OUR PROGRAMS

OUR PROGRAMS SPARC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides transformative performing arts education to over 3,000 students each year. Through Creative Youth Development initiatives, SPARC’s highly skilled teaching artists intentionally integrate the arts with youth development principles. Students discover their creativity and build critical learning and life skills that carry into adulthood. Each SPARC program relies on the financial support of our community. Tuition covers less than half of our program expenses. None of our programs would be possible without donations from our community.

Classes & Workshops SPARC offers programs throughout the year in musical theatre, dance, acting, improv, singing, directing, and more. Students in pre-k through 7th grade participate in classes designed to develop broad performing arts skills. Workshops and master classes for grades 8 through 12 provide smaller class sizes, focused topics, and individualized training.

Productions SPARC produces professionally mounted, audition-based musicals, plays, cabarets, and more throughout the year. Performances are open to the public and provide important

performance training opportunities for acting and musical theatre students as well as technical theatre students.

STAGES Our STAGES in-school program reaches students in 2nd and 3rd grades in Richmond City and Henrico County Public Schools, almost exclusively in low-income neighborhoods. STAGES provides universal access to life-changing performing arts education which these students would not otherwise have the opportunity to explore. STAGES was recognized in 2015 as the Statewide Shining Star award winner for excellence by Virginians for the Arts and the Dominion Energy Foundation.

LIVE ART LIVE ART is a groundbreaking, inclusive arts education program for students of all abilities, culminating in a major public concert that has become one of Richmond’s most anticipated annual performances. Students with a range of disabilities work alongside their typically developing peers in a variety of visual and performing arts classes for nine months. Students build relationships and understanding of one another using SPARC’s unique C.A.R.E. curriculum based on compassion, acceptance, respect, and empathy. LIVE ART was developed not only to profoundly influence the lives of those involved in the program but to inspire the larger community to embrace inclusion.

Right Now New in 2018, Right Now is a middle and high school program for youth in Richmond’s East End which harnesses the power of the performing arts to give voice to young people living in one of Richmond’s most challenged communities. The program, a collaboration with The Robinson Theater Community Arts Center and Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Richmond, gives students tools for self-reflection, self-discovery, and effective problem-solving.

New Voices for the Theater This statewide playwriting competition provides an exciting opportunity for high school students to work closely with professional theatre artists during a summer residency in Richmond. These students, selected out of hundreds of applicants from across the Commonwealth, bring their original one-act plays to life on the stage for the public at the Festival of New Works.

Summer Camps SPARC’s award-winning summer camps are fun for the students, but learning doesn’t cease just because it’s summer. Students participate in age-appropriate theatre exercises, learn and rehearse advanced material, and perform a public showcase or production in front of parents and friends.

Touring Ensemble An audition-based performance troupe, our Touring Ensemble provides committed students a wide variety of valuable performance experiences. Students perform on some of the most public stages in the region providing free performances for the community. All SPARC programs are made possible in part by:
