our citizens in the coming years.

Compassion Project Grants One of the 2009 grantees was Hub City Farmer’s Market, which was awarded an $11,000 grant to begin a Serving Seniors Program to increase the nutrition of lowincome seniors by improving access to fresh fruits and vegetables. “The grant allowed us to perform a community needs assessment to determine what was available to our seniors,” stated Ana Parra, Executive Director. “We learned that elderly citizens living in poverty had very low access to fresh fruits and vegetables, which are critical to helping them remain healthy and independent.” Through the program, the Farmer’s Market has been able to increase the number of seniors receiving and redeeming food vouchers distributed by the Appalachian Council of Governments. “We have gone across the county from health fairs to nursing homes educating our seniors on the importance of good nutrition and getting the word out about the assistance available,” said Ana. “Of equal importance, we have increased the number of local farmers willing to receive the vouchers and assist our seniors living in poverty. The grant has extended our capacity to serve this population, to listen and hear what they are saying and respond appropriately to provide for their needs.”

S

ince 1989, The Spartanburg County Foundation has published indicator reports to

effectively raise awareness of the key issues that impact the growth, health and quality of life in Spartanburg County. The project has evolved into what is now known as The Spartanburg Community Indicators Project, a collaboration between The Spartanburg County Foundation, United Way of the Piedmont, Spartanburg County and University of South Carolina Upstate, which reports on data and community initiatives to inspire dialogue and strategy that leads to change within the community. Indicator reports are now released more frequently to update the community on progress. Events are held several times a year to convene our citizens around the data. “For a community to truly move forward, its citizens must come together and unite around shared goals,” stated Glenn Breed, Spartanburg County Administrator. “The indicator project has provided an avenue for informed civic dialogue which has sparked many projects that are bringing about measurable results throughout the County.”

Pictured: Tina Gaudiano and Dr. Charles Love at a recent Indicator meeting. 23

Spartanburg Community Indicators Project One project currently addressing the indicators is The Road to Better Health Initiative, a collaboration of health agencies working to address many issues brought to light in the recent Indicator Report on the Status of Health in Spartanburg County. Renee Romberger, Spartanburg Regional Healthcare Center’s Vice President of Community Health Policy and Strategy, is one of the leaders involved. “The Community Indicators served as a great kicking off point for us in the public health arena to bring us together to work collaboratively to improve the health of our citizens,” stated Renee. One key focus area for the group has been increasing access to healthcare. Applauding this commitment, Access Health SC recently awarded Spartanburg a grant to develop a network of care for the uninsured. As a result, critical services will be more accessible to our citizens in the future. “The Spartanburg Community Indicators Project really got this started,” added Renee. “It provided a structure which allowed the public health community to pinpoint priority areas and begin working quickly to impact the health needs of our citizens. “The Foundation is providing much needed leadership to this community as we seek to raise our educational attainment to the levels needed to propel Spartanburg forward. Dr. John Stockwell Chancellor, USC Upstate

C

urrently, only 19 percent of adults (age 25 and above) living in Spartanburg County have earned a bachelor’s degree. This number falls far below the national and state averages and represents a critical issue that is limiting the future of our young people and stifling Spartanburg’s economic potential. Realizing the crisis at hand, The Spartanburg Area Chamber of Commerce commissioned a Taskforce on College Degree Attainment in 2007 to propose recommendations to put Spartanburg back on track to compete for jobs and industry. The Chamber turned to The Foundation to serve as a catalyzing force in the implementation of The 40/30 Challenge, a goal of increasing the number of adults holding post-secondary degrees to 40 percent by the year 2030. For the past 2 years, the Foundation has convened our community in the formation of a strategic plan to meet this challenge. Clarence Batts, Jr., BASF Corporation Retiree, is one of more than 200 volunteers who has dedicated countless hours to this effort. “There are only a few things that are essential to building and maintaining a great community,” stated

Pictured: Members of The 40/30 Challenge Steering committee in a strategic planning session. 27

The 40/30 Challenge Clarence, “and one of these is a well educated workforce and citizenry. Each person has a responsibility to himself and to the larger community to dream of success and to seek ideals that the best communities aspire.” The Foundation is currently assisting in the establishment of The College Hub of Spartanburg County which will assist our community in achieving the vision of The 40/30 Challenge and provide our citizens with educational resources and information. This initiative is just one example of how The Spartanburg County Foundation works to create a better future for our community. The Foundation is committed to addressing our most critical issues by inclusively uniting people, institutions and resources to produce significant and lasting results.
