Creating Lake Norman

This body of water generates more than power BY LORI K. TATE

Great Lake Living at Lake Norman

Lake Norman is not a natural lake. When newcomers discover its history, they’re surprised to learn that the lake is a little more than 50 years old, as the formation of Lake Norman began in 1963. However, plans were in the works long before then. In the early 1900s, James B. Duke, William S. Lee and Dr. W. Gil Wylie envisioned how a series of dams on the Catawba River could literally power the South’s future, in particular the Carolina Piedmont’s future. Cowans Ford Dam was built by Duke Power (now Duke Energy) on a historic Revolutionary War battle site. Ground was broken on the project on September 28, 1959. Four years later the dam was complete with a length of 7,387 feet, which includes more than a mile of earthen dam. The concrete portion alone is 1,279 feet long and 130 feet high. Bill Lee, the grandson of William S. Lee and the chairman of Duke Power Company at the time, led this A Product of Lake Norman CURRENTS Magazine

engineering feat. While the complexity of the project seemed at times staggering, not to mention the emotional impact on the community as two river crossings (Sherrill’s Ford and Beatty’s Ford) would be flooded in addition to many original homesites, Lake Norman was the result of a dream (60 years in the making) come true. Often referred to as “The Inland Sea,” Lake Norman offers 520 miles of shoreline (more than North and South Carolina’s coasts combined) and is named for Norman Atwater Cocke, a retired Duke Power president. For years, Lake Norman was a weekend getaway destination, as people in the Piedmont would flock to cabins along its shores to get away from every day life. In 1964 Duke Power offered more than 2,600 cottage sites with leases starting at $120 a year. Eventually subdivisions were established, and folks began to live on Lake Norman’s shores full time. 2016-17

Though people started realizing how beautiful and satisfying lake living was, heavy development didn’t take off until the 1990s, as the Charlotte area’s thriving business environment brought more people to the area and the infrastrure was in place to support a larger population. While Lake Norman has more than lived up to its power-producing expectations, it has also transformed what was once a heavily agricultural and textile community into more of a resort area that attracts a variety of people from around the world. On the north end of the lake, you’ll still find many agricultural pockets untouched by development. If you hit it on the right day, you might even discover a cow or two soaking in the water off the shores of Catawba County. The southern part of the lake attracts many people who make their living in nearby Charlotte. When traffic flows, you can travel from your office in Uptown Charlotte to Lake Norman

in approximately 30 minutes. Not many urban areas offer a lakeside respite so quickly. As power continues to flow from Lake Norman, so do its memories. Ask around and you’re likely to find someone who was around when the lake filled. They’ll remember the Robert E. Lee, the first tour boat on the lake; the 85-pound catfish that won the state record; Outrigger Harbor, the original marina that stood where The Peninsula Yacht Club is today; and how Hurricane Hugo ravaged Lake Norman’s shores in 1989. More than 50 years after its creation, Lake Norman remains a peaceful respite for an extraordinary community of people. Note: Lake Norman Our Inland Sea by Bill and Diana Gleasner and Images of America Around Lake Norman by Cindy Jacobs were used as research tools for this article. Both are excellent books about Lake Norman’s history. Great Lake Living at Lake Norman

The Mooresville Graded School District provides another public school option. The district is known nationally for its comprehensive digital plan, as it has distributed more than 4,400 laptop computers to 2ndthrough 12th- grade students and all licensed staff across the district. Dr. Mark Edwards, superintendent of Mooresville Graded School District, was named the 2013 AASA (American Association of School Administrators) National Superintendent of the Year. During that same year President Barack Obama visited the school district to see its success firsthand. Also serving the Lake Norman area are some of the Iredell-Statesville Schools. Lake Norman High School in Mooresville is a newer high school in the system and was named an Honor School of Excellence, the highest ranking by the state. Some area elementary and middle schools also were named Honor Schools of Excellence or Schools of Excellence. In addition, Brady Johnson, superintendent of Iredell-Statesville Schools, received the 2014 A. Craig Phillips North Carolina Superintendent of the Year award.

Other public options For other public options, families can consider charter schools, for which tax dollars provide partial funding. These schools are required to have no discrimination, no religious associations and no tuition. If charter schools have more applicants than available slots, they must use open lotteries to fill remaining spots. Community School of Davidson is a public charter school offering grades K-12. The school was named an Honor School of Excellence and has less than 1,200 students. The average GPA of the class of 2014 was 3.74 on a 4.0 scale. In 2016, U.S. News & World Report ranked CSD the 15th best high school in North Carolina and the 500th best high school nationwide. Fruitful Grounds

The lake region has transformed from a farm community to an internationally attractive business region BY MIKE SAVICKI 2016-17

Economic Development

In the years before Duke Energy unveiled its master plan to construct both the Cowans Ford Dam and the McGuire Nuclear Station, then transform the Catawba River into Lake Norman, Huntersville, Cornelius and Davidson were nothing more than quiet farm communities and small mill towns. Land was plentiful, and labor was cheap. The city of Charlotte, to those who called the three-town region home, was a different entity in itself, a metropolis more than a drive away. Following the completion of Lake Norman, as infastructure additions and improvements came quickly, the area developed a new, overlapping residential and business identity. As industry sprouted alongside residential communities and neighborhoods, the three-town region became more than an attractive “live” and “play” suburb, it added the “work” title to Great Lake Living at Lake Norman

its nomenclature. A glance at the region’s list of top employers paints a picture of the economic diversity that has taken root today. In Huntersville, Duke Energy’s McGuire Nuclear Station employs 1,200, while Novant Health employs 690, Joe Gibbs Racing 650 and Rubbermaid 400. Ingersoll-Rand, which puts 1,600 to work, anchors the small town of Davidson, while Davidson College employs 750 and MSC 350. And in Cornelius, where the residential tax base constitutes nearly 85 percent of the annual town budget, Financial Independence Group employs 130, while FXI and Curtis Screw Company put 100 each to work in their facilities. At home in the region, it’s safe to say a steady buzz is building and the future looks fruitful. Extraordinary things are happening. Innovation and high technology are driving the transformation. The soils that once grew cotton and oats, and supported thousands upon thousands of acres of farmland, have transformed into expansive business parks where international businesses are planting seeds. Job creation is up, unemployment is down and with an influx of highly educated high school,

college and post graduate residents establishing residences, companies are relocating and expanding to take advantage of the skilled local workforce. In late 2014, Burkert Fluid Control Systems, in partnership with Mecklenburg County, the Town of Huntersville and Lake Norman Ecconomic Development, announced plans to develop a 120,000-square-

foot advanced manufacturing facility near the southern tip of the lake. The company plans to invest $23 million over the next five years and create 61 new jobs. The spring 2015 groundbreaking ceremony signaled full speed ahead for construction. While the three towns compete for business, they also collaborate, appreciating that what is good for one town benefits all three. Perhaps

no single project represents the collective drive for regional economic growth than Commerce Station, a business park owned by Huntersville, Cornelius and Davidson. Home to ABB, a global leader in power and automated technologies, and Pactiv, a plastics manufacturer, the Huntersville park is site-ready for

growth and expansion. With the Charlotte Douglas International Airport just 15 minutes away, business eyes from Europe and Asia have tightened their focus. While technology and advanced manufacturing have captured the spotlight, they are not alone. With town commissioners voting to change

zoning requirements to allow for growth, the craft beer industry, which once thrived primarily in the mountain area around Asheville, has taken root at the lake. Five regional microbrew facilities, along with a handful of taprooms and bottle shops, now greet customers up and down the economic corridor. With a sixth soon to open, as well, the Lake Norman region has established an identity as the state’s most rapidly growing microbrew capital. The future looks even more promising for business. The same town boards who historically made decisions to encourage and support residental growth are now weighing the pros of a major economic shift. Rezoning for business parks, standalone facilities, and even multistory hotel and convention centers dominate monthly agendas. And with airport planners sharing ideas for adding a new runway, one with the length to support non-stop flights to business destinations as far away as Asia, the future for this once small and quiet farming region is close to completing its international business transformation. Shop Until You Drop Retail therapy at its best BY LORI K. TATE

Sure, The Queen City has its retail jewels (think IKEA, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and Tory Burch), but the Lake Norman area also offers plenty of shopping to explore. And the best part is that you don’t have to sweat the traffic on I-77 to enjoy it. Need a pair of flip-flops by Jack Rogers? No problem. Fancy a Tory Burch tote? Check. Want a classic Nicole Miller dress? We’ve got that, too. You just have to know where to look.

Great Lake Living at Lake Norman

We’ll begin at Exit 18, where you’ll find Northlake Mall, filled with every chain you could want from Macy’s to H & M to J. Crew to Belk. Surrounding the mall is a selection of big boxes, including one of Mecklenburg County’s two REIs. If you can’t find what you need at this exit, you might want to rethink what you need. Exit 25 brings you to Huntersville, where you’ll find Lowe’s, Target and Kohl’s, along with Birkdale Village, a mixed-use shopping center that serves as the unofficial town square. With a nice mix of fun local shops (The Jewel Box and Poppies) and chains (think Banana Republic, Gap and Talbots), Birkdale offers a pleasant shopping experience even for those who don’t enjoy shopping. Stop by on Friday or Saturday evenings during the summer for the Mingling on the Green Concert Series, where you can enjoy live music at the center fountain. Three miles north at Exit 28 is Cornelius, which is peppered with quaint shops up and down Catawba Avenue. Keep your eyes open for home interior shops (The Shoppes at Home Heart & Soul and Bebe Gallini’s) that offer one-of-a-kind home accessories and women’s boutiques such as Avalilly’s and Luna’s.

Downtown Mooresville (Exit 33 and 36) also offers an old school shopping experience with a true hardware store, a cozy gallery and a variety of shops. West of I-77 in Mooresville, you’ll find any big box store you need, including Best Buy, HomeGoods, Michael’s, Old Navy, Super Target, Staples and more. Throughout the Lake Norman area there are plenty of mom and pop shops eager to please with personalized customer service and an inventory of specialized items. AwardWinning Cuisine

The lake’s restaurant scene garners national attention BY CATHY SWINEY

The number of appetizing restaurant choices continues to grow here, and that’s a good thing. The current jewel in the area’s restaurant crown is Kindred in Davidson. Owned by Joe and Katy Kindred, the restaurant was ranked eighth on Bon Appetit’s list of best new American restaurants of 2015. As if that isn’t enough, Kindred was also named a James Beard Award Semifinalist in 2016. Needless to say, things are cooking at Kindred — in addition to a smorgasbord of restaurants in the area. At Lake Norman, diners can find the cuisine of many cultures. Menus featuring Mexican, Latin American, Caribbean, Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Italian, Greek, Irish and Indian food join all manner of American cuisine. The waters of the lake inspire

relaxing and fun-filled times, and that mood carries over into many restaurants. More often than not, diners are casually dressed, children’s favorites are offered and prices are affordable. Many places also have outdoor seating, so you can enjoy your meal and the fresh air when the weather is favorable. Following a national trend, more and more chefs in the area are building relationships with local farmers and visiting farmers’ markets to secure fresh, in-season ingredients for their menus. Diners can taste the difference. Cheeses for appetizers, greens for salads, seafood and poultry for entrees, vegetables for side dishes, and fruits for cobblers are just a sampling of what can be found. Ready, Set, Roadtrip Lake Norman is the perfect starting point for an adventure 2016-17

Aside from its recreational lifestyle, one of Lake Norman’s best features is its close proximity to attractions throughout the Carolinas. Nearby Mooresville offers a variety of racing adventures, as you can tour race shops and museums, while Denver on the west side of the lake offers an even more laid back lifestyle. Be sure not to miss the Denver Days Festival in September. With live music, rides and a beer garden, it’s one of the hottest tickets around. And although no Lake Norman resident is just itching to leave their lakeside haven, everyone can use a change of (even the best) scenery every once in a while. That said, mountain, beach and shopping destinations abound in North and South Carolina — and all are Great Lake Living at Lake Norman

well within driving distance of Lake Norman. Whether you want a quick jaunt a couple of hours up the Blue Ridge Parkway or a leave-your-caresbehind retreat to one of the many beaches along the Carolina coast, Lake Norman is perfectly positioned as a home base for all manner of Carolina adventures.

Drive Time: 2.5 hours

Asheville is western North Carolina’s largest city and serves as the business, cultural, shopping and dining hub of the mountains. Asheville is known across the world for being a mountain gem, as it has an arts scene filled with concerts, festivals, art galleries and performances. The city is located in the heart of the Blue Ridge and is known for its natural beauty. The Blue Ridge Parkway, which brushes Asheville, attracts motorists each October when the trees begin to turn. The historic Biltmore Estate, which sits on the city’s outskirts, is a favorite destination for those who love spring flowers and beautiful holiday decor.

Drive Time: 2 hours

Boone is another North Carolina mountain destination Lake Norman residents can easily reach for a fun day trip or long weekend. Some of the Blue Ridge’s highest peaks are located in the Boone area. It’s another favorite for those interested in viewing the beautiful fall foliage. Many bed and breakfasts beckon visitors year round, and the town is home to Appalachian State University. During the holidays, dozens of Christmas tree farms open for business so families can pick out the perfect tree and make lifelong memories in the process.

Drive Time: 3.5 hours

Few destinations anywhere are as splendid as Charleston, South Carolina. Make one trip to this

charming Southern city and you’re sure to be back. Charleston is located on the coast and is considered by many to be the South’s cultural capital. Dining in Charleston is world class, and the city’s dozens of restaurants offer Lowcountry menus that simply can’t be beat. Here you’ll find beautiful gardens wedged between historic pastel homes — many of which were built before the Civil War (which started in nearby Fort Sumter). Beachgoers are also at home in Charleston. Folly Beach, Isle of Palms, Kiawah Island, Seabrook Island and Sullivan’s Island offer a variety of fun for those wanting to hit the sand. MYRTLE BEACH

Few places are as hot come summer as Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and we’re not just talking about the temperatures. Myrtle Beach boasts miles and miles of beautiful beaches, hotels at every price point, hundreds of shops and nearly 2,000 restaurants. And if you’re a golfer, few places can offer more than the Myrtle Beach area does all year long. More than 14 million people visit Myrtle Beach each year. Families love the carefree summertime atmosphere the beach offers, and with amusement parks, theaters and nightclubs in the mix, there’s truly something for everyone at Myrtle Beach.

Seagrove itself is a tiny town in North Carolina’s Randolph County. But combined with several nearby towns, Seagrove is considered by some to be the pottery capital of the United States. Pottery here dates back to before the Revolutionary War, and

it is still celebrated today. The North Carolina Pottery Center is located in Seagrove and offers visitors both permanent and traveling exhibitions, as well as a museum shop and periodic live demonstrations. Festivals throughout the year make it even easier to see all of the region’s talent.

Drive Time — Hickory: 45 minutes Drive Time — High Point and Thomasville: 90 minutes

North Carolina has long been considered the furniture capital of the United States, and no three cities are more tied to furniture than Hickory, High Point and Thomasville. Despite recent trends toward moving production overseas, some of the best-known brands in the furniture industry remain headquartered in these three cities. In fact, some of the most extravagant furniture you’ll ever see moves through these areas. A drive through the heart of Hickory on Highway 321 shows just how many outlets still sell locally made goods. High Point hosts a twice-ayear furniture market that attracts thousands of industry buyers from all over the world. A Product of Lake Norman CURRENTS Magazine

Huntersville Full of fun for families

BY RENEE ROBERSON It’s hard to believe it, but this fall will mark my family’s 13th year of living in Huntersville. We moved into our neighborhood, which is actually only about 10 minutes away from Charlotte’s city 2016-17

limits, with one infant and a dog in tow. Now, we have two kids (ages 12 and 10) and two dogs. We came here originally for my husband’s job in Mooresville, and he now works in south Charlotte. With our kids in a charter school in Davidson, Huntersville has provided us with a happy medium in which to live. Depending on which side of Huntersville you live on, you can be in Davidson, Cornelius, Denver, Concord or Charlotte within minutes. The town has great neighborhoods for families such as Birkdale, Hampton Ridge, Stephens Grove and Vermillion, Great Lake Living at Lake Norman

just to name a few. Huntersville offers families a unique blend of history (with places like Latta Plantation, Historic Rural Hill and Old Store Produce — all off Beatties Ford Road), along with modern conveniences, such as plenty of places to work out, a variety of grocery stores, such as Publix, Whole Foods and Earth Fare, and retail shopping centers like Birkdale Village (our favorite place to go to the movies). And while Charlotte does a great job of offering numerous festivals, cultural and sporting events, Huntersville also does a great job of holding its own. Each year the town plans events that families can look forward to, such as A Huntersville Christmas with its carnival rides, Hello Huntersville, the seasonal Growers Market and Movies in the Park. These are events that my kids will remember fondly as they grow older. People travel from all over to attend

My kids love the atmosphere of the Rural Hill Sheepdog Trials and Dog Festival, and the Food Truck Rally at Rural Hill grows more and more popular each year. Other reasons we love Huntersville include the amazing North County Regional Library and numerous parks and greenways that help us

stay in shape. We can hop in the car and five minutes later be ready for a family hike at Latta Plantation. My kids still love visiting all the different playgrounds and parks — just today my son pointed out Blythe Landing and said, “We haven’t been there in a while — we need to go back.” There are also the hidden gems like Lake Norman Community Sailing, where residents can purchase family passes that give you access to affordable and accessible water activities. While we’re happy to head into Charlotte to take in a show, concert or sporting event, Huntersville will always hold a special place in our hearts for giving us a safe and fun environment to raise our family. Davidson Living the Dream BY LORI K. TATE

Great Lake Living at Lake Norman

Walking in downtown Davidson is always a treat because it’s inevitable that you’ll run into someone you know. That’s no accident, as the folks in Davidson have worked hard to create a walkable small town where everyone knows everyone else. While it’s charming to check in with friends while you sip a latte at Summit Coffee, there’s a magical quality that permeates throughout the entire town. During certain times of the year, the magic comes through even more. For three nights in December, the town turns into a Norman Rockwell painting with its A Product of Lake Norman CURRENTS Magazine

Christmas in Davidson celebration. Horse-drawn carriages decked in holly gallop through town, while Santa Claus listens to wish lists at the town library. A carousel thrills little ones, as carolers who look as if they stepped out of a Charles Dickens’ novel sing God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen in perfect harmony. Davidson United Methodist Church caps off the festivities with a live nativity. In the spring, Town Day brings out a variety of performers to the Village Green, as well as a ropes course built by the local Boy Scouts and the Canine Cover Dog competition for CURRENTS Magazine, the publisher of this publication. Throughout the summer, Concerts on the Green brings live concerts to the Village Green — Band of Oz is a perennial favorite. People set their tents up early to make sure they get a prime picnic spot for the show. On Saturday mornings, residents flock to the Davidson Farmers’ Market with baskets in hand, looking for the best produce, meats and cheeses.

Davidson by the numbers Year incorporated: 1879 Population: 11,981 Median household income: $94,551 Median value of owner-occupied housing units: $379,200 Source:

Contact: Town of Davidson 704.892.7591 Many treat themselves to a bouquet of flowers to carry them through the week. Live folk and bluegrass music gives the market more of a festival feel, and chef demonstrations inspire everyone to try a little harder in the kitchen. However, if you don’t feel like cooking, Davidson has one of the hottest dining scenes around. With eateries such as Carrburritos, Flatiron Kitchen + Taphouse, Kindred, Mestizo, Millstone, Toast and many

more, it’s hard to decide what’s for lunch or dinner. And you can bet that as soon as you take a seat, you’ll see someone you know. Of course, one of the best parts of Davidson is Davidson College, the nucleus of town. Established by the Presbyterian Church in 1837, the college brings performances, speakers and international flair to the community, not to mention exciting basketball games. Ever heard of Steph Curry? Walking on its brick sidewalks, under the oak trees is a favorite activity, as the campus reminds many of their own college days. Students scurry to class on foot or via bike, and you can’t help but feel hopeful for the future. Whenever I have to run an errand in Davidson, it doesn’t feel like an errand at all. Instead it feels like a little retreat, where tradition and sophstication mesh together to create a vibrant environment of which I’m grateful to be a part.

Cornelius This is home BY LORI K. TATE I always imagined how fun it would be to live at Lake Norman while living in Charlotte as a 20-something. When I was stressed out, I would drive to Ramsey Creek Park and write in my journal while the sound of the water soothed me. As a child I grew up frolicking on the shores of nearby Lake Tillery, so I was no stranger to how fun and peaceful lake living could be. Lucky for me I married a Cornelius native, and we eventually made our home here. At first my husband worried that I would be homesick for The Queen City, but now he’s the one who has to talk me into making the trek down I-77 to Charlotte for special 2015-16

events. Don’t misunderstand me. Charlotte is a fine city, but the truth is that I have everything I need right here. I grew up in a small town, so it’s important to me to know my neighbors and my community. The size of Cornelius and the friendliness of its people make this an easy task. It’s rare that I don’t run into someone I know at The Fresh Market or at the super fun ‘Tawba Walk Arts & Music Festival. People always want to know how you’re doing and how they can help if you’re not doing well. What makes Cornelius special is how it successfully marries down-home goodness with progress. This is a town where churches and fire departments still hold annual barbecues and where members of the Rotary Club make pancakes to raise money for noble causes. It’s also a place that offers the type of luxury amenities that attract the likes of corporate leaders, as well as professional athletes. Not many places can do both well — Cornelius does. Then there’s the variety of things to do here. In Cornelius I can take my children to all sorts of parks and festivals. I can take them on a lakeside picnic at Jetton Great Lake Living at Lake Norman

Park. I can even attend a cutting-edge play at The Warehouse Performing Arts Center (after said picnic). My 6-year-old twins adore Bailey Road Park, and its statuesque silo. And despite how young they are, they too appreciate how glorious a Lake Norman sunset can be, as they often

spot it before I do. Whether you’re on a boat or on the shore, it will take your breath away, and it’s never the same. As for me, I try to paddleboard as often as I can, and when I’m not in the water, you can find me searching for treasures at Bebe Gallini’s, Fifi’s

Town of Cornelius 704.892.6031 Fine Resale or Sweet Magnolia. When I have extra browse time, I love to revisit history through the antiques at Oak Street Mill. All of these places are locally owned, and you can bet the clerks will remember your name if you visit more than once. I’m happy to raise my children in such a nurturing and vibrant environment, and I’m even happier to call Cornelius my home. Looks like my hunch about living at Lake Norman was right.

A Place to Call Home From lakefront lots to family neighborhoods, Lake Norman has it all BY RENEE ROBERSON There’s a lot to love about living at Lake Norman. With its four seasons, diverse and growing job opportunities, and activities for cultural and outdoor enthusiasts, more and more people are calling the area home. Another thing that makes Lake Norman so attractive is the numerous ways you can live here, depending on your lifestyle and budget. Frances Dawson, a Realtor and broker with RE/MAX Executive at the Lake, says she is seeing families moving

Great Lake Living at Lake Norman

from more expensive regions of the West Coast and upstate New York, empty nesters hoping to settle down near their adult children and grandchildren, and young professionals looking for lifestyle options, among others. We asked Dawson to give us an overview of some of the options for living at the lake, whether it’s a neighborhood perfect for families, senior citizens or those searching for an upscale living experience.

Family Communities

The towns of Mooresville, Huntersville, Davidson, Cornelius and Denver have numerous neighborhoods perfect for those hoping to build memories with their families. Huntersville has Birkdale ($300,000+) and The Greens at Birkdale ($200,000+), both adjacent to the bustling Birkdale Village shopping center, with pools, playgrounds, a golf course, and bike and walking trails. For those who want to experience life in a quaint college town, River Run in Davidson also offers family homes on a golf course and clubhouse, along with a fitness center, tennis courts and swim clubs. Homes in River Run start in the mid-$350s and sell for more than $1 million. The neighborhood also has lots available for purchase for A Product of Lake Norman CURRENTS Magazine

those hoping to custom build. In Mooresville, Cherry Grove has homes averaging $250,000-$350,000 on mature lots, and the neighborhood also has a pool, clubhouse, tennis courts and recreation area.

Upscale Living

There are also plenty of places to find a luxurious lakeside retreat. Sisters Cove is a lakefront community in Mooresville that has homes ranging from $675,000 to $1 million, and the

neighborhood features deeded boat slips, walking trails and a dog park. For those who love being close to golf, The Point at Trump at National Golf Club (with homes priced from half a million to the millions) in Mooresville features a golf club, restaurant and lounge racquetball courts, a pool, a playground, and a full-time activities director. For those who want a new and modern home with a more easyto-maintain lot, Robbins Park in

Cornelius has 4,000-square-foot homes from $550,000 to $850,000. The neighborhood has a pool, tennis courts, walking trails, athletic fields and a popular playground. Nearby, you’ll find The Peninsula, a luxury golf course community, complete with a yacht club, fitness center and eight Har-Tru clay tennis courts. On the west side of the lake, SailView, in Denver, is a popular neighborhood that has a pool, clubhouse, two playgrounds and deeded boat slips.

Communities such as Bailey’s Glenn in Cornelius are perfect for senior citizens seeking a home in the $300,000 to $500,000 range. The community, which is currently opening a new phase, features a clubhouse and swimming pool, along with social activities residents can engage in. The Annual Carolina Renaissance Festival Every year, thousands turn out for one of the most interactive entertainment events in the area. There’s comedy, music, dancing, circus performers, jousting knights on horseback — not to mention 500 costumed characters that roam the festival’s village. You can also eat and shop until your heart’s content. This year’s event takes place on Saturdays and Sundays from October 1-November 20. A Product of Lake Norman CURRENTS Magazine

All Kinds of Fun

Get your kicks on water or land BY RENEE ROBERSON

When traffic slows on I-77, most of the time it can be attributed to folks taking in the views of Lake Norman. Even if you live here, it’s hard not to glance over at the

water as the sun showers its diamond sparkles on its surface. Being on the water is what life is about here, however, believe it or not, it’s only one of the many recreational activities residents enjoy at Lake Norman. Here’s a look at what adventures await you, rain or shine, cold or warm weather. If you want to spend time outdoors, Lake Norman is fortunate to have a great public park system, countless trails for biking and hiking, and parks with plenty of recreational fields and playground equipment. In Cornelius, Ramsey Creek Park is a 43-acre waterfront park with boat-launching areas, docks, a fishing pier and a newly opened public swimming beach. There are also picnic shelters, horseshoe pits, a volleyball court, a three-acre dog park, playground and nature trails. Visitors can rent large “funbrellas” to utilize on the large waterfront picnic area. Another popular destination for those who love to A Product of Lake Norman CURRENTS Magazine

spend time outdoors is Jetton Park in Cornelius. The 105-acre park has a beach area, wooden gazebos, a formal garden and a playground. There are also eight tennis courts, and paved walking and biking trails, most of which wind through nicely shaded wooded areas. For a small fee, visitors can rent waterside picnic decks equipped with a grill and a table. In Troutman, there’s Lake Norman State Park, an ideal place to enjoy the area’s natural beauty and go running or mountain biking. The 1,328-acre park includes 13 miles of shoreline along the northeastern shore of Lake Norman. There is a 125-yard beach and public swimming area, which is supervised by lifeguards seasonally, as well as a concession stand, showers, restrooms and changing stalls. In Davidson, walkers and cyclists enjoy the natural beauty of Fisher Farm Park, located on 200 acres of woods off Shearer Road. It features four miles of biking trails with enough terrain for different skill

levels. There’s also a 2.5-mile walking trail on site. In Huntersville, visit the Latta Plantation Center and Nature Preserve, situated on more than 1,000 acres on Mountain Island Lake. There, you’ll find an equestrian center, hiking trails and the Carolina Raptor Center, where visitors can observe more than 25 species of raptors living along a Raptor Trail with a selfguided tour. Also in Huntersville, Blythe Landing offers 26 acres of fun with floating piers and boat ramps, a beach and playground, picnic areas, and sand volleyball courts. Blythe Landing is also home to North Carolina Community Sailing, which offers a variety of sailing programs for all ages. In addition to the 520 miles of lake shoreline, there are also stateof-the-art fitness centers that offer amenities for every member of the family, as well as swimming, canoeing and kayaking lessons, all of which provide plenty of things to do during the colder winter months. One great place for families to get fit is Huntersville Family Fitness & Aquatics. The 88,000-square-foot facility is home to a 25-yard warm water pool and outdoor family fun pool. It also holds the distinction of being the only public facility in the Southeast with an Olympicsize, 50-meter competition pool and 10-meter dive tower. It is often host to aquatic events with up to 2,000 spectators for regional, national, world-class swim and dive competitions. In addition, there’s a full-court gymnasium and a complete fitness center with cardiovascular training equipment such as treadmills, elliptical trainers, and stationary bicycles and group exercise classes. The Lake Norman YMCA in Cornelius is equally as popular, as you can learn to sail, water-ski, canoe, paddleboard or kayak at this branch. In addition, you can enjoy a beachfront picnic after a rousing

The Lowe’s YMCA in Mooresville is a great place for people of all ages to have fun, exercise and get to know others in the community. The 57,000-square-foot facility is packed with the latest cardiovascular and strength-training equipment, an indoor water park, lap swim pool, group exercise studios, indoor and outdoor walking tracks, a full gymnasium, and more. There’s also special health and fitness training programs, summer day camps, youth and adult sports, and an adventure club, where members get together and go hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, snow skiing and rafting. Add to all of this that a more than 50,000-square-feet aquatic center is in the works at LangTree Lake Norman in Mooresville, and it’s obvious that residents in the Lake Norman area don’t like to sit still. Pick a Team All types of sports at all levels can be found here BY MIKE SAVICKI If you want to catch an NFL or NBA game, a NASCAR race, or even exciting college and minor league sports in person, you are in the right place. In less than an hour, you can catch sports at the highest level of competition.

Carolina Panthers

Charlotte locals might remember a

Great Lake Living at Lake Norman

time when catching an NFL football game in person meant taking a road trip to Atlanta or Washington, DC. But when the Carolina Panthers joined the league in 1995 and moved into their newly constructed home at Bank of America Stadium, those other cities and their teams became nothing more than chief rivals, while the hometown team began building its identity and fans began traditions of their own. In 2016, the Carolina Panthers played

in the Superbowl and had the whole country “dabbing” with quarterback Cam Newton. The games are electric, the tailgating is fabulous and the stadium pounds with excitement. Grab a single game or season ticket or get on your feet at one of the dozens of bars and restaurants surrounding the stadium. Go Panthers!

NASCAR plays a significant role in the local economy. In addition to the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, many high-profile NASCAR teams are headquartered in stateof-the-art production shops located in Huntersville, Cornelius and A Product of Lake Norman CURRENTS Magazine

Mooresville, while others aren’t far away. Scores of drivers live on the shores of Lake Norman, and it’s not uncommon to see them boating on the water or out at local restaurants and shops when they aren’t chasing the checkered flag. Thousands of crew members, NASCAR support personnel and supporting business owners live and play around Lake Norman, too. When it comes time to race, Lake Norman residents can make a 30-minute drive to Charlotte Motor Speedway to see their favorite teams and drivers in action. The track hosts major NASCAR races in May and October, and smaller races and events almost every other week of the year.

Charlotte Hornets

Charlotte’s history with professional sports dates back to the 1980s when the city’s first-ever major pro sports team — the Hornets — began competing in an arena just off of Tyvola Boulevard. When the team left for New Orleans in 2002, it took the name. However, in the fall of 2014, the Charlotte Bobcats rebranded themselves as the Charlotte Hornets, and fans couldn’t be happier about it. North Carolina native and former NBA superstar Michael Jordan owns the team, and the recent changes he made not only in the front office but also on the floor have the team playing competitive ball once again. Home games are played at Time Warner Cable Arena.

Charlotte Checkers

Even though we’re in the South, pucks fly in ice rinks across the Carolinas. The Charlotte Checkers are the region’s minor league hockey team and serve as the American Hockey League affiliate for the Raleigh-based Carolina Hurricanes of the NHL. While the Hurricanes are relatively new to the state, the Checkers name has been associated with Charlotte hockey teams since 2016-17

A Product of Lake Norman CURRENTS Magazine

the 1950s. Today’s team plays its home games from October to April at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte where the action is more fast and furious than ever before.

Charlotte Knights

If you’re in the mood to see tomorrow’s Major League Baseball stars today, head to uptown Charlotte for a Charlotte Knights game. This is the third season the Class AAA affiliate of the Chicago White Sox has played in the new BB&T Ballpark, and fans can’t get enough of it. The uptown business crowd loves being able to walk from their offices to the stadium to catch a mid-week evening game before heading home to the lake, and families are abuzz for the kid friendly amenities that surround the diamond. BB&T Ballpark is located down the street from Bank of America Stadium.

Kannapolis Intimidators

The minor league baseball team in nearby Kannapolis features one of the most unique names in all of baseball. The Intimidators are the Class A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, and they are named after legendary NASCAR racer — and Kannapolis native — Dale Earnhardt. The team plays in the Class A South Atlantic League and features players just beginning their journey to the major leagues. Home games at the 4,700-seat CMC-Northeast Stadium are about as intimate as a fan could ask for. So bring your glove, and keep your eyes peeled for foul balls and home runs or just sit back and watch the fireworks displays that light up the sky after weekend games. The Intimidators play from April through early September.

Davidson College Wildcats

In 2014, Davidson College joined the Atlantic 10 Conference and

quickly proved that it has what it takes to compete with the big dogs, as the men’s basketball team won the regular season championship and played in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Charlotte native and NBA standout, Steph Curry, took the Wildcats to the Elite Eight in 2008. In 2016, Curry, who plays for the Golden State Warriors, was voted the NBA’s first unanimous MVP. Head Coach Bob McKillop continues to lead the men’s basketball program, and the team plays its home games on campus at Belk Arena. Paul Nichols, a Davidson alumni, coaches the football team, and a handful of women’s teams from basketball and field hockey to tennis and lacrosse dominate the athletic scene at Davidson. Altogether, Davidson fields more than 20 men’s and women’s athletic teams. Nearly one in four Davidson students participates in varsity sports. Looking for an Olympian? Recent graduate Caroline Queen represented the United States in Slalom Kayak at the London 2012 Summer Games.

UNC Charlotte 49ers

If it’s football you want, then it is football you’ll get at UNC Charlotte. The school signed its first-ever recruiting class in early 2012 and built a state-of-the-art stadium on its campus in northeast Charlotte. The team kicked off its first official season on August 31, 2013 with a 52-7 victory over Campbell University. Basketball is also widely followed on campus. The 9,000-seat Halton Arena is located inside the Barnhardt Student Activity Center and is the home to the Charlotte 49ers men’s and women’s teams, which compete in Conference USA. Soccer fanatics know the 49ers know how to score when it counts, as the men’s team advanced to the 2012 NCAA Division One Final Four. Great Lake Living at Lake Norman

Beyond the Views

Lake Norman’s golf courses welcome and then challenge golfers BY MIKE SAVICKI

Great Lake Living at Lake Norman

Standing on the elevated tee box of Cowan’s Ford Country Club’s par 5 15th hole, golfers are afforded not simply a breathtaking view of one of the course’s signature holes, they are also challenged with making the decision either to go for the green in two or lay up short of the babbling brook and stone wall, then chip and put for birdie. Perhaps it is the lure of the tee box which rises 75 feet above the fairway that dictates club selection, or perhaps it is simply the fact that the hole’s layout has been the subject of horror stories for decades that makes golfers play it conservatively, but the 15th is a true test of the risk/reward mentality that can be found on any of the area’s top courses. “Grab your driver and go for it,” says Scott Brannon, A Product of Lake Norman CURRENTS Magazine

Photography courtesy of Birkdale Golf Club

On Course

general manager at Cowan’s Ford. “Like many of the other holes on the course, you might be surprised at how 15 treats you.” Golf at Lake Norman is uniquely challenging. Combining aspects of sandhill golf from the Pinehurst and Coastal Carolina area with hilly and rolling terrain from the Western Carolina mountain courses, there is never a shortage of club selection decisions to be made. In addition to Cowan’s Ford, a walkable (35 percent to 40 percent of golfers regularly walk their rounds at any time) 6,932-yard course that is more than 50 years old, several other private courses are also keeping pace, as they offer golfers the luxury of living and playing in the same neighborhood. The Peninsula Club in Cornelius, NorthStone Country Club in Huntersville and River Run Country Club in Davidson combine golfing excellence with strong neighborhood identity. The Peninsula Club joins Trump National in nearby Iredell

County with unmatched water views, while River Run and NorthStone boast the classic North Carolina look of rolling terrain and tree-lined fairways. Birkdale Golf Club in Huntersville combines the look and feel of a private course with the affordability and appeal of a public facility. The Arnold Palmer-designed public course offers a state-of-the-art, lighted practice facility, including a driving range, short-game area and putting green, as well as group and individual instruction by PGA professionals. It’s convenient to the interstate and within walking distance of the popular Birkdale Village shopping complex. And courses such as Westport Golf Club in Denver have tweaked their layouts and upgraded their facilities to attract new members, while others, such as the community-run Mooresville Golf Course to the north and Pine Island Country Club to the south have either undertaken multimillion dollar renovation projects or undergone major facelifts to create an

entirely new look and feel. Fans of the game don’t have to travel far to see the pros compete. During the first week of May, the Wells Fargo Championship brings the PGA TOUR to Charlotte as top pros compete at Quail Hollow Club. They return to the area in August for the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro. And in October, PGA Champions Tour legends such as Tom Kite, Nick Price and Bernhard Langer compete in Cary at the SAS Championships. “To give you an indication of the level and style of golf lake-area golfers are choosing, in the last year, we have been forced to introduce a waiting list for membership, and that is rare,” says Brannon. “Less than 4 percent of courses across the country are in our situation, so that says a lot for the interest around here.” So grab your driver, tee it up high and swing away. Golf at Lake Norman is full of surprises and challenges if you can just get past the views.
