Aqua Blu Boutique Hotel & Spa, Kos | CONTEMPORARY | This contemporary boutique hotel takes its architectural and design pointers from the ancient Greek Dodecanese island colours and culture. It has the feel of both a beach and urban hotel reflecting its artful location between Lambi Beach and Kos Town. Interior design by Dimitris Papanastasiou offers both a modernity and a strong sense of place. All around the contemporary building of stone, steel and glass are bright blue pools and water features. Each suite has a balcony or terrace overlooking the sea and some have private pools, so that guests feel the presence of the Aegean throughout. Stay: 7 nights Bed & Breakfast, departing 2 Oct ‘13 from Manchester. From £755 per person*. Saving up to £173 per couple.

Grand Yazici Boutique Hotel, Turkey | LUXURY BOUTIQUE | Vibrant splashes of colour set against a backdrop of contemporary white décor emanate throughout the hotel interiors. Bright, bold furniture in the hotel reception and guest rooms create a truly artistic feel. The wow factor feature at the heart of this luxury boutique hotel is the sleek infinity pool which overlooks the entire city of Bodrum and across the Aegean Sea to Kos. Guests can take in the metropolis from the calm oasis fringed with loungers and relaxing day beds. The local flora and fauna is represented in these shades with the endless green of the pine forests and the blue Aegean Sea. Stay: 7 nights Bed & Breakfast, departing 30 May ‘13 from London Gatwick. From £899 per person*. Saving up to £96 per couple.

Four Seasons Marrakech

Morocco

IBIZA GRAN HOTEL Ibiza

| PALATIAL OPULENCE |

| ULTRA MODERN |

Marrakech is well known for its explosion in stunning riad hotels and historic classics, so for a world-renowned hotel company like the Four Seasons Resorts to make an impact in 2011, architects Hill Glazier Architects (original concept) and Didier Lefort Architects had to pull out all the stops. Inspired by the nearby Medina, its main buildings evoke a Moorish palace surrounded by pavilions; guest rooms are reached via arcades, courtyards and stairways, similar to traditional riads, yet in a thoroughly modern style. Palm trees and lush gardens, swimming and reflecting pools, fountains and floating pavilions feature throughout with beautiful cabanas and loungers for guests to unwind.

Befitting an island known for its hedonistic lifestyle and heightened awareness of the latest trend in fashion, music, art and design, Ibiza Gran Hotel pushes the boat out on all fronts. With a spectacular location around Ibiza Town marina with views over the Old Town, this ultra modern hotel is the work of Carlos de Benito, Julian Colmenares and Juan Martin-Baranda. The suites, all facing the sea and the sun, are configured as imaginary ship cabins anchored in the bay. Interiors by Toni Esteva and his team were influenced by Ibiza’s sea, land, life, air and sky. Twenty-eight artists were invited to create ‘site-specific’ pieces which confound and amuse guests round every corner.

Jumeirah Port Soller Hotel & Spa, Majorca | TIMELESS | The architecture and design of Jumeirah’s first resort in Europe is inspired by the Balearic isle. Buildings are integrated into the gradient of the mountain using natural stone, local materials and low buildings. German design company Peter Silling and Associates have used olive and pine woods along with mosaics in vibrant colors and textiles in whites and earthy shades. Most of the guest rooms have beds oriented to the views and there is a strong visual connection with the outside. A timeless design has been sought so that rooms are not tied to a particular fashion trend. An art collection, commissioned to local artists, is made of unique pieces that connect the rooms to the landscape.

Cascade Wellness & Lifestyle Resort, Algarve | MOORISH DESIGN | Three leading architects created this clifftop hotel near the historic city of Lagos. João Laranjo, based in Portimão provided the local colour, reflecting the traditions of the rich Algarve heritage. Architect Juan Bent of BB Arquitectos in Mallorca added a more Mediterranean perspective, whilst the rooms were the work of leading international architect, Wolfgang Neumayer. The hotel’s four wings are inspired by the journeys of Henry the Navigator through the four continents of Africa, Asia, South America and Europe. Guest rooms range from warm muted tones of Africa’s savannah to bright splashes of colour that pay tribute to South America’s vibrant culture. Stay: 7 nights Bed & Breakfast, departing 2 Aug ‘13

from London Gatwick. From £3,129 per family of 3*. Saving up to £347 per family of 3.

Quinta da Casa Branca, Madeira | AWARD WINNING MINIMALISM | The juxtaposition of avant-garde design hotel and lush botanical garden that dates back to the mid-19th century, makes Quinta Da Casa Branca Hotel an architectural gem. Local architect João Favila Menezes was inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright. To fully appreciate the pure innovation behind the design, the best example is the terrace behind the reception, a large cube structure of glass and steel, which offers a direct view to the ocean and the hills above the city. With his colleagues, Teresa Ferreira and Luis Rosário, João Favila Menezes won the prestigious City of Funchal Architecture Prize. All 43 rooms feature private terraces opening onto the lush botanical garden with trees and plants imported from around the world. Near the premium rooms is a gravelled path bordered by enormous Indian Rubber Trees, Mexican Bread Fruit and Bamboo. Guests love the Bougainvillea framing the heated swimming pool. If you love gardens and thoughtful design, this is the hotel for you. Stay: 7 nights Bed & Breakfast, departing 4 Nov ‘13 from Manchester. From £719 per person*. Saving up to £162 per couple.

Grand Velas Riviera Maya Mexico | PERFECT ZEN | Opened in 2008, this luxurious all-inclusive hotel is one of the most distinguished resorts on the Riviera Maya. Set on over 80 acres of protected mangroves, jungle and freshwater wells known locally as ‘cenotes’, the resort is split into three unique areas, each with its own ambiance. The Zen Grand section is immersed in the natural environment of the Mayan jungle with elegantly exotic suites with private terraces. The family-friendly Ambassador section has suites arranged around the main infinity pool and the exclusive Grand Class section has vast ocean front suites with exquisite Mexican artwork and spacious lounge areas. Stay: 7 nights All Inclusive in Zen Grand Suite departing 2 Feb ‘14 from London Gatwick. From £2,125* per person. Saving up to £1,261 per couple.

Famed for its glorious year-round sunshine, Tenerife is beloved by many UK travellers as a convenient short-haul tropic, boasting stunning colonial towns, exotic banana plantations and the impressive Mount Teide volcano. It’s also a place where you can find real luxury with a wealth of five star hotels to choose from on the golden coast of Costa Adeje. It’s the northern, greener sweep of Tenerife where you’ll find the genuine local culture. The attractive capital Santa Cruz is well worth exploring with its striking opera house and Tenerife Espacio de las Artes for thought provoking art.

Catch the tram from Santa Cruz to the beautifully preserved colonial city of La Laguna with its fine Canarian architecture, imposing cathedral and charming tapas bars. Nearby Ananga National Park is the perfect place for a gentle or more challenging walk or cycle. Its Path of Senses encourages visitors to smell and touch the vegetation.

through. But of course Tenerife’s most impressive sight is it’s lunar-esque lava fields leading to Mount Teide where you can catch the cable car for panoramic views. Stay until night fall and with no light pollution, you’ll spot constellations, shooting stars and the Milky Way.

It’s the northern, greener sweep of Tenerife where you’ll find the genuine local culture

Another must see is the magical colonial town of Garachico with its salt-water pools created out of lava, pretty historic streets with interesting shops like the cavernous Puerto de Garachico selling everything from model boats to lava clocks.

Tenerife’s answer to Machu Picchu is the ancient village of Masca, set in a massive ravine. From here you can catch a boat to see Los Gigantes, a series of stunning cliffs. The ‘Wind Caves’ are also close by, recognised as the largest lava tubes in the world which visitors can walk

Children love a trip to the seaside town of Puerto de la Cruz to explore Loro Park with its Parrots, Penguins and Orcas. Another great family day out is the Thaithemed Siam Park, the largest waterpark in Europe which now has VIP villas ideal for larger groups. And of course with its unique choice of golden sand beaches, with grains blown over from the Sahara, or sparkling black volcanic sands, there are plenty of idyllic beaches to relax on.

This stunningly unique spa is set amongst St Lucia’s precious rainforest with treatments carried out in artful tree houses on stilts. Enter through the enchanting candlelit wicker walkway and experience divine all-natural treatments with local bananas, coconut, aloe vera and rich cocoa butter.

The Insider’s Guide

General Manager Europe (Ex Italy) & Strategic Purchasing

Ricky is our expert on Crete. Having lived in the Greek Islands, he returns to Crete every year, to secure the best luxury hotels and value added offers for you. We asked him to divulge some of his insider secrets about Crete and his top tips for the perfect luxury holiday on this magical island. Crete is the largest of the Greek islands (260km by 56km) and is regarded as the leading destination when it comes to luxury hotels in the Mediterranean. This year witness the Centenary of Crete’s unification with Greece, with many locals still proudly claiming themselves Cretan first and foremost and secondly Greek. Over many centuries the Cretans have been occupied and ruled by many different civilisations. They remain tough yet some of the most hospitable people you will ever meet and rightly proud of their beautiful home.

When to go

What to eat

Where to spend an evening

The summer months are the most popular and the hottest. If you’re not restricted to school holidays, visit during May or September for peace and quiet and warm sunny weather.

The Cretan traditional diet is known as one of the healthiest in the world using wild herbs, greens and an endless supply of olive oil. Try dakos, a dried bread topped with grated tomato, olive oil, cheese and oregano. You cannot visit Crete without trying a glass of raki. Ask for ‘red’ raki, which is slightly smoother than the clear variety.

Agios Nikolaos has an abundance of restaurants overlooking the waterfront and a cosmopolitan feel in the evenings when the bars come alive. Elounda, known as the Riviera of Crete, and the small nearby village of Plaka have a good choice of tavernas perfect for an evening bite to eat and a stroll.

Currency and value With the Euro currently worth about 0.87 GB Pounds, a three-course meal in a local tavern costs approximately €30.00 (£26.05) plus drinks, a coffee €4.00 (£3.47), a cocktail €7.00 (£6.08) and a beer €4.00 (£3.47).

What to see The ancient Palace of Minos at Knossos has the largest Bronze Age architectural site on the island. Spinalonga, made famous in recent times as the backdrop to the Victoria Hislop novel, ‘The Island’, is a former Leper colony and definitely worth a visit. There are many photo opportunities when you drive inland to the Lassithi Plateau, home to the legendary Dikte cave where Zeus, father of the gods, is said to have been born.

Where to take the children It’s well worth making the effort to take children to some of the islands ancient wonders and the Natural History Museum of Crete. For something more high spirited, Acqua Plus is one of Crete’s biggest water parks.

Where to swim The West of Crete and some rural areas in the south have some of the best beaches. Elounda has a small beach near the harbour but in general all of the hotels have their own bathing areas. Domes of Elounda and Aquila Elounda Village have their own exclusive beaches.

Images clockwise from top left: Ancient Palace of Minos at Knossos. Agios Nikolaos coastline. Aerial View of Spinalonga.

My husband and I are looking for a holiday in the Greek Islands towards the end of May or possibly early June, in a secluded and peaceful location. Our daughter, son-in-law and young granddaughter are thinking of coming along too, so we need a hotel that’s good for all the family with babysitting and children’s club facilities. We’d also like to have rooms close together.

Have a question you want answered?

Where to go for luxury all-inclusive?

From Elizabeth Walker, Surrey

We’re waiting until the October half term to go on a long-haul family holiday. We want this to be a real treat for ourselves and our son who is 8. We’re happy to go all-inclusive so long as it’s five-star and the resort has good quality dining with more than a couple of restaurants to choose from. The more activities and entertainment the better to amuse my son, plus my husband is a big tennis fan.

Answer from Debby Hayley, Sovereign Travel Advisor

I can highly recommend Daios Cove Luxury Resort & Villas in Crete. The hotel is located in a private cove with its own sand beach, so nearly all of the rooms offer stunning sea views. The infinity pool overlooks the sea with a pool bar and a special reserved area for children. Daios Kid’s Club and crèche is run by UK qualified staff and there are children’s menus in the restaurants, which would be perfect for your granddaughter. We can also request rooms next to each other or you could book a two or three-bedroom family villa with a private pool. Plus, as a Sovereign guest you will also receive a complimentary Apivita beauty gift set and one breakfast in bed.

Mexico is a great time for an October family holiday as its still sunny and warm. Why not try the Riviera Maya with its long sandy beaches and close proximity to the Mayan ruins. Barcelo Maya Palace Deluxe is a stylish, five-star all-inclusive hotel right on the beach. There are six restaurants to choose from, daily activities and a kids club for ages 4 to 12. Of the three swimming pools, there’s an adults only pool and a children’s pool with waterslides plus, your husband will be occupied with a choice of seven floodlit tennis courts.
