For engineer turned explorer Albert Lin, it’s

Big data for a bigger purpose Albert Yu-Min Lin came to the University of California, San Diego to study engineering because he wanted to do “something hard.” Little did he know that would lead him to something much more difficult—trying to solve a centuries-old mystery. He swapped the title “engineer” for “explorer” by scouring the remote reaches of Mongolia for Genghis Khan’s lost tomb. Using data from groundpenetrating radar, remote sensors and satellite imagery, he searched underground without disturbing the natural environment or indigenous culture. “It’s not technology for technology’s sake,” Albert says. “It’s about putting data together to ask the right questions.” Now an entreprenuer and a researcher at UC San Diego, he obliterates traditional scientific boundaries to probe how we use technology to answer those questions. He mobilizes a legion of citizen scientists to sift through mountains of data, and bring meaning to them. From chaos, he creates connections. UC San Diego attracts and cultivates such risk-takers and innovators—explorers of our universe, our world and our humanity. Learn more at ucsd.edu.

SHIRTS DESIGNED TO BE WORN UNTUCKED.

®2011

We started UNTUCKit because we had trouble finding shirts that looked good untucked. It’s a deceptively difficult look to get right. Shirts just aren’t designed that way. So we decided to make a better shirt for the untucked man. A casual shirt fit for comfort, not convention, and designed to fall at the perfect length.

Gary’s Greeting

The Ultimate Team Sport (30 years ago!). It also explains why I enjoy this business so much and why in particular I love playing on the best Team in the world at Southwest Airlines. It didn’t take me long after assuming the role of CEO 12 years ago to fully appreciate how much I would depend on those around me in order for our Team to be successful. I’m not a Pilot, I don’t know how to fix mechanical issues, and I could name a number of other functions that are beyond my skill set. But that’s OK—my Teammates are pros at their positions. I know we all play our roles on

the Team for a common goal: to safely deliver you to your destination, Ontime, with your bag, and with a smile. Observe your flight. It’s one of the nearly 4,000 we will operate today in a network that includes 97 destinations across the United States and seven additional countries. Look outside your window when you land and watch the sequence of events that takes place as we unload your bags, provision the aircraft, refuel, deplane, load another set of bags, and welcome onboard a new plane full of Customers. It’s fascinating— much like watching your favorite sports team brilliantly execute a play on the field. You can quickly gain an appreciation for why the Team concept is so important, not only to what we do but also to how we do it. Southwest Airlines is often imitated, but we have never been duplicated. Our competitors can buy similar airplanes and serve the same airports, but they cannot match our People, they cannot match our Culture, and they cannot match the Teamwork we display in fulfilling our Purpose—to connect you to the important moments in your life with friendly, reliable, low-fare air travel. Thanks for allowing our Team to serve you today!

Gary Kelly Chairman, President, and CEO Southwest Airlines

PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHEN KELLER

Like many of you, I’m a sports enthusiast. Growing up, I loved playing just about anything—from basketball to football to golf and everything in between. I was even fortunate enough to play a year of college football. There are so many life lessons and values that I learned playing sports that serve me well to this day. Chief among them is the importance of Teamwork. I’ve always maintained that working for an airline is the ultimate Team sport, so it’s no coincidence that I found my way to the industry early in my career

“Stay true to yourself and always remain focused.” —SHANNON R. WILSON, OWNER /STYLIST, SASSI ATTRACTIONS Shannon R. Wilson is no stranger to Customer Service, so it makes sense that she has flown Southwest Airlines for almost a decade. A business owner and hair stylist in Paincourtville, Louisiana, Shannon always goes the extra mile for her Customers. Because her husband works in Texas, she flies from Houston to New Orleans every Thursday to style her clients before returning on Sunday. But Shannon doesn’t go alone—she has her favorite travel Companion, her 3-year-old son, Landon, by her side. Landon has already logged more than 200 Southwest flights, meaning he and Shannon are in the running for most well-traveled mother/son duo in Southwest history. —Derek K. Without knowing it, flight attendant Michael Broadhead made a very stressful event for my son much less so. On our flight from Sacramento to Raleigh-Durham, he stopped by our row and gave my kids information about the airplane—things like how many seats it had and how to tell the models apart. Here’s the part that made this such a big deal: One of my sons deals with debilitating anxiety as part of his daily walk with autism. Only

INDESTRUCTIBLE HEART

My wife, our young daughter, and I were flying from Louisville, Kentucky, to Reno, Nevada, with a layover in Las Vegas. When we landed in Vegas, we turned on our phones only to learn that our home had been destroyed in a storm. My daughter and wife began to cry while I tried to return calls from the police, the fire department, and the city engineer. The flight crew of Nigel George, Amy Olmedo, and Teri Queen were the most gracious, understanding, and thoughtful

Dear Southwest,

a parent could see his struggle, but his stress and anxiety levels were off the charts. Spending hours on a plane is hard on anyone, but for a 10-year-old on the autism spectrum, it can be torture. Michael took the time to give my son information that comforted him to the point where he actually enjoyed the flight. During our layover in Denver, Michael borrowed the stuffed animals my boys had been clinging to, brought them to the cockpit, and took a picture of them. He then explained the aircraft’s safety features and how the pilot used them to do his job. Without knowing it, Michael helped a scared little boy have a good day. Any parent with a child who struggles like mine will understand just how big of a deal that really is. —James Bass

bunch one could have asked for. One held my daughter (which I can never repay) while another told my wife that they would do anything we needed to get back home. As a police officer, I know that it can be difficult to go on without knowing how a specific situation worked out. Well, we will rebuild, and we are taking it one day at a time. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart. —David Hamblin THE THREE TR AVELTEERS!

The night after Christmas my flight was cancelled around midnight due to tornadoes near Dallas. Thinking this might happen, I had booked a ticket out of Midway the next morning, but I was now looking at a long winter’s night in the airport. I walked to the food court and began reading, finding comfort in sharing space with others in the same situation. After 10 minutes, I looked up and saw no one else around. Eventually, I joined several people sitting in one area in Terminal B and asked two gentlemen—culture engagement specialist Bryce Knepp and customer relations/

F1_YMOD_kt.indd 24

Rapid Rewards representative Danny Canary—if they would wake me up if I fell asleep. They asked me to join them, got me a sandwich, and walked with me back to Terminal A after realizing we were all headed to Dallas. Danny and Bryce were so gracious and caring and made a true difference that lonely night. I will always be grateful for their kind generosity, and I wouldn’t realize for weeks that my ticket home had actually been refunded. I’ll never forget turning to look at Danny and Bryce at 3 a.m. and getting the thumbs-up sign from Danny, who I thought was asleep. It warms my heart to think of it. —Cynthia Pietrzak LOST: ONE DAD

For years, my 90-year-old father has traveled from Sacramento to Phoenix a few times a year, and I have always booked him on a nonstop flight. On a recent trip, I needed to change the flight, which resulted in putting him on one that stopped in Ontario, California, before continuing to Phoenix. My dad and I apparently miscommunicated

because when the plane landed in Ontario, he got off, thinking he was in Phoenix. He called my sister-in-law to ask her to pick him up and then turned off his phone. My sister-in-law and I determined that he had mistakenly gotten off the plane, but we had no way to communicate with him. I called Southwest and was connected with customer representative Melissa Ryan, who called Ontario to have someone look for him. In less than 30 minutes, customer service supervisor Rumi Endo called to say she had found my dad waiting at the arrival curb, explained things to him, and gotten him back on his flight to Phoenix. I could not thank her enough. Her response was, “It’s really fun when I can help people like you and your dad. Your dad is really sweet.” Melissa was the perfect professional who knew what to do and made it happen right away. Rumi was the hero who dropped what she was doing, quickly found my dad, and got him back on his flight—all while making it seem like it was no big deal. I can’t thank you enough. —Kirk Koning

Dear Reader,

Non-divers don’t believe me when I tell them this, but fellow scuba enthusiasts will back me up: The scariest part of diving is the time before you go under. You bob on the opaque waves, held up by your buoyancy vest, with your legs dangling down in the dark to be sniffed at and possibly bitten by who knows what. It seems an eternity before the divemaster finally gives the signal to submerge. Then you press the release valve on your vest … and suddenly you’re a space lander descending through the atmosphere of another—strangely familiar—planet. This issue shows the many ways to play in that world (page 46). People who don’t dive inevitably ask, “Have you seen sharks?” When you say yes, they look satisfyingly alarmed. But even the largest sharks seem way less scary underwater than a menacing fin on the surface. Down below, sharks tend to give your neoprene-clad, goggleeyed, bubbling body a look that says, That sure looks unappetizing. Other creatures seem to see you less as a threat than an irrelevance. Jellyfish hover undisturbed, not bothering to sting. An octopus peers out from a hole in the coral reef and unfolds a few legs. A giant sea turtle pumps slowly by on its long, determined mission. Here, deep, you can imagine what our distant ancestors may have felt when they were scurrying unimportantly on the reptilian planet. No, I’ve rarely been scared as much underwater as when I’ve waited on the surface for what was to come. It’s the same feeling you get before you start a job or get married or watch a new president get elected. The best thing to do in such times, I believe, is to hit the release valve and welcome whatever happens next.

It’s rare to hear about a love story that starts on an airplane. When single, we all secretly wish that the romance of meeting someone while traveling just might happen to us.

ennie Bowen Steed’s idea of finding love changed on a flight when she saw an ad for It’s Just Lunch, a personalized matchmaking service for busy professionals. Jennie had been divorced for two years, and

her time was focused on her career & family. The ad read like a good friend who could introduce her to single, professional men she wouldn’t have the opportunity to meet on her own. Today, Bowen Steed is married to

Where were you at in your life when you decided to join IJL?

grEg:

I’d been divorced for about two years, and it was a hectic time career wise. My company was in a transitional phase, and it demanded a lot of my time and effort, so I didn’t have time for much else.

JENNIE: I’d also been divorced about two years. Being a single mom and working full-time, it wasn’t a huge priority of mine to go out and do the legwork it took to meet someone; it felt like having another job, and I didn’t have time for that.

Favorite first date memories?

grEg: I was attracted to her right away. On the second date there was a real chemistry. Then it evolved very, very quickly. JENNIE:

When Greg and I started talking, I discovered we had similar careers. I remember the conversation was so easy and comfortable. When I shared my date feedback with my IJL matchmaker, I let her know that Greg and I had made arrangements to attend a big award dinner at his country club. The minute I walked in, I knew he was a consummate gentleman. I felt so cared for. He was attentive and made sure I was introduced to everyone.

How did IJL compare to your online dating experience?

grEg: Online dating isn’t easy, it’s work. I’ve got a full-time career; I didn’t need another job. With IJL they did everything for me. You’re busy with your career and everything else going on – IJL was just easier. The caliber of matches was much higher. JENNIE: I saw an ad for IJL on a flight and was contemplating whether I was interested when someone close to me mentioned it as an option. I thought

I’d try it because it sounded like having friends who could interview people for you so when you went on a date you would know there’s something about the two of you that someone thought would be a good fit.

What would you tell a friend who was interested in IJL but was tentative about making the investment?

What's the most challenging part of working remotely from a dating perspective?

6 in 10 people say not meeting people as often

grEg:

At the end of the day what is your end goal? Then I’d ask, what’s the cost of being happy worth to you? The kinds of people who choose IJL aren’t fooling around. It’s not someone on the Internet just looking to meet a ton of people and date up a storm. It was definitely worth it for me.

Best part about dating thru IJL?

grEg: Besides choosing all my matches I would say the scheduling of my dates. They call you and ask what your schedule is like, so you don’t have to worry about it. If I said I was available Wednesday or Thursday this week and Sunday next week they would find a way to fit dating into my schedule. What sort of activities did you enjoy while you were dating?

JENNIE: We love to be outside. I also love going to places I’ve never been before. He loves to drive and take me places – whether that’s going to the beach or going to the mountains or some random lake that’s hidden away. How has your life changed since you met?

grEg: It is totally different than it was. I would say that there was a point in time when I felt a little bit lost. Everything has completely turned around. Every day I wake up, and I enjoy the day. I enjoy being around her, the kids, and our home. Life is just better. It’s Just Lunch has been matching busy singles since 1991. Dear Editor,

Thank you to Tony Rehagen for the article “One Giant Leap Through Time” [March 2016] about the James Webb Space Telescope. I don’t expect much from in-flight magazines: 99 percent of the time they bore me out of my mind. This article was a very happy exception. Not only was it engaging, I actually learned something from it—I’m a physicist, but I don’t keep track of astrophysics and cosmology as much I should—and there were numbers there and helpful drawings! This is more than one can say about most popular science articles, and I don’t mean just popular science articles in in-flight magazines. Great job, and thanks again!

IN SO MANY WORDS

I found myself mesmerized by your article about 30 Million Words [December 2015]. My son had eardrum surgery this past summer at 3 years old. Initially we noticed his language skills were lacking and he had coordination issues as well, but finding the right doctor who didn’t dismiss his issues was the key to returning my son’s hearing. Thank you so much for highlighting the incredible work of Dr. Dana Suskind and the passion of this program. Every child deserves to have a full set of language skills, regardless of hearing or income level.

Etch, in Nashville, is a bit of a democracy. It’s democratic about its spirits— the restaurant currently offers nine cocktails, made with eight different base liquors—and it’s democratic about its menu: Every bartender has a featured creation. That’s how the Redheaded Chef came about, says bar manager Mark Kremper. An homage to Etch’s crimsonhaired chef and owner, Deb Paquette, the tequila-based tipple incorporates an ingredient you might not expect: white wine. “We really wanted to impress Deb with this one,” Kremper says, “so we tried to impart flavors that she loves.” Bartender Paul Rogers’ concoction includes a splash of acidic New Zealand sauvignon blanc followed by some grapefruit juice to drive home the citrus notes. HOT TOPIC

Growing up, Ruben Toraño loved Pop-Tarts. Was it a healthy hankering? Not exactly. But for a kid who couldn’t sit still, having a portable snack was a must. So when Ruben was tasked with dreaming up baked goods for Dallas’ Weekend Coffee, he knew the flaky pastries would have a place on the menu. “Nostalgia is something everyone feels or can relate to in some form,” he says. “If I have strong feelings about something I made because it reminds me of home, I can’t be the only one that feels the same. So why not share?” At Weekend, he mixes in seasonal flavors— rhubarb, anyone?—with the more standard berry and chocolate varieties. Go on, embrace your inner child.

THINK ABOUT LIGHTING

PREPARE YOUR GUESTS

USE YOUR SURROUNDINGS

No matter what time of day your event takes place, mood lighting is a must. If you think guests will stick around after dark, have some lanterns at the ready.

In addition to having things like sunscreen and bug spray on hand, make sure guests know what to wear ahead of time, like the proper shoes or a wrap for when the sun goes down.

Incorporate the colors and textures of the location into your tabletop design. If the event is on the beach, opt for succulents and driftwood over garden roses.

I have children that started in my infant room 5 years ago and now they are graduating kindergarten. Seeing that is the greatest joy of this job.

Veteran and Brand Champion Navy veteran Cory Bullock and his wife Summer chose the Kiddie Academy child care franchise to start their own business in 2008 and have never looked back. As his commitment to the Navy drew to an end, Houston resident Cory Bullock began considering career options. He and his wife, Summer, began looking at opportunities to start their own business. During their search, they reviewed various franchise industries, including tanning and food, before agreeing on child care. After several months of research, they zeroed in on Kiddie Academy. The Bullocks were impressed with the Kiddie Academy corporate team, and were also able to take advantage of Kiddie Academy’s program for veterans. Cory and Summer opened Kiddie Academy’s first Houstonarea location, Kiddie Academy of League City, on August 18, 2008. The Bullocks have achieved monumental success – both from a business and personal standpoint. They have consistently maintained high enrollment numbers, created a wellrecognized brand presence in their community and formed many solid relationships with the families they serve. Cory and Summer have had the pleasure of seeing the results of their hard work in the many children they serve. They have seen the quality of the product first hand with the children’s advancements and accomplishments.

In 2012, Cory and Summer were named Kiddie Academy Franchisees of the Year. Then in 2014, Cory was recognized with the Kiddie Academy Annual Award for Brand Champion, having taken a lead role in supporting and building the Kiddie Academy brand through communications and interactions with their own team and prospective franchisees. OF ICE AND MEN Thirty-one percent of women say they’re too cold in the office compared to just 13 percent of men.

Talk about a cold snap. According to a CareerBuilder survey of more than 5,600 employees and human resource managers, tempers tend to flare when there’s a degree of discord over whether or not to blast the AC. To avoid a new kind of Cold War, Michael Erwin, a senior career adviser at CareerBuilder.com, recommends deciding on a temperature as a team. “Don’t be passive-aggressive,” Erwin says. “Some people will just go and turn the thermostat up or down, and that really doesn’t solve the problem.” If workplace relationships are still running hot and cold after a group discussion, there’s no shame in stashing a space heater and a fan at your desk. WORK Takeaway

Roman’s 99% Invisible podcast has more than 70 million downloads. Hear what all the hype is about at 99pi.org.

This radio host followed his curiosity right to a dream job. I was working on a Ph.D. in genetics, and I was faced with having to study this one thing for the next five years, three if I was lucky. Listening to public radio in the lab and at home, I sort of had an epiphany: If I could study a new thing every day—instead of the Mr R-m transposable element cluster in maize—my life would be perfect. I didn’t really think of it as journalism at the time. I just knew that somebody read books and helped Ray Suarez ask questions on Talk of the Nation. That was my dream job. So I dropped out and eventually started volunteering at KALW in San Francisco to learn the skills to become that person. It took about three years without pay, but I eventually landed a position with WBEZ in Chicago.

BAL ANCING ACT It takes about six weeks to produce an episode, but I could do it in 10 days if forced. In radio, if you can’t put something together in the space between episodes, you’re producing the wrong show. THE SMALL STUFF Doing the show has made me a more optimistic person. Once you begin to recognize all the small things that make our lives better, it gives you some hope for the world. TEST OF TIME When you create something, own your work and treat your audience with respect. If you have 100,000 listeners and you cut a minute off your show because it’s not as good as the rest of it, you just saved 100,000 minutes in this world. That’s a huge thing.

Operator

A new kind of personal shopper is right at your fingertips. Here’s how CEO and co-founder Robin Chan describes the mobile concierge service: We realized there are really just two ways to shop—at a store or online. Operator offers the best of both: human interaction coupled with online convenience and breadth of selection. You download the iOS app, type in what you need, and answer a few follow-up questions. We route that data to one of our experts, either someone in our own network or a partner from another company. If you want a pair of Nikes, we’ll send you directly to our partner there.

But if you’re looking for general recommendations, we’ll send you to an independent expert who will provide two to three suggestions. Once you’re satisfied, tap the “I’ll take it” button to purchase the item with your stored credit card. Operator currently ships through traditional e-commerce channels, but eventually we’ll be integrating with UberRUSH for instances when both the product and customer are local. Customers reap the same cost benefits as if they’d scoured the Internet—but without any of the extra time or hassle.

Operator handles tracking and returns, too. Learn more at operator.com.

Before you dive in, a few thoughts on why we’re drawn to the water’s edge. /BY GINA BARRECA

F

ive years ago, standing on a high cliff in Cabo San Lucas at sunset, as ink-dark and white-capped waves swept up against the rocks below, my husband decided to retire. He’d been circling the idea, but that one moment made up his mind. He wanted more time to see more places like this one; he wanted to get back to the essential parts of life. It was being near the water that did it; it prompted him to make a sea change. My husband and I both grew up near the ocean—a bus, bike, or car ride away—but I’m an indoor girl by nature. Most rugged terrain I find unfit for highly sophisticated activities such as eating, drinking, conversing, and walking whilst wearing attractive footwear. Still, even a city snob like me can make an exception. Though we now live in the wooded countryside of New England, we long for chances to make a break for the shoreline. We head for the water to become ourselves. We shed our clothes and our schedules, and we slip out of our inhibitions and worries. We close our eyes to feel the sun and the breeze more keenly. Traveling to these places puts us at the edge of something wonderful, not only in terms of what we see but how we feel. It’s no wonder we offer sandboxes and inflatable swimming pools as palliatives to toddlers; it’s as if we’re reassuring them, as well as ourselves, the seaside isn’t too far away. But it’s not just the ocean. A lyrically shifting landscape—the serenity of a lake, the majesty of a waterfall, the might of a river—helps us feel simultaneously significant and boundlessly free. Others may seek challenges and breathtaking wildness, returning with stories of iridescent fishes and a mermaid glimpsed behind a rock. As for me, I’ll be sitting with a good book under a shady tree, watching my husband as he waves briefly while swimming in the blue-green water. With the ocean nearby, this is adventure enough. Gina Barreca is the author, most recently, of “If You Lean In, Will Men Just Look Down Your Blouse?”: Questions and Thoughts for Loud, Smart Women in Turbulent Times.

ENFIELD GLEN, NEW YORK The local tagline “Ithaca is Gorges!” will hit home after a trip to Enfield Glen, located in robert h. treman state park ($7 per carload). You’ll pass 12 waterfalls on the park’s well-paved hiking trails, including the 115-foot Lucifer Falls, which tumbles down a steep rock face. Or go for a dip under a more modest waterfall in a nearby stream-fed pool. HOMESTEAD CRATER, UTAH Few resorts have their own crater, let alone one that doubles as a geothermal pool. At the homestead resort (from $99; pool access $16) outside Salt Lake City, you can swim (or take a paddleboard yoga class) in the pool at the base of the 10,000-year-old limestone formation, where the waters maintain a balmy temperature of 90 to 96 degrees. SITTEE RIVER, BELIZE One of the first things you might notice on the Jungle River Tour with hamanasi resort (rooms from $333; excursions $65) in Hopkins, Belize, is the noise: Brilliantly colored birds ranging from parakeets to keelbilled toucans sing in the canopy of trees above, quite the soundtrack as you canoe down the coastal Sittee River. Also keep an eye out for bobbing saltwater crocs and green and orange iguanas. MOHICAN RIVER, OHIO Prefer a relaxed day on the water? Rent inner tubes from mohican adventures ($15) in central Ohio and float along the Mohican River. The lazy 7-mile route winds through dense forest and sun-filled ravines. Reserve an extra tube for your cooler full of food, or stop at one of the snack bars on the riverbank. When night falls, bed down in one of Mohican Adventures’ cabins (from $100 for up to seven people). MAY RIVER, SOUTH CAROLINA History buffs will love exploring the May River in Bluffton, South Carolina, aboard the Grace, one of the few gas-powered pre–World War I yachts left in the U.S. The boat was recently restored—to the tune of $1 million—by montage palmetto bluff (rooms from $275; sails from $50) and now sports everything from a new engine to a fresh coat of paint. Enjoy a glass of champagne and hors d’oeuvres on a sunset tour, or sample wines on the Sommelier Sip and Sail. MISSISSIPPI RIVER While river cruising got its start in Europe, it’s making inroads in the U.S. on waterways like the Mighty Mississippi. On american may 2016 southwest 51

Back on board the 150-passenger Queen of the Mississippi, a paddle-wheel steamboat, travelers can dine in one of two restaurants and watch the working river from the sun deck.

OKLAHOMA RIVER, OKLAHOMA This month, riversport rapids (day passes $49), one of only three man-made white-water rapids parks in the U.S., opens on the outskirts of Oklahoma City. Within the $46 million arena adjacent to the Oklahoma River, adrenaline junkies can navigate class II–IV rapids—all controlled by recirculating water channels—in kayaks, canoes, and rafts. The attraction is part of the larger Boathouse District, which also offers mountain biking paths and zip lines.

PACIFIC COAST, COSTA RICA las catalinas, a new seaside town in Guanacaste, is quickly becoming one of the country’s top destinations for ocean sports. Attend the annual SUP competition in the fall, or sync up with insider guides who can take you to a handful of remote surf breaks such as Witch’s Rock and the remote Ollie’s Point, which is only accessible by boat. FLORIDA COAST Thanks to a series of shipwrecks, including the SS Copenhagen—which sunk in 1900 and was designated an Underwater Archaeological Preserve in 1994—the waters off Pompano Beach in Greater Fort Lauderdale are now officially being called shipwreck park. This summer, the city will sink the 324-foot Newtown Creek 1.5 miles offshore as a new cornerstone of the artificial reef. Sign up to explore with South Florida Diving Headquarters (from $40 plus gear). CALIFORNIA COAST Examine a series of tidal pools on a naturalist-led trip through Abalone Cove Ecological Reserve when you stay at terranea resort (rooms from $450; excursions $60), located south of Los Angeles. Keep an eye out for starfish and sea anemones; you

might also spot dolphins and sea lions in the ocean waves.

OREGON COAST clatsop county’s 18 miles of beaches are renowned for their abundance of razor clams. Want to dig for your dinner? Head to the shoreline during low tide with a shovel in hand. After spotting their “show”—mature clams create dime-size dimples in the sand when they burrow—dig quickly: They're fast and, of course, quite sharp. Visit dfw.state.or.us for permits. MARINE WILDLIFE FROM COAST TO COAST At the casamagna marriott (from $159) in Puerto Vallarta, guests can assist marine biologists as they release newly hatched sea turtles into the Pacific. On a jaunt with captain john whale watching & fishing tours ($48) to the Stellwagen Bank in the Atlantic, sightings are guaranteed. The naturalist-led trip to see humpback, minke, and endangered right whales starts in Plymouth, Massachusetts. The season to snorkel among whale sharks in the Caribbean starts May 15. John Gregoire never needed a microphone. › His voice would project from his 5-foot-11 frame, streaking out of the dugout when he coached his sons’ Little League teams and filling hotel ballrooms packed with his clients. John spent his days as a management consultant and executive coach, flying from his Maine home to New York or Philadelphia or taking the train down to Boston. His voice was his instrument; timely interjection is everything in coaching. The days he didn’t spend on the road were spent on the phone, talking through problems with clients. Then on the drive home, he’d crank the radio, singing along and drumming the rhythm with his hands.

top right John and Linda Gregoire in 2014.

in 2006 john opened his own coaching business and spent the next year constantly on the road. Two weeks of travel every month brought on a bout of pneumonia, which, even after he recovered, left him with overwhelming fatigue. But his wife, Linda, knew something else was off. By each afternoon, his speech was slow and slurred, she says. For John, it was hard to enunciate; his lips felt awkward. They chalked it up to his work schedule. One week that June, he headed back out on the road, to a meeting in Chicago. John and his clients sat down for a steak dinner and poured some wine. He began talking, and the two clients exchanged glances. They thought he was drunk; he hadn’t taken a sip. Small things started to pile up: trouble opening jars, cutting himself while cooking dinner, difficulty showing his son a guitar chord. In New York, he fell over on the subway. One October morning, Linda looked out the window and saw him in the driveway. He looked nice: khakis, a blazer. He placed the garbage in the back of his car and pulled to the street to toss it in the can. As he went to throw it, his momentum bowled him over, and he rolled down the driveway. Linda sprinted out the front door, crying. They made an appointment to see a neurologist. On December 17, John and Linda took the Amtrak Downeaster train to meet with a specialist at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Boston. CONTINUED ON PAGE 62

With each stop, the train grew fuller with Christmas shoppers; at one point the whole car started singing carols. When they arrived, they walked 20 minutes through the early winter slush, Linda holding John up the whole way. The doctor was blunt: John had ALS. He gave John 18 months to live and offered the couple a coupon for a discounted wheelchair. Linda limped John back across the now frozen slush and onto the train. She curled up, put her head on her husband’s shoulder, and cried. He tilted his head back and closed his eyes. They stayed like that for two and a half hours, all the way back to Maine. John went back to work, and a new normal set in. Clients were understanding; email would suffice instead of phone conversations. Every afternoon at 3:30, John drove to Starbucks for a Venti-size coffee. Placebo or not, the coffee helped his speech. But it couldn’t last forever. Within a year, the man who could

command a ballroom with his voice was resigned to typing on an iPad and having it speak for him. “Bossy Ryan” took over from there. The mechanical, demanding voice on John’s iPad earned that nickname from Linda. Instead of John sneaking up behind her and whispering in her ear, she had tonedeaf Bossy Ryan. “You hear somebody on the phone, sometimes you can identify who that person is before they even say their name,” Linda says. “You take that away from them and just give them Bossy Ryan? It’s not right.” Although John had fully switched over to the iPad, he still had a BlackBerry, and on it a voicemail greeting: Hi, this is John Gregoire. I can’t take your call, leave a message. Every day, Linda would call John’s number just to hear that anodyne message, over and over. Hi, this is John … She knew every crack, every pause. One day she made the call, and it was gone. She checked the number and tried again. Still nothing.

She jumped in her car and bolted to the AT&T store. It turned out that the employees who’d helped Linda arrange to have John’s BlackBerry shut off had neglected to tell her she’d lose the message. Linda cried in the store. “You gotta get it back!” she pleaded. “It’s in the cloud somewhere, right?” The employees shook their heads. John and Linda still have home movies, but they’re too hard to watch. To look back on those things now, Linda says, what’s the point? They’re a painful reminder of what they’ll never get back: the whispers, the kisses, even the fights. There was something about hearing just his voice on the greeting, though, that had been soothing.

she says, “the human voice is the organ of the soul.” A photo of Stephen Hawking slides across the screen, and then one of a little girl, then three more people. All use communication devices to help them speak. And all of them, Rupal says, may be using the same voice. This problem, this lack of individualization, this lack of soul, was driven home for her 11 years earlier. It was August 2002, and she had just gotten off the stage at the Conference of the International Society of Alternative and Augmentative Communication, in Odense, Denmark. She walked into the crowded technology exhibit hall, where people from all over the world were pitching voice programs, software, and research. There, she stumbled across a conversation between a young girl, no older than 10, and a middle-aged man. When they spoke, they used the same voice. That voice, known colloquially as “Perfect Paul” (or even more colloquially, the “Stephen Hawking voice”), is the most popular artificial voice on the planet. You may also know it as the longtime voice of the National Weather Service. Developed in the early ’80s by Digital Equipment Corporation for its DECtalk speech synthesizer, it got its name because it was the clearest artificial voice on the market. As Rupal looked around the exhibit hall, she saw hundreds of people using only a handful of voices. “We wouldn’t dream of fitting a little girl with the prosthetic of a grown man,” she tells the TED audience. “So why then the same prosthetic voice?” She reached out to Tim Bunnell, a speech synthesis expert who was already building personalized voices for people who lost the ability to speak later in life, people who’d banked their speech knowing it was escaping them. He did this by clipping together a

person’s speech samples and reconstructing his or her voice. Rupal had to find a way to reverse engineer the system with whatever vocal ability an individual had. Maybe that was the ability to pronounce one or two vowels, or maybe it was just a noise from deep within their larynx. Whatever it was, Rupal was going to capture it. “What happens next is best described by my daughter’s analogy —she’s 6,” Rupal says on the TED stage. “She calls it mixing colors to paint voices.” To create a voice, Rupal takes those unique source sounds from a speech-impaired person and combines them with full speech from someone roughly the same age and gender (similar regional accents are helpful, too). She introduces the story of Samantha, a 17-year-old with perisylvian syndrome, a rare disorder that limits her ability to speak. But Samantha can still produce vowellike sounds. Rupal plays an audio

recording of Samantha pronouncing an “Ahhh” sound. She pauses. “Now, Samantha can say this,” Rupal says. A new recording begins. It’s feminine and youthful and optimistic. “This voice is only for me,” Samantha says. “I can’t wait to use my new voice with my friends.”

Two weeks before

the TED talk, on Thanksgiving Day 2013, Rupal had set up a website, VocalID.org, which contained a small section where visitors could sign up to donate their voices. Before walking on stage, Rupal had 10 surrogate voices she could use to make personalized voices. Two hundred, she thought, would be a good start. That alone would be 10 times larger than her biggest study. Within a week, 1,500 people had signed up. Two months later: 8,000 people. Money started trickling in from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. Rupal hired a programmer to

build out the website, making it possible for those 8,000 waiting donors to give their voices. But what should they say? Rupal compiled 3,500 sentences based on their sounds and sound combinations. Some were selected for rhythm, melody, and emotion; 250 constituted our most familiar phrases. Hi. Good to see you. I love you. Donors flooded the site. Voice drives surfaced at middle schools and as bar mitzvah projects. Chinese residents used the voice donation as English language practice. More than 10,000 people have now started or completed donating, no small feat considering the 3,500 sentences take roughly six or seven hours to orate. To take all those donations and actually turn them into usable voices, Rupal needed to build a more complex algorithm that would search through the bank and pull out appropriate matches. In stepped Geoff Meltzner.

Geoff and Rupal had met eight years earlier, when he was working on silent speech recognition. (The work was fascinating: Imagine sensors on your neck and face that can recognize words even if you just mouth them silently.) Geoff built the algorithm Rupal needed and installed a computer in his basement to work through all the permutations. Before he came on, Rupal had to spend 40 to 50 hours manually massaging every voice created by her team at Northeastern University, smoothing out transitions or tweaking certain letter combinations. The computer’s fine-tuning helped drop that number to about 15 hours. To supplement the federal grants, Rupal launched an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign with a goal of raising $70,000. Among the incentives, she included a “Trailblazer” option: If you donated $10,000 you could get one of the first voices off the line. (Or, in this case, out of Geoff ’s basement.) Rupal didn’t expect anyone to donate that much;

She has a broad, generous smile, one that makes her eyes look smaller because her cheeks raise so much. On the back of her wheelchair hangs her shimmering purple cooler bag. Her favorite singer is Taylor Swift, but for the moment—I guess—she’ll settle for Sia. “If she used this all the time, it would take forever, so I just say ‘Kick when I get to the one you want,’” Ann says. “This” is Tess’ talker. She can explain. “I push a button on the left side of my head to control my talker,” Tess says. “Please be patient because it takes me a long time to talk back to you.” The voice is somehow both flat and tinny, like a See ’n Say toy. It doesn’t sound like a precocious tomboy, and it doesn’t do justice to the fact that when Tess smiles you can practically see it even if you’re standing behind her. It’s straight from the computer, standard-issue. It’s used by thousands around the world. It is, in every way, inhuman. Ann and her husband, Jason, knew Tess would never be able to speak. Born with cerebral palsy, Tess is limited physically and vocally. Cognitively? One hundred percent there. (During visits with her math tutor, Tess sits in her chair and solves equations in her head, using the same kick method to dispense her answers.) When she was 3, Tess and Ann sat in Tess’ bedroom, surrounded by her stuffed animals. Tess was the teacher; Ann and the animals, the students. “Let’s rhyme,” Tess said. “What rhymes with man?” “Tan! Fan!” Ann shouted. Around and around they went, until lunchtime. Ann got up to

make lunch but heard Tess clicking around. Three minutes later, Tess made her announcement: “Remember, girls and boys, no school tomorrow.” “And I’m like, ‘Remember?’” Ann says. “Where’d you learn that?” By first grade she’d written her first book. Ice Man was a story about playing in the snow with her sisters, and she followed it up with a slew of poetry collections.

As a middle schooler she’s ventured into playing the drums, using her head switch to keep the rhythm. At school, there are other kids like her, which means that there are also other kids with her same voice. For teachers with their backs to the room, this creates a near impossible task: One student responds, but six students have the same voice. Who answered the question? For Tess there’s also the reality

Ann was nervous. What if Tess doesn’t like the voice? Is the whole thing too much pressure?

The first is a bit breathy; the second is louder. It’s more confident, clearer. Tess picks the second voice, and Rupal begins the process of uploading it onto Tess’ machine. Half an hour, a machine switch, and a call to Geoff later, the voice is finally ready to go. “All right, Tess, you have it, you can say anything you want now,” Ann says. “What are your first words going to be?” “This is one small step … ,”

Jason says in his best Neil Armstrong impression. “Don’t mess with Texas,” Geoff suggests over the phone. Ann looks at Tess. It’s late afternoon, and she’s tired. “Once you’re organized, of course,” Ann says. “We’ll wait until you’re organized.” Earlier in the day, Ann was nervous. What if she doesn’t like the voice? Is the whole thing too much pressure? Tess, less so. “She said

email: “Hello! We are just wiping tears away from our eyes after listening to your TED talk.” Both were stunned when Rupal responded. (“I couldn’t believe I was talking to the Rupal Patel,” Ann says.) They soon became VocalID Trailblazers. A year later, Rupal walks into their Texas home. She’s just flown in from the Bay Area, where she spent yet another day pitching investors on VocalID. She leans out of her chair and smiles at Tess: “Are you ready for this?” With Ann beaming by her side, Tess nods. Rupal hits play. “My name is Tess.” She plays the second one. It’s quicker than the first, and more youthful. It’s a monumental shift from Tess’ current voice, which, when Rupal plays it soon after, sounds cartoony in comparison. “They sound like girls,” Ann says. “They sound like Tess.” Tess puts her head down and smiles. Rupal plays them again.

‘Whatever’ yesterday and laughed. I think she’s just annoying me on purpose,” Ann said in a text. Geoff is still on the phone; Rupal, still at Tess’ side. Everyone waits, and Tess lowers her head. Minutes pass. To break the suspense, Rupal gives Tess a T-shirt that features all the Indiegogo donors’ names incorporated into the VocalID logo. It doesn’t work. “She’s 12,” Jason says with a laugh. “You can’t make her talk, and you can’t make her shut up either.” Eventually Tess goes into the other room and watches television. Later, after Rupal leaves, she speaks with her sister, alone. “People will say to me, ‘Why don’t you just make 1,000 voices? You have 10,000 voices in your bank, just flood the market,’” Rupal says that night. “Tess is not one of 1,000 people. The fact that she can’t control so many other things, but she made breath to make sound, and we took that sound to make her voice ... Is it important for her to just pick a voice from a thousand? It may not be important for her right now. But for the 16-year-olds and 17-year-olds we’re making voices for, they say, ‘I don’t want to pick from a library. I’m not a library. I’m a human.’”

Every day, Rupal

has the same routine. Wake up at 6:30 a.m., get her kids ready for school, head down the road into the office. Walk past the Italian restaurant on the first floor and up to the third floor, where VocalID’s Belmont, Massachusetts, headquarters shares a kitchen, conference room, and restroom with a marketing team, a sports psychologist, and a forestry consultant. She works all day, tucks her kids in—her husband is a professor at MIT; they’re both on the move all the time—and then begins her second shift. At 9

p.m. she starts her round of West Coast calls, which last until early morning. She falls asleep at 2. She’s operated on four and a half hours of sleep for the past 18 months. “This is all I’ve been doing, thinking, breathing,” she says. “It’s not super healthy working until 2 every day and then getting back up at 6:30 or 7 a.m.; it’s driven by adrenaline and driven by passion and driven by drivenness. But there’s a cost to it.” That cost is missing Christmas cookie exchanges, or discovering more white hairs, or finding nannies to watch her two children when she needs to go to dinners and her husband is out of town. The cost is flying across the country and meeting with investors who just don’t get what we’re

A shriek slips out of John, and Linda leans over to whisper into his ear: “That sounds like you.” trying to do—and then flying back to Boston and wondering if she’s going to land her next grant. It’s exhausting. Her tiny office is nearly unadorned, save for a Tupperware of candy and an innovation award from South by Southwest. There’s a financial cost, too. Her own net worth is in the company, and her seven employees won’t work below market rate forever. The biggest cost, though, is time. Every day the company doesn’t lock down investors is

another day that a competitor could join the market. So she needs to adapt. The first step: Automate more. After Tess got her voice, Ann called Rupal. The voice, she said, it wasn’t quite Tess. Tess is stronger than that, Ann said, so they sent Rupal new audio samples and started the process again. By the end of 2016 this extra work might not be necessary. Recipients will be able to adjust their voices using an online portal. Want more volume? You got it. More bass? Turn the knob to the right. Part of this is for the customer—automatic, at-will adjustment gives the recipient the exact sound they want—but much of it is a matter of necessity. VocalID has orders for 76 voices in 2016, up from 2015’s trailblazing seven. The goal for this year is to drop that manual manipulation time from 15 hours to under eight. By 2018, with the addition of the online portal, Rupal hopes to shrink that number to below one. Because even if that time drops to three hours—less than one-tenth of what it took in 2014—the business might not be scalable. While VocalID started as an altruistic idea, the science and the technology behind it aren’t cheap—the voices cost $1,250, plus an annual upkeep fee. Those voices, though, aren’t the company’s end goal. Imagine you’re on the subway, but you’re supposed to be on a conference call. What if, instead of being late, you could send a text that was read over the call in your own voice? Or, using that same line of thinking, what if every email you received could be read to you in the sender’s voice? Those applications, Rupal believes, are the future of VocalID. If she can lower the production costs, VocalID can enter those markets, making voices free for the Tesses of the world. For every money-saving portal,

though, comes another pile of questions. For Tess, a 12-yearold entering puberty, that voice may change another two or three times. Does that require a new donor? That probably won’t work; it would sound too different. Would the original donor be willing to redonate? Maybe, but is that an imposition the company is willing to bank on? And then there are the Johns of the world, who come with their own questions. Can you accurately recreate someone’s voice from audio and video recordings? Can you restore the organ of one’s soul?

On December 14,

2015, three days shy of the eighth anniversary of his ALS diagnosis, John and Linda load into their van and start the 120-mile drive from their Maine home to VocalID’s offices. They don’t talk much. John prepares himself for disappointment. In the small conference room, John, Linda, Rupal, and Geoff all cram in with a news crew from Maine and prepare to hear three voices. Linda stands behind John, draping her arm over the back of his chair and leaning over his left shoulder. Geoff hits play. “Can we stop at Starbucks to refuel?” Rupal smiles and then sees John and Linda’s blank faces. She looks to the floor and fiddles with her fingers. Geoff plays the second voice. “Can we stop at Starbucks to refuel?” Linda smiles; John nods politely. Geoff plays the final voice. “Can we stop at Starbucks to refuel?” Halfway through the sentence, Linda’s eyes go wide, and John raises his head. They both turn and smile at Rupal. “That’s the one,” Linda says, nodding her head. “That’s really close.” She rubs John’s shoulders

and looks down at her husband. His lips and eyes are sealed shut, and he’s crying. Linda takes off his glasses and wipes his cheeks. Geoff plays one more sample. “My name is John. I live in Windham, Maine.” A shriek slips out of John, and Linda leans over to whisper into his ear: “That sounds like you.” “I can hear him talking sometimes,” Linda says later. “I can hear him talking, but I can’t hear his voice because I’ve been so accustomed to Ryan—Bossy Ryan—that it’s sort of skewed my memory of what his voice sounds like. So when we heard it, it was like having a friend visit.” Once the voice is inputted onto his machine, John plans out his first sentence with his new, old voice. There was no question what it would be. “I love you, Linda.” Soon, they load back into the van. They exclaim together—I can’t believe ... I can’t believe— John in his chair, Linda peeking back in the rearview mirror. The skyline fades behind them, and they ease up Interstate 95, back to Windham. Drained, John falls quickly to sleep. SPIRIT OF CALIFORNIA

SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION

Stroll along downtown Stockton’s promenades, replete with public art and delightful waterfront dining options.

GRATON RESORT & CASINO

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA NorCal is known worldwide for its vineyards, and rightly so— the wines that come out of the region are stellar. But there’s more to this part of the state to discover, including its historic capital city and thousands of miles of waterways.

SIP

A flight into Sacramento International Airport puts you a short drive from many of California’s best wineries. To the east of SMF, we like the Placer County Wine Trail and El Dorado Wine Association. Heading south? The Vineyards of Lodi are just as spectacular. Plan it out and you could hit several of Gold Country’s top vino destinations in a single weekend.

SAVOR

Two of our top go-to dinner spots? First up is Midgley’s Public House in Stockton, the brainchild of chef Mike Midgley, who appeared on the second season of Top Chef and won an episode of the Food Network’s Cutthroat Kitchen. And just up I-5, Mother is a Sacramento hot spot known for its locally sourced vegetarian and vegan menus.

SEE

You may be surprised to learn that Stockton, situated about 75 miles

inland, is actually a port city—the largest inland seaport in the state, in fact. Head to the spectacular downtown waterfront, where you’ll find a marina and a ballpark that’s home to the appropriately named Stockton Ports. Rent a kayak and paddle around for a one-of-a-kind vantage point. Afterward, visit the Wat Dhammararam Buddhist Temple to marvel at more than 90 jewel-encrusted, larger-than-life statues, including a 50-foot-long reclining Buddha.

Once home to the city’s public market, the pet-friendly Sheraton Grand Sacramento Hotel is in the heart of Cali’s capital. Spacious guest rooms provide plenty of space for everyone to spread out, and the downstairs Public Market Bar has a terrific happy hour to toast the day. For the more adventurous, rent a houseboat and meander through the area’s waterways.

It’s game on at Graton Resort & Casino in the Bay Area’s Rohnert Park, and it’s a high-stakes game at that. A $175 million expansion is underway, which includes the addition of a 200-guest room resort with spa. Accommodations will range from 500-square-foot rooms to suites up to 2,600 square feet—plenty of space to count all your casino winnings. Or you can choose to celebrate in any of the property’s dozen restaurants and bars. Look for the hotel opening this fall.

Gorgeous Lake Tahoe offers plenty in the way of recreation and dining. We’re talking stand-up paddleboarding (top) and the lakeside Riva Grill (bottom).

This alpine paradise is straight off a postcard: brilliant blue skies and wispy clouds reflecting off an even bluer lake, all flanked by the magnificent Sierra Nevada Mountains. Lake Tahoe is greater than the sum of its picturesque parts, though. Want proof?

SIP

After a day spent adventuring in, on, or around the lake, stop by Cold Water Brewery & Grill to unwind and connect with locals. On any given day, eight hand-crafted, brewed-on-site beers are on tap to wash down the pub’s Californiastyle comfort food. Fancy a particular brew? Fill a growler to go.

SAVOR

Riva Grill, named in honor of the spectacular wooden boats of a

bygone era (only about 20 Rivas are built to order each year), has an expansive waterfront deck for soaking up the sun’s rays. Or sit inside near the floor-to-ceiling windows to take in the views. Either way, we recommend the chicken and waffles for breakfast and the lunch menu’s seafood special.

SEE

The best way to experience Lake Tahoe? Rent a stand-up paddle-

board from South Tahoe Standup Paddle. The glassy water makes it easy for beginners to learn and for advanced paddlers to perfect their strokes.

STAY

The Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel is ideally situated amid the action in South Lake Tahoe: Out the front doors, the Heavenly Gondola offers unmatched views of the lake and surrounding area; out back, Desolation Wilderness, a federally protected area, and the Tahoe Rim Trail await; and right next door, Heavenly Village beckons with shops, restaurants, a movie theater, and an ice-skating rink. After a day of play, enjoy a nightly happy hour at the resort and then bed down in a cozy two-room suite.

Hard Rock Cafe Hollywood

L.A. & SANTA BARBARA

Approaching LAX at night, the glow from the big-city lights can be seen far out into the desert, growing brighter and denser upon landing. On the ground, the City of Angels shines just as bright thanks to world-class dining, entertainment, and—if you’re lucky—random celebrity sightings.

SIP/SAVOR

As part of this month’s World Burger Tour, Hard Rock locations across the globe are showcasing Local Legendary Burgers that highlight the distinct flavors of their cities. At the Hard Rock Cafe on Hollywood Boulevard, chefs are topping patties with lettuce, tomato, roasted shallots, and melted brie, and slathering the buns with tarragon aioli. A pile of white-truffle garlic fries come on the side. To cool things off, order a Crisp Sipper (gin, cucumber syrup, raspberry, lemon, and orange); a MelonPalooza (Midori, coconut rum, Hard Rock’s sour mix, pineapple, and strawberry); or a black cherry melonade mocktail (black cherry and cucumber syrups, and ginger beer). The World Burger Tour menu is available through June.

DO/STAY

Fresh from a yearlong renovation project, Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez is proudly debuting its updated look and expanded footprint. On the new gaming floor, 2,300 slot machines await the next lucky spinner; the High Limit Room has tripled in size, boasting 125 slot machines and four blackjack tables; and a 3,200-square-foot poker room is ready to deal. A brand new hotel tower increased accommodations three-fold with the addition of 218 rooms, and a rooftop pool deck on the expanded portion of the casino is the perfect spot to gaze at the mountains. When it comes to dining, there’s no shortage of choices: The Willows and The Buffet have been reimagined, Chumash Café has been remodeled, and a food court offers four casual options.

PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF CHUMASH CASINO RESORT, HARD ROCK CAFE, AND HOPE FAMILY WINES

Nearly 40 years ago, the Hope family began growing grapevines along California’s Central Coast, first selling to fellow winemakers and then entering the winemaking business themselves. Today, Hope Family Wines in Paso Robles (about two hours north of Santa Barbara) produces five labels: Liberty School, Austin Hope, Candor, Troublemaker, and the family’s original label, Treana, which is marking its 20th anniversary this year. The Hope family invites oenophiles— and those new to wine—to celebrate with them in the recently renovated tasting cellar, designed as an extension of the family’s home. The tasting cellar is open Thursday through Monday.

Our favorite time to visit the San Diego County Fair? At dusk when the sky is awash with brilliant hues.

SIP

Perhaps no other city in the country has tapped into the craft brewery craze quite like San Diego: More than 110 independent beer makers call the city and its surrounding areas home. Stop by Saint Archer Brewing Company’s tasting room any day of the week to sample a few drafts. For a warm summer day, we like the hoppy American-style IPA with refreshing notes of lemon, tangerine, and orange.

SAN DIEGO

They say that happiness is calling in San Diego, which SAVOR should come as no surprise given its long stretches Hawaiian flavors have long crossed the Pacific Ocean, and now the of inviting beaches, 90-plus pristine golf courses, islands’ traditional raw fish salad and yearly festivities like the San Diego County Fair. known as poké may very well be

And don’t just take our word for it: Santa Fe’s diverse terrain and aweinspiring views helped it land a spot on USA Today’s list of America’s top mountain biking towns. There’s a bounty of trails—whether you’re an adventure biker looking for a bit of off-roading or a family seeking more relaxing routes. The Santa Fe Opera House is

one of the city’s top destinations for travelers of all ages. This open-air music hall’s dramatic, swooping roofline draws you in while the flawless acoustics wrap around you. In a typical opera house, when the overture begins the lighting dims. Out here, the sun slowly sets right around start time—on a clear night, it’s a spectacular sight to behold. Tip: Arrive early. Much like at sporting events, patrons love to tailgate before the show.

Valerie Jean Fairchild is a trained goldsmith and designer with a remarkable aesthetic. She founded Fairchild & Co. in 1976 and today

her jewelry gallery is a Santa Fe destination focusing on beauty and excitement. Valerie still hand-draws her designs before creating her distinctive pieces, which are evoked by people, nature, ancient cultures, mythology, astrology, travel, and science. Whether something in the gallery catches your eye or you have a custom design in mind, Fairchild & Co.’s team of skilled goldsmiths bring together precious metals and gemstones to create a personal statement. At Santa Fe Goldworks, each of David Griego’s masterpieces is created in the heart of the city and is inspired by the area’s architecture and scenic landscapes. David handpicks the materials he uses in his jewelry—diamonds, turquoise, opals, and Mediterranean coral—to ensure he produces the very best. The shop’s trademark design, the River of Love, depicts a heartbeat and a beautiful mountain that contrasts with Santa Fe’s bright blue skies, but David loves creating timeless pieces customized to patrons’ tastes and needs, too.

around for the banjo-picking and world-champion yodeling of the Flying J Wranglers Western Music Show.

SEE

Midway between Ruidoso and Las Cruces, White Sands National Monument is an awe-inspiring piece of natural landscape. If you’re expecting typical desert scenery, think again. The dunes are made up of pristine white crystals that gleam from every direction. It’s the perfect place for a sunset stroll, and you can camp out nearby.

DO

While you might think of Ski Apache strictly as a winter destination, it’s the place to be regardless of the season. Warmer months bring gondola rides, hiking treks, and mountain biking in the Sierra Blanca range. Don’t miss the

Apache Wind Rider ZipTour, the highest zip-line tour in the U.S., which offers a 360-degree aerial view of the Apache Bowl, an intermediate ski run on the west side of the mountain. If you come back in the winter, get geared up (Ski Apache’s rental shop is your source for skis, boards, boots, and poles) and play in fresh powder. First time on the slopes? The ski school’s instructors will have you parallel turning in no time.

STAY

As soon as you walk into the lobby at Inn of the Mountain Gods, just 4 miles from Ruidoso, you’re greeted with astonishing views of White Mountain. But the perks don’t stop there. A brand-new tap house, Las Vegas–style gaming, sophisticated restaurants, a jam-packed lineup of comedy shows and concerts, championship golf, and fishing excursions—it’s all here. When you’re ready to turn in for the evening, the inn’s luxuriously appointed rooms are just as impressive.

Set aside a full day to explore the National Hispanic Cultural Center downtown. The 20-acre campus contains an education center, three theaters, an art museum, and an ever-growing list of community events—all of which promote the culture of the Spanish-speaking world. On any given weekend, the theaters could be showing a traditional Spanish dance troupe or a local play, catering to visitors of all ages.

these charities offset travel costs and enabling them to do more of what they do best. Team Rubicon has already benefited from our Customers’ generosity: “Rapid Rewards Points donation gives us, as a disaster partner, the ability to dispatch emergency response teams when and where they’re needed most, like in Texas with the recent devastating tornadoes,” says Dennis Clancey, Team Rubicon’s deputy director of response. In addition to Rapid Rewards Points donation, Southwest is proud to have Community Giving Boards, which empower local Employees in every city we serve to grant roundtrip travel to various 501(c)(3) nonprofits that support causes affecting their communities. Heart of the Community

LABORS OF LOVE

Since 2013, Southwest has supported 18 Heart of the Community projects.

Bringing New Life to Public Spaces

Congratulations to our 2016 Heart of the Community grant recipients “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” —Margaret Mead At Southwest Airlines, our Heart is central to everything we do, including connecting people to the places they love. Our Heart of the Community grant program enables people to feel a sense of ownership in their communities by contributing to the shared vision of a public space—a critical element of creating successful, resilient cities. Each year, Southwest accepts grant applications from nonprofit organizations tasked with the oversight, programming, and management of public spaces. This year, our grant process generated 90 applications—a 137 percent increase from 2015! This is a true testament to both the growing demand for and the power of community-led efforts

that create positive, lasting change. The 2016 Heart of the Community recipients are Atlanta: Woodruff Park; Philadelphia: City Hall Courtyard; Los Angeles: Pershing Square; Indianapolis: City Market and Monument Circle; and Minneapolis: 5 to 10 on Hennepin. Upon receiving the grant, recipients get right to work involving residents in the brainstorming and planning process of reimagining their public space. The grant also provides technical assistance and expertise from Project for Public Spaces, our national nonprofit partner, in order to bring new life to these destinations. PPS offers an effective programming platform for activating the space, insight for setting a clear vision, and advice on incorporating physical amenities such as outdoor reading rooms, activity carts, and information kiosks. We are so proud to support the efforts of our 2016 grantees. —Laura Hoagland, Senior Specialist Community Outreach Southwest Airlines In 2014, Southwest launched the Heart of the Community program, which awards grants to create public spaces in the hearts of communities served by the airline. To date, the program has supported 13 innovative and transformative projects. To learn more, visit pps. org/Heart-of-the-Community.

One Question

Shay Mitchell, I’ve never been afraid of change. I graduated from high school when I was 17 and almost immediately afterward moved overseas to do some modeling. I lived in Bangkok for a few months and then went to Hong Kong. It was completely different from my West Vancouver, British Columbia, upbringing, but it helped me become more adaptable. When I came back to Canada,

I decided to give Toronto a try. I took a job as a cocktail waitress to pay the bills, which was perfect because it allowed me to have my days open for auditions. It was during that time that I was cast for the pilot of Prett y Little Liars. Shay made her film debut in Mother’s Day, which premiered April 29.
