The Team Southsea Folk Southsea Folk is a quarterly photographic project capturing the essence of the creative community in Southsea. Select individuals – artists, designers and business owners – are photographed in their environments, and the result is an inspiring celebration of this special area.
What a year we have had with Southsea Folk! We’ve seen new businesses open and lots of changes happening around Southsea. One thing that hasn’t changed is the vibrant creative vibes we have going on, and there is scope for this area to grow to become a further recognised hub of creativity. Thanks to George from Pompey Banana Club for giving us a fab front cover! Check him out on pages 4 and 5. In this issue you will find Ginkgo, a new designled studio in Hotwalls, and Hideout Coffee, who opened their doors over the summer and offer an amazing atmosphere, including coffee and donuts!
Southsea now has its very own independent bookshop so check out Pigeon Books on page 9. Baffled Coffee are not only an amazing coffee shop, but now offer evenings of enjoyment with their foodie events! Thank you so much for your ongoing support to Southsea Folk, it means so much and we hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and New Year. Look out for more issues and online focus in 2020.

“Pompey Banana Club is a creative collective based in Portsmouth, born from the unique culture, habitat, and language of our beautiful island city. PBC began exploring how to visually connect with people via the medium of fruit stickers and street art. What began as a small project has been steadily evolving over the past year into more substantial ways to engage with people – as well as promote the hometown which they love. PBC has some larger-scale projects and installations lined up for 2020, so keep your eyes peeled around the island. Prints, T-shirts and other new merch – all locally produced – is available to buy!” - George Bodkin www.pompeybananaclub.com
“By building a community of ‘Adventurous Kids’ we are getting children outside, exploring, learning and simply being kids! It’s been my aim from the start, to encourage children to explore the world around us.
“As a family we have been customers at Southsea Health Shop for many years and when the opportunity to run it came along we jumped at the chance. Coming from an organic food background, I’ve always been passionate about health and well-being, and it’s great to be able to offer the opportunity for people to look after both themselves and the planet in our store.
The Adventurous Kids was born when I wrote a children’s book based on our family. My husband and I, along with our two children, travel the world six months of the year, every year. The book is beautifully illustrated by the wonderful, and local, Gemma Butterworth, bringing adventure and inspiration right into the homes of children. The soon-to-be series of books takes you to a new destination with every story. My first release, ‘The Adventurous Kids visit California’ is incredibly educational, as well as showing you the sights and animals along the way.”
We have plans to refit and revamp in the spring, but we also respect its history as an authentic and traditional shop. We look forward to serving our loyal base as well as attracting a new and diverse band of customers. Albert Road has always had a fiercely independent spirit and it is a privilege to be part of a community that values and embraces local traders.”

“The Station is a new concept store located in the heart of Southsea at Freya Rose Head Office, offering a unique range of British brands that share ethical and craftsmanship values. Products range from designer apparel and accessories to candles and bathing products for the modern, stylish woman.
“Pigeon Books was started after I moved back to Southsea after living in Australia for a number of years. Being a writer myself, I missed the indie bookshops that had been part of my life for so long and so, with my husband Phil (who had spent the majority of his working life in retail) decided we could probably start our own. After starting small and spending a few months selling books at various local markets, we moved into the Pallet Project and are working our way up to establishing a bookshop that is really centered in the community.
In store is an express make-up and hairstyling station working with some of the UK’s top MUA and hair stylists, who also provide bridal services. A ‘one-stop shop for all occasions’.
Specialising in new fiction, select nonfiction, queer lit, and diverse children’s books, Pigeon Books is able to offer something for everyone with a carefully curated range and more events to come in 2020.”
Our ultimate goal is providing a beautiful experience in the shop, where you arrive as clients and leave as friends. We want to present products that are unique, special and can only be found in the boutique. By not selling online and giving the ultimate in-store ambiance, we believe The Station offers a wonderful way to shop, so pop by and visit us!”

“We can’t quite believe it’s been a year since we opened the doors to our family-run restaurant and bar. It’s been an absolute rollercoaster! Not always been easy ... but a lot of fun. We’re thankful to be surrounded by so many supportive people: all our amazing customers and our wonderful team.
“The Grateful Hearts Club started as I wanted to share what I had learnt about gratitude. After experiencing a challenging time trying to start a family and working my way through the grief that comes with loss, I had to focus on the things I had, rather than what was missing. In time, this helped me to feel more optimistic, and then as my optimism grew I began to feel and see even more positives.
We may not have got everything right first time ... but we are incredibly proud of what we have achieved in such a short period. Opening a restaurant in Victoria Road South that specialises in hot dogs and craft beer was a real risky move ... but we are still here. We opened our burger joint just down the road last summer on Osborne Road.
This inspired me to design a card that provides a creative way to capture and share gratitude. You can purchase a fully recyclable letterbox sized set that contains fifty gratitude cards, each with its own envelope. Use them to share some muchneeded love, inspire joy and encourage connection.
We like to take things one day at a time, but let’s hope we have many more years to come.”

“During a 20-year career in the branded restaurant sector I had always yearned to do things my own way. I was ‘Baffled’ as to why I couldn’t find a great independent, continental-style cafébar serving great coffee and exciting food. So, Baffled Coffee was born! I converted a vacant shop unit on Fawcett Road with a shoestring budget and Baffled has been continually evolving ever since. However, our motto has never changed – Simple Things, Done Well. We set no rules for ourselves, or our customers! I LIVE food and drink, and am constantly looking for new dishes or beverages to showcase, taking inspiration from the wide variety of people that I’ve worked with, countries that I visit or simply from the ever-changing, multicultural landscape that is Portsmouth.” - Fergus McMurray Instagram @baffledcoffee 77 Fawcett Road
“Lady brewers are few and far between in Southsea town, so I’m repping for a new kind of beer-head with my home project: Bad Manners Brewery. I sacked off corporate life to act on my passion for all things hopped and malty a year ago and I’m currently loving life as assistant brewer at Staggeringly Good.
“We founded Ginkgo based on our shared love of design, illustration, art and nature. We’re based at the Hotwalls Studios in Portsmouth’s exciting creative quarter. Our background is in printed textiles and graphic design, working in a mixture of traditional and digital media. We use watercolour and gouache to capture beautiful, fleeting moments of the natural world –translating ideas onto fabric by exploring hand-printing, painting and stitch.
My Bad Manners hobby is the product of years of avid tasting and collecting, culminating in considered, tasty brews with personality and character. I’m a grafter by nature, happiest shovel in hand clambering around fermentation tanks or harvesting home-grown herbs and botanicals for the next batch.
Ginkgo is an opportunity for us to explore new paths and to take our work in a new direction in a more creative, artistic way. Our philosophy is that the creative journey is as important as the destination.”
Keep an eye out for collaborative bits with local artists and experimental brews in the pipeline – my yearn to learn keeps me focused and inspired and I’m excited by

“Over the last 20 years I’ve worked my way along the south coast! I’ve lived in Eastbourne, Brighton, Shoreham-by-Sea, Chichester and now Southsea. I find there’s something so meditative about being by the water. I love pottering around Eastney Harbour in the winter as much as I love swimming in the sea in summer. Opening The Boat Shed in Portchester for weddings feels like a natural step to sit alongside my wedding magazine. It’s unique, stylish and quirky. I love the juxtaposition of the simple rustic setting with the luxurious floral displays, dresses and all the eye-popping extravagance that goes with weddings.” - Helen Ruff Instagram @weddings_the_boat_shed_salt Porchester Marina

“I have worked from my studio at The Hotwalls now for three years and it’s perfect! Right by the sea, in a historic building, with a great cafe next door, it couldn’t get any better. We have a wonderful community of artists at The Hotwalls, whose work inspires me every day. You can find me in Studio 3, creating illustrations and embroidery artwork. “I’ve always been an anorak when it comes to crafting and I’m so incredibly lucky to have been able to turn my passion into my whole world. If I’m not in the shop chatting about fibre and yarn I’m dancing around my kitchen dyeing it!
“Vintage Boathouse was created after sourcing original, vintage pieces for our own home. We offer an eclectic mix of antique furniture and decorative homewares. Rustic French farmhouse pieces sit against classic English and industrial items and that’s how we’ve always liked it.
I’ve been a haberdasher for years now, but moving to Southsea has allowed me to immerse myself in this incredible and varied community of creatives that inspire me every day. Being able to talk with both experienced and new makers about their projects, and giving and receiving advice is definitely my favourite part of my job.
We bought a property in France two years ago, so whilst renovating that we hunt for authentic, old items at the wonderful brocantes and flea markets. We have been lucky enough to source for some amazing homes, bars, restaurants and projects over the years.
I can’t believe I’ve been here for a whole joyful year already! It’s been a dream I hope never ends.”
We love Southsea and the creative vibe it has with its many independent businesses dotted around. If you’re looking for a unique piece, you can find all our latest stock online and everything can be viewed at our shop in Southsea or barn

“Hideout started its life as a secret speakeasy style coffee hangout, in the depths of the ilovedust studio basement, Southsea. But, after a year of hiding in the shadows, we decided to Hide … less. The result? A two-floor coffee and donut store at 8 Charter House, boasting first-class coffee and dirty donuts a-plenty.” - Hideout Crüe Instagram @hideoutcoffeecompany 8 Charter House Lord Montgomery Way
