Educational Opportunity Center

Helping Our Community Overcome Barriers to Education Starting or restarting your higher education and finding a career path to pursue can feel like an overwhelming experience, and the Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) at South Seattle College is uniquely suited to help our adult community members (19+) navigate that process by offering free one-on-one help with understanding how to pay for and attend college. Funded by the US Department of Education Federal TRiO Program, the EOC is designed to be a resource for adult learners facing unemployment, veterans and their family members, first-generation college students and low-income students. “I reached out to the EOC after I found myself unemployed,” says Phyllis Moore Shelby, who had recently moved to Seattle after 25 years of working as a flight attendant and 12 years running her own baking business in Hawaii. “Because I had such a varied professional background, they helped me understand the program options available to me, and found a pathway that fit what I was interested in.”

Today, Phyllis is studying to earn her Associate Degree in Marketing & Sales of Food & Wine from our Northwest Wine Academy. In addition to career exploration, EOC specialists provide assistance with financial aid (FAFSA), funding options and college admission applications for qualified adults who seek to enter or continue an academic or vocational degree or certificate program, whether that program is at South Seattle College or another college or university in the area. Staff also refer clients to programs that provide support with English language proficiency, high school completion and adult basic education. The Educational Opportunity Center is located on the main South Seattle College campus (6000 16th Ave SW in West Seattle), and at the Georgetown campus (6737 Corson Ave S). To schedule a one-on-one appointment and create a personalized educational plan with an EOC specialist, please call 206-934-5208 or email
