This Market Bag is a variation of the "BYOB 2.0 - Bring Your Own Bag!" pattern, and was originally worked alongside a series of Tutorial / Knit-along blogposts. Follow the posts as you work this pattern for additional information and ideas for options such as stitch choices and handle variations. The following links are also included in the main pattern instructions. The BYOB Market Bag is a slightly simplified version of the original pattern as it omits the shaping of the base and is worked in a single color. It features a long central openwork panel to give extra flexibility and two shoulder-length handles with a button detail. The handles can be left as plain knitted straps or could be backed with fabric or woven bands for extra strength.

MATERIALS:

Yarn: Lily "Sugar N Cream", 100% cotton, 120 yds/109m:2.5 oz/70.9gm regular-sized ball. (equiv to 168 yds/154m:3.5 oz/100gm) in Col #00010 Yellow x 4 balls. [NB: The sample bag used 3 balls of yarn but with little to spare. Purchase or hold a 4th ball in case you require a little more.] Actual amt of yarn used in bag as shown: 7.25 oz/205gm, or 350 yds/320m. NB: The amt of yarn to be used in this project will vary according to the yarn used, finished size etc. Please use these amts as a general guideline for the quantities rqd. Preferably pre-wash your yarns as cotton yarns have a tendency to shed color when first washed. Yarn substitutions: The bags need to be worked fairly firmly in order to keep their shape well. If substituting another yarn, select one with 100% natural fibre content and a recommended ball band gauge of approx 20 sts/26 rows:4 ins/10cm using US #7/4.5mm. Needles: US #6/4.0mm circ ndls in lengths 24 ins/60cm & 32 ins/80cm, or a set of 4 or 5 long dpn's. US #9/5.5mm circ ndls in length 24 ins/60cm, or a set of 4 or 5 long dpn's. Spare ndl in size US #6/4.0mm or smaller. Gauge: 18 sts/32 rows:4 ins/10cm in Seed St using US #6/4.0mm ndls. NB: Adjust ndl size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge. The bag needs to be worked reasonably tightly so that it holds its shape well. Go down a ndl size or two if you tend to knit loosely. BYOB MARKET BAG                                                                                                                      W yndlestraw Designs Handles (Contd):

Ret the 2nd set of 11 sts to the ndls and join in a new yarn end. Rep from * to ** to work this strap in the same way as the 1st. Cont until this strap meas 8 ins/20cm. Place a marker at either end of the row. Work a further 1 in/2.5 cm and BO all sts, leaving a long tail of about ½ yd (50cm) for finishing.

Joining the handle straps: Position the button tab over the strap just worked, matching the markers. Sew around the button tab, bringing the yarn through all the layers to secure well. Take the yarn end to the WS and loosely oversew the open edge. Thread the yarn through between the layers to the button position and secure the button in place. Finish the yarn end off. Make a 2nd handle on the other side to match the first.

FINISHING: Sew in all remaining ends neatly on the wrong side, making sure to secure them well, then block into shape. To launder at a later date, turn inside out and either hand wash in warm water, or put the BYOB Market Bag into a mesh bag and machine wash using the gentle cycle. If the bag is slightly stretched, tumble dry on low briefly to get back into shape. Lay the bag out flat to dry. ¦ © MOIRA RAVENSCROFT, 2013 NB: All my patterns are test-knitted and checked before publishing, but errors do, inevitably, creep in from time to time.
