PERFORMING ARTS MONTREAL September — October
MARÍA PAGES COMPANY
The King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center at NYU welcomes La Phármaco Dance Company to take part in the program “Proximidades, Límites, Distancias” this September. According to its founding principles to address dance as a total scenic ceremony in which the body is the center of passage, on September 27, award-winning artistic director Luz Arcas will present a choreographic proposal that has been influenced by her newest creation, Kaspar Hauser: The Orphan of Europe (production premiered in Madrid in March 2016). After the performance and throughout the day on September 28th, La Phármaco will participate in a discussion with other Latin American stage artists, addressing from a broad perspective contemporary stage practices.
Accompanied by eight dancers and seven musicians performing live, María Pages stands out once again as an iconic figure of Flamenco. From the tale of the sultry gypsy with a fateful destiny emerges a multifaceted, sincere and forceful woman. In ten scenes sculpted by lighting, she sketches a portrait of the eternal female free of prejudice and conventions, endowed with the voice of all women. Songs are sung by two women, words are chanted by all in unison and poems by female writers are recited in different languages.
