No.10 – April 2012
Notices and Forthcoming Events March to the 70th The year beginning 1st September 2012 marks the commencement of the 69th anniversary year of the landings in Normandy. It is the beginning of the 4th year of the five year project “March to the 70th”. Subsequently, from that day on, the name of the project will change to “Prelude to the 70th” and the run-in to the 70th anniversary year will begin. In order to manage this it will be split into two stages; Year 4 will be known as “Prelude to the 70th and Year 5 as “Countdown to Normandy.” Year 1 to Year 3 has seen a number of things put in place. They include the five year Lapel Badge initiative which has proved very popular and other Public Relations exercises. The collections programme has continued apace and a coach party is returning to Normandy from the 4th to the 9th June inclusive. It has always been considered that Year 3 would be problematical owing to competition from the Diamond Jubilee events. However, this does not seem to be the case as the coach to Normandy is full. Next will be Year 4. With the Battle of Normandy finishing on the 1st August 1944, the 69th anniversary year of the landings commences as from then. However in order to simplify matters, Year 4 will actually commence as and from the 1st September 2012. It will be an iconic year for Norwich Branch. A Branch party will return to Normandy and a collections programme will be maintained. It will also be the year during which the Branch will immediately commence putting together it’s programme for the final fifth year of the March to the 70th project, not just for those able to make the return to Normandy to take part in the celebrations there, but for those who remain here in the U.K as well. and the Branch will enter a float in the Lord Mayor's procession organised by Mrs Sally Brookes, granddaughter of Len Fox. Financial help and assistance will be needed and a general appeal for funds will take place during this year both through the media and by means of the internet. For those who may consider that it is too early to begin all this, it can never be too early, rather that than too late. As far as it is presently known, Year 5 could financially take care of itself. Comment concerning this will be able to be made as and when it is known what the national programme is to be. Norwich branch will have its own programme of events and will, as ever, cooperate with the National Council during this period. What ever happens, Norwich Branch members will be kept fully in the picture. Together with help and assistance from friends and supporters, Year 5 will become one to remember for ever. Whitehall 2012: The annual NVA parade at the Cenotaph Whitehall, scheduled for 24th June 2012, is CANCELLED. This is no fault of the National Council but of the authorities in London, and it applies to other formations also. There will be no other date for Whitehall this year. Those of you who have already paid will be repaid by Kitty. Collections 2012: We are in URGENT need of new volunteers to join the Street collections programme. All monies collected are for the use of the membership as a whole. If you haven't collected before and wish to help, contact Sarah McAllister. The commitment is no more than a few hours each year. May 5th is the date of the Norwich City Street collection. It is intended to make a big thing of this in order to collect as much as possible. Anybody willing to collect should report to the Forum from 9.30am onwards, where you will be issued with a collecting box and a copy of the authority to collect. You will then be allocated an area in which to collect. You may stay as long as you wish and then report back to the Forum. Please be as decorative as you can, Blazers, badges etc. The more you stand out, the more you collect. Also booked for May are the Coop Stores Carlton Colville and Asda Stores Lowestoft, both organized by Peter Hemp, and Roy’s of Wroxham. On the 2nd June there is a collection at Sainsbury’s William Frost Way Norwich. Other collections in hand are:- in July, Roy’s Magdalen Street Norwich; in August, a further Asda Stores Lowestoft and in October, Morrisons Supermarket Norwich. Quite a busy time ahead. Any queries and
information and offers of help, contact Sarah. Forthcoming Events:
