The Power of Generosity Like a vibrant fountain, The Spartanburg County Foundation provides a constant flow of support to five distinct areas of our community. Education, arts & culture, health & human services, environment & historic preservation, and recreation & youth activities encompass the broad spectrum of The Foundation's influence. This ongoing stream of goodwill springs from the unselfish sharing by Spartanburg County citizens like you who wish to “give back to their community. The 2007 annual report celebrates the incredible power of your generosity.

A letter from The Chairman and President The theme for our 2007 annual report is “The Power of Generosity”. Since 1943 The Power of Generosity has been at work through The Spartanburg County Foundation, transforming lives of those who live in this great community. Whether a current or potential donor, grantee, fund recipient, or simply a casual observer, these words speak volumes as to what philanthropy can do when channeled through The Spartanburg County Foundation. It is our goal to continue our efforts in enabling the Foundation to become a more significant force in meeting the needs of this community. In the pages that follow, we will give you examples of how The Foundation’s efforts to leverage The Power of Generosity have been demonstrated in the fields of Education, Arts & Culture, Health & Human Services, Environment & Historic Preservation, Recreation & Youth, as well as Community Leadership. We hope that these stories effectively reflect how well The Foundation works with the power of many partnerships, not only to improve the community today, but also to plant seeds to promote a sustainable community for tomorrow.

the needs and opportunities in our community.

The effect of generosity can be contagious. Wouldn’t it be incredible if every individual earning a living in Spartanburg County felt a desire to give back into the community to help make it a better place to live? This Foundation offers that opportunity and we stand ready to partner with you in a variety of ways. One effective way would be to give an unrestricted gift of any amount to benefit Spartanburg through The Community Fund. Your community foundation remains committed to our mission to improve the quality of life for all of our citizens. It is our partnership with generous people like you that makes that possible. We look forward to the promising future that lies ahead as The Power of Generosity transforms our community for years to come.

The Environment & Historic Preservation “The main reason we need an endowment fund is, when you protect land, you do it forever. We have a long-term

commitment to making sure that the land entrusted to us is always safeguarded.”

The Spartanburg Area Conservancy (SPACE) Fund The Spartanburg Area Conservancy was founded in 1989 by citizens who were concerned over the loss of green areas and open space in our county. Initial funding for SPACE was provided by The Spartanburg County Foundation, which now holds the organization's endowment. SPACE is a non-profit land conservation organization whose purpose is to protect and preserve natural areas of ecological, historical, and aesthetic value. This ultimately enhances the quality of life for all residents and future generations. “A lot of people think that our primary purpose is to provide trails for Spartanburg,” stated Mary Walter, Executive Director, “but SPACE does much more than that. We work with private property owners to help them protect their private and family land in perpetuity.” The endowment fund held at The Spartanburg County Foundation will ensure that SPACE is around for years to come to protect the land entrusted to them. “The main reason we need an endowment fund is, when you protect land, you do it forever,” concludes Walter.

Residents like Dwight Patterson are thankful for SPACE's commitment. Dwight signed a conservation easement which has provided him great peace of mind. “It has always been my desire to leave my property intact,” Dwight explained. “By signing the easement with SPACE, I'm assured that future landowners will not develop this land. It's reassuring to know that the heritage and the beauty of this place will be preserved forever.”

“The Grassroots Leadership Development Institute has impacted my life to the point that I am more outgoing and able to speak out more. It has helped me to become a stronger and better leader for my community.” ~ Randy Murphy, GLDI participant

The Many Benefits of Grassroots Leadership

The Power of Leadership Governed by leaders with strong ties to the community, The Spartanburg County Foundation goes above and beyond the business of grant making. The Foundation also serves as a catalyst to bring diverse groups together to collaborate, form partnerships, address issues, foster giving and generate involvement.

14

The Spartanburg County Foundation

The Grassroots Leadership Development Institute (GLDI) is part of The Spartanburg County Foundation's Strengthening Voices Initiative. This program aims to empower Spartanburg citizens to assume individual and collective responsibility for positive social change. For the past four years, The Spartanburg County Foundation's Grassroots Leadership Development Institute has built social capital by equipping more than 75 individuals with valuable tools and resources needed to be effective leaders. Through this intensive leadership program, participants have been equipped with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to identify and address problems and opportunities in Spartanburg. GLDI session topics include: developing leadership and organizational skills, understanding the community, leveraging community assets, and strategic thinking and planning. In 2007, the City of Spartanburg joined the Foundation as a sponsor for GLDI. Mitch Kennedy, Director of Community Relations, selected ten leaders of downtown neighborhoods, and recruited them into the Institute to provide them with the critical knowledge and skills needed to better lead their communities.

Pictured above: Graduates of the 2007 Grassroots Leadership Development Institute pose for a group photo at the graduation ceremony in November. Pictured left page: Photograph taken at the 2007 Grassroots Leadership Institute Graduation of participants Galena Gaw (left), Loreta Dylgjeri (center) and Ann Harken (right). Photograph by Mark Olencki

“As the City looks to move the neighborhoods from good to great, the key ingredient is leadership,” Mitch explained. “This is why we are excited to partner with the Foundation and provide citizens with this opportunity.” Graduates have formed an alumni association with dual missions: first, to continue to utilize the leadership skills gained in this program; second, to join together as community leaders to make a significant impact on pressing issues in Spartanburg. This new leadership is making an indelible impression on our community. These men and women are excited, equipped and engaged. This Institute is one way to ensure that our citizens receive the support they need to be difference makers.

"Creativity and the willingness to think outside of the box are critical to championing new paths for success and vitality." ~ Mary L. Thomas

Members of the Community Indicator VI Cabinet meet monthly to discuss the project’s progress.

Community Indicators Keep Everyone Focused Since 1989, The Foundation's indicator publications have effectively raised awareness of the key issues that impact the growth, health and quality of life in Spartanburg County. In the most recent edition, Strategic Spartanburg: Community Indicators VI, The Foundation partnered with the United Way of the Piedmont and Spartanburg County to convene hundreds of citizens to examine the issues that face our community and develop strategies to bring about significant change. In 2007, The Foundation made significant progress with our on-going efforts through Community Indicators VI; namely, the recent addition of USC Upstate as a sponsor for this vital project. USC Upstate's Metropolitan Studies Institute, led by Dr. Kathleen Brady, will play a key role in the project by keeping data current, facilitating research and transforming data into dialogue. In addition to the data management portion, dozens of volunteers have been recruited to continue the community-wide effort

to raise awareness of the many quality of life issues facing Spartanburg's citizens. A new website, www.strategicspartanburg.org, was established in 2007 which contains current statistics and also highlights groups utilizing the Indicators. A host of community and faith-based organizations use the indicators for their strategic planning and community outreach efforts. Local funders such as Spartanburg County Government, United Way of the Piedmont, and The Spartanburg County Foundation have all aligned their funding to aid these organizations. This project is seen as a 'best practice' across the nation. Communities have traveled to Spartanburg from as far as Barberton, Ohio to learn ways to replicate this project. On the national scene, a delegation from Spartanburg traveled to Jacksonville in February to present Spartanburg's story at the National Indicators Conference. Community Indicator VI continues to be a dynamic force for change in the Spartanburg community. To get involved or learn more please visit our website at www.strategicspartanburg.org.

In 2006, The Council on Foundations honored our executive vice president, Mary L. Thomas, with the Robert W. Scrivner Award for Creative Grantmaking. The namesake of this prestigious national award was the longtime director of the Rockefeller Family Fund. Mary had the courage to help lead The Spartanburg County Foundation into a period of innovation and grassroots leadership that continues today. With Spartanburg in mind, Mary invested the $10,000 cash award back into her community by establishing the Mary L. Thomas Award for Civic Leadership and Community Change Fund. The community joined Mary in this vision, and the fund soared past its original $100,000 goal. The fund supports many causes that impact the greater Spartanburg area by encouraging strong leaders to continually improve our community. Through the fund, The Spartanburg County Foundation annually honors individuals with The Mary L. Thomas Award for Civic Leadership and Community Change. This award recognizes individuals who are strong leaders, innovators and contributors to community change.

Mary L. Thomas Award for Civic Leadership and Community Change at the Foundation’s Annual Dinner in March, 2007.

The Foundation's first recipient in 2007, Mary Ann Deku, certainly fits this criteria. She has worked for the past 30 years adding value through community volunteerism, while mobilizing citizens to bring about positive change. From working to promote voter registration in our schools and housing complexes, to providing leadership as cochair of a Community Indicator taskforce, Mary Ann has effectively rallied citizens to address needs and promote a better quality of life. As an educator, Mary Ann has implemented effective Character Education programs at Mary H. Wright Elementary School, in which children are taught to become better citizens through serving others. Through her leadership, local students have found creative ways to raise funds for those in need in our community. She has made a personal investment in the lives of our young people in and out of the classroom, helping them to reach their fullest potential. Mary Ann has touched many throughout her years of service, and The Foundation is pleased to recognize her with this award.

"The Foundation’s investment magnified the impact of The Big Read and encouraged readers of all ages to embrace classic American literature.” ~ Todd Stephens, County Librarian Women Giving for Spartanburg members are encouraged to join committees which meet monthly to carry out the mission of the giving circle.

Women Giving for Spartanburg In 2007, The Spartanburg County Foundation established its first giving circle; Women Giving for Spartanburg (WGFS). WGFS's mission is to maximize women's leadership in philanthropy by engaging and informing its membership, increasing charitable contributions, and significantly improving the greater Spartanburg community through the impact of collective giving by women. WGFS is a non-endowed, donor advised fund and the first major women's philanthropic initiative in the area. It is part of a larger national movement of women taking leadership roles in philanthropy to seek long-term solutions through leadership, community investment, fundraising, and advocacy. WGFS is one of 400 similar giving circles, which has collectively raised more than $100 million dollars in the last four years. “This is one of the most exciting projects The Spartanburg County Foundation has undertaken in quite some time,” said Mary Thomas, Executive Vice President, The Spartanburg County Foundation. “We simply provided some leadership, some tools, a vehicle for giving, and the women did it!

I think the potential for success is far greater than we could have ever imagined and we can't wait to see what is yet to come.” WGFS tripled its initial 2007 goal of 50 members by recruiting 150 members by December 31st. This milestone qualified the circle for a $50,000 matching grant that was graciously given by an anonymous donor. The circle meets regularly to learn about community needs, then awards high-impact grants to the community. “I think it is phenomenal that we have gained so many members since October, 2007,” said Julie Lowry, chairwoman of WGFS. “This shows me the generosity and caring nature of women in our community. They give not only their time, but also their resources. I am so proud to have been chair our first year.”

WGFS membership information is available at www.womengivingforspartanburg.org, or you may call The Spartanburg County Foundation office at (864) 582-0138.

The Big Read In 2007, The Spartanburg County Foundation gave a $20,000 grant to the Spartanburg County Libraries to implement The Big Read, a countywide reading initiative. The Big Read promoted literacy in Spartanburg by engaging teenagers and adults in a variety of activities based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby. The Spartanburg County Libraries distributed 4,000 free books across the county, encouraging people of all ages to read for pleasure. More than 2,000 people attended organized book discussions, community educational programs and performances by local artists highlighting music from the era. “The Spartanburg County Foundation’s support of The Big Read: Gatsby About Town leveraged an additional $76,000 in public and private support, including a $20,000 matching grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation,” stated Todd Stephens, County Librarian. “F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby was showcased through literary, theatrical, musical and historical programming, uniting forty-two community partners. The Foundation’s investment magnified the impact of The Big Read and encouraged readers of all ages to embrace classic American literature.” Spartanburg was one of nearly 120 communities across the country who participated in The Big Read last year. The initiative was created by the National Endowment for the Arts in an effort to restore reading to the center of American culture.

Tips for Applying for Grants Tax exempt, nonprofit organizations in Spartanburg County may apply for grants from The Spartanburg County Foundation’s Community Fund for projects that provide innovative responses to recognized community needs that do not duplicate other efforts. We encourage proposals that:

• Enhance the internal stability and growth of a receiving organization. • Have a plan for continued funding from other sources. • Are likely to attract support from matching fund arrangements. The Foundation believes that community-building is essential to our work; therefore, preference will be given to projects that:

• Affect broad segments of the community. • Demonstrate good planning in light of overall community needs. • Are collaborative in nature. • Promote volunteer participation. Please visit our website (www.spcf.org) and click on grant guidelines for complete instructions and information on the letter of inquiry process, or call The Spartanburg County Foundation office at (864) 582-0138 for more information.
