WHAT EXACTLY IS A SPARK? A spark is a choice to move from inaction to action in a specific area of your life. Often times we put off these choices because making them can make us nervous—a decision to make more room for those who are important to us, or to go for that promotion at work or to start volunteering or to ask that certain someone out on a date. Even when we know a choice is a good one…we don’t know what will happen once we choose. So many times we simply don’t. Yet these are the very choices that shape our lives. When we choose these small sparks they can light up our souls and we get a taste of what it means to be truly alive. But then life settles back down, that light fades and we’re left waiting for another spark. Sometimes we wait for a long time. But what if it didn’t have to be that way? What if sparks became a way of life rather than just a glimpse of life? What might our communities, businesses, and families look like if we didn’t settle for the occasional risk but began intentionally creating more good in our lives? That’s why we created Sparks™: to create as much good with as many people as possible. If you’re reading this you’re about to embark on a journey to practice the sacred art of challenging yourself to take healthy risks. Over the course of the next 5 weeks you’ll take four risks—four “sparks”—inspired by the question, “What’s one risk I can take this week to either make myself a better person or the world a better place.” So we invite you to spark good with us, to dive deeper into the values of risk, generosity, community, progress and even failure. To help you along the way we’ve provided this little guide. The following pages offer tools, tips and hopefully a little inspiration for your upcoming Sparks. Feel free to mark it up. It’s here for you. And so are we.
