NORTH COLLINS STUDENT SPENDS SUMMER IN THE MEDITERRANEAN

Sarah Gawlak, an incoming 9th grader at North Collins High School, spent 19 sun and fun-filled days as a Student Ambassador with the People to People program in the Mediterranean region this summer.

The program, called Modern and Ancient Civilizations, immersed students in the ancient history of the region, while offering them a view of the modern world that tourists seldom see. The delegation started their learning adventure in Greece, and made their way to Italy and Sicily, learning a great deal along the way. Highlights of the trip included stops at the Acropolis, Parthenon and Palace at Knosses in Greece, as well as the Coliseum, the Vatican, Sistine Chapel and Pompeii in Italy. One-of-a-kind experiences included going “behind the scenes” with a Vatican priest, and a chance to talk to a former member of the Swiss Guard, responsible for protecting the Pope. Students even got to see Olympia, where the ancient Olympic Games originated, and trekked up the side of Mt. Etna, a highly-active volcano in Sicily which last erupted in 2011.

With cultural learning enhanced by home visits to families in Crete and Naples, the students tasted home-cooked dishes specific to the region and spent hours talking and dancing with their host families.

“We had a great time, having dinner together with someone that didn’t necessarily speak your language, yet we still felt at home. They showed us their traditional dances, and we got a chance to show them how we dance in America! We laughed together and shared a great moment I’ll always remember!” says Sarah.

Service projects were also part of this adventure, as Student Ambassadors sought to give back to the communities that hosted them. In Greece, students learned about protecting the natural habitats of endangered sea turtles and were award service learning hours for their efforts.

The People to People program was founded in 1956

by President Eisenhower as a way to bridge the cultural divide between nations and seek diplomatic alternatives to war. It was his thought that if students met one another and found common cultural ground while embracing their differences, they could improve understanding and relations between countries. Since inception of the program, over half a million middle and high school students have traveled with People to People. Sarah marks only the fourth student ever from North Collins to travel with this organization, and the first since 2006.

“I realize how lucky I am that I was able to take this trip, and learn so much more than I could have just in books. To watch the Olympics on TV is one thing, but to actually run in the footsteps of those first athletes is nothing short of amazing. I gained so much from this experience!” says Sarah. __________

Erie County Legislator John J. Mills is pleased to announce that the 2nd annual North Collins Public Library Hot Dog Roast Fundraiser, held June 26, raised $1,010 to support the library’s efforts to provide quality programming and materials to the greater North Collins community. The donation was presented to Library Director Mary Muscarella on July 23 during a presentation at the library.

“The North Collins Library saw a year-to-year increase of more than 25 percent thanks to the support of the community. I am looking forward to next year’s event and anticipate we’ll surpass this year’s record,” said Legislator Mills.

“The North Collins Library appreciates the dedication of Legislator Mills to the library system of Erie County.

We plan to use the funds to offer more programs and materials to the residents of North Collins. The annual Hot Dog Roast is quickly becoming a much anticipated event of the summer here!

Geoff Byrne, brother of the groom, was the best man.

Shannon Ayers, sister-in-law of the bride, was the matron of honor and Cate Ayers, niece of the bride, was the flower girl. Following the ceremony, a wedding dinner was held at the fire hall.
