SPARC 2020-2021 Gratitude Report

Page 1

Dear Friends of SPARC, As we conclude SPARC’s 40th anniversary year, I am enormously grateful for this community. With your support, we look onward and upward to the coming year with renewed optimism and focus. In May, I shared with our Board of Directors my plans to wrap up my tenure at SPARC, as I transition to a new chapter as an independent consultant for nonprofits. The Search Committee, comprised of board and community members, is conducting a national search to identify my successor; in the meantime, I continue to serve SPARC and ensure a smooth transition. In my 12 years at SPARC, we have collectively worked to reimagine and transform the way SPARC serves the community, and the promise is bright of an even better tomorrow. I know you will join me in welcoming the new Executive Director, who will no doubt build upon the success of SPARC’s inspirational work. SPARC’s incredibly committed staff is seasoned and ready to lead SPARC’s next chapter. Evelyn Francis, Director of Programs, and Barbara Wells, Director of Development, provide consistency in senior leadership. The outstanding programs team, faculty, development team, and more have been hard at work throughout the pandemic, adapting with new ways of accomplishing SPARC’s vital work and implementing these strategies with expertise and grace. Please look at the staff list included herein and thank a staff member for their contributions to our community! SPARC’s vital commitment to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion was among the highlights of the 2020-2021 year. To better focus our efforts, SPARC established an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Commission, led by a collaborative group of our students, faculty, parents, and staff. Their strategic recommendations will help to shape a more equitable future for the SPARC community, as we work to eliminate barriers and increase access to all aspects our work. As I reflect back on my time here at SPARC, I am humbled by the talent and perseverance demonstrated by all those who helped to make the past year possible. I know that with your ongoing support, SPARC will continue to accomplish astonishing things in the lives of young people. With gratitude,

Ryan Ripperton Executive Director

Discover your shine. It isn’t just a message to our students – it’s a recognition that, in working together in support of SPARC’s exemplary programs, all of us are finding our own light and using it to make the world a better place for the next generation.

OUR PROGRAMS Following a hiatus in programming from March-August 2020, we were thrilled to resume programming in September of 2020, keeping public health guidance at the center of all our work. The community rallied to help us invest in video technology to establish a virtual classroom in the Sara Belle November Educational Theater at SPARC and erect a new training and performance structure in our back lot: the Bill Talley Ford Outdoor Classroom. Our Training Classes and Workshops provided a full roster of virtual and outdoor classes, plus two new models of work this year and a full range of Technical Theater classes. Pop-Ups, in-person one-time workshops held in SPARC’s outdoor classroom for students in grades Pre-K–12, were wildly popular. SPARC Delivered brought in-person socially distanced activities to backyards, driveways, parking lots, and neighborhood parks throughout Richmond. These new models of work and classes helped us expand our reach during another tough year for young people and their families. Spectrum, SPARC’s theater program for high school LGBTQ+ youth and allies, in partnership with Richmond Triangle Players and The Conciliation Lab, held a virtual Town Hall in December of 2020 where students facilitated a conversation about the impact of the pandemic on their lives. In the spring of 2021, youth devised an original work that examined human connection in the virtual production, “Us and Them.” SPARC Productions and Performances relaunched after an abrupt halt at the beginning of 2020. In the fall of 2020, SPARC hosted a virtual play festival with two plays specifically written and designed to be performed on Zoom by SPARC students. In the spring, a radio play based on Hitchcock’s “39 Steps” was taken on by the young people who provided voice acting and foley artistry (live sound effects). An encore presentation of this performance was aired on Virginia Public Media radio!

In summer 2021, SPARC was able to host our first in-person production since early 2020, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” which held rehearsals and performances in SPARC’s Bill Talley Ford Outdoor Classroom. And finally, SPARC’s Touring Ensemble for students in grades 8-12, met outdoors weekly to rehearse in preparation for local events including the Richmond Christmas Parade. FIRE (Friends Igniting Real Experiences), SPARC’s youth-founded and youth-led high school outreach group, organized an outdoor festival for youth and families this past summer. This brought our community back to SPARC for games, activities, balloon fights, and a performance by the Touring Ensemble. Live Art, our groundbreaking arts program for youth with and without disabilities, was in full swing in the outdoor classroom for the full year. Live Art is an expression of SPARC’s commitment to accessibility, creating a culture of artistic exploration rooted in compassion, acceptance, respect, and empathy. As a final public sharing in the midst of the pandemic, filmmaker Martin Montgomery and his team created a short documentary of each class with a colorful grand finale with all of the students and teaching artists. Youth leadership at SPARC began expanding this year due to the amazing research led by the IYL of SPARC (Igniting Youth Leadership) and the continued dedication of FIRE youth leaders. Over the course of several months, IYL interviewed participants from all of SPARC’s programs in search of feedback about the future of youth leadership and initiatives at SPARC. IYL developed four recommendations which we plan to implement: • Expand the types of performing arts, technical theater, and theater management offerings • Ensure that all programs and projects are accessible and inclusive • Provide more opportunities within programs for youth leadership • Establish a Youth Advisory Council for current students New Voices for the Theater, Stages, and many of our school and community partnerships were put on hold while awaiting progress with the pandemic. We are pleased that a return to programming has begun in 2021-2022 for young people throughout Richmond and beyond.

Fiscal Year 2021 (Sept. 1, 2020 – Aug. 31, 2021) continued to be a roller coaster financially, as the COVID-19 pandemic caused massive shifts in SPARC’s financial projections. The significant surplus of revenues over expenses shown here is a direct offset to a corresponding loss in the previous year’s financials. The receipt and recognition of Payroll Protection Program forgivable loans and myriad other stimulus and recovery programs effectively “filled in the hole” caused by the catastrophic cancellation and closure of all SPARC activities in the final 5 ½ months of the previous fiscal year. The data shown here summarize the unaudited financial reports for the year ended August 31, 2021. Audited financial statements and tax returns are available upon request, and on demand at
