As we launch issue 10 it is with a somewhat heavy heart for our independent community. Living in such a vibrant place, with so many interesting businesses, it has been sad to see many of them forced to close for a while. But out of despair comes hope, and it is more important than ever for us to continue supporting our local businesses where we can, and help them adapt to new ways of working.

Southsea Folk is a quarterly photographic project capturing the essence of the creative community in Southsea. Select individuals – artists, designers and business owners – are photographed in their environments, and the result is an inspiring celebration of this special area.

“LANO Yoga offers a range of class styles to suit all ages, abilities and levels of experience. Alongside our regular schedule of yoga classes, we have recently grown our offerings to include courses in both pregnancy and postnatal yoga. These tailored classes at LANO offer a safe and comfortable environment for mums to connect with body, breath and baby. Our special focus on mental wellbeing has expanded into our new meditation and pranayama classes. These sessions allow time and space to explore meditation techniques and mindfulness, as well as specific methods for working with breath. In light of this uncertain time for us all, and in order to protect our community until we can get back to our physical space, for the time being we are offering a daily schedule of classes online, completely free and accessible to all through Zoom.” - Neil and the team at LANO www.lanoyoga.com 10 Elm Grove

“Photography has always been a part of my life: I’ve been practising it for over 10 years. After some time away from a camera, I recently returned to photography, using only traditional film methods, the ones that have long been fading out and replaced by digital. Through my love of nostalgia and preservation, I have been documenting Portsmouth for the last two years, at first taking photographs of buildings and architecture in the city and, most recently, looking at the everyday lives of the people. Southsea is full of amazing memories old and new. This year I’ll be kickstarting a book based on my travels in China and Hong Kong, as well as displaying the photos in a gallery show at Play Dead later in the year.” - Karl Bailey Instagram: @karlbailey

“Tim and I are the team behind Luvshifting. We offer unique printed silks, striking installations, wedding flowers and conceptual artistry – colour, texture and curiosity allow us to create bold and expressive designs. We are incredibly dedicated to our work, and using unique elements and timeless pairings is our passion. We’re inspired by everything we see – including our clients. We will soon be bringing all our creative business together under one roof at a venue in Southsea. Clients will be able to see our silk and fashion designs or buy and discuss flower and plant creations. Tim will be moving his barber skills here too. It will be amazing to see it all come together.” - Nia Bradley Hobbs www.luvshifting.com 241 Albert Road

“I have been turning my drawings into embroideries for nearly 20 years! I embroider my designs across hand-dyed woollen blankets, cushions, leather bags and purses, and iron-on patches to name a few. I sell these online at craft markets. I am also happy to work freelance – including the embroidered jacket for the new Vodafone 5G advert! After 14 years in London, it is an unbelievable luxury to see the sea every day. I walk my dog Nora along the seafront most days, which has inspired one of my new designs – embroidered channel markers! Southsea has a really wonderful creative community that has been so welcoming since my move here, and there are so many great startups to check out.” - Gemma Cutts www.papercutts.com

“After experiencing some personal challenges that made me re-evaluate life, I realised I had to turn my love for craft beer into a profession. Two Thirds combines some of my biggest passions: beer, people, and art. It’s also a great way to put my many years of ‘research’ to good use! I offer a Craft Beer Pop Up which I can adapt to suit anything from a small gathering to a wedding. I do private tasting events which I’m happy to host at home or at a venue, and a Beer & Art Trail which celebrates the City’s evolving street art scene. I hope the trail will be a great way for craft beer lovers and visitors to learn about the artists and independent businesses that make Southsea what it is.” - Joe Grant Instagram @twothirdsbeer

“It’s almost been six months since we opened the doors to restaurant forty-6. We are overwhelmed with all the support from friends, family, and customers. It’s been a challenge, but what a journey! Mike and I wanted to bring something to Southsea that we loved and are passionate about. To be sharing this with Southsea locals is an amazing feeling. Our latest promotion is breakfast at Forty-6 and our newly launched brunch club! Breakfast has proven to be popular already, so we thought: why not launch our brunch club? Enjoy a meal from our brunch menu whilst sipping on six glasses of Prosecco or bellinis each! For the daring, why not upgrade to Prosecco margaritas for £10? Join our brunch club between Friday and Sunday from 11am to 3pm.“ - Dee Duncan and Mike McAllister www.forty-6.co.uk 46 Osborne Road

“Telemarketing can sometimes get a bit of a bad rap … but, if it’s done right, I believe passionately that it’s still one of the best ways to grow your business. I started 4Marketing back in 2011 because I wanted to create a business that cared about the work it did, cared about its customers and cared about its staff. Our team is made up of 28 amazing people who all give 4Marketing a real family feel. We’re lucky to have amazing offices in the centre of Portsmouth, with Southsea – and all it has to offer – right on our doorstep! There are so many thriving independent businesses, and so many interesting people all around us – we’re proud to be part of it.” - Luke James www.4marketing.co.uk Oriel House, Alec Rose Lane

“There’s something really lovely about getting your hands stuck into soil – I find pottering about with houseplants almost meditative. But best of all is the feeling when you get it just right, and they flourish. I’m certainly no botanist – like most people, I’ve had my fair share of compost heap casualties! But I set up Southsea Jungle as a way to share my personal houseplant experiences with friends, family, and anyone else who might find it useful. I’ve learned so much from some wonderful plant communities and people, and I’m paying it forward.” - Lianne de Mello Instagram @SouthseaJungle

“I first came to Portsmouth as a student, and had a great feeling about the city almost as soon as I stepped off the train as a wide-eyed teenage nerd with a questionable haircut. I’ve been performing and releasing music as Fugitive Orchestra for a few years now and the project grew out of a love of performing and a bit of a quest to get my songs heard. In the time that I’ve been based here I’ve been really fortunate to have found so many supportive people who share my love of music and who want to showcase the talent that’s on offer in the city and further afield, not to mention the many talented musicians and creatives who make the city the special place it is.” - James Tattington www.fugitiveorchestra.com

“Aged 18 and not knowing anyone here, Southsea was intended to be a stop off for me on my way to London, but through the skater community and a series of serendipitous meetings with the neverending line of creatives here, my love of music led me to become ingrained within the cultural community of this little place with a big seafront. Then, after leaving for a year DJing in India, I returned and ended up running a pub with music at its heart: specifically, jazz. Moving on from the pub, I have been involved in various events as Coco Phono, which has led to an exciting collaboration with Coastguard Studio & La Havana Jazz Club to produce Portsmouth Jazz Festival. This will hopefully become a staple of the city’s diverse cultural landscape.” - Sam Foot www.portsmouthjazzfestival.com

“Portsmouth Museum has a fantastic collection of fine and decorative art, which includes paintings, drawings, prints, ceramics, glass, furniture, sculpture and textiles. The collection ranges in date from the 16th century to the present day and is always full of surprises. In my job at the museum I have responsibility for looking after objects and works of art, making them accessible to the public, and re-displaying them in new and engaging ways to re-tell fantastic stories. The role is varied and exciting with no two days the same; I work with artists, conservators, local people, designers and volunteers. I select works for display, write gallery text, provide tours at the museum store and give artist Q&A evenings at the museum. - Susan Ward / Curator of Art www.portsmouthmuseums.co.uk

“We arrived in Southsea from London fresh out of publishing, with a babe in arms, and settled on a space which has been there for 15 years now! White Dog Gallery is brimming with designled gifts, greetings cards and a full range of framing options, from ready-made to bespoke. Where possible we try to work with individual artisans or local people, and most of our gifts reflect this. Southsea is our framing workshop and most of the team are based there. Offering a full range of art materials, we have many local artists as our valued customers popping in for last-minute supplies or advice. We have a real village sense of community in Southsea, with many customers returning again and again for framing, gifts and just to say hello, which we are so grateful for.” - Rick and Helen Steenhuis www.whitedoggallery.co.uk

“I am a big fan of Indian and Pakistani street food and that’s exactly what I’ve missed most since moving to Portsmouth. Cooking has been my passion since I was 11 and, two years ago, I successfully turned this passion into Breeno’s Kitchen. At Breeno’s we create a fusion of authentic and flavoursome Indian and Pakistani street food. Our vision is “Food with No Borders” and we proudly celebrate this union through the similarities and uniqueness of both cuisines. My creations demonstrate that there is more to Indian food than just samosas and tikka masala, and more to Pakistani food than just nihari and lamb chops. You can now enjoy our food without stepping outside your home via Deliveroo.” - Ambreen Jahangir Instagram @breenoskitchen

“We have grown our own little family of restaurants along the seafront in Portsmouth. Family is everything to us; our staff treat each other like family too – everyone looks after each other. Working with family certainly has its challenges, but we love to pull together all of our strengths. My husband Bill and I dipped our toe in the water with The Tenth Hole and my brotherin-law Steve joined us, along with my parents, to create The Briny. Each venue offers something very unique – if you walk from one end of the seafront to the other, we can keep you fully refreshed and fuelled along the way!” - Lucy Branson www.thecanteen.co.uk
